It’s a Date Night reunion for Steve Carell and Tina Fey in a new adaptation of the 1981 rom-com The Four Seasons. The former co-stars are set to lead the upcoming series, which will see Fey teaming up with longtime collaborators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield to write the comedy.
The film — which was written and directed by Alan Alda and stars Alda, Carol Burnett, and Rita Moreno — follows three couples who vacation together every season but whose worlds are upended when one of them divorces.
Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the series, which is produced by Universal Television and will begin filming later in 2024.

TV’s IP fetish is no coincidence. Recognizable titles and stars can guarantee strong initial tune-in off of modest marketing. But long-term results are lackluster. Just look at the past decade’s worth of revivals. Different from reboots or remakes, risky ventures in their own right, a revival features original castmembers of long-departed series revisiting characters for whom there’s an assumed appetite. Viewers aren’t often as hungry as studio brass would like. The average life span of recent revivals is three seasons, while their originals averaged eight-year runs. So as Paramount+ kicks off October by nixing one revived comedy (iCarly, starring Miranda Cosgrove, above) and attempting to mount another (Frasier with Kelsey Grammer, which premiered Oct. 12), The Hollywood Reporter examines 10 case studies from this revivals wave and where they went right … or horribly wrong.

“Saved by the Bell has been a cultural mainstay for more than 30 years and the new series, led by Tracey Wigfield’s superfan enthusiasm and signature witty humor, seamlessly continued the show’s legacy, all while allowing more audiences to feel seen."
"We’re grateful to Tracey, Franco Bario, our partners at Utv, the beloved cast, and the fans who have continued to champion one of the most iconic shows of all time.”
The series featured a cast of new faces and people from the original series.

Exclusive: School is closing. Saved By The Bell has been canceled by Peacock after two seasons.
Deadline understands that the cast and crew were told yesterday.
It comes only a month after the reboot of the classic NBC comedy won Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards.
The second season of the show dropped in November after the first season reportedly performed well for the streaming service.
In the reimagined series, when California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many underfunded high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the most well-funded schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the privileged Bayside kids (who never have a problem that can’t be solved in 22 minutes) a much-needed dose of reality.

Our age of reboots, revivals, and revisitations is beginning to take its toll. With every new announcement comes the ceremonial rolling of the eyes from critics — unless they happen to be a fan of the IP, in which case the news is greeted with frenzied excitement — and grumblings from fans. Not that either has stopped the slow march toward net zero on creativity.
But while many reboots are content to do nothing more than update the technology for a beloved property and cash in on its name recognition, some are interested in exploring and questioning what made the original iteration so resonant while addressing its earlier failings. The prime example is Pop TV’s dearly beloved “One Day at a Time,” which took the original’s premise (single mom and kids struggling with divorce) and applied it to a Latinx family. Suddenly, an entirely new world of stories opened up,...

The lines between what Jessie Spano and Nomi Malone did in Las Vegas are blurred during Season 2 of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell revival, which pays homage to Elizabeth Berkley Lauren‘s iconic role in the cult classic Showgirls.
Released in 1995 with a rare Nc-17 rating, the erotic drama centered on a street-smart drifter (Lauren) who ventured to Sin City to become a showgirl. Though the movie was widely panned at the time and made nary a dent at the box office, it has since found a second life on basic cable, where it has played ad nauseam since the mid ’90s.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the second season of “Saved by the Bell,” streaming now on Peacock.
In conceptualizing her continuation series of “Saved by the Bell,” Tracey Wigfield knew there were certain things fans of the original series would be waiting to see. On the top of that list was the romantic reunion of Jessie Spano (Elizabeth Berkley Lauren) and A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez). After realizing they still had feelings for each other, they finally kissed again, 30 years in the making, in the second season finale.
“What are we doing here if Slater and Jessie aren’t going to hook up?” the showrunner says with a laugh. “When I watched the ‘90210’ reboot, I had very little personal connection to that show, but I was like, ‘When are the people who kissed 30 years ago going to kiss again?’ There’s just a part...

When Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” reimagining drops its second season on Nov. 24, it will pay tribute to original cast member Dustin Diamond right from the premiere episode.
Diamond played Samuel “Screech” Powers beginning in “Good Morning, Miss Bliss,” the prequel to “Saved by the Bell” in 1988. When the writers of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” opted to have the show’s title character, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), battle against Covid-19 for much of the season, they juxtaposed it with an unexpected silver lining: a dream world that reunited the doctor with many of her fallen loved ones on a beach.
This beach arc, which lasted for more than 10 episodes, found Meredith getting closure with mainstays from her past, including her husband, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and her half-sister, Lexie (Chyler Leigh). But the medical drama was far from alone in tapping into such nostalgia, as more than a half-dozen other shows this television season brought back former leads in guest spots, a move that could shake up the Emmy race in that category.

In trying to re-create the spark of the beloved teen TV series “Saved by the Bell,” Peacock’s revival had to find the right balance of comfort food and innovation, making a show fit for 2021 that didn’t completely leave the ’90s behind. And then there was the casting, which had proved so important for the original sitcom, launching the careers of Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez. It was a tough task, but at the very least, showrunner Tracey Wigfield knew who she wanted to play the omnipresent role of Bayside High School’s most popular girl.

In a very early scene in Peacock’s new series “Girls5eva,” a rising rap star is looking for something he can sample inexpensively. His producer, before directing him to a forgotten hit by a pop quintet, suggests “anything by the Stones: Sharon or Oliver.”
It’s that kind of joke — so briskly delivered, it only registers as the next one arrives — that defines a Tina Fey-produced show. In the eight years since “30 Rock” ended, Fey and current or former creative collaborators have put together a long list of series with a special density. The combination of cerebral wordplay and exuberant strangeness in these programs is recognizable from 50 paces, and always welcome, even when the project doesn’t totally click.

Peacock's Saved by the Bell has truly become the sequel series that could - the revival has scored a second season renewal! The streamer announced the news on Jan. 19, revealing that 10 new episodes have been ordered for the next installment.

Time in: School will be back in session in Bayside High for 10 more episodes, as Peacock has renewed “Saved by the Bell” for a second season.
“I’m thrilled that ‘Saved by the Bell’ has been renewed. I’ve been blown away by all the love for the show and can’t wait to go back and make more episodes,” said showrunner Tracey Wigfield. “Hopefully we stay on Peacock for many more seasons, and then in 30 years, somebody does a reboot of our reboot and invents the threeboot.”
Wigfield’s reimagining of the beloved 1980s and 1990s sitcom sees California governor Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) trying to save face after closing too many underfunded high schools but proposing that the state send affected students to the most well-funded schools instead. This, naturally, means Bayside gets an influx of new students, which forces the privileged Palisades kids to finally get a reality check.
