Moloch opens in 1991 as a young girl feeding a mouse is frightened by the sounds of what sounds like an extremely violent attack in the room above her. Soon blood is raining from between the floorboards and pouring down the walls onto the terrified girl.
Thirty years later, Betriek is now grown up and has a daughter of her own, Hanna (Noor van der Velden). It was Betriek’s grandmother that we heard being killed in the prologue. Her father Roelof was traumatized by her death and still drunkenly waits for the killer to return. Her mother suffers from an unknown illness that subjects her to what seems to be seizures. Add in the death by heart attack of Hanna’s father and...

The camera glides up the stairwell of an old home at the edge of the bog, there are several portraits on the wall of trios of generations of just the women, grouped into trios: Grandmother, mother, daughter. A low rumble knocks one of them down, cracking the glass. This is a succinct visual mission statement for Nico van den Brink’s debut feature; a balanced and dramatic family ghost story, Moloch. It is easy enough to overlook during the sturm und drang of its opening prologue, where a young girl experiences the audible death of her grandmother, perhaps from a seizure or a stroke, while hiding in the closet one floor below. Flash forward 30 years later, and young Betriek has grown up and has...

Bog bodies have been being unearthed for centuries now, and have always proven to be objects of special fascination. Often bound, sometimes exotically garbed, they have generally been stabbed or garrotted before being placed in bogs in what is widely interpreted as an act of sacrifice. In 1897, the body of a teenage girl who had died around 1,000 years previously was found in the Stijfveen peat bog near the village of Yde in the Netherlands, exciting all sorts of local speculation. Nico van den Brink’s film pays clear homage to this discovery as it tells the story of a remarkably similar body found in the same area in the present day, and hints at a tradition passed down across centuries.
Sallie Harmsen plays Betriek, a young, widowed mother living on the edge of that peat bog, where her family has resided for centuries. She’s carrying deep trauma from the loss.

“Face Off” helmer John Woo will receive a Career Achievement Award during Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, about to celebrate its 26th edition. The Hong Kong filmmaker is currently working on “Silent Night,” starring Joel Kinnaman and Kid Cudi.
“I defy anyone to watch ‘Bullet in the Head,’ ‘Hard Boiled’ or ‘The Killer’ and not walk away wanting to break down the shots and make a movie. His use of camera movement, close-ups, the ways he would block and choreograph, it’s astonishing to look at,” Fantasia’s artistic director Mitch Davis told Variety, noting the “unexpected poetry” of Woo’s work.
“They are such unconventionally soulful films. I wish we could somehow unleash a flock of doves in the cinema when he steps onto the stage. Backlit.”

Shorts have arguably suffered the most in the wake of the mass cinema closures over the last year. Almost always relegated to the dim light of a laptop screen anyway, without our live, in-person, in-cinema film festivals, shorts haven’t been seen big and loud in much too long, and when they have been, have only done so in punishingly small numbers.
But with FrightFest’s return, there’s hope, as the fest and its programmers show no sign of taking a step back with its Short Film Showcases, packing three feature-length slots full of the good stuff. The best of which we’ve cobbled together and outlined below:
David J. Ellison’s Familiar is, as it’s title might suggest, nothing sensationally new. But while it ticks a lot of the classic gothic horror boxes, it’s Ellison’s terrific appetite for atmosphere that makes it a must, building...

James Wan is set to produce a new horror thriller for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. called Sweet Tooth. The movie is based on a Dutch short horror film of the same name and it will be directed by Dutch filmmaker Nico van den Brink, who also wrote and directed the short.
The story centers on a woman "who comes home to her large apartment tenement. Watching the news, she discovers that her neighbors — a mother and her two kids — have been killed, but then enters creep-zone territory when she begins to hear the laughter and running of the munchkins."
That sounds like it could be a fun and creepy horror flick! The short premiered in July at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, but it has yet to be released online for people to watch.

(The still above is from iMedium, one of the best shorts in the Small Gauge Trauma block.) It's no secret that we adore Fantasia here at ScreenAnarchy. In addition to the great live events, features, and raucous Q&As, the festival always programs great short films, and the 2017 edition was no different. (Check out the Born of Woman program review here and the International Science Fiction Short Showcase here.) Small Gauge Trauma is a favorite annual viewing for me, and I saw some incredible films this year in this block. Sweet Tooth (dir.
