With their new horror thriller Guess Who, Tubi may finally have come up with a fairly original idea for one of their films. As far as I can tell, it’s the first film to use mummering as a major plot point. No, not mummies, mummering. What is mummering? Mummering is a Christmas-time house-visiting tradition practised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ireland, and the City of Philadelphia. It adds a touch of Halloween to the season as people would dress in disguise and go door to door. If they were invited in, they’d give some kind of performance while their hosts tried to guess who they were.
Michael and Kaitlyn, his fiancée, are driving out to meet his family when they have to stop for gas.

I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."
Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.
"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

We're only a day away from the two-episode premiere of Slasher: Ripper on Shudder and AMC+, and not only do we have an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead readers, but director Adam MacDonald (Pyewacket) provided us with some behind-the-scenes details!
Synopsis: "Slasher: Ripper takes the franchise back in time to the late 19th century and follows Basil Garvey (McCormack), a charismatic tycoon whose success is only rivaled by his ruthlessness, as he oversees a city on the cusp of a new century, and a social upheaval that will see its streets run red with blood. There’s a killer stalking the mean streets, but instead of targeting the poor and downtrodden like Jack the Ripper, The Widow is meting out justice against the rich and powerful. The only person standing in the way of this killer is the newly promoted detective, Kenneth Rijkers, whose ironclad belief in justice may...

While the 1980 slasher cult classic Terror Train (watch it Here) takes place on New Year’s Eve, the remake that was released through the Tubi streaming service near the end of October moved the setting to Halloween – which made sense, since the slashing takes place at a costume party and such things happen more often at Halloween than on New Year’s Eve. In 1980, Canada delivered one of the most mind boggling slasher films of all time. Terror Train, directed by Roger Spottiswoode, threw Halloween, Friday the 13th, Animal House, Runaway Train and stage magic into a body bag, shook it up and dumped out a glorious Frankenstein monstrosity featuring Jamie Lee Curtis and David Copperfield. Forty-two years later, this classic oddity gets a modern yet mostly faithful retelling courtesy director Philippe Gagnon.
The premise is exactly the same: a well-to-do fraternity holds a Halloween bash on a privately chartered train only to have their numbers picked off one-by-one. There’s a mysterious magician, played by Tom Rozon in the finest Gary Numan impersonation ever, and an angry killer bent on revenge for the misdeeds of said fraternity. Costumes exchange and body counts rise as both guests and train employees realize someone is out to get them. The main difference is a twist...

Released in 1980 the original Terror Train was one of the many slashers to be released in the wake of Friday the 13th and Halloween. Benefiting from the presence of that film’s star, Jamie Lee Curtis it did well at the box office and has built a following over the years. There was even an attempt to remake it in the early 2000s, but that ended up morphing into Train, a film that sucked even by torture porn standards.
Since the original was a favourite of mine, I was initially interested when I heard it had been remade and was scheduled for an October release. However, when I heard Tubi was involved, a lot of that interest faded. As...

Remakes like Philippe Gagnon's "Terror Train" will always face comparison complaints based on their existence, which is why I try my best in reviews to treat them as standalone. Critique the movie you're given — like this bargain bin, zero momentum slasher. "Terror Train" is the latest in a string of Tubi originals taking the Syfy route of The Asylum-level productions, filled with shoddy effects and worse performances. "Terror Train" is a deadly whodunit without any terror, proving itself inadequate before tickets are punched and conductors discover passenger corpses.
Writers Ian Carpenter and Aaron Martin take the "frat hazing gone wrong" route when a pledge at [insert generic Greek letters] kisses a corpse (as a prank) and instantly goes insane. Alana (Robyn Alomar) is the sorority sister who lured the eventual psych asylum patient into a bedroom with promises of sex, now stuck with the guilt. Her boyfriend Mo (Corteon Moore) and his best...

Tubi announced today at Content Canada that it will expand upon its collaboration with Incendo on an upcoming slate of projects that includes a new film adaptation of Hans Holzer’s The Amityville Curse, which was published in 1981. That book ended up serving as the basis for official franchise movie The Amityville Curse, which was released in 1990.
The new adaptation of Hans Holzer’s novel will be a modern take on the ever popular franchise with a fictionalized story that remains true to the novel. Further ensuring an authentic approach, Incendo has secured the underlying rights to Hans Holzer’s titular original novel from the estate. Fox’s Tubi is adding to its horror library after picking up two Canadian genre pics — Dennis Heaton’s adaptation of Hans Holzer’s The Amityville Curse novel and Marry F*** Kill from writers Ian Carpenter and Aaron Martin — at the Toronto Film Festival.
Indie production banner Incendo will shoot both productions later this year for Tubi in the U.S. market where it faces stepped-up competition in the free, ad-supported online space against Paramount’s Pluto TV, Amazon’s Freevee and the Roku Channel.
The latest genre pic deals for the Fox-owned streaming platform were unveiled on Tuesday at TIFF as part of its informal film market. Marry F*** Kill sees five estranged college friends reunite for their friend’s funeral after her suicide, only to see an innocent game of “Marry, Fuck, Kill” turn into something far more sinister.

The show features rescued pups from around the country as they “strut their fluff” and compete for a series of titles, including best in underbite, best in snoring, best in belly rubs and more. For each winning dog in the seven categories, a 10,000 donation will be made by Petco Love to a local animal welfare organization. Each category winner will compete for the title of best in rescue, which will culminate in a 100,000 donation.
“During these challenging times, animals have never had such an important impact on our wellbeing,” said “American Rescue Dog Show” creator and EP Michael Levitt. “Now more than ever, it’s time to give rescue dogs their moment in the spotlight. The cuteness overload on this...

AMC Networks has unveiled a slew of renewals across its streaming services.
Kin, Bloodlands, My Life Is Murder, Creepshow and Slasher have all been picked up for additional seasons.
Slasher, which airs on Shudder, has also set Will & Grace’s Eric McCormack as lead on its latest installment, Slasher: Ripper.
The series, which has been renewed for its fifth season, is heading back in time to the late 19th century — there’s a killer stalking the mean streets, but instead of targeting the poor and downtrodden like Jack the Ripper, The Widow is meting out justice against the rich and powerful. The only person standing in the way of this killer is the newly promoted detective, Kenneth Rijkers, whose ironclad belief in justice may wind up being yet another victim.
