Hulu’s “Dollface” has its Season 2 premiere on Friday, and Kat Dennings reprises her role as an ever-reluctant Jules, guided once again by the Cat Lady (a snarky cat-headed sage voiced by Beth Grant). While the first season followed Jules in her attempt to reconnect with college friends after a breakup, Season 2 takes us on the reconciled group’s sometimes-rocky-sometimes-rhapsodic ride to 30.
Jules, Madison (Brenda Song), Izzy (Esther Povitski) and Stella (Shay Mitchell) navigate new jobs, new relationships and new trials in their friendship. This new stage takes them to some wild places — from tripping at a music festival to starting a bar just for women — all punctuated by the sharply observant magical realism of the show’s first season.
Series creator Jordan Weiss developed the initial idea in her early 20s, premiering the show on Hulu in 2019 at just 26. Now, Season 2 boasts an all-women director slate as well as...

Nothing feels better than when a film wins you over, fully and truly. The Peanut Butter Falcon is all heart and inspires joy within you from start to finish. Flying under the radar, this adventure story is one of the year’s absolute gems, in a way that nothing else can fully touch. There’s simply no other movie like this one out in the world. There’s magic in this picture, engrained in its very core. You won’t even be able to put your finger on it until the end. It’s simply a feeling that wells up within you as the plot moves forward. Kudos to all involved for crafting something so tremendous. Presented as a modern day Mark Twain tale, the movie tells the story of Zak (Zack Gottsagen), a 22 year old man with Down syndrome who has the dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Stuck...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

A particularly hard type of film about which to write critically is the comedy of modest ambition that achieves its aim with an acceptable amount of appeal in playing, gags, plot, and outlook, but little more. One does not wish to criticize for not being more (not least as so many are so less), nor to overpraise its slight achievements, leaving one mostly in the territory of reportage, rather than critical appraisal. Which is a way of saying that such a film is Puerto Ricans in Paris, a perfectly inoffensive, oftentimes smile-raising fish-out-of-water/culture-clash comedy that does what it aims to do pretty much without fault.
The Puerto Ricans in question are Luis (Luis Guzmán) and Eddie (Edgar Garcia, like Guzmán, a regular on director Ian Edelman’s HBO series “How To Make It In America), and they play well together – Guzmán furrows his brow a lot, and Garcia is like a nice,...

Rob Simonsen has been writing music for the screen for nearly a decade now. His work can be heard in commercials for Apple and Nike as well as the TV series Dollhouse. Simonsen’s close relationship with composer Mychael Danna has afforded him the opportunity to provide additional music for many scores ranging from Little Miss Sunshine to Life of Pi. He has also co-composed music for (500) Days of Summer and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World with Danna and fellow composer Jonathan Sadoff, respectively.
After opening his own studio last year, he was approached to compose music for The Way, Way Back and The Spectacular Now, both of which debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival to enthusiastic critical acclaim. We were fortunate enough to have him talk to us about his friendship with Danna, his affinity for pop music, and what a whirlwind...

With the February 13th release of Beautiful Creatures coming soon, we chatted with cast members Alden Ehrenreich, Thomas Mann and Zoey Deutch and producer Broderick Johnson for some inside info on the film.
Speaking with our East Coast correspondent Nomad recently, Alden Ehrenreich, who plays Ethan Wate, gave us his point of view on the scope of the film. "There are a lot of different scenes in the movie," Ehrenreich said. "Scenes that are epic, scenes that are magic. The tone of the scenes that I'm in is romantic, charming, wonderful stuff. To me, parts of this movie feel like a romantic comedy because there's really these funny things, these bumblings and failings of someone trying to date someone, trying to get to know another person."
He continued describing the tone: "It's able to laugh at itself. It has wit, it has charm. It's a character-driven movie that has a sense of humor to it.

The Oscars are a little over two months away, and with so many fantastic films released throughout this year, the anticipation surrounding the announcement of the nominations next month is running on high.
So far, we’ve had the shortlists for the Best Animated Feature, the Best Visual Effects, and the Best Documentary categories.
Now the Academy has announced the list of 104 films that are eligible in the Best Original Score category, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what makes the final cut come nominations time next month.
I think Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight Rises is, hopefully, a lock, because it is amazing. I also loved James Horner’s score for The Amazing Spider-Man, but can’t decide whether or not I think it will earn a nomination.
Alexandre Desplat has three films in the running this year, with Argo, Rise of the Guardians,...

As far as I'm concerned, the two most memorable scores of the year belong to Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild. That said, I made an egregious and unforgivable mistake when filling out my Critics' Choice nominations and forgot to include not one of them, but Both of them! Shame. I feel it. Now I have to hope my fellow Bfca members came through where I failed. However, we will discuss Critics' Choice nominations more on the upcoming episodes of the RopeofSilicon podcast, for now we're talking Oscar as the Academy has released a complete list of all 104 original scores competing for Best Original Score at the 2013 Oscars. I have not yet posted my predictions for Best Original Score and while I am making a fuss above concerning Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild, I think both of those stand a very strong chance at a nomination this year.

With the end of the world coming, you might think that some truly apocalyptic sounds from bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Mogwai might be appropriate, but at least in the universe of "Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World," it looks like people are going to get reacquainted with old hits and classic tunes as they meet their untimely demise.
The soundtrack for the movie is a pretty decent blend of radio hits like "Devil Inside" by Inxs and "Dance Hall Days" by Wang Chung, oldies from The Beach Boys, The Walker Brothers and The Hollies, indie rock from French Kicks and Frank Black and even a seminal hip-hop tune in the form of "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" by P.M. Dawn.
All these and more will be on the disc when it lands on June 19th, with the film arriving in theaters a few days later on June 22nd.
