Accepting nothing short of perfection from her staff, Leva runs a tight ship, but her once-close-knit team faces a multitude of obstacles as they try to keep their jobs while maintaining their friendships and relationships. When rumors, cheating allegations and ghosts of past back-alley debaucheries haunt the staff,...

The 25th annual gala amFAR Cannes charity event, Cinema Against AIDS, took place even in the shadow of Harvey Weinstein’s downfall — the man who ruled over this event for almost all of the past quarter century. Not this time, though. And though the star quotient was lower than usual, his presence wasn’t missed in any major way. Pierce Brosnan, bringing in over $1 million for his Bob Dylan painting, and perennial Chris Tucker and Nicole Scherzinger were among the few celebrities onstage. Paris Hilton held forth a couple of times, and there was Ellie Goulding as well as Corey Hawkins present, among others.
But mainly the standard format of the event, with an auction for pricey and extravagant items and a fashion show, were the highlights, mixed in with terrific performances from Sting and Shaggy doing a three-song set, the legendary Grace Jones doing exactly what you would expect,...

Jem Cohen‘s (Museum Hours, Counting) new documentary, World Without End (No Reported Incidents), will be released in the U.S. by Grasshopper Film early next year. From the press release:
Quite close to London, but for many, a million miles away, Southend-on-Sea is a town along the Thames estuary. Jem Cohen’s new documentary, World Without End (No Reported Incidents), is a portrait of this place – everyday streets, everyday birds, unflagging tides, mud, and sky. But it is also about humanity and history, about prize-winning Indian curries, an encyclopedic universe of hats, and a nearly lost world of proto-punk music.

There was a time in modern music when the role of the artist changed from being the custodian of cultural knowledge to something more of an autobiographer. We might choose that moment in the late sixties when Lou Reed abandoned the writing of pop ditties about boys and girls, to focus on his own, more personal interests, like boys and girls and heroin.
In other art forms this sea change was happening -- in comedy, where once jokes were shared, un-authored, between performers in Vegas, the Catskills, and New York City clubs, Lenny Bruce made comedy suddenly personal -- talking about race, politics, cops, censorship, and heroin. It is tempting to suggest that in painting this shift had happened decades earlier, particularly in that sub-category of painting called "abstraction." Once artists like Kandinsky, Rodchenko, Dove, and O’Keefe had looked for...

The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World Museum of Modern Art, NYC December 14, 2014-April 5, 2015
Between 1942 and 1963 Dorothy Canning Miller was the curator of the influential Americans shows at the Museum of Modern Art. Beginning with Americans 1942: 18 Artists From 9 States and ending with Americans 1963, Miller presented the work of artists such as Hyman Bloom, Robert Motherwell, Jay DeFeo, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Lee Bontecou, and Frank Stella -- artists who would ultimately be the defining contributors to the mid-century American art historical canon. After a gap of nearly a half-century, MoMA once again is reviving this tradition with Laura Hoptman’s The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemoporal World, an exhibition of seventeen painters representing current trends in painting.
In contrast to the U.S-centric exhibitions of the past, Forever Now emphasizes the concept of "a-temporality," a phenomenon of culture defined by the science fiction/cultural theorist William Gibson,...

Oscar Murillo, the 28-year-old market darling who has already sold pieces of his art for nearly a half-million dollars, is still making student work. It looks like a deft combination of Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Joe Bradley, whom I'm told he worked for and whose ideas he appears to have hugely appropriated. He’s not talentless: While I don't much care for Murillo's almost-monochrome drop-cloth abstraction or his funky formal paintings with words in them, he has a nice sense of warm colors, a handsome touch, and full-blown ambition. Otherwise, though, his work looks exactly like a lot of abstraction that is snapped up by speculator-collectors lately for ever-rising prices.Notwithstanding his massive market success, Murillo is posing a problem for art-world types. Last week in Berlin, I visited a huge building housing an enormous collection of contemporary art. Afterwards, I was taken to the collector's nearby home to say hello.

★★★★☆ Now celebrating its 60th anniversary, director William Wyler's Roman Holiday (1953) - the romantic comedy starring the elfin Audrey Hepburn and debonair Gregory Peck - perfectly captures an innocent era sadly long forgotten. Anne (Hepburn, in the role that first brought her into the public eye), the princess of an obscure European country, is undertaking a highly publicised tour of the capitals of Europe. Frustrated by the strict protocol ruling her life Anne gives her courtiers the slip one night whilst in Rome. Hiding her identity she embarks on a tour of the city where she soon meets American journalist Joe Bradley (Peck).
Realising who Anne is, but saying nothing of his true intentions, Joe accompanies her around Rome in the hope that he can land an exclusive interview. William Wyler had a knack for spinning dramatic tension around strong female roles, as when he directed Greer Garson in Mrs. Miniver...

Los Angeles — This week's "Jack the Giant Slayer," a 3-D retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk legend, contains all the elements of the classic tale: farm boy, beans, giants, etc. But along for the ride is a new character, Princess Isabelle, played by Eleanor Tomlinson.
At the film's start, Isabelle has sneaked away in disguise from her overprotective father, the king, to see what the real world is like. Eventually she ends up finding more of an adventure than she'd bargained for when she's sent skyward into the clutches of some fierce, bloodthirsty giants. Still, she rolls with whatever comes her way and learns not just to survive but thrive – and even find time to fall in love.
Here's a look at five other movies featuring strong princesses:
_"Roman Holiday" (1953): Truly a classic in the princess-in-disguise genre, this romantic comedy charmer stars a young, radiant Audrey Hepburn in her only Oscar-winning role.

BroadwayWorld.com has learned details about a recent reading of the Guthrie Theatre's upcoming production of Roman Holiday in Minneapolis. Starring in the reading, directed by John Miller-Stephany were Laura Osnes as Princess Ann and John Behlmann as Joe Bradley. They rest of the reading cast featured many of the area's top local talent. We're told that the reading went quite well, and that the song choices, which of course include some of Porter's biggest hits like Easy to Love, Begin the Beguine, Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye and Riding High also included many rarely heard gems that 'fit perfectly into the story.' Also in attendance for the staged reading were book writer Paul Blake and other members of the creative team.

Atlanta band partners with VitaminWater for a series of curated shows throughout the country.

Atlanta's skuzzy and fuzzy Black Lips may not be the first band you'd think of when it comes to corporate tie-ins — since most big brands tend to frown on stuff like onstage urination — and yet here they are, talking about joining forces with VitaminWater for a nationwide series of free concerts called "Uncapped."
And to frontman Jared Swilley, it sort of makes perfect sense.
"[It's] a series of concerts that we've curated across the country ... giving bands a chance to get out there and make some money and get some people to hear them," he told MTV News. "[In] Chicago, we've got the Mannequin Men; in Minneapolis, we've got Birthday Suits, and we've played with them a lot of times over the years.

John Hooper selects 10 of his favourite Rome-based films from Hepburn in Roman Holiday to Fellini's La Dolce Vita
• As featured in our Rome city guide
Roman Holiday, William Wyler, 1953
Insulated from the commotion of Roman life, Via Margutta is a cobbled street near the Spanish Steps, draped in ivy and lined nowadays with art galleries, restaurants and boutiques. It was home to Federico Fellini and Truman Capote. And at number 51, Crown Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) began her fleeting love affair with an American foreign correspondent, Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck) in the enchanting, if improbable, comedy that shot Hepburn to fame and forever welded Vespas to Rome in the popular imagination. "You have my permission to withdraw..." slurs Hepburn, unaware she has previously been sedated, as she lets her skirt slip to the floor. "Why, thank you very much," replies the gentlemanly Peck and leaves her to sleep alone. It...

Mark Ronson wanted to make an album with Black Lips because they both like "spooky, eerie and ghostly" sounds. The producer, who has recently worked with Duran Duran and Boy George, as well as releasing his third solo album last year, agreed to work with the garage rock band because they have a shared interest in vintage production.
Mark explained, "They certainly know all their garage and 60s rock stuff better than I do, but I love all that stuff, so there is like a shared aesthetic, so we're both like we want it to sound spooky and warbly and eerie and ghostly."
The band wanted to record with Mark after hearing his production on Amy Winehouse's 2006 album "Back to Black", but at first he was a little wary because they had never worked with a producer on their previous five albums.
He added, "I'm always nervous the first...

Apparently, we trust in no one. I'm itching to tie all this business up, because I can't take the creepiness anymore. The only relationships we can rely on are those between the Atlas MacDowell cronies and Spangler. They're also the only ones whose motives aren't suspect: they are keeping a secret and will stop at nothing to keep Will Travers from discovering it. Otherwise, nothing seems to be certain, especially after this episode. Can Will really trust an artist who doesn't live in a shoebox who talks to her sister on the phone in the bathroom? Maggie apparently can't trust her ex to be a good father, which Kale warned her about. The team isn't legally allowed to trust Tanya since she lost her clearance. And in the spirit of equality, the homosexual relationship is just as trust fucked. First we suspected Kale of working against Will but now we...

Will. Will, Will, Will. You know why he works at Api? Because if he worked in ops, he'd be dead in 20 minutes. Last week, ya'll commented about the boneheadedness of his character and this week, well, yeah, we got more of the same. However, he does seem to get the ladies wet with a tomato, wine, and a big gun. Apparently, that and bugs in one's apartment leads to dirty sex with a stranger (and then cuddling the next night, which doesn't interest me so much). Will took his wine, tomato, and big gun across the alley to artist Andi's (although, we learn like every other "artist" in New York, she's actually an office worker. She probably also moonlights as a bartender when she can). He walks into her apartment, makes a crappy sandwich and some small talk, then proceeds to stare out her window into his own apartment. She...
