NYC’s messiest Instagram account is typing its “XOXOs” for the last time. “Gossip Girl,” the HBO Max series and sequel to the CW hit of the same name, has been canceled, the streamer announced Thursday. The news comes in the middle of the show’s Season 2 run, which began on December 1 and will conclude January 26.
In a tweet Thursday, showrunner and executive producer Joshua Safran stated he intends to shop “Gossip Girl” to other outlets.
“We are currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill battle, and so if this is the end, at least we went out on the highest of highs,” Safran wrote in his tweet.
The series, which premiered in July 2021 to considerable hype, is a continuation of the original 2007 series of the same name created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Based on the young adult series by Cecily von Ziegesar,...

(Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the series premiere of HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” reboot.)
HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” reboot deviated from its CW predecessor in the most unexpected way possible with its series premiere Thursday — an hour that not only saw the birth of a new Gossip Girl, but actually revealed her identity to viewers in the process. This unveiling is a shocking development, seeing as the original “Gossip Girl” didn’t disclose to fans that Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) was the infamous blogger (voiced by Kristen Bell) until the final episode of its six-season run.
The pilot of the new “Gossip Girl” immediately unveils our new source into the scandalous lives of the Constance/St. Jude’s students as four teachers and faculty members at the school: Kate (Tavi Gevinson), Jordan (Adam Chanler-Borat), Wendy (Megan Ferguson) and Reema (Rana Roy). We know it’s them...

HBO Max’s Gossip Girl update has added Curb Your Enthusiasm alum Megan Ferguson to its cast.
Ferguson will play a character named Wendy in the series, which is set to bow July 8 on the WarnerMedia-owned streaming platform (details of her role weren’t available). The new Gossip Girl follows a different set of characters than the 2007-12 CW series but is set in the same world of wealth and privilege on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Ferguson’s casting marks a reunion with showrunner Joshua Safran; she was a regular in Safran’s Netflix series Soundtrack, which bowed in late 2019.

“Breakups,” as millennial comedian Cat Cohen once said, “are cool because it’s like you have a best friend and then they die.” What do you do after the end of the affair to memorialize what was, and what now isn’t? Natalie Krinsky’s romantic comedy “The Broken Hearts Gallery” doesn’t quite get at the psyche-shattering, soul-reconfiguring effects of a breakup — the exhausting burden it casts on your friends, the face-melting substance abuse, the self-doubt, the social-media stalking in the aftermath. Don’t forget the vomiting.
But what this sweet, fleet-footed little trifle does capture is how to start a whole new you after you and me is no more. This certainly makes for an overly idealistic experience, but “Broken Hearts Gallery” is a far-cry from the algorithm-driven uncanny valleys of romantic human behavior as seen on Netflix’s versions of the same kind of film, and it...

It’s one-and-done for the musical drama series Soundtrack at Netflix. The Internet TV network has canceled the series after one season, Deadline has confirmed.
Soundtrack (fka Mixtape) had previously gone to pilot at Fox before it was picked up to series by Netflix.
The series, which starred Jenna Dewan, Callie Hernandez and Madeleine Stowe, hailed from Quantico creator Josh Safran; Annapurna Pictures; 20th Century Fox TV, which produced the original pilot; and its cable/streaming division Fox 21 TV Studios.
Netflix had ordered a 10-episode first season in July 2018 and it premiered on December 18, 2018.
Written by former Smash showrunner Safran, Soundtrack was described as a romantic musical drama that looked at the love stories connecting a diverse, disparate group of people in contemporary Los Angeles through the music that lives inside their hearts and minds.
Safran executive produced with Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle as well as Ali Krug.

Netflix’s new musical drama “Soundtrack,” from “Smash” executive producer Joshua Safran, is a deeply frustrating entry to the genre. Originally pitched as “Mixtape” for broadcast network TV, “Soundtrack” uses a vague framework of “Love songs are good” to have its characters lip-sync existing songs — by artists ranging from Demi Lovato to Joni Mitchell —at sporadic moments throughout the series. In two intertwining timelines, romantic leads Sam and Nellie — played with verve by Paul James (“Greek”) and Callie Hernandez (“Under the Silver Lake”)— circle each other and express their frustrations to the tune of Imagine Dragons and St. Vincent. Their concerned mother figures Antoinette (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) and Margot (Madeleine Stowe) pace across the screen to Whitney Houston and Dolly Parton. Nellie’s father, Frank (Campbell Scott), fittingly embraces classic dad rock, while Sam’s struggling cousin Dante (Jahmil French) prefers The Weeknd.

‘Easy’ Season 2 Review: Grading Every Episode of Joe Swanberg’s Intimate and Exciting Netflix Series
Joe Swanberg is back! After a fairly under-the-radar Season 1 release in September 2016, Season 2 got the similar low-key marketing treatment before dropping the first day of December.
But don’t take the lack of buzz as a lack of import. Season 1 asked a lot of valuable questions while delivering a beautiful and unique realization of modern Chicago. The anthology approach, with each episode functioning as a standalone short, helped cover a lot of cultural ground, and Season 2 continues that pattern in interesting ways.

While the episodes can certainly stand on their own, many bring back characters from Season 1. Context from earlier episodes isn’t prescient, but it does help, and just like last year, some stories are better than others.
To that end, IndieWire has reviewed each episode individually below and ranked them by their assigned grades.

"Any new progress on the investigation?" Paramount has debuted a second official trailer for Suburbicon, the Coen Brothers dark comedy directed by George Clooney. This premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals recently, and will hit theaters next month for those who still want to see it. Set in 1959 in a "peaceful, idyllic suburban community" that is rattled by a home invasion, a death starts to reveal the town's "dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence". Starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe, Megan Ferguson, Jack Conley, and Oscar Isaac. This new trailer sell this much differently than the first trailer, which is a bit deceptive in what it's showing us. This trailer also has a bunch of quotes from critics, including two from yours truly in my Venice review. I'm happy to support a film I enjoyed quite a bit. Here's the second Us trailer (+ new poster) for George Clooney's Suburbicon,...

"Right now your path looks pretty bleak." Entertainment One in the UK has debuted an official UK trailer for Suburbicon, a new dark comedy written and directed by George Clooney. This film is premiering at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals in just a few weeks, so expect to hear lots of buzz. This looks so damn good, I'm already sold and already ready to just watch and laugh and enjoy it. This is a good trailer but it spoils the amusing reveal at the end with Damon riding away, oh well, no worries. "Welcome to Suburbicon! A town of wonder and excitement." Here's the official UK...

Catching up on a Trailer debut from a few days ago here (we also got a Teaser for mother! yesterday, but there’s a full Trailer coming next week we’ll tackle). This one today is the major Oscar hopeful Suburbicon, coming to us as the latest directorial outing from George Clooney. Not only is Clooney teamed up with his partner Grant Heslov for this one, he also is working off of a script that the Coen Brothers once penned with an eye towards directing. You’ll be able to see this Trailer below, but first, you know the drill here…some discussion is in order. The film is a pitch black crime comedy of sorts. So far, the description for it is simply that a home invasion rattles a quiet family town. The town is the town of Suburbicon, and Gardner (Matt Damon) is a father and husband drawn...

"Nothing like this ever happened here." Paramount has revealed the first official trailer for Suburbicon, a new dark comedy written and directed by George Clooney. This film was just announced this week as a big premiere at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals coming up this fall. The film is set in 1959 in a "peaceful, idyllic suburban community" that is rattled by a home invasion which then begins to reveal the town's "dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence". Starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe, Megan Ferguson, Jack Conley, and Oscar Isaac. This looks totally wild and wacky, like an even darker and crazier Coen Brothers movie (who co-wrote the script so that makes sense). I'm so down for this. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for George Clooney's Suburbicon, direct from YouTube: Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns...the...

The first trailer has been released for the crazy yet fun looking dark comedy Suburbicon. The film was written and directed by George Clooney and, as you'll see, it has a bit of a Coen Brothers flair to it. The movie looks freakin' great! I love the unexpected wild, dark, craziness of it all. This movie is gonna be a lot of fun to watch!
The movie also has an incredible cast that includes Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe, Megan Ferguson, Jack Conley, and Oscar Isaac. Here's a breakdown of the setting and story:
Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns…the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal,...

"We have to take down these perfect moms." Stx Entertainment has debuted a new red band trailer for Jon Lucas & Scott Moore's comedy Bad Moms, about three rebellious moms who decided to fight back against the ever-so-perfect moms in their neighborhood. See the first trailer here. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn stars as the "bad moms", facing off against Christina Applegate, Annie Mumolo, and Jada Pinkett Smith as the "perfect moms". The cast also includes Jay Hernandez, Clark Duke, Oona Laurence and Megan Ferguson. There's just something about this movie that annoys me, it's so absurdly over-the-top and crass I can't see anything about it that's entertaining. But maybe that's just me. Have at it. Since her brilliant transition from Disney star to rebellious teen in Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers,” Selena Gomez continues to surprise. Too bad the same can’t be said for her new movie, “The Fundamentals of Caring,” a saccharine buddy dramedy from writer-director Rob Burnett (best known as the executive producer of “The Late Show with David Letterman”).
“The Fundamentals of Caring” stars Paul Rudd as Ben, a grieving father and failed writer who takes a job as a caretaker for an amusingly surly teenage boy. Not that Trevor, played by a doe-eyed Craig Roberts (“Submarine”), doesn’t have a reason to be surly; he suffers from muscular dystrophy, a disorder that severely impairs his physical abilities but leaves his mind sharp. Ben and Trevor strike up an all-too-likely friendship, each being the only one to tell the other the hard truths.

Selena Gomez is showing off her sassy side. The singer-actress stars in the new indie flick The Fundamentals of Caring as a hitchhiker who befriends the caretaker (Paul Judd) of a wheelchair-bound young man (Craig Roberts). And only E! In the scene, they head to see the deepest man-made quarry pit with another new friend they pick up along the way, a young mom-to-be played by Megan Ferguson. But when Roberts reveals their plans have changed, Gomez isn't having it. Watch the video above to see the exclusive clip. The Fundamentals of Caring is available on Netflix today. "Does any part of you want to see the world?" A second trailer has arrived online (see the first here) for Rob Burnett's indie film The Fundamentals of Caring, which first premiered at Sundance and is hit Netflix later this week. The dark comedy stars Paul Rudd as a depressed guy who becomes a caregiver, and his first job is caring for Trevor, a lonely teen with muscular dystrophy confined to a wheelchair, played by Craig Roberts. The cast includes Selena Gomez, Jennifer Ehle, Megan Ferguson and Frederick Weller. This is a fun film and has some smart comedy, and the performances from Roberts and Rudd are fantastic. It wasn't my favorite out of Sundance, but it's charming and worth watching if you're interested. Rob Burnett, executive producer of The Late Show with David Letterman since 1996, is returning to the world of film for his second feature, the Netflix-distributed, Sundance-closing The Fundamentals of Caring. The film follows Paul Rudd’s attempt to cope with recent loss through a caregiving program. His first client is a quick-witted boy with a timer on his life (Craig Roberts) who falls for a girl on their road trip (Selena Gomez).
We said in our review,”Roberts especially shines as Trevor, continuing his vein of sardonic types he played before in his breakout film, Richard Ayoade’s Submarine. His performance is not about physicality (The Theory of Everything this isn’t), but Burnett’s deadpan script fits his quick-witted delivery like a glove. Rudd is good value as Ben, believably wracked by guilt over his son but also a great foil to Roberts’ bitterness.”

Continuing their steady stream of incredible original programming, Netflix is gearing up for the June 24th release of “The Fundamentals of Caring.”
In the new preview trailer, stars Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Ehle, Megan Ferguson and Frederick Weller all give stunning performances.
Per the synopsis, “This is the story of Ben, a retired writer who becomes a caregiver after suffering a personal tragedy. After 6 weeks of training, Ben meets his first client, Trevor, a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralyzed emotionally, one paralyzed physically, Ben and Trevor take an impromptu road trip to all the places Trevor has become obsessed with while watching the local news, including their holy grail: the World’s Deepest Pit. Along the way, they pick up a sassy runaway and a mother-to-be who help test the pair’s survival skills outside of their calculated existence as they come to understand the...

Closing the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, The Fundamentals of Caring follows Craig Roberts’ wheelchair-bound teenager and his carer, played by Paul Rudd. Rob Burnett's "The Fundamentals of Caring" follows Ben (Paul Rudd), a retired writer who becomes a personal caregiver after suffering a tragedy. His first client is Ben (Craig Roberts), a profane 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy who leads a very regimented life. Together, they take an impromptu road trip to visit the "lamest roadside attractions" that the United States has to offer. Along the way, they pick up a runaway (Selena Gomez) and a soon-to-be mother (Megan Ferguson) who help the pair embrace life-changing experiences outside their wheelhouse and learn about the true meaning of friendship and hope in the face of terrible odds. Paul Rudd and Neighbors alum Craig Roberts get to grips with The Fundamentals of Caring in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming feel-good drama.
Due to makes its bow on the streaming service on June 24, Rob Burnett’s dramedy garnered a healthy amount of buzz during its premiere at Sundance and is the latest indie drama to be scooped up by Netflix – and it’s little wonder why.
Placing Roberts in the role of a crippled 18-year-old, The Fundamentals of Caring tees up a heartfelt dynamic between Trevor and Ben, Paul Rudd’s retired writer seeking a cathartic release from relationship woes and a recent divorce. And so, in an attempt to thrust Trevor out of his mind-numbing comfort zone, the pair plot a road trip to visit a handful of weird and wonderful landmarks across the country, including the World’s Deepest Pit.
