Despite its smattering of shortcomings, “A Castle For Christmas” is gently disarming, heartening, holiday-themed escapism that’s as satisfying as a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s night. Director Mary Lambert’s romcom is centered on a divorcée who, after a public meltdown, buys a castle in Scotland, meets a dreamy duke and regains her creative vitality. Trading cloying for cute, treacly for tolerable, and caustic for comforting, its sincere, aspirational sentiments about it never being too late to write your own second chapter feel genuinely meaningful, making up for its struggles to pay off unrequited setups.

Exclusive: Lionsgate is closing two deals for book adaptations that will be produced by Pitch Perfect producers Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman through their Brownstone Productions banner. They’ve just closed a deal to acquire a pitch for hot scribe Erica Oyama to write a comedy based on Babe Walker’s bestseller White Girl Problems, a comic pseudo-memoir by a pampered gal out to show that even rich people deserve sympathy too. For example: She hates her horse and all the wealthy men she dates, and she has a shopping addiction that caused her once to spend $246,000 at Barneys in an afternoon. Authors Tanner Cohen, David Oliver Cohen and Lara Schoenhals wrote the book under the alias Babe Walker. Lionsgate is separately acquiring for Brownstone Heist Society, the Ally Carter bestseller about a woman who has been part of a larcenous family and tries to go straight. That ends when...

Today sees the release of "The Hunger Games," the much anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult novel series about a future in which children are forced to compete in a fight to the death for the entertainment of the upper class, and to help their district fight off starvation. The books have been bestsellers, and Lionsgate have pegged the film to be their own answer to another hugely popular teen-skewing franchise, the vampire romance "Twilight." And it looks as if the gamble has paid off, with most prognosticators pegging the film to open well over $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.
But all things come to an end, and while "The Hunger Games" is only just hitting theaters, sequel "Catching Fire" is already set for release in November 2013, with final "Mockingjay" presumably following another eighteen months or so after that. And when you figure in that "Harry Potter...

Warner Bros. Pictures have announced that Drew Barrymore will be producing and possibly directing Heist Society; an adaptation of Ally Carter’s young-adult novel of the same name, the first in a proposed series of books focusing on the double life of a teenage con artist. The franchise opener will be scripted by past collaborator Shauna Cross, who wrote Barrymore’s 2009 debut Whip It.
Barrymore returns to the director’s chair a mere 2 years after the release of her roller derby debut, which didn’t exactly set the film world on fire – critically average reviews and financially disappointing flick. Yet with Heist Society, Barrymore has landed on a possible goldmine here with the film appealing to a mass teen audience, this could be, dare I say it, the next Twilight, only with more van Gogh than vampires.

Excellent news for fans of Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip It as THR are reporting that following her next film, the New York based rom-com How to be Single, she will reunite with writer Shauna Cross who is adapting the novel Heist Society by Ally Carter.
The book tells the story of Katrina Bishop who leaves her family and their criminal lifestyle behind only to be pulled back in when her father is named as the cheif suspect in the heist of dangerous mobster’s priceless art collection. She assembles a team to steal back the paintings and save her father.
THR have the main character in her early 20s so perhaps Whip It star Ellen Page will be getting a call?

Well, it definitely looks like Drew Barrymore is quite serious about her future projects. Apparently, she’s now busy with another novel adaptation, Ally Carter‘s Heist Society for Warner Bros.
Barrymore is also attached to produce the project that is already being described as young adult thriller together with Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan.

According to THR, Warner Bros. is aging the characters a notch into their early 20s.

Chris Hemsworth will be back for Thor 2, which is now scheduled for 2013 (it would not make the list of the 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2013, given Marvel's now spotty track record of one awesome film and three slightly better than mediocre outings). The unfortunate news is that Kenneth Branaugh will not be returning to direct, a "mutual and amicable" decision. That's too bad; I thought he handled Thor rather well, given what he had to work with. Hey! Did you watch "Camelot" on Starz? No, of course you didn't. You were too preoccupied with "Game of Thrones." I never saw "Camelot" myself, but given the period elements, and the fact it was on Starz, I will take a wild guess that Eva Green often found herself without clothes (a Google search quickly confirms). Anyway, "Camelot" will not be coming back. Stars has declined to pick up the series for a second season.

We reported back in late October that Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace would be acting in a boxing biopic, which is set to star her ex-husband, Ola Rapace. Now, THR says that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke is taking the reigns of the movie, and shooting will begin in Sweden this autumn. The film tells the story of Bo “Bosse” Hogberg and his wife, the cabaret singer Anita Lindblom. The movie currently doesn’t have a title, but we know that it will follow his time as a boxer in the 60s and 70s, and the relationship that the two had as a couple.
Hardwicke directing is something that we didn’t expect, as she’s been handling American studio fare as of late. The film sounds like it’s a little more daring than her last two efforts, Twilight and Little Red Riding Hood, if only because...

Marvel and Disney have already decided Thor 2 will hit theaters on July 26, 2013, the same summer the studio will release Iron Man 3 (5/3/13) as the Avengers films continue to steamroll along. Chris Hemsworth is also set to return as the title character, but Thor helmer Kenneth Branagh will not be returning as director, though he will likely be involved in some producing capacity. So I guess we'll be seeing Thor 2 director shortlists very soon. [Deadline]
Despite the fact filming is already underway, it is now being reported that Matthew Fox ("Lost") and Ed Harris will not be starring in the zombie apocalypse feature World War Z. Fox is said to have departed...

Barbara Chai The scene at the Disney Dinner
As final events surrounding BookExpo America came to a close yesterday, I reflected on the whirlwind of activity of the past week – some of it wearying, some of it winning.
The moment I may remember most is when Dave Barry called me an “ignorant slut.”
Yup, he used the same phrase made famous in the “Saturday Night Live” skits of the 1970s. And the same s-word that got MSNBC host Ed Schultz in trouble earlier this week.

Satoshi Kon, the Japanese animator responsible for Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress passed away yesterday at the too-young-age of 47. He died of cancer. I'm not familiar with Kon's work, but the estimable Twig -- who reviewed Perfect Blue -- writes that he was "a true visionary in every possible sense of the word," and that "Millennium Actress is, without a doubt, one of the best movies ever made, in any format, in any country, ever." On behalf of Twig, the man's family, friends, and fans, we're sincerely sorry about his passing.

I guess I'll have to amend my earlier statement. A few days ago, I said, "when you're out of ideas, make a sequel. When you're out of sequels, remake something. When you're out of remakes, reboot something. " Now we can change that ending to "when you're out of reboots, make a teen version of it."
Warner Brothers has apparently optioned the teen-targeted novel "The Heist Society" by Ally Carter (which hasn't even been released yet), which is being described as a sort of Thomas Crown Affair for teens. Super. Slashfilm describes it as being about "a young woman named Katarina Bishop who hails from an extended family of cat burglars and master thieves. The girl leaves her illicit life behind, but when her father is the prime suspect behind a mobster's missing art collection, she assembles a crew to track down the art and steal it back."
