With Spooky Season firmly in the rear view mirror, Trace and I are now mid-way through our month on Toxic Masculinity. And while we probably could have counted Apt Pupil (and maybe even Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2), we officially kicked things off with Michael Haneke’s Funny Games.
Things get considerably darker with our second entry: Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel‘s Deadgirl. The extreme film follows two high school teenage boys – Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) – who discover a zombie girl (Jenny Spain) in an abandoned hospital and make the horrific decision to use her as a sex object rather than alert the authorities.
As Rickie struggles with his guilty conscience, Jt recruits other “friends” like Wheeler (Eric Podnar) to assault the girl. Things get out of hand, however, when a pair of jocks, including Johnny (Andrew Dipalma) – the boyfriend of Rickie’s crush,...

Trent Haaga has spent more than 15 years establishing himself in the realm of indie filmmaking. An esteemed graduate of Troma University, where he got his start as the writer on Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger 4, Haaga also penned Deadgirl and Cheap Thrills (and numerous other projects), and has made appearances in over 50 films to date. While Chop, a 2011 micro-budget horror comedy that has been grossly overlooked, may have been Haaga’s first-ever time in the director’s seat, it’s with his follow-up effort, 68 Kill, that he cements himself as a filmmaking force of nature who continues to build a strong foundation as a purveyor of cult cinema.
With a screenplay based on Bryan Smith’s book of the same name, 68 Kill introduces us to Chip (Matthew Gray Gubler), a trailer-dwelling nice guy who pumps sewage for a living and is completely infatuated with his out-of-control girlfriend, Liza (AnnaLynne McCord...

The Los Angeles based band, consisting of Eric Podnar (vocals / guitar), Brett Hamilton (bass / vocals) and Jeremy Cull (drums), is set to release their self-titled Ep on Feb. 26. “Falling Still” includes six anthems that are full of grit and heart. If you’re already a fan of their previous releases, you’ll be excited to know that the upcoming Ep channels the energy from those releases and intensifies it, thanks to band’s producer and engineer Michael Parnin (Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Rage Against The Machine), who also [ Read More ]

Drawing from a broad range of influences the likes of Boxing Helena, director Atom Egoyan, and the collective works of David Cronenberg, this dirty micro-budgeted little nasty comes front-loaded with a provocative squirm-inducing premise that will no doubt drive strong ancillary business. But randy adolescents open for a thinly veiled skin flick will be largely disappointed. Similarly, those sick to the back teeth of torture porn would do well not to dismiss this as just another bandwagoner, as co-directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel have far more on their minds here than simply mining a gimmick for the purposes of titillation.
Penned by bit-part-actor-turned-screenwriter Trent Haaga, a man with a long and undistinguished career acting in the realm of Dtv horror, Deadgirl sketches out an eerily plausible portrait of horny adolescent maledom taken to its grim but logical conclusion. Skipping out on class for the afternoon, high school misfit Rickie...

Frightening. That’s the best way to describe Deadgirl, an impressive effort by co-directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel based on an ingenious script by Trent Haaga that takes an uncomfortably harsh look at gender-sexual dominance. It’s frightening on multiple levels. It's a perennially f--ked up movie.
Yes, it’s another zombie film, but like Let the Right One In’s treatment of vampires, Deadgirl lets the horror emerge not from the ghastly ghoulies but from the dark impulses developed by the uncertainty of growing up. The premise alone is pure brilliance, but where the film takes its teenage characters to is a real revelation of both talent and the male psyche.
The Deadgirl in question is a sexy naked girl (a brave and sporting Jenny Spain) two aimless boys Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) find chained in the basement of an abandoned asylum. Realizing that she’s undead and unclaimed,...
