David Mitchell leads new BBC crime drama Ludwig, and the first details of the show have landed.
David Mitchell has become a familiar face in UK comedy, whether trying to discern who’s telling the truth in Would I Lie To You? or as the uptight Mark Corrigan alongside long time comedy partner Robert Webb in Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain’s Peep Show.
He also took on the role of William Shakespeare in Ben Elton’s sitcom Upstart Crow, and reprised the role for a stage adaptation that opened in 2020 and then again when the play was restaged in 2022
Just as Alan Davies took a left turn from stand-up comedy to drama in David Renwick’s superb Jonathan Creek, Mitchell is now moving into the realm of crime drama to play the title role in six part BBC series Ludwig.
The synopsis reads as follows:
When John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s (David Mitchell) identical twin,...

The fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins by Alec Baldwin last week on the Santa Fe set of Rust wasn’t the first time First Assistant Director David Hills worked on a film where a weapon discharged unexpectedly.
Back in late 2019, a gun went off on the Arkansas set of Freedom’s Path, where Halls was an Ad. The incident caused a member of the Rocket Soul Studios-produced movie’s sound department to jump back from the close-by blast.
“First of all, our condolences go out to everyone affected by the recent tragic event in New Mexico,” said one of the producers of Freedom’s Path to Deadline today.
“I can confirm that Dave Halls was fired from the set of Freedom’s Path in 2019 after a crew member incurred a minor and temporary injury when a gun was unexpectedly discharged,” he added. “Halls was removed from set immediately after the prop gun discharged.

Back in October 2019, before the pandemic, we brought you news about American Civil War movie Freedom’s Path.
The feature, which charts the friendship between a Union soldier and a runaway slave who is helping facilitate the Underground Railroad, stars Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), Rj Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) and Gerran Howell (Catch 22). Post-production has just wrapped.
As it turned out, the project would mark the final stops on the journey of two veteran actors who died while the movie was in post-production: Thomas Jefferson Byrd, a frequent Spike Lee collaborator, and New Orleans native Carol Sutton, both of whom had supporting roles.
Both actors died in sad circumstances. Tony-nominee Byrd was murdered in Atlanta and Sutton died of complications from Covid.
Today, the production has chosen to release two images of the admired actors in their final film, marking the first official stills from the movie.

People today (well always but more so now) really enjoying having lots of choices, be it food (as in buffets and food courts) or in entertainment. And with the latter, we’re talking the multiplex which often presents several types of films, or genres if you want to sound “fancy-schmancy’, from comedies to family flicks, to, well, this week’s unique mix. That’s because this new film is tough to “pin down”, so it may be a multiplex in itself. It’s a musical (in a way), an historical drama, a mystery, a look at faith and religion, and a “coming of age” buddy film. Somehow all those themes and elements come together in the film strangely named The Song Of Names.
It all begins with a flashback to 1951. It’s moments before the big debut of 21-year-old violin virtuoso David Rapoport at a London concert hall. But the concert producer,...

“The Song of Names” is the kind of mediocre Holocaust drama that used to be taken more seriously in the 1990s, partly thanks to the Weinstein brothers and Miramax.
Director Francois Girard (“The Red Violin”) and screenwriter Jeffrey Caine’s adaptation of Norman Lebrecht’s novel is full of empty gestures and banal observations about remembrance and family, most of which flop because of wooden performances and trite dialogue.
Girard’s direction, as well as some star charisma from co-leads Tim Roth and Clive Owen, both give the movie enough emotional resonance to keep afloat its bland narrative — about the 35-year-long search for a missing Jewish violinist prodigy — but there’s no urgency or mystery to the movie, nor any compelling reason to care about its characters beyond a general hope that they’ll ultimately discover something true and/or moving about Judaism, music, and genocide. They do not, though...

It’s been thirty-five years since Dovidl (Jonah Hauer-King) disappeared in 1951. He was a violinist—a genius virtuoso depending on whom you asked (himself included)—primed to make his London debut in a sold out house courtesy of the man that served as his guardian the previous decade-plus (Stanley Townsend’s Gilbert Simmonds). One second he had his prized instrument in-hand while friend/surrogate brother/Gilbert’s son Martin (Gerran Howell) told him to relax and enjoy the moment. Dovidl was finally going to show the world exactly how good he was, but he didn’t show for curtain. He didn’t return home later either. For all Martin and his family knew, Dovidl was dead. And that presumption held a terrible weight considering the same uncertainty loomed over his own family at Treblinka.

Squeezed in between the seemingly endless barrage of cinematic "tent pole" action and super hero franchises and tasteless comedies are some exquisite smaller films that traditionally get overlooked. One film that deserves plenty of accolades and a wide audience is director Francois GIrard's "The Song of Names", a Canadian production that is being released by Sony Classics. I first saw the film at the Sony screening room in New York City in September and was completely absorbed and moved by it from the opening frames. It's always a danger that a critic, in trying champion a film, might reveal too many details and thus compromise the impact of the movie for potential viewers. "The Song of Names" is one such film. Based on the novel by Norman Lebrecht, the script by the estimable Jeffrey Caine is steeped in religious dogma but it is not a film that is primarily about a religion,...

The Song of Names directed by François Girard, is an instant classic about World War II, a Jewish child violin prodigy who disappears on the eve of his debut as a violinist and his “brother” who tracks him down.
We are entranced by the period on the eve of war in London when an Orthodox Jewish man leaves his son with a British family whose father recognizes the great talent of the child. We watch with interest as he fights and bonds with the son of the music publisher who has taken the boy in as his father leaves to return to Poland in the late 1930s.

"Go and find him!" Sony Classics has unveiled a trailer for the film The Song of Names, an emotional drama that spans two continents and half a century. This just premiered at the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals, and will be opening in the Us on Christmas Day at the end of this year. The Song of Names tells the story of a prodigy violinist from Poland, who moves to London to study music at the beginning of WWII. The film splits the time between his youth, and years later when him and his British friend are both adults. Tim Roth stars as the adult Martin, attempting to find his friend Dovidl who disappeared years ago right before playing a major concert in London. Clive Owen also co-stars, with a cast including Jonah Hauer-King, Gerran Howell, Catherine McCormack, Saul Rubinek, Richard Bremmer, Misha Handley, Luke Doyle, and Eddie Izzard.

"If we're not clever about this, no one will get to your brother!" Universal has debuted a full-length official trailer for Sam Mendes' war movie 1917, which looks phenomenal so far. We also posted the behind-the-scenes featurette earlier this week showing how they filmed this movie to play out like one non-stop long take. Set during World War I in the year 1917, the movie takes place over the course of one day, following soldiers on a "seemingly impossible mission" to deliver a message across enemy lines to stop an attack that will kill their own soldiers. With cinematography by Roger Deakins. Starring Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay, joined by a stellar ensemble cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Teresa Mahoney, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Justin Edwards, Gerran Howell, Anson Boon, and Richard McCabe. We’ve got a new trailer here for you to watch for Hulu’s upcoming six-episode limited World War II series Catch-22. The show is based on Joseph Heller’s acclaimed novel and it was directed by George Clooney, who also stars in this film.
I love the tone of this series as it has a very Coen Brothers type vibe to it with the writing and storytelling style. Clooney takes on the role of Scheisskopf and is joined by Kyle Chandler as Colonel Cathcart, Hugh Laurie as Major de Coverley, and Christopher Abbott as Yossarian, a U.S. Air Force bombardier who is angry not only at the enemy who continues trying to kill him, but also at his own army which regularly puts him in harm’s way.

Based on Joseph Heller’s seminal novel of the same name, Catch-22 is the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian (Christopher Abbott).
Yossarian is a Us Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him.
But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service.

Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his military assignments, he’ll be in violation of Catch-22.
Catch-22 is a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule which specifies that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind.

“That’s some catch, that Catch-22.” You said it, Yossarian.
Hulu dropped the trailer for its upcoming adaptation of the classic Joseph Heller novel “Catch-22” Wednesday morning, revealing the titular problem at hand for everyone in the George Clooney-led World War II limited series. The dilemma being, you can only get grounded if you’re crazy — but as soon as you ask to get out of combat duty, you’re no longer crazy, so you have to fly more missions.
According to the doctor that Yossarian (Christopher Abbott) is trying to get help from in the trailer above, it’s “the best catch there is.”

If you’ve followed the news at all today, you know Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen abruptly resigned amid tension in the Trump administration over its failure to stop Central American migrants from crossing the southern border.
President Donald Trump tweeted news of Nielsen’s departure at 6:02 p.m. Et. He wasted no time lining up an acting replacement and immediately announced on Twitter: “Kevin McAleenan, the current U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, will become Acting Secretary for Dhs. I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job!”
Catch-22 executive producer Grant Heslov compared the “absurdity” of what was happening in Washington to events in the Hulu limited series he co-produced with George Clooney.
“When George and I came aboard this, we sort of talked about the idea that there’s never really a bad time to talk about the absurdity of war,” Heslov said...

Variety has been given exclusive access to the first-look image from “The Song of Names,” starring Clive Owen and Tim Roth. HanWay Films is selling the film at the American Film Market.
Jeffrey Caine wrote the screenplay, based on the novel by Norman Lebrecht. The original score is by Howard Shore.
The film, described as an “emotional detective story,” unfolds at the start of World War II. It centers on 9-year-old violin prodigy Dovidl, a recent Polish-Jewish refugee to London. His brother Martin, of the same age, is devoted to him.
Hours before Dovidl’s debut concert performance at the age of 21 he vanishes without a trace. Decades later, a young violinist shows Martin, now in his late 50s, a stylistic flourish that could only have been taught by Dovidl. Dorothy may still be swept up in a tornado, but the land she lands in isn't anything like where Judy Garland landed in 1939's "The Wizard of Oz".
This Oz is much more dark, and this Dorothy (Adria Ajorna) has a lot more grit.
And did you check out her dog? He certainly isn't going to fit in a little wicker basket.
Still, director Tarsem Singh, who filmed the series non-episodically, like a movie, threw in a few Easter eggs for lovers of the original film.
We've already seen Emerald City Season 1 Episode 1, "The Beast Forever" and Emerald City Season 1 Episode 2, "Prison of the Abject", both of which make up the two-hour premiere,...

Legendary performer Vincent D’Onofrio continues to mix TV and film projects, with confirmation that he is to play the Wizard in NBC’s upcoming revitalization of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard Of Oz tales. Having dominated the Marvel show Daredevil on Netflix, as the dastardly Wilson Fisk earlier this year, the actor will step behind the curtain on Emerald City, to be directed by his The Cell filmmaker, Tarsem Singh.
This will be welcome news for the production, which already had a false start in 2014, when the network revoked a straight-to-series order for the show. The script has since been re-worked by executive producer David Schulner (The Event), and the addition of an actor of the stature of Vincent D’Onofrio will instantly generate a great deal of interest in the series when it finally comes to air.
