During his early career, Danny Chan Kwok Kwan, actor and Jeet Kune Do practitioner portrayed Bruce Lee in the 50-episode TV series “The Legend of Bruce Lee” (2008) due to his resemblance to him. After his portrayal of the Bruce Lee look-alike goalkeeper in Stephen Chow's “Shaolin Soccer” he became more popular which led him to further playing Lee in the “Ip Man” film series. However, in “Desperado” or “Thug in a Suit” as translated from its Chinese title, he finally has the chance to shine as a leading man.
Set in Taicheng, a made up city somewhere in Southeast Asia, most likely Thailand or Cambodia, this online iQIYI film kicks off with a great action set piece in which the thug in a suit, Zhao Ke, comes to a butchery warehouse alone to rescue his sworn brother Barno. The warehouse is actually a front for drug smuggling and a trap to lure him in.

Throughout the "Ip Man" franchise's run, there's been an awkward question plaguing the popular film series. The Donnie Yen-led action movies have proven incredibly successful in their native Hong Kong and mainland China, also managing to gain fans internationally. Combined, the four movies have earned almost 422 million at the global box office, telling an exaggerated and often downright fabricated version of the life of the eponymous Wing Chun grandmaster.
Since "Ip Man" released in 2008, Yen, along with his director Wilson Yip and producer Raymond Wong (both of whom are Hong Kong natives), have returned time and time again to the story of the real-life Ip Man as inspiration for their fantastical retelling. As Yen said when promoting "Ip Man 3" in 2016, while his character is "based on a real person," he and the production team "didn't want to make a documentary," instead aiming to "create a new type of hero on film.

Since 2008, Donnie Yen has been dispatching all manner of foes in the Ip Man franchise. But his most dangerous encounter may well have been when he faced off against Mike Tyson in the third installment.
Based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man, the franchise stars Yen in the title role and loosely tells Ip Man's story. The first film, which earned its place as one of the great kung fu movies, depicts his early days in Foshan during the Sino-Japanese War, while "Ip Man 2" finds Yen's hero in 1940s Hong Kong where he faces down British police. By the time it came to the third film, Yen, who also appeared in "Rogue One" and Disney's live-action "Mulan" remake needed something a little more formidable to face down. Enter Iron Mike.

Alex Law, the famed Hong Kong director and screenwriter behind Echoes of the Rainbow, Painted Faces and An Autumn’s Tale, has died. He was 69.
The South China Morning Post reported that Law died Sunday with director Mabel Cheung, his long-time partner and collaborator, by his side. In a double blow to Hong Kong’s cultural landscape, Law died on the same day as the influential novelist and prolific screenwriter Ni Kuang.
Along with Cheung, Law was responsible for creating some of the most enduring classics of Hong Kong cinema, including the Cheung-directed Migration Trilogy. The duo’s films were known for their realistic, and somewhat romantic, portrayals of their fellow Hongkongers, offering nuanced views of society as well as the diaspora and tapping into nostalgia for the time before the 1997 handover.

Can this Kung Fu League help save the day? Chinese distributor United Entertainment Partners released this Hong Kong action comedy last fall. This is not a new trailer, but we never featured it whenever it first appeared last year. So why not now...! (Thanks to a tip from Rob.) It looks crazy fun, and super cheesy, and perhaps some renewed interest in this will help it get an international release. Kung Fu League is a big-hearted comedy about a comic book artist nerd who "summons four legendary Kung Fu masters to learn the highest level of martial arts" so he can win the heart of a girl at his office. It's the latest film from Kung Fu Hustle director Jeffrey Lau, and already opened in theaters in China last year. Starring Ashin as Fei Ying Xiong, Kwok-Kwan Chan, Jay Chou, Madina Memet, Andy On, Yu-Hang To, and Vincent Zhao. The...

Bruce Lee is well known for his martial arts abilities, but have you ever wondered how his fame and notoriety came to be? The story of Bruce Lee is told in full in the upcoming DVD release of “Legend Of Bruce Lee: Volume One,” which debuts on November 1, 2016.
Volume one stars Danny Chan who plays a younger, college-aged Lee. At this point in Lee’s life, Lee has no interest in studying or perusing the normal path students his age normally do; his passion is for martial arts. Lee resolves himself to this passion after losing a street fight to some gang members. He finds his master, Master Ye Wen, and begins his tutelage of Kung Fu. Slick choreography fails to lift this patchy third instalment of the martial arts series
This third instalment in the quasi-biographical series ruffled feathers during pre-production when it was announced that a CGI simulacrum would be employed to bring Bruce Lee back from the dead to play himself. Lee’s estate protested, and the plan was dropped, the incidental role being filled instead by Danny Chan. Sadly, the necessary technology does not exist to breathe life into Mike Tyson’s performance as lumbering thug Frank, who speaks two languages but is coherent in neither. Donnie Yen returns as Ip Man, with whom we pick up in Hong Kong, 1959.
There’s a West Side Story liveliness to some early scenes, after which the patchy story plods messily towards a projected showdown with Cheung Tin-chi (played by Zhang Jin, who had an eye-catching role in Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster), who challenges Ip...

Donnie Yen is poised and impassive as the legendary martial arts master Ip Man, whose pupils included the young Bruce Lee
Here is the final part of a boisterous Hong Kong trilogy about the legendary martial arts master Ip Man, who in the 1950s taught the wing chun style of kung fu to Hong Kong and thereby to the world – and numbered among his pupils the young Bruce Lee, here played by Danny Chan.
Donnie Yen returns to play the poised and impassive Ip Man, heroically battling for the underdog in local skirmishes and dealing with foreign devils including a corrupt British police captain and a thuggish American boxer, played in cameo by Mike Tyson. It’s fast and furious, with streaks of broad comedy and sentimentality, and so arguably in line with the more popular tradition of wuxia, very different from the higher-brow and more glacial Chinese version playing on the international festival circuit.

The first clip from Ip Man 3 has been released, and it features Donnie Yen as Yip Man meeting a confident Bruce Lee, who is played by Kwok-Kwan Chan. In the clip, Lee reminds Yip Man that he came to him as a child looking to study with him, and Yip goes right into testing Lee's martial arts skills and speed. It's a pretty awesome clip that fans of this franchise should enjoy. I'm a huge fan of the first two films, and I'm excited to see this third chapter!

If you're a fan of martial arts films and you haven't seen the trailer for Ip Man 3 yet, do yourself a favor and check it out. Donnie Yen reprises his role as Ip Man, and he'll fight Mike Tyson — who plays a real estate developer — in the big showdown that marks the film's major selling point. But there's something else notable about this film: it was once slated to have a CGI version of Bruce Lee, the famous martial artist and actor who was trained by the real Ip Man.
But thanks to six new character posters for the new film, it appears that the idea of a CG version of Lee has been nixed. Instead, it looks like Hong Kong actor Danny Chan will portray him, as he did in the TV series The Legend of Bruce Lee. That seems like a much better alternative than a fully CG version,...

The legend continues this January... Well Go USA has debuted the first Us teaser trailer for Ip Man 3, the latest sequel in the Ip Man martial arts series starring Donnie Yen (appearing in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2) as the martial arts grandmaster Yip Man, who taught Bruce Lee. This time he comes face to face, literally, with "Iron" Mike Tyson for a fight. There isn't any dialogue in this teaser, but there is a whole crapload of kick ass action teases. The cast includes Patrick Tam, Lynn Hung, Kent Cheng and Kwok-Kwan Chan. This is worth a watch just to get a glimpse at some of the amazing martial arts action in this! If you're already a fan of this series, don't miss out on more. Here's the first official Us teaser trailer for Wilson Yip's Ip Man 3, direct from...

Well Go Entertainment will be unleashing Wilson Yip's Ip Man 3 on North American audiences on 22 January 2016, and have just unveiled their first trailer for the film. There's plenty of new footage of Donnie Yen squaring off against Max Zhang and Mike Tyson, but there is also a quick glimpse of a certain nose-thumbing martial arts legend at around the 10 second mark, which might very well be our first look at Bruce Lee.Previous statements relating to the character being portrayed digitally in the film seem to have been exaggerated. Danny Chan Kwok Kwan (of Shaolin Soccer and The Legend of Bruce Lee TV series) is apparently reprising his role as Lee, albeit with some degree of CG augmentation. Either way, Ip Man 3...

I couldn’t believe my eyes when i first seen that Donnie Yen will be returning to the Ip Man series, this time the movie will be shot in 3D. To see this on the big screen in 3D would be amazing, so i’m hoping this will get a world wide release (One can dream i guess).
The news was confirmed by the publicist of Donnie Yen, and as claimed that Donnie is very excited about returning to one of his biggest roles to date. Edmond Wong who is the movies script writer, said we will see Ip Man’s most famous student, the legendary Bruce Lee, play a massive part in the movie, though Ip Man will remain the film’s central character.
“What is certain is that the film will begin with Bruce Lee becoming Ip Man’s disciple. As for who will play Bruce Lee, we...

There have been a number of attempts to bring the short life of martial arts legend Bruce Lee to the screen. In the years following his untimely death in 1973 Bruceploitation was born, a whole new genre created to continue Lee’s legacy starring lookalike actors with names such as Bruce Li and Bruce Le in films either emulating Lee’s style and re-hashing his previous films or taking the biopic route and telling fantastical, mythical interpretations of Lee’s life. As new stars began to emerge from the martial arts scene the genre was thankfully short lived, despite this the desire to tell a definitive version of the Bruce Lee story never faded.
In 1993 director Rob Cohen made a valiant effort at bringing Lee’s story to life with Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. Starring Jason Scott Lee (no relation) in the leading role the film had all the elements...

Keep your eyes open for upcoming Singapore based martial arts picture Spirit Of Fight. Because if the recently released promo reel for the picture is any indication the film could very well push Danny Chan over the hump and make a major international action star out of him.
Though the film is still very much in early days and information is sketchy - there's not even a clear statement of who is directing the thing - here's what we know.
Inspired at least partially by the anniversary of Bruce Lee's death the film is a tournament style fight film set in the world of international mixed martial arts. Taking the lead is Danny Chan, whose resemblance to Bruce Lee led to a high profile support part in Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer, the lead in television series The Legend Of Bruce Lee and a handful of other supporting roles in recent feature films.
