Last year, we learned that the home video distribution company Vinegar Syndrome is getting into making original productions, teaming up with the production company Not the Funeral Home, which brings the world the Shudder streaming series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs, on the first of their Vinegar Syndrome Originals. That film is called Eight Eyes – and given the working relationship Not the Funeral Home has with Shudder, it’s no surprise to hear (via Screen Daily) that Shudder has picked up the North American streaming rights. A release date has not yet been announced, as the deal just happened.
Directed by The Last Drive-In director Austin Jennings, who also wrote the screenplay with Matthew Frink, Eight Eyes has the following synopsis: A mysterious local crashes a couple’s vacation through the former Yugoslavia, pulling them deeper into his web of psychic rituals.

Shudder announced a while back that they had renewed The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs for a supersized sixth season that will make sure legendary drive-in critic and movie host Joe Bob will be an even more consistent presence on the streaming service throughout the year. The season 6 action kicked off with a special (A Tribute to Roger Corman) that aired last Friday, and on March 29th the season will really get rolling with its new approach. In the previous seasons, Joe Bob would host double features on a weekly basis. This time, episodes will air every other Friday night, and instead of the usual double features, Joe Bob will be presenting “single titles and surprises”. Single titles every other Friday is how Shudder intends to spread the episodes out over a longer period of the year. In anticipation of this new season of blood, breasts, and beasts, JoBlo...

The Shudder streaming service is owned and operated by AMC Networks, which is why we’ll occasionally get a special episode of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs, hosted by legendary movie host / drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs, where Joe Bob presents an episode or two of one of AMC’s The Walking Dead shows. There was a special where Joe Bob showed the first two episodes of The Walking Dead, another where he showed the premiere episode of the spin-off series The Walking Dead: Dead City, and one where he showed the premiere episode of the spin-off series The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Another spin-off series, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, is scheduled to begin airing on AMC on February 25th… and yes, of course, they’re going to have Joe Bob show the premiere episode of this one as well. Closing out the first night of this year’s Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival, The Puppetman tossed me a nugget of nostalgia early in the film when the leads make a booze run and I recognized the upside-down sign of Buffalo’s On the Rox Liquors, where many an eventful weekend of my own started.
But that doesn’t come until after we see a man brutally murder his wife while his young daughter cowers, caged in a dark closet. He seems to be struggling with himself as he beats her with a frying pan and stabs her. And that is his defence in court, it wasn’t him, someone or something else was controlling his body. It doesn’t get him acquitted, but it does get him a nickname,...

Indie horror frightmaker Brandon Christensen is back again with a supernatural shocker that boasts some of the year’s most brutal moments in horror. With Christensen’s signature style of slick, straight-to-the-point storytelling, the titular Puppetman is an inventive and new villain, akin to urban legends favs The Candyman or The Blair Witch…with one helluva twisted sense of humor.
The Puppetman, imprisoned and awaiting his fate on death row, has consistently professed his innocence, attributing his murderous spree to an ominous power that dominated him. As the narrative unfolds, Michal (portrayed by Alyson Gorske), his daughter, witnesses eerily familiar deaths around her. This sparks doubt about the authenticity of her father’s claims. As the deaths escalate, Michal finds herself burdened with the daunting task of unraveling the enigma of The Puppetman‘s curse.

Variety has broken the news that the 1987 cult classic horror comedy Street Trash (buy it Here) is getting a remake from Ryan Kruger, the director of the 2020 body horror film Fried Barry! Just a few weeks ago, the Shudder streaming service released a special edition of their series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs that was called Joe Bob’s Haunted Halloween Hangout and had legendary movie host Joe Bob Briggs sharing the screen with fellow legend Elvira. For the last few years, it has been tradition for Shudder to release a Joe Bob special around Halloween – and it’s also tradition for them to release a Joe Bob special around Christmas. That tradition continues this year, as Shudder has announced that the new special Joe Bob’s Ghoultide Get-Together will premiere Friday, December 16, at 9pm on Shudder TV. Last night, horror fans around the world tuned in for the live stream of A Very Joe Bob Christmas on Shudder, a nine hour event, which featured Joe Bob Briggs' signature intros and commentary, special guests and four of the Phantasm films. These live stream marathons have been some of my favorite horror events of the year, instantly bringing me back to the days of staying up late watching MonsterVision, but I also love it because it's recreating the drive-in experience for an all new generation of horror fans and introducing people to horror films they might not watch otherwise. If you couldn't catch the live stream or had technical difficulties, the entire event is now available on demand.

For the past six years, genre moviemakers and moneymen have congregated for long weekends at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, taking part in the Frontières Co-Production Marketplace. Founded in 2012, the market was conceived as a place for horror/fantasy/action auteurs — both established names and newcomers — to pitch projects to potential backers and take part in various networking events.
A highlight of the Market is the opening-day pitch session, in which selected directors, writers, and producers offer multimedia presentations of their nascent features. At the very first Frontières, this event spawned Anouk Whissell, Francois Simard, and Yoann-Karl Whissell’s exuberant futuristic actioner “Turbo Kid”; subsequent movies that took their first steps to fruition there include Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie’s cult/monster horror film “The Void”; Caroline Labrèche and Steeve Léonard’s science-fiction thriller “Radius,” which premiered at this year’s Fantasia; and Jenn Wexler’s upcoming punk-slasher opus “The Ranger.

George Romero’s passing on Sunday at the age of 77 came just days before the legendary director was set to pitch his latest project, “Road of the Dead,” to financiers at Frontières, the Fantasia International Film Festival’s annual film co-production market. Romero planned to produce the zombie movie, and even had plans for four more films, according to Matt Birman, Romero’s longtime collaborator who is still attached to direct “Road of the Dead.”

Romero wrote all four of the movies, one of which Birman co-wrote. Two are based on novels, two are original stories; only one, a comedy, is a zombie project. Birman is determined to bring them all to the big screen.
“I will stop at nothing to get them made! For him and with him,” Birman said in an email to IndieWire. Just two weeks ago,...
