The State of the Race
“Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” in the fantasy production design category at the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, Oscar-nominated “Oppenheimer” took period honors over Oscar-nominated “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon,” along with “Asteroid City” and “Maestro.”

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

2024 Oscars Best Production Design overview: Can any of the other 3 nominees surpass ‘Barbenheimer’?
A critically important craft to filmmaking is production design. The production designer is responsible for the look of a film, which includes finding locations, designing and building sets, and running the art department. Although the name of this category has changed over the past nine-and-a-half decades, the general principle is the same, with this Oscar going both to a film’s production designer(s) and its set decorator(s).
This category doesn’t usually match the ultimate Best Picture winner; the last time that happened was in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro‘s “The Shape of Water,” and before that was Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2003. One of this year’s nominees didn’t even receive a Best Picture nomination.

Christopher Nolan is a big fan of movies that are much more smaller-scale dramas like “Aftersun” (“a beautiful film”) and “Past Lives” (“subtle in a beautiful sort of way”) compared to his own output, he recently told Time magazine, but he’s probably never going to make them. Nolan got his start with indie productions like “Memento,” but he’s now famous for assembling blockbuster productions with huge sets and pricey budgets. He’s likely never going back to a more subtle production style.
“I’m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is,” Nolan told the publication about sticking with big productions. “I know that there are so many filmmakers out there in the world who would give their eye teeth to have the resources I put together, and I feel I have the responsibility to use them...

One of Christopher Nolan's strengths as a director is just how efficient he is. Whereas some directors are famous for their long, chaotic production schedules, Nolan's films tend to be finished within budget and ahead of schedule. It's part of how he somehow managed to release "Batman Begins" and "The Prestige" within a year of each other, and also how he managed to make the star-studded, three-hour epic "Oppenheimer" under a budget of $100 million. For context, the far less visually impressive "The Flash" cost $300 million.
Considering how star-studded "Oppenheimer" is, and how over-inflated so many other movie budgets have been in recent years, its relatively low budget feels like a miracle. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, however, lead actor Cillian Murphy talked about how miracles had nothing to do with it:
"I think every single crew member, every single actor wants to be on a Chris Nolan set [...] like Robert [Downey Jr.] was saying,...

Production designer Ruth De Jong and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick have worked on projects helmed by incredible filmmakers. De Jong earned an Emmy nomination for David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return and worked as the production designer on Jordan Peele’s Us and Nope. Mirojnick, meanwhile, earned an Emmy for Behind the Candelabra — one of her six collaborations with Steven Soderbergh — and designed costumes for Steven Spielberg (Always), Richard Attenborough (Chaplin), Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days), Oliver Stone (Wall Street) and Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Starship Troopers).
So the pair know a thing or two about what makes a great director. But it’s Oppenheimer writer-director Christopher Nolan whom De Jong and Mirojnick call the ultimate filmmaker.
“There is no other director like him, and I’ve worked with some of the best,” says Mirojnick. “His method of collaboration is very generous, and he shares a massive amount by comparison to anyone else.

Exclusive: When location scouting for Oppenheimer, production designer Ruth De Jong was tasked with finding a location to recreate Los Alamos. Although the actual town of Los Alamos was too modernized to use for the period piece, De Jong and her team spent some time there for research. “I began laying out the expanse of the town with our set designer Jim Hewitt,” she says. “We took these drawings, with plans and elevations, and made foam core architectural models in a quarter-inch scale.”
De Jong and her team landed on Ghost Ranch, which is along the same mountain range as the existing Los Alamos. “We had this epic town that we wanted to do,” she says, “but the U.S. government had $2 million and a few years and I had nowhere near that.” Neither De Jong nor director Christopher Nolan wanted to use CGI for extensions on the town, so De...

"Mr. President, I feel I have blood on my hands," said J. Robert Oppenheimer to President Harry Truman in 1945 during a fateful meeting at the Oval Office, according to a description of their encounter in "American Prometheus." Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" stages this event to dramatic effect, with Truman (Gary Oldman) calling the theoretical physicist a "crybaby" after the latter addresses the ethical quandaries of dropping the world's first atomic weapon. This moment is memorable; it underlines the government's eagerness to literally weaponize nuclear weapons development projects while also zooming in on Oppenheimer's accumulating guilt and despair.

Yes, Christopher Nolan wants you to buy the Blu-ray of “Oppenheimer.”
But the event at the Academy’s Linwood G. Dunn Theatre Monday night promoting the November 21 home video launch of the $951 million global hit — which no one in Hollywood predicted — also screened “The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer,” a Blu-ray special feature, and added a stellar crafts panel for the press, guild, and Academy voters on hand.
Universal knows that craft nominations could add up for “Oppenheimer,” as they have for other Nolan movies like “Dunkirk” and “Inception,” and that these craft maestros would showcase their expertise and star power. At the reception afterwards, Nolan told IndieWire that he was surprised at how strong the making-of movie was, because he actively avoided having the crew on the set, finding them an unwelcome distraction.

Never one to skirt the truth, visionary director Christopher Nolan has always paid close attention to getting the real story down on 70mm film, even down to the smallest detail. "The Dark Knight" was so grounded in reality that Batman seemed more like an actual historical figure than a traumatized superhero. With "Oppenheimer," Nolan and his team had one of the most exhaustive biographies ever written at their disposal, "American Prometheus," written by authors Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. That deep dive into the definitive account of the creation of the atomic bomb and its aftermath even led to more discoveries that the historians missed the first time around.

There was a contentious moment in one of the first-round matches at the Atp Challenger 125-level in Saint-Tropez, France.
In a match pitting high-flying American Michael Mmoh up against Jesper De Jong, the incident happened at a crucial moment in the first set. Dutchman De Jong had a look at a break point to go 4-2 up. The fifth-seeded Mmoh saved it with a well-disguised drop shot.
But on a second look, it appears that a second ball interfered with the play after flying out of Mmoh's pocket - the ball meant for a second serve. Strangely enough, the chair umpire saw it, but chose to ignore it, telling De Jong, 'When the ball drops out from his pocket, you need to be disturbed.'
As soon as Mmoh won the point, the ball kids could be seen rushing to retrieve it from the baseline, where it appeared to be static.

Christopher Nolan is one of those directors whose films you watch and can immediately tell nothing was left to chance. Whichever way you feel about the stories he prefers to tell, it's clear he knows precisely what he wants to say and how to say it during any given moment. It's a quality that's allowed him to emerge as the rare true auteur working on a blockbuster scale over the past 20 years. After all, studios love a thrifty storyteller who makes the most of every dollar they spend, and even his detractors would have to admit Nolan excels in that department.
Even by his standards, however, Nolan was extremely fastidious when it came to shooting "Oppenheimer," and for a very good reason. Speaking on the "Team Deakins" podcast (via Variety), the film's production designer Ruth De Jong said, "It felt like a $100 million indie." Christopher Nolan gave up filming time for Oppenheimer in order to increase the budget for the production designer and recreate Los Alamos.
The Cillian Murphy-starring film was originally planned to be filmed for 85 days but instead, it wrapped up in 57 days.
During an appearance on the Team Deakins podcast, Oppenheimer production designer Ruth De Jong opened up about how Nolan opened up the budget so Los Alamos could come alive.
“It felt like a $100 million indie,” De Jong said. “This is not Tenet [which was shot in 96 days]. Christopher Nolan shaved 30 days off the shooting calendar for “Oppenheimer” in order to make the movie more realistic.
Production designer Ruth De Jong told the “Team Deakins” podcast earlier this month that the blockbuster about the development of the atom bomb was supposed to have a longer production timeline, but the director reduced the number of shooting days in order to prioritize the production design.
“Oppenheimer” has grossed nearly $778 million worldwide, including more than $299 million domestically, and last week passed the totals of 2014’s “Interstellar” and this year’s “Fast X” at the global box office.
The three-hour biopic was filmed in just 55 days, instead of the original 85, De Jong told the podcast hosts, cinematographer Roger Deakins and his collaborator, James Deakins.
The money saved from consolidating the filming, she said, enabled the reconstruction of Los Alamos, New Mexico, without relying on visual effects.

Christopher Nolan threw a bomb into the “Oppenheimer” production schedule: Originally slated for at least 85 days, the writer-director wrapped filming in 57 days. The reason for the rushed shoot? Allocating the film’s budget to production design.

There’s been a lot of talk about its Oscar potential next year, so it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty in the below-the-line crafts categories where it is likely to get nominations, as well as its primary competition in those races.
The presence of “Dune: Part Two” — unless Warner Bros. moves it due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes — hangs over “Oppenheimer” like a dark Oscar cloud. The first “Dune” won six Oscars in early 2022, all in craft and technical categories, only missing out on two of its nominations there for Best Costume Design (which went to “Cruella“) and for Best Makeup and Hairstyling (which went to “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”). It’s fairly safe to presume that the finale of Denis Villeneuve...

The Oscars for design — Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling — are often awarded together to reward movies that have excelled in their costume creations, set building, and distinct makeup work. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won all three while “Black Panther” won both Costume Design and Production Design. Those two are fantasy films, which is a leading genre in the design categories. But period pictures, historical epics, sci-fi flicks, and even distinct contemporary films have also done well in these races.
With that in mind, here’s a breakdown of the eight films we expect to be the strongest contenders across the three categories.
“Barbie”

Madrid (Spain), May 1 (Ians) Fc Barcelona continue to close in on the La Liga title, while at the bottom of the table, things got closer than ever.
Here are four things we learned after the 32nd round of matches in Spain this weekend:
1. Full-strength Barca Are A Different Beast
Although Betis seem to be slipping away at the wrong time of the season, as demonstrated by their 4-0 defeat in Camp Nou, the fact is the return to fitness of Andreas Christensen, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Ousmane Dembele has given Fc Barcelona another dimension, reports Xinhua.
Christensen scored Barca’s opening goal on his return from injury and provided more options to the Barca back four, while Pedri offered something extra all over the pitch, De Jong gave stability and the chance to step forward, and a fit Dembele offered pace and trickery in the attack.

Madrid, April 22 (Ians) Fc Barcelona play arguably their most important and difficult game between now and the end of the La Liga season when Atletico Madrid visit the Camp Nou Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Barcelona go into the weekend with nine games to play and an 11-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid at the top of the table – although that lead will be reduced to eight points if Madrid beat Celta Vigo on Saturday afternoon.
However, Barca’s recent performances have given cause for worry, with Xavi Hernandez’s side unable to score in their last three matches – a 4-0 defeat at home to Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey, a 0-0 draw in La Liga at home to Girona and a 0-0 draw away to Getafe last weekend, a Xinhua report said.
Failing to score in three consecutive matches is something that hasn’t happened to Barca for almost 20 years,...

Madrid (Spain), April 20 (Ians) Matchday 30 in Spain sees some vital head-to-head duels in the fight to avoid relegation in La Liga and one huge game in the race for the title.
Although Fc Barcelona hold an 11-point lead at the top of the table that looks unassailable with just nine games left to play, Xavi Hernandez’s side has disappointed in recent weeks.
Last weekend’s 0-0 draw in Getafe marked Barca’s third consecutive game without scoring a goal, and they are clearly missing Pedri, Dembele, De Jong, and Andreas Christensen.
Atletico Madrid’s visit to Camp Nou should be Barcelona’s toughest test between now and the end of the campaign, with Atletico travelling on the back of a run of 10 wins from 12 matches that have all but confirmed they will finish at least third.

Riyadh, Jan 16 (Ians) Young Barcelona midfielder Gavi starred as Fc Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-1 to win the final of the Spanish Supercup, here.
The 18-year-old gave two assists and scored one of Barca’s three goals in a complete display in the King Fahd Stadium as Barca outplayed their historic rivals for nearly all of the game to give Xavi Hernandez his first title since replacing Ronald Koeman as coach 14 months ago, reports Xinhua news agency.
Real Madrid brought Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy into their starting 11, while Andreas Christensen, Alex Balde and Sergio Busquets were all in for Barcelona.
With both sides playing an extra man in midfield, space was at a premium in the first half, with challenges not allowing players time on the ball.

For quite a few years, a belief held sway that bereavement consisted of a series of five – or was it seven? – stages, starting with shock and moving through to acceptance, after which you were more or less home free. Of course, no human emotion runs so smoothly, grief least of all. The various members of the family in Martijn de Jong’s Narcosis feel anger, anguish and denial by turns and sometimes simultaneously, each of them cocooned in their own sac of misery, unable to say what they feel, even to themselves. Grief here is as messy and resistant to resolution as it is in real life.

“Nope” isn’t just the title of Jordan Peele‘s third film. It was also the writer-director’s reaction when Universal suggested that the production use an existing Western town for the film’s theme park, Jupiter’s Claim. “He said nope!” production designer Ruth De Jong tells Gold Derby with a laugh. “No, they were very supportive once they understood exactly what Jordan and us as filmmakers [wanted to do]. … It was great because his vision was clear and Donna [Langley, Universal chairperson] was very receptive, and obviously we went off and did our thing. I think had it been where we found a Western town, I just don’t know that it would’ve been as powerful, character-wise.”
Arguably not, considering the specificity and idiosyncrasy of Jupiter’s Claim. The sci-fi horror hit follows siblings O.J. (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer), horse trainers for Hollywood productions, who set out to capture...

Narcosis, The Netherlands’ entry for the Best International Feature Oscar, mixes a cocktail of themes perhaps for the first time ever: clairvoyance, deep sea diving and grief.
Directed by Martijn de Jong and co-written with his life partner Laura van Dijk, Narcosis is about a young family that is hit by a tragedy and deals with it in a unique way. It won the Audience Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival as well as Best Film at the Nederlands Film Festival.

De Jong calls Narcosis “kind of a mirror” to his own family, “but not at all biographical.” During Deadline’s Contenders Film: International awards-season event, he told us he and van Dijk “treasure hunted” stories that were part of their lives.
“One of them is the clairvoyance which is something that my mother does. She has this ability in real life.

World Cup Qatar 2022 might be making headlines for all the wrong reasons — including alleged human rights violations — but the tournament is pushing ahead with its Nov. 20 start date, when the host squad will face off against Ecuador. Ahead of that opening tie, FIFA 23 has launched its World Cup mode as well as a new Path to Glory promo in Ultimate Team.
While the traditional tournament mode is pretty straightforward, including a World Cup Live match type that allows you to play past or current fixtures as the real-world cup progresses, Path to Glory requires a little more explanation for those new to Fut.
Here’s what you need to know about Path to Glory, including the Team 2 cards released by EA Sports ahead of the start of Qatar 2022:

Nope, the latest terror from the mind of Jordan Peele, is available now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital via Universal. Among the special features is Shadows: The Making of Nope, a 56-minute behind-the-scenes featurette providing valuable insight into the production.
In addition to key cast and crew members, some “below the line” workers are interviewed for additional context. Here are eight things I learned from the Nope documentary…
1. Gordy’s attack is a metaphor
Gordy’s attack was the first scene shot for the film. Much has been speculated about the upright shoe, which goes unmentioned in the special features, but Peele notes how the scene signifies the exploitation of purity. “I think the DNA of the movie has this big question about the human addiction to spectacle and what happens when money becomes involved in that.”

Martijn de Jong’s feature directorial debut, Narcosis, is off to a dream-like start as The Netherlands recently selected the Dutch drama to compete on its behalf for a Best International Feature Film nomination at the 95th Academy Awards.
Narcosis, which de Jong co-wrote with his partner Laura van Dijk, chronicles a young family that’s become rudderless after losing their patriarch (Fedja van Huêt’s John) a year earlier during a deep-sea diving expedition. While it’s not an autobiographical story, de Jong and van Dijk infused the story with plenty of personal details from their own lives. Perhaps the most notable example is that the family matriarch, Merel, portrayed by Dutch actor Thekla Reuten, is a medium, which de Jong’s own mother happens to be. Ultimately, de Jong was relieved when Reuten embraced this particular character detail since clairvoyance is often stigmatized by the Dutch.

The particular limbo of grief, perennial fertile ground for drama, receives straightforward treatment in Narcosis, but with a poetic twist. Tracing the effect of a deep-sea diver’s death on his wife and children, writer-helmer Martijn de Jong infuses a standard template of family loss with a sense of mystery. Ocean exploration and the psychic abilities of the explorer’s widow are the story’s most unusual angles, and the restraint with which de Jong treats them is one of the film’s most effective qualities. The day-to-day takes on an understated eeriness that matches the unarticulated ache of the bereaved.

Madrid, Oct (Ians) Besides an uphill struggle to book their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League, Fc Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan on Tuesday has left coach Xavi Hernandez with problems in defense.
Although Barca can look to a dreadful decision by the Var not to award them a late penalty after a handball in the Inter penalty area, that should not disguise a poor performance on the night.
The defeat means Barca have to beat Inter next Wednesday in Camp Nou and probably also Bayern Munich to book a place in the last 16 that is so important to the club’s economy.
Xavi was without players such as Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde and Hector Bellerin, Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong on Tuesday and then lost Andreas Christensen with twisted ankle ligaments during the game, reports Xinhua.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 30 (Ians) Injuries have affected the plans of Fc Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez ahead of his side’s visit to play Mallorca on Saturday.
The international break saw Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Memphis Depay and Frenkie De Jong all pick up injuries (long-term ones in the case of Araujo and Depay), while Kounde and De Jong are unlikely to be fit for Saturday.
To make matters worse for Xavi, right back Hector Bellerin suffered a calf injury in training and is also out of action for between two to three weeks.
That means Sergi Roberto is almost certain to start on the right of the Barcelona defense, although the fact he is recovering from injury means Eric Garcia could be asked to move across from central defense, with Gerard Pique partnering Andreas Christensen at the heart of the back line.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t seen “Nope,” now in theaters.
Jordan Peele’s latest film “Nope” is set on the outskirts of Hollywood, focusing on people working in the margins of showbiz desperate to crawl into the center. From main sibling duo Oj and Emerald Hayward (Daniel Kaaluya and Keke Palmer), horse trainers trying to capture footage of a UFO in order to sell it off for fame, or Ricky “Jupe” Park (Steven Yeun), a former child star hanging onto his past glory through a carnival fashioned off of his best-known role, the characters are all strivers obsessed with the spectacle of the film, no matter how dangerous said spectacle ca be. The film is, fittingly enough, a spectacle in itself, in no small part thanks to the meticulous production design of Ruth De Jong.

Producers of the indie film musical “Americana Dream” have tapped Nashville-based music artists Mary Sarah and Sam Varga to play the story’s central couple, Billie Carton and Lucky Fontana.

No one can accuse writer-director Jordan Peele of resting on his laurels. In his third directorial effort, “Nope,” Peele takes as big a leap forward in terms of ambition and audacity as he did from “Get Out” to “Us,” remaining as personal, obsessive, and idiosyncratic as ever in his interests but exploring his preoccupations across a more expansive canvas. “Nope” is both a nerve-shredding sci-fi horror film and a wry, multi-faceted satire, a spectacle about spectacle that delivers the satisfactions of the summer tentpole movie while asking why we crave those satisfactions — and what it costs the people who manufacture them.
By populating his sci-fi epic with characters operating on the margins of show business — a financially strapped horse trainer (Daniel Kaluuya), his attention-hungry sister (Keke Palmer), a grown-up child actor with a traumatic past (Steven Yeun), and a past his prime cinematographer (Michael Wincott) — Peele is able to pull...
