If movies have taught us anything, it's that robots and AI can be resourceful and friendly, but they can turn on us in a second. That kind of manipulation was something MIT computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum explored in his studies. He also discovered that people are more likely to spill their guts to a robot since humans tend to anthropomorphize computer intelligence and respond to it somewhat emotionally. Roboticist Alexander Reben and filmmaker Brent Hoff were inspired by that idea and have created something called BlabDroid. The tiny robot is voiced by a very unthreatening-sounding seven-year-old boy and zips around asking people a series of preprogrammed questions. There's a digital camera mounted on the bot to capture the interactions. "Who do you...

“Open-air cinema as a means to an end,” is how Caspar Sonnen, the driving force behind Idfa DocLab summed up the vision for the Open Air Film Festival Amsterdam (a.k.a. Pluk de Nacht), the summertime tradition he co-founded back in 2003, when I last chatted with him over coffee at Two For Joy in Frederiksplein. He went on to explain that all the film schools and Netflix DVDs in the world can’t capture the magic of cinema like a single collective movie experience can. “Our organizational structure is that of a block party,” he added.
Interestingly, this indie movie evangelist also likened Pluk de Nacht – which, unlike NYC’s similarly spirited Rooftop Films, takes place over ten days in August, screening unreleased arthouse films gratis (and drawing anywhere from hundreds to thousands, depending on the weather, to its Het Stenen Hoofd location on Amsterdam’s scenic harbor) – to his favorite Internet ventures.

We're excited at the Austin Film Society to annouce that filmmakers Matthew Akers (Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present), Paola Mendoza (Entre Nos) and Brent Hoff (Wholphin) will be coming to town in August to serve on our 2012 Texas Filmmakers' Product Fund review panel. All three will be part of the process of dividing up the $100,000 in cash and in-kind support that will go toward helping Texas filmmakers work on their film and video projects.
Tfpf, created in 1996, has given away around $1.2 million to assist Texas filmmakers in getting their projects made. Funding for the program comes from revenues from benefit film premieres as well as donations and the Texas Commission on the Arts. So far, over 348 projects have been the beneficiary of Tfpf grants. This year, we received over 168 applications seeking funding. Grants for the 2012 Tfpf will be announced on Monday, August 27.

For most of its early stages, it seemed like the biopic "Dirty White Boy" could do no wrong. First, Michael K. Williams (aka Omar from HBO's "The Wire") was cast to play the late rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard (or Odb) in the film, and then it looked like the actual members of the Wu-Tang Clan were going to appear as themselves in the movie. While this blew our collective minds, the fact that the Wu-Tang would play themselves in a movie more or less about themselves alongside Williams had a suspicious element of being too good to be true. When Gza, Odb's cousin and fellow founding member of the Wu-Tang, announced he wasn't going to appear in the film, those suspicions were realized.
Gza won't be the only Wu-Tang member to step away from the biopic. Count Raekwon out too. Pitchfork got word from Raekwon's representatives that he...

While our minds were being blown by the possibility of Michael K. Williams playing Ol’ Dirty Bastard alongside the actual Wu-Tang Clan in the upcoming Odb biopic “Dirty White Boy,” Gza’s rep was writing to Pitchfork to say that ”[Gza] is not appearing in the Odb / Jarred Weisfeld movie. I can’t speak for the rest of the group, but definitely not true about Gza.”
To be fair, it was always unlikely that the entirety of the Wu-Tang Clan would appear, given each of the members’ busy schedules. We just hope that something will be worked out with the rest of the Wu that would allow them to appear in the film. Although who knows, maybe the filmmakers will be able to repeat their casting of Williams and find someone perfect for Gza, and the rest of the Clan if need be. Either that or maybe they could just hologram them in there or something.

(Fitting, that one should write a story pertaining to the Wu-Tang Clan on the day of Richard Dawson‘s death.)
Although our first (and only) report on Dirty White Boy — an Ol’ Dirty Bastard biopic led by Michael K. Williams — alleged that the film would put a strong focus on the man’s time in prison and subsequent, final years, room still exists for his old (dirty) crowd. In an interview with The New York Post, Williams said those involved with the film “have no desire to cast any actors as the Wu-Tang,” and will, therefore, “need all hands on deck.” If yours truly knew any Wu-Tang tunes — that is, other than their most famous song — I have no doubt that a good reference could be made. But here we are.

Music biopics come and go, but this spring minds were blown when the always awesome Michael K. Williams was cast as Ol' Dirty Bastard in the film "Dirty White Boy." Of course, any movie involving Odb has to include the Wu-Tang Clan, and the idea of trying to find actors to fill those roles would be a mind-boggling challenge. But likely, the filmmakers don't have to worry about that.
“[We] have no desire to cast any actors as the Wu-Tang,” Williams told the New York Daily News (via Shadow & Act). “We need all hands on deck.” The paper goes on to add that we can "expect to see" RZA, Gza, Method Man, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah in the film along with other members like Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and Cappadonna. So in short, it will be Michael K. Williams as Odb hanging out with actual Wu-Tang Clan, which is basically...

Comingsoon reports that Michael K. Williams is set to play Wu-Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard (Russell Jones) in a new biopic. Dirty White Boy is being developed by Lars Knudsen and Jack Vay Hoy's Parts & Labor, the team who produced Mike Mills' Beginners. Michael K Williams, who played drug vigilante Omar Little, to take role of controversial Wu-Tang Clan rapper in film
The actor who played drug vigilante Omar Little in TV series The Wire is to take on the role of Ol' Dirty Bastard in a film. Plans are moving ahead for Dirty White Boy, a movie based on the late and notorious rapper, starring the Baltimore crime drama's Michael K Williams.
Dirty White Boy focuses not just on Odb, born Russell Jones, but also on Jarred Weisfeld, the titular white boy, who met the musician when he was a 22-year-old VH1 production assistant. Weisfeld gradually became Odb's manager, Entertainment Weekly reports, engineering the rapper's comeback. His plan was cut short by Ol' Dirty Bastard's fatal drug overdose in November 2004.
Williams's casting comes courtesy of first-time director Joaquín Baca-Asay, best known as the cinematographer for Jay-z's 99 Problems music video.

With a life riddled by scandals, Wu-Tang Clan member Ol' Dirty Bastard seemed destined to be the subject of a biopic. And now Deadline announces Parts & Labor and Ocean Size Pictures are teaming up to bring Odb's story to the big screen with the drama Dirty White Boy, and have secured Michael K. Notably, this is not the biopic RZA spoke of last fall, which reportedly had Tracy Morgan and Eddie Griffin fighting for the lead. That untitled picture was penned by Odb's cousin Raeshawn; conversely, Dirty White Boy was written by Brent Hoff and rather than encompassing the whole of Odb's life will follow his rise and fall through the eyes of Jarred Weisfed, the VH1-intern-turned-manager who served as witness to Obd's highs and lows up until his death in 2004. If you were a hip-hop fan growing up in the 90′s, there was a good chance you owned at least one Wu Tang Clan album. Coming into mainstream consciousness in 1993 with the single “Protect Ya Neck”, Wu Tang grew to become one of the most influential voices in hip hop. While every member had skill behind the mic and could outclass nearly every other hip-hop artist they came across, the one that stood out the most was Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

While biopics on N.W.A. and Tupac have been talked about for a while now, and seem to be stuck in development, it looks like a movie about one of their contemporaries is not only moving forward, but has made a brilliant and bold casting choice: Michael K. Williams (aka Omar from "The Wire") will be playing Ol' Dirty Bastard in "Dirty White Boy." Fucking yes.
Back in 2009, RZA was talking up a biopic and cautioned that the rapper's "estate is kind of confused on what to do, and all the rights and all that shit" but it appears everything has been worked out. Penned by Brent Hoff, the film will be the directorial debut of Joaquin Baca-Asay, the cinematographer behind James Gray's "Two Lovers," "We Own The Night" and Mike Mills' "Thumbsucker." He's also a commerical and music video director who was the Dop behind Mark Romanek...

Why Watch? In this inspired documentary from Brent Hoff, scientific subject matters have five minutes to love as hard as they can in order to get their neural pathways to spike with oxytocin. There’s the old man committed to his wife of 50 years; the old woman who sees love as an evolution; the middle-aged man who’s been in love many times before; the young woman with a sweet boyfriend; the young woman who wants to see love as a universal; the young man focusing on his ex-girlfriend; and the 10-year-old boy who will try to win by sharing the love of a family member. “I can’t believe I picked a guy that, for fifty years, has just allowed me to be who I am.” Beyond a compelling subject, the documentary is shot in a sleek, modern style with an indie-synth score that wraps the clinical nature of it all in the warm glow of...

Screenwriter and director Brent Hoff, who we selected for this year’s 25 New Faces list, has a short out today that’s perfectly timed for Valentines Day. Called The Love Competition, it’s included as part of the next issue of Wholphin, will play at SXSW, but is now online courtesy of Wired and Wholphin.
The Love Competition looks at the neurochemistry of romance, pitting a group of contestants against each other as their brains are scanned while they are thinking of their lovers, their ex-lovers, or perhaps just the concept of love itself. Hoff, who won a Tribeca Sloan Prize for a recent marine biology-themed script, knows how to make science emotional.
From Wired:
To develop his latest “competition,” Hoff enlisted the help of researchers at the Stanford Center for Cognitive and Neurobiological Imaging. Research director Bob Dougherty assisted with development of the love test, while Melina Uncapher served...

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.

A conversation with comedian Derek Waters as he prepares for his largest show ever at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
Weston: Why the San Francisco Film Festival for a ‘Night with Derek Waters’ event?
Derek: Well, I chose San Francisco because I got asked to come here and I said, “Yes please.” Yeah, and in all seriousness it’s really exciting because “Wholphin” is the best DVD ever and that’s how Brent and I met ‘cause he asked me to do their show and it’s just cool, ‘cause none of these videos were really made for anyone to see who wasn’t sitting in front of a computer.
Seeing all these people sitting in front of their computers in a theater is gonna be pretty cool. I should have given everyone a laptop, sit down and just played it on the laptop, not on the screen. It’s a big deal tonight,...

Toh contributor Cameron Carlson explores McSweeney's innovative DVD experiment. The company’s stated goal: “To make you feel the way we felt when we learned that dolphins and whales sometimes, you know, do it.” Fair to say, Wholphin has carved out a unique niche. It can be surprising to see DVDs displayed in the McSweeney’s section of a local bookstore. Indie darling Dave Eggers’ renowned publishing enterprise started off by including short film collections in 2006, under the Wholphin DVD label, after a casual conversation four years ago when Eggers and lieutenant Brent Hoff noticed the peculiar dearth of short films on the consumer market. It seemed that many strong non-features spent their entire life cycle on the festival circuit or in famous filmmakers’ basements or museum ...

Debra Granik's "Winter's Bone" was the big winner in Park City Saturday night, as it won both the dramatic competition grand jury prize and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Earlier in the day, the gritty drama secured North American distribution through Roadside Attractions for release later this year.
The film, about an unflinching Ozark Mountain girl trudging through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her missing father, was adapted from the Daniel Woodrell novel by Granik and Anne Rosellini. Granik's previous film, the 2004 Sundance entry "Down to the Bone," won her a dramatic directing award.
The rest of the awards were fairly well spread around at the Saturday night ceremony hosted by David Hyde Pierce, who starred in the Park City at Midnight entry "The Perfect Host" this year.

One look at the filmmaker names below, and it appears as if the Sundance alumni have come out in droves. We find a known variety of filmmakers such as Spike Jonze (Being John Malcovich), Ira Sachs (Married Life), Nicholas Jasenovec (Paper Hearts), James Franco and the Zellner bros. who have dabbled this year in the short form while working in between their feature film projects. - I'd be willing to bet that its the commonly available digital filmmaking and editing technologies that is the core reason for the record breaking amount of short films submitted (6,092) to Sundance this year. Personally, you'll only hear me complain that watching movies is a tough job come day 8 of a major film festival, but imagine being one the programmers having to plow threw hundreds of pieces of crap in order to find something worth watching over a second time. One look at the filmmaker names below,...
