Popular medical drama House has just been added to Hulu on Tuesday (November 7)!
The eight-season Fox series centered on Dr. Gregory House, who is devoid of anything resembling bedside manner and wouldn’t even talk to his patients if he could get away with it. Dealing with his own constant physical pain, he uses a cane that seems to punctuate his acerbic, brutally honest demeanor.
While his behavior can border on antisocial, House is a brilliant diagnostician whose unconventional thinking and flawless instincts afford him widespread respect. An infectious disease specialist, House thrives on the challenge of solving medical puzzles in order to save lives.
The series featured quite the cast over the course of it’s run: Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard, Omar Epps, Jesse Spencer, Lisa Edelstein, Jennifer Morrison, Peter Jacobson, Olivia Wilde, Kal Penn, Amber Tamblyn, Odette Annable and Charlyne Yi.

After decades spent firmly in the zeitgeist, the pop cultural legacy of "Star Trek" shows up in some unexpected places -- like an episode of Guillermo del Toro's horror anthology directed by "Mandy" filmmaker Panos Cosmatos. In a recent interview with Variety, production designer Tamara Deverell described the process of building the set for "The Interview," an episode of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" that takes place largely inside a hazy, orange, retro-futuristic room.
Fans of "Cabinet of Curiosities" will remember "The Interview" as perhaps the show's trippiest installment. The hour stars comedians Eric André, Steve Agee, and Charlyne Yi, plus actress (and future "Rebel Moon" star) Sofia Boutella, actor Michael Therriault, and screen legend Peter Weller. In what appears to be a curious slow-burn experiment, a group of disparate people -- including a psychic, novelist, record producer, and astrophysicist -- are gathered together in a drug-filled mansion...

Production designer Tamara Deverell was tasked with creating eight different periods and working with eight different directors for Netflix’s “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
The anthology series required Deverell, 2020’s artisan award recipient for production design, to tap into her love for building gritty sets and build everything from a brutalist architecture room inspired by her work on “Star Trek: Discovery” to using an old warehouse for an alien autopsy.
Here Deverell breaks down some of her favorite sets from the series.
“Lot 36″
The first episode tells the story of Tim Blake Nelson as Nick Appleton, who purchases the titular Lot 36 from a recently deceased old man and discovers strange items such as a séance table and rare books. However, the Lot also holds dark demonic secrets
What were some initial conversations you had about the set build for this?
That was storage lockers gone crazy. We built the storage lockers.

Created and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is now available to watch in its entirety, as all eight episodes have been released through the Netflix streaming service. And director Vincenzo Natali would like you to know that there is a black and white version of his episode Graveyard Rats on there as well. You just have to go searching for it a little bit.
Natali took to Twitter to inform us, “A reminder: Graveyard Rats is available in glorious Black & White in the ‘Trailers & More’ section of the Netflix Cabinet of Curiosities menu. I like the color version but this is the way I intended it to be viewed. Colin Hoult’s cinematography is gorgeous.“

This review contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities: “The Viewing”
If you’ve seen Panos Cosmatos’ films Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy, you might have already had an idea of what you were in for before you hit play on his Cabinet of Curiosities installment, “The Viewing,” and that’s a wild, surreal ride with you in the passenger seat and no seatbelt. Cosmatos continues to speed down this particular genre avenue, and its one that has intoxicated his burgeoning fan base as the director always puts such a distinctive visual and aural stamp on his projects. There’ll be a woozy atmosphere hogging a fairly straightforward plot, dialogue just vague enough for your confusion to linger throughout, and a retro, claustrophobic and saturated color palette that makes you feel like you’re constantly trying to outrun something bad in a nightmare.
Incredibly, Cosmatos is...

Episodic anthologies in the entertainment age of “content” are a tricky proposition. Crafting unique and compelling narratives is a challenge unto itself, made all the more difficult when creators have to start from scratch every episode… a notion that bucks against modern audiences’ inclination toward serialized stories. If viewers aren’t watching a movie, they want their favorite characters to keep them company for days and days (if not weeks and months). Merely making each episode longer isn’t the answer either, as hourlong anthologies have proven especially hit-or-miss. Where 30-minute entries (like many in “Room 104” and “Roar”) can be quick and cutting, a doubled runtime can result in bloat, banality, or both.
Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. “Black Mirror” became a streaming sensation (albeit after being developed outside of L.A.’s studio system), and “The Twilight Zone” remains the format’s gold standard (released back...

A beloved children’s novel is turned into a charming animation in My Father’s Dragon, which is world premiering at the BFI London Film Festival. Oscar-nominated director Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner) helms a story of childhood friendship based on the 1948 novel by Ruth Stiles Gannett, with animation from Cartoon Saloon and a screenplay by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out). It’s a sweet adventure with appeal for young kids and a starry voice cast including Jacob Tremblay as hero Elmer, and – in one of the film’s more amusing moments – Whoopi Goldberg as a cat.
In the opening scenes, a narrator (Mary Kay Place) introduces her father, Elmer, who had a magical experience some time ago. We meet Elmer when his mother (Golshifteh Farahani) is running a modest but successful retail business, involving her son in the day-to-day workings of the store.

The original "Time Bandits" was likely a pivotal movie for many of our readers growing up, as it helped bring the wackiness and chaos of Terry Gilliam movies to younger audiences. I know that it was certainly my introduction to the director. Now, a brand new generation will be able to experience "Time Bandits" thanks to Taika Waititi.

"If the camera is predatory, then the culture is predatory as well." Kino Lorber has unveiled the official trailer for a documentary film titled Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power, which originally premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. After playing at a festivals around the world, it's ready to open in theaters this October. The film investigates the politics of cinematic shot design, and how this meta-level of filmmaking intersects with the on-going twin epidemics of sexual abuse/assault and employment discrimination against women. It's a deep-dive into patriarchal power, and how it even seeps into every last shot in cinema. Featuring over 175 movie clips from 1896 to 2020. The film also features interviews with an all-star cast of women and non-binary industry professionals discussing all of this, including: Julie Dash, Penelope Spheeris, Charlyne Yi, Joey Soloway, Catherine Hardwicke, Eliza Hittman, Rosanna Arquette. The result is an electrifying call-to-action that will fundamentally change...

Documentarian Nina Menkes is turning her camera on cinema history itself.
Menkes’ “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” centers on the cultural normalization of the exploitative male gaze found in cinema. Using clips from more than 175 films ranging from “Sleeping Beauty” to “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Spring Breakers,” Menkes deconstructs how the visual language of cinema is connected to “employment discrimination against women and an environment of pervasive sexual harassment, abuse, and assault.”
The film premieres October 21 via Kino Lorber at the new Dctv Firehouse Cinema in New York City and the Laemmle in Los Angeles, with a national rollout to follow.
Based on Menkes’ acclaimed talk “Sex & Power: The Visual Language of Cinema,” the film made its world premiere at 2022 Sundance. Award-winning documentarian Menkes argues that shot design is gendered, with “Brainwashed” seeking to illuminate the patriarchal narrative codes that hide within supposedly “classic” set-ups and camera angles, and demonstrates how women are...

In 2021, Juneteenth, the celebration of the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans, was established as a federal holiday, and with new holidays to celebrate, there are new opportunities for holiday movies, of course. From director Dawn Wilkinson (“A Nashville Christmas Carol”) and writers Matt Allen (“Mighty Oak”), Lisa Mathis and Krista Suh, comes “Block Party,” a summer family comedy that’s ostensibly themed around Juneteenth.
The connection to Juneteenth feels tenuous at best, as characters continually name-check the holiday but never stop to explain or discuss the meaning of the celebration. The script assumes that the audience is familiar with the holiday and its importance, which is perhaps a heartening sign that Juneteenth doesn’t need to be explained anymore, but most great holiday films at least touch on the significant themes of the holiday (e.g. “the true meaning of Christmas”).
“Block Party” feels strangely divorced from what Juneteenth actually signifies,...

Many worthy films for all audiences flew under the pop culture radar in 2021, released with some fanfare but overshadowed by current events. Take the animated Connected, for example. Announced by Sony for 2020, it briefly arrived in theaters in April before hitting Netflix under the name The Mitchells vs. the Machines.
Now available in a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD combo pack, the film is well worth your time and attention. First of all, it’s funny and good for the entire family to enjoy together. Second, it has some fine messages underneath the frenetic pace and stuffed visuals.
Rick (Danny McBride) loves nature and is a bit of a technophobe, setting up a conflict with his daughter Katie (Abbi Jacobson), who is about to attend film school. When their visions clash one more time, he cancels her flight and decides to pack the family into their old station wagon and drive across the country.

Netflix says that “The Mitchells Vs. The Machines,” its animated family film, was the streamer’s biggest animated movie it has ever released.
The film that was produced by Sony and originally intended for theatrical release was watched by an estimated 53 million member households in its first 28 days, Netflix said in its earnings report on Tuesday. The film debuted on April 30.
The film has also been highly critically acclaimed, coming from the team behind “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and Nielsen has similarly tracked impressive numbers for the film in its weekly streaming rankings. “The Mitchells” in May became the first movie since “Soul” to lead all streaming movies for a given week, being watched by 853 million viewing minutes at its peak. And it still performs strongly week over week and frequently appears in Netflix’s daily Top 10.

Families watched “The Mitchells” for 853 million minutes during the week of May 3-9, making it the first time an animated film took the top overall spot on Nielsen’s list since “Soul” topped it over Christmas. “Soul” was viewed for 1.6 billion minutes in its first week. The most recent time that an original movie topped the streaming list overall was “Thunder Force” with Melissa McCarthy, which notched 950 million minutes at the start of April.

Charlyne Yi is once again holding Seth Rogen accountable following his recent statement about James Franco. Earlier this week, the 35-year-old actress - who previously accused James of "preying on underage girls" and Seth of enabling abuse - posted a checklist on her Instagram of actions she would like the actor to commit to. The list includes apologizing to "survivors for making their lives even more vulnerable by publicly siding with an abuser," committing to "educating self about coercion, Sa, and how to be a proactive ally," and protecting and hiring survivors.
In the following slides, Charlyne explained why Seth initially siding with James was damaging and why his behavior warrants an apology to survivors, victims, and all those harmed. "Two rich white male celebrities publiclly [sic] teaming up sends thousands of fans to attack & threaten the survivors physically & psychologyically. This not only is dangerous for their mental health,...
