Elaine L. Liu was born in Yunnan, China, and grew up in suburban Ohio. She developed a passion for film and directing at an early age. Growing up under her grandparents literary tutelage, Liu found herself gravitating towards stories that offer a view into events of social and historical significance.
Liu received a B.F.A. degree from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2006. Her directorial debut premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, and went on to screen at over 30 other film festivals worldwide. Notable awards for the film include the Chris Columbus Film Production Award, the Clive Davis Award for Excellence in Music in Film, and the Carl Lerner Award for Film with Social Significance. In addition, Liu was selected as one of the top three up and coming female filmmakers to watch for in the Biore/Gen Art Uncover/Discover Competition.
More recently, Liu has worked on many studio, independent, and student films in various roles. She is currently collaborating on two feature screenplays with her writing partner / mentor, Jack Vandagriff, both of which have been optioned and are currently in pre-production.
