Cue "Goo Goo Muck" by The Cramps -- because it's time for "Wednesday" fans to get their groove back on. The second season of Netflix's immensely popular "Addams Family" spinoff series is now officially in production in Ireland after being postponed due to last year's extremely necessary dual actors and writers' strikes. Jenna Ortega will once again lead the way as the titular character, who is still her usual unsmiling and morbid self here. Well, except that, in a twist that left a lot of longtime "Addams Family" enthusiasts confused, season 1 transformed Wednesday into a cross between a Veronica Mars-style teen sleuth and a superhero, complete with heretofore unknown psychic powers.
While our own review wasn't keen on season 1, "Wednesday" broke out in a major way with the youths, not least of all thanks to characters like Wednesday's bubbly werewolf roommate -- and, should all the "Wenclair" shippers get their way,...

Three years ago, platforms were asking Spanish producers for full rights to their TV fiction projects for all territories.
Times have changed. As platforms’ revenues taper off or slow in growth, originals are less habitual. Co-production is increasingly becoming the name of the game.
A first-phase boom was triggered by Netflix titles “Money Heist” and “Elite.”
Now, Spain is maintaining its momentum, remaining a priority region for Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video. Newcomers Disney+, Paramount+ and Lionsgate+ have unveiled their first original productions.
Local champions, Telefonica’s paybox Movistar+ and Atresmedia’s platform Atresplayer Premium, harbor strong artistic ambitions.
As platforms pause production in parts of the world, and Netflix rejigs its business model, Spain’s TV producers are ringing their options, plunging ever more into co-production.
“The market is being rationalized and shared production models don’t leave all the rights in the platform’s hands,” says Caroline Servy,...

“It’s a dream come true,” exclaims production designer Maria Caso of working with John Logan. She collaborated with Logan on the new Showtime series “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” and brought Los Angeles of 1938 to life. A period specific look isn’t enough for Caso, as she goes to great lengths to infuse character into each set. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“I consider him to be a historian,” Caso explains, referring to series creator and writer Logan. “He has a depth of knowledge of so many things.” That wealth of knowledge arrived in a thick packet of historical information about 1938, which Logan gave to the design team on day one. “The show is about racial, political issues in 1938” which still ring true in today’s world, according to Caso. So in order to “honor the stories” of that time, she and her team spent three days speaking...

“Everything feels vibrant and alive,” describes director Paco Cabezas of the show “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.” Cabezas directed the first two episodes of Showtime’s new horror noir story and worked hard to find the right tone for the story. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
One of the biggest hurdles in shooting was figuring out how to pull off elements of horror in a sunny location. “City of Angels” is set in 1938 Los Angeles, a far cry from the grim, gothic locales of the original “Penny Dreadful” series. Cabezas has plenty of experience in the world of horror, having helmed Spanish thriller “The Appeared,” and installments of “Fear the Walking Dead” and “The Strain.” But, he admits that this bright setting was “virgin territory” for scary happenings.

The world of “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” blends realism with the fantastical world of the supernatural, and as its cast and creator will tell you, this mix allows a story often ignored by history books to flourish. The new spin-off, airing on Showtime, follows Santiago “Tiago” Vega (Daniel Zovatto), the first Chicano detective on the Lapd, as he investigates a murder with possible ties to the growing unrest in his community. The world of 1938 Los Angeles comes to life with an in-depth exploration of the Zoot Suit Riots and the creation of the Arroyo Seco freeway, mixed in with a good versus evil struggle involving supernatural beings.
Both series creator John Logan and actress Natalie Dormer make allusions to the show and our current political landscape. “If you think where we were the last five years,” says Dormer, “what both our countries [Britain and America] have gone through, the polarization of right versus left,...

Spain’s Seville-based shingle La Claqueta and Portugal’s SPi have clinched a co-development agreement for three fiction projects a year. Companies first made contact at last year’s Conecta Fiction, the annual co-production meet in Spain.
The companies have also pacted to co-produce the animated feature-length docu “El viaje más largo” in collaboration with Portuguese pubcaster Rtp and Spain’s Tve and Etb networks.
The agreements dovetail with both companies’ ambitions to further expand their international reach and in La Claqueta’s case, its bid to venture into fiction TV series.
“After many years producing documentary series, we believe the time has come to make the leap into creating serialized fiction,” said La Claqueta CEO Olmo Figueredo in a statement, adding: “But we wanted to do it hand in hand with an international partner of SPi’s stature, a company with years of experience in that market.”

Spain’s big shoot business is rocking, galvanized by more regional options and incentives that are highly competitive — at least in rates.
With a long tradition of hosting international productions, Spain earned larger global visibility after “Game of Thrones” filmed there from 2014 to 2018.
Production services has become one of the healthiest audiovisual sectors in Spain, driven by a golden age of local and international TV drama, as well as greater legal stability of its incentives. Spain’s mainland offers 20% tax rebates for international productions, capped at €3 million ($3.4 million); in the Canary Islands, the rate is 40%, with a €5.4 million ($6.1 million) ceiling.
“Tax advantages are attracting all kind of international productions,” says Nostromo’s Adrián Guerra, president of producers’ association Profilm.
“There are so many productions going on all over Spain that it’s becoming difficult to crew up on new productions,” he adds.
Challenges remain. The tax system is predominantly luring low-to-mid-range foreign projects.

The best episode of American Gods Season 2 delves deeply into the madness of Mad Sweeney.
This American Gods review contains spoilers.
American Gods Season 2 Episode 7
Only two characters have felt completely “on” in American Gods Season 2. Laura Moon is one. The other is her frequent scene partner, Mad Sweeney. I've praised their scenes together this season as some of the better ones thus far, and that praise continues when they're separated from one another, too.
The rest of the ensemble may seem a bit groundless, but Mad Sweeney continues to be the anchor of the second season, keeping American Gods from going adrift in stormy seas. Thankfully, he gets his own episode, highlighting his journey not to America, but how a quasi-mythological king in Ireland became a giant, fist-fighting leprechaun, tracking the various versions and transmutations of the Mad Sweeney myth before settling on the version that best fits American Gods.

When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto) is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

In its continued bid to invest in Spanish film production, Sony Pictures International Productions has pacted with Enrique López Lavigne’s Apache Films to co-produce “Adios” by Spanish writer-director Paco Cabezas, who marks his return to Spain with the crime drama.
Cabezas has been building a notable international portfolio that includes “American Gods,” “Penny Dreadful,” “The Alienist,” “Fear the Walking Dead,” and “Neon Flesh.”
“Returning to Seville, the South, to the streets where I grew up, to shoot this film is a dream come true,” Cabezas said. “I’ve learned much from my work in Hollywood; each series, from “Penny Dreadful” to “American Gods,” has helped me grow as a director.”
“And I was dying to find a powerful story, moving, action-packed, made not only for a Spanish audience, but with an international [appeal], to be told in my land,” he added.

AMC’s martial arts drama Into the Badlands will end after the upcoming final eight episodes of its third season, which will debut March 24. The network also has set an April 24 premiere date for Season 2 of drama The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan, which will be its last.
Neither cancellation is particularly surprising. Both Into the Bandlands and The Son were renewed for Season 3 and Season 2, respectively, almost two years ago. Into the Badlands’ 16-episode third season was completed awhile ago, the cast was released, and a number of them have taken on new acting gigs. As for The Son, as a Western, it did draw respectable viewership though it was old-skewing. Additionally, I hear star Brosnon only had signed a short-term contract which is the case with many movie stars who do TV series these days.
