High & Low: John Galliano review – Kevin Macdonald’s candid look at the fashion designer’s implosion
The film-maker’s frank, even-handed documentary assesses the fallout from the former Dior creative director’s antisemitic tirade and his standing today
There’s an argument to be made that we have heard everything we ever need to hear from John Galliano, the subject of this knotty, complex documentary portrait. That after the formerly celebrated and adored British fashion designer was filmed, booze-sodden, bitter and spewing an antisemitic tirade at strangers from his preferred corner seat in La Perle, his local bar in Paris, his legacy should have been buried and the attention of the fashion world should have moved on to other, less radioactively compromised figures. But, as the Washington Post journalist Robin Givhan drily observes: “Fashion has a very short memory”, particularly, she adds, when it comes to well-connected white men with powerful friends.

Kevin Macdonald’s moving 2018 bio-doc, Whitney, did a great job of fortifying Whitney Houston’s legacy while wiping away the smear of the predatory celebrity culture that made a mockery of one of contemporary pop’s most exceptional talents during the worst and most public period of her drug addiction. Another price-of-fame subject, disgraced British fashion designer John Galliano, is a trickier prospect that does the director no favors.
If you come to this film looking for a brisk overview of his achievements in couture, you might find High & Low more than serviceable. Footage of shows, especially from Galliano’s big-budget tenure as creative director at Dior make for fabulous wardrobe porn, highlighting the haute theatricality and ravishing romance that turned him into a fashion rock star. But if you’re expecting the definitive closing leg of the redemption tour, it’s unlikely you’ll find this a persuasive argument...

In November 1973, the fashion world gathered at the Palace of Versailles, an emblem of French opulence, for a fundraiser turned unforgettable event. The Battle of Versailles was a runway show that pitted French designers against American ones, a David and Goliath situation between couture royalty and new-world entrants. What the Americans lacked in theatrics and set design, however, they made up for in personality. Out of the 36 models America invited to walk, 10 of them were Black — an unprecedented number for the industry (then and, quite truthfully, now). Among them was Bethann Hardison, who speaks of the experience in Invisible Beauty, a documentary she co-directed with Frédéric Tcheng (Dior and I).
“I knew that these people thought that we were less,” Hardison said of the French spectators in attendance. “The more I walk, the harder and stronger and more intense I become with an attitude.” Her walk was purposeful, vigorous and defiant.

Multiple Emmy contenders this season are focused on the downfall of or investigations into large corporations and institutions: Hulu’s The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For, Netflix’s White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch, Netflix’s Downfall: The Case Against Boeing and Amazon Prime Video’s LuLaRich.
Here’s what The Hollywood Reporter’s critics had to say about each.
The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For (Hulu)
Hulu’s The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For is a docuseries about a once-inescapable fad, a show that feels bound by two ubiquitous trends of the moment: 2000s nostalgia and true crime. But it fails to divine what should be the big takeaway of any look back at a what-were-we-thinking craze — that just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s a good look.

Will.i.am debuted a new pro-Joe Biden video this week along with Jennifer Hudson that has an uplifting message, but he also was sharply critical of President Donald Trump.
In a conversation with The Washington Post Live, the Black Eyed Peas singer took issue with Trump’s claim that he has done more for the Black community than any president since Abraham Lincoln.
The Post‘s Robin Givhan asked will.i.am whether he felt that Trump was drawing the support of young African American and Latino men.
“Most of the people that I see hopping the bandwagon, it is tax based. …It’s about money. It’s not about decency. It’s not about preparation for tomorrow,” he said. “That is what I see. And they are believing the lies and the shenanigans and his empty promises and his tall claims of how great he is. And comparing himself to Abraham Lincoln.
