Elvis Presley made a return to the zeitgeist this past year.
On the heels of the Oscar-nominated 2022 drama Elvis, starring Austin Butler, the adult animated series Agent Elvis, featuring a “retro cool” look and the voice of Matthew McConaughey as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, arrived in April on Netflix.
Created by Priscilla Presley and John Eddie, with Eddie and head writer Mike Arnold serving as showrunners, the animated sitcom follows the music icon as he moonlights as a secret agent between performances during the period from 1968 to 1973. “It’s a known fact Elvis wanted to be a secret agent. The whole impetus for the series started from that photo of Elvis going to Richard Nixon and offering his services as an undercover agent,” claims Eddie. “I had always pitched it as Elvis Presley as a secret agent fighting crime, as if directed by Quentin Tarantino.”

“Agent Elvis,” the hand-drawn adult animated Netflix series from Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Fletcher Moules (“Entergalactic”), re-imagines Elvis Presley as a super cool spy in a wild, gory, drugged-out alternate reality. It crosses “Archer” with “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” putting the King square in the crosshairs of everyone from the Manson Family and Howard Hughes to Richard Nixon and Timothy Leary — all while retaining recognizable signposts from Presley’s life, from concert specials to his hatred of Robert Goulet.
There’s also an array of hilarious cameos, including Stanley Kubrick shooting a staged moon landing — guess who ends up in the space suit? — and a young George Lucas getting inspiration for the lightsaber from Hughes’ radioactive urine stream weapon. “Agent Elvis” is so meta that Baz Luhrmann even voices the director of Presley’s final film “Change of Habit.”

The best thing about Netflix’s Agent Elvis, which posits Elvis Presley as a spy within a covert government program, isn’t Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey voicing the rock ‘n’ roll icon. He just sounds like himself, which is funny enough and saves him the trouble of Austin Butler-esque permanent burn-in.
The highlight isn’t the animation, though the Sony Pictures Animation and Titmouse team deliver ample comic book-flavored pizzazz.
It will surprise regular readers that my favorite thing in Agent Elvis isn’t even that Elvis is accompanied by a debauched, sociopathic chimpanzee sidekick — not that I’m complaining that a debauched, sociopathic chimpanzee plays a major role in Agent Elvis.
No, the best thing about Netflix’s Agent Elvis is that no matter how outlandish and ridiculous it is, it’s all true. Ok, fine. It isn’t All true. Probably most of it isn’t true,...

“Elvis had kind of a sick sense of humor,” co-creator Priscilla Presley revealed at a screening for “Agent Elvis” at the Netflix Tudum Theater on March 7. She was joined by co-creator John Eddie and showrunner Mike Arnold for a special Q&a. In the animated series, Elvis Presley trades in his white jumpsuit for a jet pack when he is covertly inducted into a secret government spy program to help battle the dark forces that threaten the country he loves — all while holding down his day job as the King of Rock and Roll. Watch the trailer below.
Despite the wild storylines of each episode, Eddie revealed they’re all “based in some form of Elvis’ life. He said he always wanted to be the hero in the comic book. That was why we made it as opposed to doing a live action thing. We specifically wanted to do animated.

Priscilla Presley is back in the spotlight for her first public appearance since the death of her daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. The 77-year-old posed on the red carpet on March 7 to support the Los Angeles premiere of Netflix's new adult animated series, "Agent Elvis," inspired by the rock 'n' roll icon, also Priscilla's ex-husband.
Additionally, Priscilla participated in a Q&a with "Agent Elvis" cocreator John Eddie and showrunner Mike Arnold, during which she, also as cocreator of the show, explained that she aimed for the series to serve as a way of "introducing Elvis to the youth today, wondering why he was so famous and to see him as a hero," per The Hollywood Reporter.
The event comes nearly two months after Lisa Marie died at age 54 on Jan. 12, which occurred only two days after her and her mother's joint appearance at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards to support "Elvis" star Austin Butler.

If you watched Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" and thought to yourself, "this is good, but I wish Austin Butler was animated and also had a gun and was solving crimes," have we got the series for you! With Elvis fever running wild, the King of Rock and Roll has a new adult animated show due to arrive soon on Netflix, featuring Matthew McConaughey in the voiceover role he was born to play — Elvis Presley, but a super spy. The animation is sharp and snappy, the language and violence certainly aren't for kids, and despite the seemingly ridiculous premise ... "Agent Elvis" looks pretty damn awesome.
The series has been in the works since 2019, back when it was called "Agent King," but with "Agent Elvis" heading our way faster than you can put on a new pair of blue suede shoes, here's everything you need to know before the King enters the building.

Remember when Elvis Presley met Richard Nixon and the president gave the King a badge from the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, the DEA’s predecessor? Netflix’s new animated comedy series “Agent Elvis” takes that surreal premise and runs with it, turning Elvis into a secret agent who travels the world battling threats to the U.S. of A. under the cover of his job as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. It’s like “Archer,” with a Tupelo twist.
On Wednesday, Netflix revealed a trailer for the series, which premieres Friday, March 17, and announced the rest of the voice cast. The King of Rock and Roll has a double life as Elvis Presley gets animated as Agent King on upcoming Netflix series.
Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, earned a black belt in Karate, indulged "Suspicious Minds," and got special agent status from President Nixon. Priscilla Presley will put all these together in the upcoming Agent King, an adult animated comedy series which will run on Netflix, according to Variety.
The series also merges concepts behind both Marvel and DC legends, and the mythology of The Gong Show's Chuck Barris, who may or may not have been an assassin for the CIA, according to the book and movie Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. In Agent King, Elvis will shake his pelvis during working hours but will transform into an undercover agent who keeps America safe.

Netflix is producing an interesting new animated comedy series for adults called Agent King and it will center around Elvis Presley. The series was co-created by Priscilla Presley and John Eddie, and it’s being developed by Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Television and Authentic Brands Group.

I’m 100% on board with this series! This sounds like it could be an incredibly awesome and fun show to watch and Presley had this to say in a statement:
“From the time Elvis was a young boy he always dreamed of being the superhero fighting crime and saving the world — Agent King lets him do just that.

It looks like we might be headed for a Toxic Avenger reboot.
Somehow, against all odds, nobody has managed to reboot The Toxic Avenger yet. Oh, there have been attempts. In 2013, Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to join a Toxic Avenger reboot where he would play Toxie's heroic coach, "The Exterminator." Thankfully, that never happened. More recently, Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon was working with writers Mike Arnold and Chris Poole (who were working off the Steve Pink/DC Mitchell draft that Arnie had been involved with) on another attempt to bring the character back to the big screen.
It would appear that all previous reboots have dissolved like so much flesh in a barrel of radioactive waste, though. Legendary Pictures has picked up the rights to The Toxic Avenger franchise, so it's inevitable that we're going to see a new movie sooner or later. Maybe. After all,...

It's easily one of the biggest cult classic films of all time and Troma Entertainment's The Toxic Avenger has been in the process of being remade for a long time. Producers first got the remake rights back in early 2010, but by the end of that year, director Steve Pink (Hot tub Time Machine) had been hired to write and direct a PG-13 action comedy take on Troma's very R-rated original. Pink wrote the screenplay with Daniel C. Mitchell, their story followed an average teen who joins an environmental club in hopes to impress his crush. Then while investigating a waste plant, he falls into a tub of waste and transforms into a radioactive hero.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was even offered a role in 2013, but it wasn't clear if he would play, and John Travolta was even rumored to be up for a role.

Deadline reports that Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon has signed on to direct The Toxic Avenger remake. Writers Mike Arnold and Chris Poole are rewriting the screenplay from Steve Pink and D.C. Mitchell.
Akiva Goldsman and Charlie Corwin of Weed Road will produce the film alongside Richard Saperstein of Storyscape Entertainment. The Toxic Avenger Creators Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will serve as executive producers on the remake.
The Toxic Avenger was a B-movie horror/comedy that was released in 1984 and told the story of a mop boy named Melvin who works at a local health club. After being humiliated by the cool kids in town, Melvin accidentally falls into a barrel of toxic waste which transforms him into a grotesque monster who becomes the superhero known as The Toxic Avenger.

Because of Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon, moviegoers will never look at groceries the same way. The filmmaker's next project will take him from store aisles to the town of Tromaville, as Vernon is now set to helm the remake of 1984's The Toxic Avenger.
Variety (via Deadline) reports that Vernon will direct The Toxic Avenger remake from a screenplay by Mike Arnold and Chris Poole, who will rewrite a previous remake script penned by D.C. Mitchell and Steve Pink. In addition to co-writing the prior script for the remake, Pink was at one point lined up to direct the film as well.
For those unfamiliar with the beloved Troma film, The Toxic Avenger followed bullied janitor Melvin Ferd, who fell into toxic waste after being pursued by his tormentors, only to rise from certain death and become transformed into a disfigured defender of Tromaville.

Low-budget cult classic The Toxic Avenger is getting a remake, and Conrad Vernon -- who co-directed the raunchy summer hit Sausage Party alongside Greg Tiernan -- is taking the helm. The original Toxic Avenger is pure schlock, but it's schlock with a heart, and I happen to get a real kick out of the film, which remains camp purveyor Troma Entertainment's signature title (company co-founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz are serving as executive producers here). According to the Deadline report, Vernon's version is being billed as a "re-imagining" that will be "a more grounded and mainstream telling of the story," which frankly seems to be missing the point of what made the scuzzy 1984 original so special to begin with. That said, Vernon did help create one of the most subversive studio films of the last several years, so as "Hollywood" directors go, he's more well-equipped than most to...

Thousands of people rallied late Monday in U.S. cities including Los Angeles and New York to passionately but peacefully protest a grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer who killed a black 18-year-old in Ferguson, Missouri. They led marches, waved signs and shouted chants of "hands up, don't shoot," the refrain that has become a rallying cry in protests over police killings across the country. The most disruptive demonstrations were in St. Louis and Oakland, California, where protesters flooded the lanes of freeways, milling about stopped cars with their hands raised in the air. Activists had...

The only time the words Epic Fail could be considered a good thing for a movie production company, is when they are accompanied by the disclaimer that it is actually an Ed Helms movie. The actor – beloved for his giggle-inducing turns in The Office and The Hangover franchise – helped to develop the original idea for the action comedy, and will also star in it.
Detailing the exploits of a somewhat unusual Special Forces team, the film follows the group as they play to their strengths – excessive dysfunction and firepower – to save America, under the leadership of “the only soldier more badass and moustachioed than a Navy Seal: The Walrus.”
Nicky Weinstock from Invention Films will produce, with colleague Whitney Thomas as Executive Producer. They will work alongside Ed Helms and Michael Falbo of Pacific Electric Picture Company – launched by Helms in 2013 – with Erik Feig, Matthew Janzen and James Myers of Lionsgate overseeing proceedings.

Community, Season 4, Episode 7: “Economics of Marine Biology”
Written by Tim Saccardo
Directed by Tricia Brock
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
The last three or four episodes of Community have settled into a pattern that we have to assume is the new normal for the show. They are primarily emotionally, rather than comedically, driven, and a primary focus seems to be Jeff’s relationship with his father. This is particularly true of tonight’s episode and the Thanksgiving episode, but it also factored heavily into the Halloween episode. This works, to the extent that it does, because the show seems to be developing a feel for the characters. The other aspect to these episodes, that is far less effective (and were it effective it might help to offset the show’s general humor deficit this season), is Abed’s attempt to mold the narrative via pop culture references.

Community, Season 4, Episode 6: “Advanced Documentary Filmmaking”

It’s probably unfair to keep comparing Community’s fourth season to the three that proceeded it. At this point, it has become painfully clear that this is a very different show. Yet it would be hard to argue that the show isn’t inviting those comparisons. That is clearly case with tonight’s episode, a sequel to two previous episodes that had been scripted by Megan Ganz. The surprise twist this week is that while it may not up to the standards of those episodes, “Advanced Documentary Filmmaking” is not doing them a disservice.
