"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" isn't really the kind of series known for making dreams come true, but in 2019, series' creator Rob McElhenney got to make his character Mac's dream come true... in the real world! The series has crossed into the real world before when the gang featured in an online video game that they then played in the episode "Charlie Rules the World," but things got taken up a notch when McElhenney was invited to help Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley throw the ceremonial first pitch at Utley's final Phillies game. The two reunited in the season 16 episode "The Gang Gets Cursed," and things didn't go as well for Mac in the "Sunny" universe as they did in the real one.

The gang from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" are all Philadelphia natives who have spent their entire lives residing in the City of Brotherly Love, but only one of the actors is actually from Philly. Charlie Day (Charlie) grew up in Rhode Island, Kaitlin Olson (Dee) is from Oregon, Danny DeVito (Frank) is from New Jersey, and Glenn Howerton (Dennis) is from an Air Force family who traveled all over but eventually settled in Alabama. That leaves only Rob McElhenney (Mac), the series creator, who was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That's right, McElhenney is the only true Philly person, and much of the Philadelphia-related humor comes from his personal experiences.
Over the years, Philadelphia has become a character in the series as much as the gang, Rickety Cricket, Artemis, or any of the other kooky characters that interact with Philly's foul five. Whether the gang is trying out...

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has been going on for 16 seasons now, and the show still feels like it's got a good 16 seasons left to go. Of all the live-action sitcoms today, only "Curb Your Enthusiasm" can match up to the show's longevity, and "Curb" takes way longer breaks between seasons.
For a show to go on as long as "Always Sunny" has, there needs to be a strong creative code the writers abide by. That includes certain "jump the shark" roads the writers are fully aware of from the get-go, which they promise through sheer force of will to never go down. That's why "Always Sunny" has never done the much-maligned straightforward clip show episode, nor has it given any of its characters a child to take care of long-term. "Always Sunny" has learned from the mistakes of all the sitcoms before it, and it's managed to avoid those mistakes for nearly two decades.

Plot: This year alone, Mac battles with allergies and long-distance dating, Charlie takes on his long-forgotten sisters, Dee fights for rent control and women’s athletics, Frank wrestles for his gun, and Dennis struggles to improve his mental health. At the end of the day, they’re navigating 2023 with 16 years of baggage as a few figures from their past rear their heads.
Review: I love It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. There are few series that have managed to be as hilarious for as long. Before he was flying fighter jets in Top Gun: Maverick, Miles Teller wanted to be a pro baseball player. Dreams really do come true sometimes.
Rob McElhenney had “a catch” with former Phillies second baseman Chase Utley during the player’s retirement ceremony Friday, fulfilling the life-long dream of the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” co-creator/star’s character, Mac, on the Fxx series.
Readers can watch the video above to see the pair toss the ball around in front of more than 40,000 people ahead of the Phillies game against the Miami Marlins.

The Major League Baseball playoffs have been nothing short of electric so far—and we've been witnessing more than one kind of talent out on the field. The Kansas City Royals staged the most epic of comebacks against the Houston Astros on Monday to even up their series, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Chase Utley is the now the most wanted man in New York due to the most controversial slide since...well, ever—and the Chicago Cubs have been so great, fans seem to have completely forgotten that poor Steve Bartman is practically in witness protection. So are the Cubs on track to win their first World Series since 1908? And while Jon Hamm's Cardinals are out, there's still a chance to...

So instead, we got lumberjacks loitering, Divas dissing and Dolph Ziggler channeling Chase Utley and fighting dirty against John Cena. But in the end, was there really much of anything?...

When I read that Bette Midler had to drop out of the Phil Spector biopic on HBO due to a back problem, I wondered just who, exactly, do you replace Bette Midler with? She is quite unique. Today I got my answer – Helen Mirren is the equivalent to Bette Midler according to Hollywood logic.
Well, this is awkward. I count David Badash as a friend, and my inability to get along online with Dan Savage is fairly well documented. So to find myself agreeing with Savage over David, well, it's strange. But I don't think it's fair, practical, or true to marriage itself, much less gay history, to insist that Savage drop his personal choice and professional opinion that monogamy is optional in a marriage, just because he's a figurehead. I get very uncomfortable when someone suggests we go Stepford to get ahead.

This may not be the best season of It's Always Sunny, but it's certainly been one of the most adventurous. I can't remember a previous season where they've spent so little time at the bar, let alone took an adventure to Atlantic City where "The Gang Gets Stranded in the Woods."
Overall, this week's installment wasn't the funniest of the season, but easily one of our favorite due to a very strong A story and a fun plot line that tied the two stories perfectly together at the end.
We'll talk about the A story first. First off, Charlie and Dennis need to be partnered up more often. Dennis, who is probably the worst human being of the group (and that's saying something!) was a hilariously bad influence on the easily manipulated Charlie as he convinced him to say yes to everything.
That, of course, led to an amazing adventure...

Somewhere in Jersey? In Jersey??
I've said in the past that Sunny has taken some big, risky steps this season and they've mostly payed off. Tonight's Sunny, taking place entirely in New Jersey, was quite the big, risky step.
On their way to an animal charity event in Atlantic City, the gang crash their car while taking the scenic route. Dennis and Charlie gradually make their way into the city, encountering a scary truck driver named Byron (played by Tom Sizemore). Meanwhile, Mac, Dee and Frank wander the woods while debating whether or not they should eat various woodland creatures. Once Dennis and Charlie make it to the event, they pose as Frank and Mac and party with Philadelphia Phillies players Ryan Howard and Chase Utley.
The theme of the episode was Charlie learning to say "yes" to new adventures. He begins the episode in the trunk of Frank's care...

AfterElton.com editor Michael Jensen posted his Hot 100 picks a few weeks ago in the Best Gay Week Ever column, but it turns out that the other writers around here have very different tastes in men. We didn't want you thinking Michael's picks were the de facto "official" AfterElton.com selections or anything. Michael's drunk enough with power already.
So we rounded up the Hot 100 selections from all the peons as well. There are some surprises here – and very little overlap. Several of us went for unadulterated beefcake, but a few of our writers (no doubt the more insecure ones!) are clearly trying to impress you with a few highbrow and cerebral choices thrown in.
Check 'em out and see what you think. Who's list comes closest to your own?

If sports mascots didn't exist, would anybody bother to invent them? Think about this concept: Somebody dresses up as an adorable-looking (or frightening or goofy) animal (mythical creature, cartoonish-looking human or inanimate object with eyeballs) to dance, joke with fans, run around the playing surface and generally distract people who are otherwise not invested in whatever game is being played. It's all pretty absurd, isn't it? Serious sports fans detest all mascots, save for a handful of exceptions: Anything dancing at a college football game (because the student inside is probably intoxicated), Mr. Met, the Phoenix Suns Gorilla (but only when he's dunking) and the Philly Phanatic, the Philadelphia Phillies beast who recently channeled Lady Gaga in the middle of a game.
During a pitching change in the middle of the Phillies' Opening Day game against the Washington Nationals last week, the Phanatic danced to Gaga's hit "Bad Romance." He...

2009 is coming to a close, so in this final installment we thought we'd look back and gather together the best of the best. Hence The Year in Sports. (Well, technicaly the half-year in sports, since we only started this feature in July.)
Now we know not every football fan is also a tennis fan, and some rugby fanatics cannot abide men's gymnastics. So this time out we've helpfully sorted the photos by category. So the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez was last night's World Series hero, knocking a ninth-inning double for the go-ahead run and a 3-1 series lead against the Phillies. In tonight's Game 5, A. J. Burnett looks to mirror his one-run gem from last week as he takes the mound at Citizens Bank Park. With the Yanks possibly locking up the Fall Classic in a matter of hours, either of these guys could end up nabbing the series' Mvp award. Or the Phils could stage a comeback powered by Game 1 gods, Chase Utley and Cliff Lee.
Whatever happens, though, I know one thing: I detest both these teams because I am a heart-broken Mets fan (is there any other kind?). Forget home runs, some of the baseball stars slugging it out in this year's World Series are just worth taking home! Two of the Philadelphia Phillies hotties turning heads this season are 30-year-old Chase Utley at second base and pitcher Cole Hamels, 25. Sorry, ladies, they both may be easy on the eyes, but they're spoken for. Utley married college sweetheart (and fellow animal lover) Jennifer Cooper in 2007. He hails from California and comes up to bat to the song "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin. Hamels's wife may be familiar to Survivor fans - Heidi Strobel was a contestant on the sixth season of the reality show.
