AGC Studios chief creative officer Lourdes Diaz has signed a new multi-year employment agreement and has been elevated to partner with a seat on the board of the independent film and television studio.
The promotion comes on the back of founders Stuart Ford, chairman and CEO, and Miguel Palos, chief operating office, themselves signing new multi-year agreements late last year.
Since AGC launched in 2018, it has become one of Hollywood’s leading production and financing players, with 41 major film and TV productions under its belt.
In a statement, Ford and Palos said Diaz had been a “hugely influential contributor to the company’s explosive growth.”
They added: “Aside from building a highly respected scripted television operation, in her broader role as chief creative officer she has shaped key decisions on the feature film and unscripted sides of the company, helped kickstart our Family and YA division and has made us...

Stuart Ford may have been named Variety’s Billion Dollar Producer, but the AGC Studios founder is already looking ahead to his next big milestone.
“We’ve raised more than $1.5 billion in production financing [over the last 17 years] and, the way our cinema business is evolving, who knows, in three or four years from now, I might be standing in front of you having achieved $1.05 billion at the box office!” said Ford.
The executive was feted by Variety at a May 19 cocktail reception in Cannes. Many of the super-producer’s business associates and partners, as well as industry friends, dropped by the Croisette villa to toast Ford, who was given the honor by Variety’s co-editor in chief Ramin Setoodeh.
“Variety invented words such as boffo, legit, sitcom, sex appeal and striptease. It’s my recollection that your colleagues have used [most] of these words to describe me and my companies over the years, but...

Most studios have struggled to keep high-level productions free of Covid-19 in the past year: Blockbusters such as “Mission: Impossible 7” and “The Batman” periodically paused as a result of positive cases. But AGC Studios and Centropolis’ sci-fi thriller “Moonfall” — one of the most expensive indie pics in years, with a budget of $140 million (second only to Luc Besson’s “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”) — has been wholly shot during the pandemic without any setbacks.
Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson, “Moonfall” follows a ragtag team’s mission into space to prevent the moon, knocked off its orbit by an unknown force, from a nasty collision course with Earth. U.S. distributor Lionsgate recently set a Feb. 4 release date, and AGC will preview early material at the Cannes virtual market in late June.

Moments ago, the Film Independent Spirit Awards announced their nominations for 2018. Essentially the Oscars of indie film, this is a time when certain movies can see their only true moment in the sun. As you’ll see below, the nominees this year represent both some major Academy Award players as well as some tiny titles that will go no further. That’s actually part of the real appeal of the Spirits, in that they place these flicks side by side. This seems like one of those years where the Spirit Award winners won’t cross over too much with Oscar, but that remains to be seen. First up, we can just go over the nominees. The Spirit Awards, nomination wise, were led this year by, in a surprise…We the Animals. Scoring five nominations, that led the field, with Eighth Grade, First Reformed, and You Were Never Really Here next in line with four.

Paul Schrader’s austere, intense thriller is billed as a return to the director’s ‘transcendental’ roots, although we suspect he never really left them at all. Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried and Victoria Hall immerse us in a country pastor’s dreadful impulse to act on spiritual values and strike back against evil.

Long a charismatic wheeler-dealer on the Croisette as Im Global’s principal, Stuart Ford returns to Cannes with a new company and a different mindset on how to best use the shifting landscape.
Ford didn’t plan to build Agc Studios until he left Im Global in an acrimonious exit last August. The dispute was with Donald Tang’s Tang Media Partners, who a year earlier bought Im Global for $200 million. But now, thanks to backing from Latin America’s MediaNet Partners, Symantec CEO Greg Clark and Image Nation Abu Dhabi, Ford thinks Agc is a better mousetrap.
He comes to Cannes with at least two $100 million budget pictures and will continue to play that game. But he fully expects the growing demand for content from streaming services to become an increasingly large part of Agc’s focus in the coming years. It provides a better opportunity for his and...
