Original TV series based on Arab and Muslim characters are beginning to go global, a Netflix executive said Saturday at the Red Sea Film Festival.
Ahmed Sharkawi, director of Arab content, Netflix Europe, Middle East and Africa, said that a new, distinctive voice was emerging from the region.
“Recently, a friend called me and her mother-in-law – who is 100% American – was recommending one of our Arab series [“Finding Ola,” starring Hind Sabri] to all her friends,” he said at a panel about writing for television.
“This wave [of Arab and Muslim stories] is beginning; the U.S. audience is becoming open to watching stories that are outside of the U.S. experience.”
The region was rich in a tradition of storytelling that meant there were many original scripts being written, he said.
“There are so many stories in this region that have not been told before, so [our job is] about harvesting that intellectual property.”

Marvel series “Helstrom” has been canceled at Hulu after one season, Variety has learned.
The move to cancel the series was not a surprising one, as “Helstrom” was the last live-action show produced by the now defunct Marvel Television unit under Jeph Loeb. The writing may have also been on the wall due to the fact that marketing materials for “Helstrom” — including its trailer and key art — did not include the word “Marvel” despite being based on Marvel comic book characters.
The show’s cancellation serves as a muted end to Loeb’s live-action efforts at Marvel, which at one time included six shows on Netflix as well as “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” on ABC, “Legion” on FX, “Cloak & Dagger” on Freeform, “The Gifted” on Fox, and “Runaways” on Hulu. All of those have either been canceled or wrapped up their runs in the past two years.

Marvel’s “Howard the Duck” and “Tigra & Dazzler” animated series are no longer moving forward at Hulu, an individual with knowledge of the projects told TheWrap.
The other two, “M.O.D.O.K.” and “Hit Monkey,” are still in development. The individual added that the decision to scrap the two shows came from Marvel. With half of the planned four series now dead, the crossover “The Offenders” is also unlikely to happen.
Last year, Hulu announced an expansive multi-series commitment with Marvel TV that would consist of the aforementioned four series, and the crossover. This now leaves Hulu with only three Marvel TV series, as Kevin Feige continues to wind down Marvel TV’s roster in the months after it was moved under Marvel Studios. In addition to the two animated series, Hulu is also developing a live-action “Helstrom” series, which will star Elizabeth Marvel, Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon.

Marvel Television as we’ve known it the past decade will be no more. With its slate dwindling over the past year and its head Jeph Loeb set to depart, the television-focused division of Marvel Studios will be phased out.
The Marvel TV projects that are currently in production will continue but any further development is being scrapped. As a result, a significant portion of the unit’s staff are being laid off, sources said. The executives impacted are said to include Cort Lane, Marsha Griffin, Mark Ambrose, Tom Lieber and Aimee Carlson.
A handful of current Marvel TV executives, led by Karim Zreik, Svp Current Programming and Production, will join the Marvel Studios group to oversee the remaining Marvel TV shows already on the books and on the go.

Marvel TV is winding down. Two months after the division was moved under Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, the TV-arm of Marvel is ending all of its development plans.
Marvel TV will complete all of its projects that are currently in development, which include the final season of ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” that will air next summer, but will not continue beyond that. Those also include the four animated series that are currently in development at Hulu, as well as the live-action “Helstrom.”
The integration of Marvel TV under Marvel Studios will include layoffs as a result, both in the immediate future and long term, once development on all current Marvel TV shows is completed. The move effectively shutters the division as it will be absorbed by Marvel Studios — though the Marvel TV name may still continue.

The universe has quickly become the place to be. Such companies as Marvel have taken over the film world with their intricately plotted universes, in which individual projects are tied together by sharing characters, settings and plot points. DC Entertainment has films including “Justice League,” with plenty of other examples either already released or on the way.
The trend has also carried over into television. Marvel has five series on Netflix alone, four of which played into “The Defenders” crossover event series in 2017. The fifth, “The Punisher,” was launched off the title character’s appearance in “Daredevil” season two. Then there’s the “Arrow”-verse on the CW, which features such DC heroes as Green Arrow, the Flash and Supergirl.
The shared universe phenomenon is not limited to superheroes, however. AMC launched the “Walking Dead” sister series “Fear the Walking Dead” in 2015, with original series character Morgan Jones (Lennie James...

We all know that Marvel is looking to be more diverse with the projects that they develop. One of those things they are looking to do is focus on female characters. It was revealed today by Marvel Television Svp of Original Programming, Karim Zreik, that the company is "for sure" looking to develop "more female-skewed shows".
She went on to tease one of these female led shows that they are currently developing. She doesn't give a name, but she does say that it is a "Jessica Jones-esque" project. That leads me to believe that whatever they are doing will be a gritty, hard-edged series.
There are lots of hardcore female characters like that in the Marvel Universe. A few of the first names to pop in my head are Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, Singularity, and She-Hulk. These are all pretty badass Marvel characters that could have great series, built around them.

It looks like ABC have seen the success Netflix have had with Jessica Jones and have decided they want a piece of the action. Speaking at the Edinburgh Television Festival (as reported by THR), Marvel Television senior VP of original programming Karim Zreik talked about the projects they have in development. As well as mentioning familiar series such as Inhumans and Cloak and Dagger, Zreik revealed that Marvel and ABC are also working on a new show described as “Jessica Jones-esque.”
That’s all we know right now, but it’s enough to get fans excited. The big question is: which Marvel comics property could the show be based off? Well, first we have to ascertain what Zreik means by “Jessica Jones-esque.” The simplest option would be that it’s also based around a female superhero/private detective. This leaves a couple of options given Marvel’s back catalogue.

Marvel and ABC are teaming up again to bring what sounds like a female-centric show to television...
While speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Marvel Television's senior vice president of original programming Karim Zreik dropped the news that the entertainment company is developing a "Jessica Jones-esque" TV show with ABC.

In the same panel, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Zreik spoke more broadly about Marvel's desire to continue to diversify its TV audiences, bringing in not just comic book fans, but audiences of all genders and ages. Marvel currently has 14 TV series, with the Daredevil audience skewing male, the Jessica Jones audience skewing female, the Luke Cage audience "sort of a mix," and Iron Fist bringing in a younger demographic.
It's unclear which kind of audience, beyond female-skewing, this new Jessica Jones-esque show might bring in — or even what "Jessica Jones-esque" means.
