Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the narrative of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.
Exclusive: One of the many talking points to emerge from this week’s Cannes Film Festival screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Megalopolis is whether distributors will be able to replicate the film’s ‘fourth wall moment’.
As most reviews for the film detail, at a certain point in Wednesday’s world premiere a performer walked onto the stage in front of the cinema screen and engaged with Adam Driver’s character in a device known as “breaking the fourth wall.”
Is it plausible that distributors would replicate such a moment in every screening? Unlikely. But at least one will give it a good shot.
Jean Labadie, who runs the film’s French distributor Le Pacte, told Deadline: “We certainly will do a lot of such performances. With four screenings a day in many...

As audiences take their seats for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis in Cannes, we have a big update on the status of the movie's theatrical release.
Despite speculation that the legendary Godfather director's self-funded passion project might struggle to find a distributor (there was already some concern before the recent controversies), it's just been announced that the sci-fi epic has been given a global IMAX release.
“The film is going to get an IMAX release,” IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told the press during a Cannes event earlier today. “One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we’ve committed to Francis to do a global Imax release.”
Gelford added that he'd met with Coppola in Cannes, and that they would most likely wait to see who will distribute the film in the U.S. and when before deciding on a theatrical release date. The film...

While 3D cinema had come and gone in popularity, one premium screen that was made popular by Christopher Nolan’s attempt to use the technology is IMAX. Originally, the special cameras and format were meant for nature & science documentaries. The picture quality was unlike any that was seen before in order to capture the immense detail in every facet of the natural life on Earth. Then, Nolan had taken to using it for his blockbuster sequel, The Dark Knight, and crews of camera operators and projectionists would have to learn to utilize the practice for general audience movies.
The format has since taken off and has become a more luxurious and immersive way to watch a movie. This is especially if the film were a special effects-laden narrative that aims to take you on a journey onto a bigger plane. The practice has become more and more common in Hollywood with their big movies,...

Following the global success of Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two, Imax is looking forward to its biggest ever “filmed for Imax” slate in 2025, including at least 14 titles currently shooting with Imax film or Imax-certified digital cameras, which are due for release next year.
The company said today that the 2025 slate more than doubles any previous year in its history, as Hollywood and overseas filmmakers and studios increasingly create for its platform. (Scroll down for the full 2025 roster.)
The increase in Imax-focused production follows a run of historic box office success for films shot with its proprietary cameras despite its nearly 1,700 commercial locations accounting for less than 1% of total screens worldwide.
Recent highlights include over 20% of the global box office ($190M+) on Universal’s Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan shot the Oscar winner entirely with Imax film cameras. It’s the fifth highest grossing Imax movie of all time.

One Cannes ritual is IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond’s annual press lunch. IMAX is thriving in the global marketplace, with more than 1,700 screens in 90 countries, as audiences continue to recognize and embrace the global brand for giant film and digital cameras and big-screen formats. Helfand announced the company’s upcoming 2025 filmed for IMAX slate (below) while at Cannes, which he believes will break records for the company. Thanks to IMAX believer Chris Nolan‘s global blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” IMAX performed at peak capacity with over $1 billion in revenue in 2023, matching the company’s 2019 pre-pandemic record.
IMAX delivered 20% of the global box office for “Oppenheimer” — shot entirely with IMAX film cameras — and more than $190 million worldwide, making it the fifth highest grossing IMAX film of all time. IMAX also delivered 21% of the global box office for “Dune: Part Two” — shot entirely with IMAX-certified digital cameras — and over $145 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest.

Imax is going big for 2025, unveiling on Thursday that it will release at least 14 titles in its “filmed for Imax” slate, features shot on Imax film or Imax-certified cameras, more than double that of any previous year.
Among the highlights going out on the wide-screen format will be Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World, The Fantastic Four, and Tron: Ares; Warner Bros.’ still-untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan feature and its DC release Superman; Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 8; and Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon. (See full slate with release dates below).
Earlier, Imax said that Francis Ford Coppola’s Cannes entry Megalopolis would get a global Imax release.
Imax is coming off the success of 2023 wide-screen releases such as Oppenheimer — which generated more than $190 million worldwide, some 20 percent of its overall gross, on Imax screens — and Dune: Part 2 (21 percent, $145 million). Oppenheimer was the fifth-highest-grossing Imax film of all time.

As Deadline first told you, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis was always destined for an Imax release. Heck, the first screening was shown at Universal CityWalk Imax theater. So, there’s no news in the fact that the $120 million dystopian future epic is getting a global Imax release. But here’s some: we hear that Coppola himself secured a commitment that Megalopolis will play IMAX in at least 20 U.S. cities in late September. IMAX screens have been a major part of his vision for his self-funded film, so this was in place even before he unveiled the film for the first time at a buyer’s screening, after which a cynical press dug in that he had not yet secured a distributor in the U.S. Coppola, his lawyer Barry Hirsch, and Goodfellas have since made deals in numerous offshore territories.

IMAX have cast a big vote of confidence in Coppola’s passion project ahead of its Cannes premiere.
Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis might still be sitting without a US distributor, but backers might have had their interest piqued by the promise the film will definitely earn itself an IMAX release.
Speaking to press ahead of the film’s Cannes premiere today, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said: “One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we’ve committed to Francis to do a global IMAX release.”
A guarantee of life on the biggest screens is a sizeable boon for Megalopolis’ box office prospects – the inflated ticket prices of IMAX screenings should add a few digits onto the film’s opening weekend, if nothing else.

It had been reported earlier that Francis Ford Coppola’s newest movie, Megalopolis, was going to be a tricky sell for distributors because, even though there is a definite commercial appeal, there was also an artsy quality to it that might make it seem less accessible to sell to general audiences. However, as the first clip and the teaser trailer have shown, the new film from the Apocalypse Now director has stunningly dynamic cinematography and some very cinematic special effects sequences. It has the look of a grand sci-fi epic, and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that it will be getting the treatment of a grand cinema epic as the film will be screening in IMAX globally.
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond addressed the press Thursday as Cannes about Megalopolis. He stated, “The film is going to get an IMAX release. One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly.

Imax has committed screens around the world to show Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” the company’s CEO Richard Gelfond confirmed at a Cannes Film Festival event on Thursday.
The film’s trailer, which debuted on Tuesday, said that “Megalopolis” would be coming to Imax theaters this year — but it was not specified that the release would be global.
The run-up to the premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed epic at Cannes on Friday has been filled with anticipation and controversy, partly because “Megalopolis” has yet to secure a U.S. distributor — though a global release with Imax may help sweeten the pot. The film has found distribution in France and other international territories, including the U.K., Spain and Italy.

Sm Cinema, the largest exhibitor in the Philippines, and IMAX have pacted for a significant expansion to their longstanding partnership with 10 IMAX with Laser systems in the market. Imax more than hit its Q1 numbers with $79 million in revenue last quarter (down 9%) and a solid earnings bump, thanks in large part to its run with Dune: Part 2, a blockbuster amid a slow quarter for big releases. The box office was offset in part by a dip in new Imax systems sales.
The large format exhibitor’s global box office of $261 million marked its third highest grossing Q1 ever, driven by Dune, Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, Imax-exclusive Queen Rock Montreal and local language releases (21% of the total) in a quarter hit by a soft release slate due to the Hollywood strikes.
Adjusted Ebitda of $32 million was about flat from the year before, beating Wall Street consensus. Net income of $3.3 million was up from $2.5 million. The shares have been on a roll recently, including this week, as Wall Street increasingly considers...

Imax continued a box office recovery on its global screens during the first quarter as Dune: Part Two has pulled in more than $143 million in global box office to date, or 21 percent of the film’s total gross, the cinema technologies company reported Thursday.
Overall revenue at the giant screen technologies company came to $79.1 million, down 9 percent from a year-earlier $86.9 million.
However, Imax posted net income at $3.3 million, up from a year-earlier profit of $2.5 million, as the company continued to recover from the impact of the pandemic on the exhibition sector.
The adjusted net profit per share in the latest period came to 15 cents, which compared to 16 cents per-share in the same year-ago period.

Imax fans turned up in droves to see “Dune 2” on the really big screen, helping the company top analyst earnings estimates for the first quarter of 2024.

The Trip To Baden-Baden didn’t go as planned.
Last summer, Imax CEO Rich Gelfond touched down in the German city for a conference of theater owners, looking to hype the blockbusters that were about to unspool on the company’s football-field-sized screens. But instead of excitement, Gelfond was greeted with outrage. “I was almost attacked,” he remembers, lifting his palm as if to ward off assailants.
All the sound and fury directed at Gelfond that day stemmed from a battle that had recently erupted in Hollywood between two top talents. At stake had been access to Imax’s screens: Tom Cruise and Christopher Nolan had both wanted them in July, among the busiest times for moviegoing.
But even Cruise, who had personally lobbied Gelfond to give his next “Mission: Impossible” tentpole a longer run, couldn’t outmaneuver Nolan. Nolan’s epic “Oppenheimer” was shot with Imax film cameras, which...

The NBC television network will extend its live coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony to IMAX locations nationwide on Friday, July 26. This is the first time the global event will be presented live in IMAX.
This will be the first-ever Summer Olympics opening ceremony not held in a stadium. The organizers are turning one of the world’s most famous waterways, the River Seine, into the world’s biggest theatrical stage.
Instead of walking into a stadium, a four-mile-long flotilla of nearly 100 boats will carry thousands of athletes from more than 200 countries past hundreds of thousands of spectators seated on the banks of the Seine.
The river parade will follow the course of the Seine past the iconic sites of Paris, from Austerlitz Bridge, beside the Jardin des Plantes, crossing through central Paris and finishing in front of the Trocadéro, where the final elements of the show and ceremony will take place.
This will be the first-ever Summer Olympics opening ceremony not held in a stadium. The organizers are turning one of the world’s most famous waterways, the River Seine, into the world’s biggest theatrical stage.

Imax and NBCUniversal have signed a deal to bring live coverage of the Paris Olympic Games opening ceremony on July 26 to more than 150 giant-screen theaters in the U.S. as ticketed events.
The agreement will see NBC’s 2024 Olympic Games launch coverage set to take place around the River Seine in Paris, rather than a sports arena, super-sized for Imax screens. Imax and NBCUniversal will then split the box office take.
“We are excited to extend NBC’s coverage of the opening ceremony to Imax theaters across the U.S., allowing fans to gather and watch the highly anticipated and awe-inspiring start to the Paris Olympic Games this July,” Rich Gelfond, CEO of Imax, said in a statement on Friday. The deal with NBC marks the first time live coverage of the Olympic Games will screen in Imax theaters.

The rush for Imax screens continues.
A24 and the large-format exhibitor are teaming to launch a monthly screening program that will showcase titles from the leading indie distributor that have never played before in Imax auditoriums.
The series kicks off March 27 with Alex Garland’s Ex Machina (2014). Following the movie, the audience will be treated to an exclusive sneak peek of the filmmaker’s upcoming dystopian pic Civil War.
A24 opens Civil War in theaters everywhere in North America on April 12, following its world premiere this week at SXSW (the pic was already set to get a full run in Imax).
Imax’s profile has never been higher, thanks to record-breaking numbers for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and capped by Oppenheimer‘s Oscars sweep on Sunday, including winning best picture. Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas hit a few expected notes in her Best Picture acceptance speech Sunday night, thanking director Christopher Nolan and Universal Pictures.
But another name in her speech was probably less familiar to many at the Dolby Theatre or watching the Oscar telecast from home: Rich Gelfond, longtime CEO of Imax Corp. Thomas thanked the exec “and everybody else at Imax for believing in this movie when it maybe didn’t make that much sense to do so. Thank you to all the theaters. As a moviegoer and as a filmmaker, that’s why we do what we do.”
The speech capped a big night for Oppenheimer, which won seven Oscars out of a total of 13 nominations. Her shout-out of Imax also highlighted a traditional aspect of the film’s blockbuster run: celluloid film.

The prophecies speak of a Voice from the Outer World, who is destined to save the box office from starvation and lead it out of the darkness. Possibly with some help from a panda that knows kung fu.
As it was written, so it has come to pass. Though "Kung Fu Panda 4" has knocked "Dune: Part Two" from the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend, the two movies have vastly different target audiences and are happily co-existing. "Kung Fu Panda 4" grossed $19.4 million on Friday (including previews) and is now expected to gross $55 million over its opening weekend, according to Deadline. "Dune: Part Two" grossed $12.3 million on Friday, putting it on track to gross $44 million over its second weekend in theaters. That would be a drop of just 47% from its $82.5 million debut last week -- a very sturdy hold -- and would bring its running domestic total to an estimated $154.7 million.

Part Two is the second of a two-part adaptation of Frank Herbret’s 1965 novel of the same name and it follows Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides uniting with Fremen people to go on a war against House Harkonnen.
The second part of Dune opened up to being highly appreciated by the audience and the critics. Part Two in just a few days has managed to gross over $189 million worldwide making it the fifth-highest-grossing movie of 2024. Dune: Part Two sold out on Imax screens on its opening weekend, company CEO Richard Gelfond told an investors conference on Tuesday.
“We ran out of seats pretty much globally,” he told the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Technology Conference during a session that was webcast. Dune: Part Two bowed on 809 Imax screens and raked in $32.2 million in global box office, or a notable 18 percent share. The tentpole will open in China this weekend, with Japan to follow.
Like his friend Christopher Nolan with Oppenheimer, Villeneuve shot part of Dune: Part Two with Imax cameras. “So one in five people in the world decided to see Dune 2 on Imax and I think people haven’t paid enough attention,” Gelfond argued as cinema-goers opted to see the sci-fi thriller in Imax and other premium formats.

It’s honestly very impressive what people can do when they give their minds creative freedom. Director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is a prime example of what the human mind is capable of and how beautifully a book can be adapted into a movie.
And it’s not just us praising Dune: Part Two for its visuals. Several important people in high places also seem to agree with the statement and are now expecting a third part of the franchise. Well, Legendary Entertainment’s CEO thinks that there will be a few conditions that need to be fulfilled before they can start making Dune: Part Three.

The box office needed a messiah and it found one in "Dune: Part Two." Director Denis Villeneuve's much-anticipated sequel finally hit theaters over the weekend after being delayed by several months. The wait proved to be worth it as moviegoers turned out in massive numbers to see the film, with the sequel making twice as much on opening weekend as its predecessor. And this is truly just the beginning.
The follow-up to 2021's "Dune" made $82.5 million domestically to go with $100 million overseas for a whopping $182.5 million global debut. It was the biggest opening for any movie in months. It gave movie theaters something to celebrate, and it all but ensured that a third installment in the franchise based on author Frank Herbert's legendary sci-fi series will be made in the not-too-distant future. But what factors led to such a massive debut? Why did "Part Two" make so much...

Not even the prophetic visions of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, the messianic protagonist of “Dune,” could have predicted the commercial appeal of director Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious interplanetary epics.
After all, when the long-in-the-works adaptation finally gained momentum in 2017, it was superheroes, not cerebral stories, that ruled the box office. “Dune,” in particular, was notoriously difficult to translate to cinema, as Hollywood learned from director David Lynch’s disastrous 1984 version.
It wasn’t just sci-fi fans, but general audiences, too, who helped “Dune: Part Two” ride those massive sandworms to the top of box office charts. The big-budget sequel has collected a bigger-than-expected $82.5 million in North America and $182.5 million globally in its first weekend of release. It landed the biggest domestic opening of the year while helping to revive a barren box office. The actors strike and a series of holiday blockbusters that didn’t shine as brightly took a bite out of Imax’s fourth-quarter earnings. Revenues at the exhibition and technology company fell to $86 million, a 12% drop from the $98 million that the company reported in the prior-year quarter. Profits, however, were essentially flat, with Imax reporting net income of $2.5 million, a 3% decline from the $2.6 million in the prior-year quarter. Imax’s adjusted earnings per share of 17 cents represented an 11% drop.
Imax’s revenues missed Wall Street’s estimates of $89.6 million, while its profits topped projections of 10 cents per share.
Heading into the Christmastime frame, Imax faced tough comparisons with the close of 2022 when “Avatar: The Way of Water” dominated the box office. James Cameron’s ambitious sequel inspired moviegoers to check out Pandora on the widest screens available, which was good news for Imax as the company has become synonymous with the fanboy and fangirl fare.

Imax saw sales dip in the fourth quarter to $86 million from $98 million, in line with Wall Street forecasts, as the company focused on the full year and its accelerated global expansion. The stock has popped more than 8% in after-market trading on the numbers and outlook.
Adjusted ebitdawas $23 million (also down from the year ago), and Eps was flat at 5 cents a share, also in line.
The fourth quarter was hit by big ticket films moving out of 2023. Oppenheimer, which came out over the summer — in Q2 – was a big boost.
Full-year 2023 revenue jumped 25% to $375 million.
“As the entertainment landscape transforms, it is clear that IMAX is among its premier, in-demand destinations,” said CEO Rich Gelfond. He’s upbeat about Dune: Part 2, which opens this weekend and will get an Imax run. Both Oppenheimer and the new Dune were filmed in Imax.

Imax released its fourth quarter earnings on Tuesday, and posted slightly lower net earnings on falling overall revenues.
That came amid tentpoles like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Wonka playing on the cinema technology company’s big screens. Overall fourth-quarter revenue came to $86 million, down 12 percent from a year-earlier $98 million when Imax was experiencing a rapid reopening of cinemas in China.
The large-format exhibitor recorded net income of $2.5 million, which compared to a profit of $2.6 million in the same period last year. During the latest quarter, the adjusted per-share profit in Q4 came to 11 cents, down 11 percent from a year-earlier per-share profit of 19 cents.
That beat a Zacks Consensus Estimate projection that Imax would post quarterly per-share earnings of 10 cents, but missed on a forecast for overall revenues to reach $89.59 million.

Sunday Am Writethru: There’s not much going on at the weekend box office. Yes, point fingers at the dual strikes’ impact on the theatrical schedule. But it’s also January, which typically counts a couple of the year’s lowest-grossing weekends. The 3-day for all titles is looking at $68M, which is not only the first weak weekend of the New Year, but 8% off the same frame a year ago, which did $72.4M. Per Box Office Mojo, the first two weekends of January grossed $85.7M and $97M, respectively.

Imax boasted a near-record year at the box office in 2023, thanks to the smash success of Christopher Nolan’s historical epic “Oppenheimer.”
The company — which houses some of the biggest and brightest movie theater screens, known in the industry as premium large formats (Plf) — collected $1.06 billion worldwide, the second-largest year in its history. Ticket sales were up 24.4% from 2022’s total revenues.
With $393.2 million in North American box office returns, 2023 ranked as Imax’s highest-grossing year domestically — above 2019, a year that fueled nine billion-dollar blockbusters including “Avengers: Endgame.” Imax also recorded a benchmark-setting $227.1 million in local language box office from films across China, India, and Japan, as well as new studio partners in Indonesia and Thailand.
Part of the year-over-year growth is because Imax has expanded its footprint, with 1,615 locations in 2023 compared to 1,529 locations in 2019. Imax also programmed more films than it has in the past; 98 new movies played on the...

Imax delivered $1.06 billion in global box office in 2023, near to its highest grossing year ever with $1.1 billion in pre-pandemic movie ticket sales worldwide in 2019.
On Tuesday, the entertainment technology company said its second highest grossing year for ticket receipts came on giant screen play for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer — which was shot with Imax cameras and grossed $183.2 million in global box office last year for the company — as well as the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and a host of other Hollywood and local language titles, concert films and live events.
The 2023 global box office figures excluded booking fees in China, which saw a box office recovery amid the pandemic. Including China booking fees would have got Imax’s global box office last year to $1.09 billion.
And Imax had its highest grossing year ever at the domestic box office with $393.2 million in movie ticket receipts, while also posting...

In 2023, the rules didn’t apply to many of the year’s biggest success stories.
For the past two decades, superheroes and sequels have dominated at the box office. But in the last year, many of the movie business’ Tiffany franchises had all the appeal of an Old Navy clearance bin, with the likes of Indiana Jones and Ethan Hunt swinging back into action for more high-flying adventures only to be greeted with grosses that were decidedly Earthbound. And cinema’s mightiest heroes, from Ant-Man to Aquaman, were told to hang up their tights and tridents as comic book movies suffered a historic collapse at the box office. Marvel, once seen as the movie business’s most indestructible brand, is asking tough questions about its creative direction, while DC Films has brought in new leadership in James Gunn and Peter Safran and tasked them with undertaking a total reboot.

Imax CEO Richard Gelfond says major studios making high profile changes to their tentpole release slates after the resolution of the Hollywood actors strike means 2025 will be very good year for his global big screen network.
“Because some things couldn’t go into production because of the (actors) strike, when the strike settled it was like a land grab for 2025. So our summer late is almost completely booked up for 2025,” Gelfond told the Wells Fargo Tmt Summit on Wednesday.
He looked to Avatar 3 coming out in Christmas 2025, while the summer season that year will see the latest from the Top Gun and Superman franchises also roll out on Imax screens. The film technologies company is also near to nailing down a 2025 slot for Apple’s Brad Pitt highly anticipated Formula One movie directed by Joseph Kosinski, who was behind Top Gun: Maverick.
Gelfond also discussed China’s theatrical box...
