Hope Runs High has acquired U.S. rights to Augusto Sandino’s sophomore feature “A Vanishing Fog,” which won the SXSW Zeiss cinematography prize. The film is slated for an early 2024 opening in U.S. theaters. It’s the first feature to be shot in Colombia’s Sumapaz Páramo, the largest ecosystem of its kind in the world.
“In the middle of the staggering and endangered Sumapaz Paramo ecosystem; F, a solitary explorer, strives to protect the mystical and fragile land he inhabits, while caring for his ailing father,” the synopsis reads.
“Augusto Sandino’s incredible blend of playful surrealism and the overwhelming individuality of the environment in which the film is set has stayed with me since my first viewing. I believe his ability to balance visual scale, cinematic playfulness, and true heart make him an artist we should be engaging with frequently,” said Hope Runs High curator Taylor Purdee.

Despite the snow that just pounded my town today in furious squalls, summer is just around the corner.

It wasn't only interest in getting back in the water that turned me on to Hot Water.

The project has been in development for years, with directors attached to Sorkin’s script that included Paul Greengrass, Steven Spielberg, and Ben Stiller. Now, Sorkin has gotten it over the finish line, Netflix acquired it as one of their Oscar players, and a Teaser Trailer has been released. The Academy may find this one hard to resist, but more on that below, as well as your look at the Teaser itself. The film is a dramatization of the infamous true life events. The Fshd Society, a 501c3 nonprofit patient advocacy organization, has announced that Max Adler, an actor best known for his roles on the hit series “Glee,” available for streaming on Netflix, and “Switched at Birth”, is serving as this year’s national ambassador for the organization’s signature fundraiser, Walk & Roll to Cure Fshd, taking place September 12.
There are currently no treatments available to people with Fshd and with Max Adler’s help the Fshd Society is hoping to raise $500,000 to be put towards research and drug development with the goal of having an approved therapy by 2025.
While Covid-19 forced the Fshd Society to shift their annual Walk & Roll to a virtual format, Adler enthusiastically accepted the challenge of raising awareness and funds despite difficult landscape because of his personal connection to Fshd, one of the most prevalent forms of Muscular Dystrophy. As confirmation of Naya Rivera’s death spread, her former costars and friends took to Twitter to honor the late actress. She was 33.
Rivera died while on an excursion with her 4-year-old son at Lake Piru in Ventura County, Calif. last Wednesday. Other visitors had noticed the young boy, Josey, alone in the boat and notified the authorities.
Josey was recovered unharmed. According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Eric Buschow, Josey said he and Rivera went swimming together but he got back in the boat and his mother didn’t. The search for Rivera lasted for five days, with specialist divers and sonar equipment brought in. Authorities confirmed to TheWrap her body was recovered Monday. A cause of death has not yet been determined.

There aren’t many stories as grody as the one being told in Mope. For those who don’t know the true tale, I’ll keep the salacious details to be discovered, but for those who know what this film is about, it isn’t hard to imagine the avenues being taken here. While the flick is pretty grimy, there’s an undercurrent of trying for something more. Mope doesn’t pull it off, despite its Boogie Nights ambitions, but it is somewhat encouraging to see the concept not executed with a lowest common denominator feel. You’ll need a shower after watching this, but you’ll also be left with a bit to think about. It’s a missed opportunity, but one not without some redeeming qualities. The movie is a mix of comedy and drama, leading up to tragedy. For those aware of the true story, this is...

"You'll do anything I ask?" Quiver has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Mope, which first premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival. It also played at the Cinepocalypse, Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival, and Fantasy Filmfest in Germany last year. Based on a true crime story by Michael Louis Albo, the film is a dark comedy about the multibillion-dollar world of pornography, the term "mope" refers to a low-level, wannabe porn actor. In this tragic true story, Stephen and Herbert, respectively known by their porn alter egos Steve Driver and Tom Dong, were two such mopes—real-life best friends attempting to live the impossible dream. This all looks as crazy and twisted and wacky as it sounds. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Steve and Kelly Sry as Tom, with David Arquette, Max Adler, Tonya Cornelisse, Clayton Rohner, Brian Huskey, and Peggy Dunne. This seems totally ridiculous, but ridiculous in a good way.

As with just about any phrase that gets repeated over and over throughout the years, “representation matters” has threatened to become a benign catchall for Hollywood’s ills. But the saying is nonetheless rooted in a simple, powerful sentiment: that seeing a piece of yourself meaningfully represented in media can enable deeper understanding for you and the broader audience alike. Beyond mere entertainment, representation has the capacity to change minds — for better and for worse.
This conflict forms the spine of “Visible: Out on Television,” a new docu-series from Apple TV Plus that conveys the breadth of Lgbtq+ representation on American television from the medium’s beginnings through today. It’s a hugely ambitious project, and it takes its mission seriously, featuring a genuinely astonishing breadth of research and dozens of interviews with Lgbtq+ actors (including executive producers Wilson Cruz and Wanda Sykes), writers, allies and activists. The impressive cast of Aaron Sorkin‘s historical drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 just got a little bit bigger with the addition of Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch and Glee alum Max Adler.
Sorkin is directing the Steven Spielberg produced film and the two actors join the already cast Michael Keaton, William Hurt, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Frank Langella, Mark Rylance, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The film recounts “the infamous 1969 trial of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy and more, arising from the countercultural protests in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The trial transfixed the nation and sparked a conversation about mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government.”

One of the more provocative films that screened as part of the Midnight lineup at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Lucas Heyne’s Mope, which is centered around the real-life experiences of two low-level porn stars (generally referred to as “Mopes”) who are chasing fame and women, but their dreams and lives are both tragically cut short. While in Park City last week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Heyne and several of the cast members from Mope, including David Arquette, Brian Huskey, Kelly Sry, Max Adler, and Tonya Cornelisse, and they chatted about the parallels between the film’s two main characters and their own struggles in Hollywood, the weight of creating a film based on true events, helping erase the stigma surrounding pornography and sex workers, and more.

First off, it is important that the definition of mope is clear: a mope is a person in the porn industry operating in the lowest possible positions, usually angling for a chance to make it big. This includes doing some truly gross, demeaning things. It’s also important to know that this film is based on a true story. For Nathan Stewart-Jarrett’s Steve Hill–he likes to be called Steve Driver–and Tom Dong (Kelly Sry), being a mope is okay. For a while, at least. The two meet at a bukkake film shoot and become fast friends. Directed by Lucas Heyne, Mope is an incredibly dark showbiz comedy that pulls no punches, for better or worse.
Thanks to Steve’s intense optimism and Tom’s It savvy, the new duo land jobs as live-in mopes for Eric (Brian Huskey), a disgusting porn producer who runs a bottom-of-the-barrel studio.

Lucas Heyne’s feature directing debut Mope will have its world premiere later this month in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. Deadline has the first look at the movie co-written by Zack Newkirk and Heyne and produced by Parkside Pictures in association with Saxton Cinema & Uncooperative Pictures.
The drama is based on the true story of a real-life murder in 2010 at a San Fernando Valley porn company. That’s where Stephen Clancy Hill, a mope (slang for a wannabe porn star), who was living in the company’s warehouse at the time, went on a rampage with a sword when he was told he was fired. He eventually killed his friend and fellow mope Herbert Wong, who tried to intervene when Hill was attacking two others. Hill was killed in a standoff with police five days later.

The phenomenon of treating anthology series as collections of films is a fairly recent invention — episodes of “Sherlock” and “Black Mirror” have won the past three best TV movie Emmys, beating out genuine-article made-for-tv movies. It’s easy to be dubious about the treatment of these shows, whose episodes share a united sensibility as well as overarching themes and, in “Sherlock’s” case, characters, as stand-alone pieces of cinema. But with its first installment, debuting Oct. 5 after screening at the Los Angeles Film Festival Sept. 21, Hulu’s new anthology “Into the Dark” comes far closer to looking like a new film franchise than its contemporaries. Indeed, it looks so much like one of executive producer Jason Blum’s horror movies that it fails to captivate as TV.

Valentino Dixon is a free man. The 48-year-old — who was serving a 39-years-to-life sentence for the 1991 killing of Torriano Jackson — can thank golf paintings for his Sept. 20 release. Although he's never stepped foot on a course before, Dixon became intrigued by the sport when the warden brought in a photograph of Augusta National's 12th hole. He would grind colored pencils to their nubs and draw for ten hours a day. In 2012, Golf Digest's Max Adler wrote about the inmate's golf-scapes, which garnered recognition from around the country. "The guys can't understand," Dixon said at the time. "They always say I don't need to be drawing this golf stuff. I know it makes no sense, but for some reason, my spirit is attuned to this game." View this post on Instagram After 27 years in prison, Valentino Dixon walked free today. With an investigation Golf Digest's Max Adler helped open, an county court vacated Dixon's murder conviction.

Golf Digest, a publication not widely known for investigative journalism, is being credited with helping to overturn the wrongful murder conviction of an innocent man.

It’s a case of art imitating life and vice versa. This month, a legal thriller about the abuse of an African-American kid in the foster system from producer Peter Samuelson (Arlington Road) is in post-production and readying for festivals. But just last week, the screenwriter for the film Foster Boy won a $45M judgment against a social services agency — the largest award in the history of the state of Illinois in a case involving the death of a toddler in the foster system.
It was a case the producer/screenwriter/lawyer Jay Paul Deratany handled himself.
But a year before Deratany even knew about the the death of 2-year-old Lavandis Hudson in the foster system, the attorney was writing a screenplay about an African-American boy who is abused by a private social services company. Deratany has been practicing law for about 30 years — 16 of them handling cases involving foster care negligence and child neglect.

It was only a matter of time until The Flash decided to play one of the most classic cards that exist in almost in all superhero stories.
The Flash Season 4 Episode 16 allowed Iris West to get to be a speedster for a day while Barry got to step into her shoes.
Like many Iris West fans, I have been waiting for this moment since the beginning of The Flash. Was the wait worth it and everything we had hoped?
Yes, but with an unfortunate heavy dose of Ralph Dibny feeling entitled and mopey. Let's start with our loud, Elongated Man who is becoming a problem.
I have enjoyed Ralph for most of The Flash Season 4. It didn't help that he started out as a sexist douche, especially given some drama about a former showrunner.
But Ralph has had a solid progression throughout the season. But lately, it has become a...

By now, you’ve probably noticed that the Arrowverse isn’t just populated by veterans of musical theater, but also those who’ve actually starred on the series Glee itself. In fact, as you may remember, last season saw The Flash and Supergirl engage in a musical crossover that I’ve done my best to forget.
Having said that, it’s time for yet another actor to join the reunion club that already includes the likes of Grant Gustin, Melissa Benoist, Jeremy Jordan and Darren Criss, that being Max Adler. According to Flash TV News, he’ll be playing Jaco Birch, who’s described as “’an obsessive music fanatic who worships at the altar of classic heavy metal.’ Birch is a roadie for all the contemporary metal bands you’ve never heard of… and there’s one other thing: he loves to set things on fire.”

Adi Shankar is not your typical movie maker. Along with producing features, including Dredd, The Grey, and A Walk Among the Tombstones, he also worked on a number of short films, like Venom: Truth in Journalism with True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten, and the dark and gritty Power/Rangers short he made with Joseph Kahn. Now, he’s directing his first feature film, and it’s a superhero movie, no less. But what’s most interesting is the insane cast he's put together. According to The Wrap, the film Adi Shankar’s Gods and Secrets features WWE star “Diamond” Dallas Page, as well as Twilight stars Kellan Lutz (Emmett) and Jackson Rathbone (Jasper); You’re Next star Sharni Vinson; comedian Andy Milonakis; Denise Richards; Jane Seymour; Breaking Bad vet Rj Mitte (Walter White Jr.); and Glee stars Max Adler (Dave ...

We know it’s hard to believe, but the last episode of Glee ~*eVeR*~ airs tonight. The New Directions have given us an incredible six years of singing, dancing, and awkward teen sexual tension, but it’s time for them to leave the show choir room for good. Admittedly, the most recent seasons of Glee haven’t been that great (this season especially, with its self-referencing jokes and out-of-control fat-shaming). However, we can’t let Ryan Murphy’s inability to craft a third act stop us from honoring Glee. When it was good, it was really fucking good. And, more importantly, it changed culture forever.
From putting gay teens on primetime to introducing us to living Ken doll/actual sex god Darren Criss, Glee wasn’t afraid to go where television had never been before. It broke racial, sexual, and gender boundaries — not to mention it brought the musical back in a big way.
