Mexican Rigoberto Pérezcano’s “Lovers Fare Goodbye,” a poignant, exquisitely shot tale of star-crossed young love dominated prizes at Primer Corte, Ventana Sur’s key arthouse pic competition. The prize and dozens of others were announced Friday at Latin America’s most important film-tv mart-meet.
Organizers confirmed a total Ventana Sur attendance of 4,300 delegates, some 30% up on just a year ago.
Lensed in black-and-white and set in the Oaxaca valley, “Lovers” was always the frontrunner Primer Corte, which, with parallel section Copia Final, focuses much of the attention of buyers at Ventana Sur.
“Lovers” six prizes looks like a historical record. So do the total 88 industry awards at 12 of 14 sections – and Variety might be missing some – dolled out at Ventana Sur’s kudos ceremony. That serves testament to just how much the market has grown from 2009 when it launched at Buenos Aires’ former Harrods building with, of sections, just Primer...

Carlos Reygadas is currently in production on his sixth feature film, Estela de sombra. We suspect that filming in taking place in his native Mexico. We had reported that Reygadas had received some coin and could possibly film portions of his next film in Poland. We conclude that the titled next project Wake of Umbra and Estela de sombra are one of the same – when translated it means “trail of shadow.”

We learned that Cannes and Venice winning filmmaker Michel Franco was possibly circling the country of Poland for his next project. Well, the filmmaker has indeed embarked on a new project but it isn’t in Eastern Europe but Brooklyn instead. Physically present for several in-person promotional activities for Sundown back in January and possibly being hands on as an executive producer for Jonah Feingold’s current sophomore feature in production (we interviewed the filmmaker for Dating and New York), the NYC staycation equates to a eighth feature film with some major talents in: Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard. There is no title yet for the under-the-radar project which could be produced by Eréndira Núñez Larios and Cristina Velasco, but we know that Chastain would hav signed up recently – she made the mention when she was doing the rounds for all the award galas related to The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Mexico’s Michel Franco is back in Venice after his triumphant Silver Lion win last year for his dystopian thriller “New Order.” His new film “Sundown” is in competition at the Lido where it world premieres on Sunday. Variety spoke to the director and the film’s star Tim Roth.
While “New Order” used thousands of extras and was shot on a larger, more ambitious scale than any of Franco’s previous films, “Sundown” is a return to a more intimate, personal drama with Franco’s long-time collaborator and friend Roth leading the cast.
In it, Roth plays a wealthy man going through an existential crisis while vacationing in Acapulco with his family. Not much more can be said of the plot without revealing its twists.
This is the second time Roth stars in a Franco-directed film. Their relationship sparked nearly 10 years ago when Roth, as Cannes’ 2012 Un Certain Regard jury president,...

Neon has acquired North American rights to Michel Franco’s dystopian social thriller “New Order.” The movie was this year’s winner of the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
Set in a near-future Mexico City while protests rage, “New Order” focuses on a high society family preparing for a wedding when a former employee seeking emergency medical funds intrudes on the festivities. But soon the party is unable to keep the reckoning at bay, followed by a swift disintegration of law and order defined first by class lines.
“New Order” is written, produced and directed by Franco, who conceived the project six years ago. The cast includes Naian González Norvind, Darío Yazbek Bernal, Lisa Owen, Fernando Cuautle and Mónica Del Carmen.
“In making ‘New Order,’ I had to think about movies in a whole new way,” Franco said. “It’s not only my largest scale film,...

Matt Dillon is at Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival this week for the world premiere of The Great Fellove, his second feature as a director after a 17-year gap since his debut City Of Ghosts. His new film is a documentary that taps into the actor’s passion for Cuban music, telling the story of Francisco Fellove, a singer and songwriter known for his scat singing.
The film chronicles how Dillon and his friend Joey Altruda travelled to Mexico City in the late 90s to meet Fellove, who had long retreated from the limelight, and to record a final album with him (he passed away in 2013). Dillon unearthed that footage after it has spent many years on the shelf, and decided to flesh it out into a feature film, travelling to Cuba and Mexico, recording interviews with many of Fellove’s contemporaries to understand how much he influenced their musical scene.
