As directorial head-to-heads go, Jack Huston versus Stanley Kubrick isn’t anyone’s idea of a fair fight. But that’s exactly the clash the actor and Hollywood scion sets up for himself in his directorial debut “Day of the Fight” — named for Kubrick’s famous 1951 documentary short of the same title, and likewise following an Irish-American boxer through his daily New York routine, in the hours leading up to a climactic evening match. At 108 minutes to Kubrick’s 12, Huston’s fiction feature has bulk on its side, which isn’t quite the same as weight: Padding out its episodic day-in-the-life structure with a stakes-raising melodramatic backstory, “Day of the Fight” lunges for the tear ducts while never quite ringing true, rooted less in real life than in the tradition of countless underdog boxing dramas that have gone before.

Fresh out of its world premiere at TIFF, the Anna Kendrick-directed thriller Woman of the Hour has been sold to Netflix for a staggering eight figures, Variety reports this week.
Variety details, “The streamer is paying in the $11 million range for the ripped-from-the-headlines thriller, making it the first major sale of the festival. The deal covers the U.S. and several international territories including France, Italy, Japan and South Korea.”
Meagan Navarro explains in her four-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “Anna Kendrick takes aim at the true crime serial killer story in her feature directorial debut, Woman of the Hour. A charming, kitschy ’70s set exploration of gender dynamics quickly gives way to an unnerving, suspenseful stranger-than-fiction tale of serial killer and rapist Rodney Alcala and his bizarre appearance as a bachelor on “The Dating Game.” Kendrick’s incisive vision, blending horror and humor with nonlinear storytelling, makes for an unshakable debut.

Last year, Anna Kendrick starred in Mary Nighy’s disquieting drama of abuse Alice, Darling. The actress played a woman undone by her partner’s psychological manipulations, pulling from her own experiences in an abusive relationship to shape the character. Her performance — sensitive, gripping — sustained the film’s atmosphere of dread.
In Woman of the Hour, Kendrick builds on the work she started in Alice, Darling — but now she is also behind the camera for this unnerving dramatization of serial killer Rodney Alcala’s appearance on a dating game show while in the midst of his murder spree. Woman of the Hour, which premiered at TIFF before its Netflix acquisition, is an ambitious attempt to subvert true-crime genre expectations by giving voice to the survivors and victims of Alcala’s rampage.

Almost every woman has a story: A stranger who followed her through a parking garage. A cab driver who asked uncomfortably personal questions. A date who became frighteningly obsessive. A friend who wouldn’t take no for an answer. The frightening banality of these events is the engine that drives “Woman of the Hour,” the directorial debut from actress Anna Kendrick.
Based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala — who was convicted in 1980 for the murders of seven women and girls, but is suspected of killing more than 100 — “Woman of the Hour” is a more mainstream study of the tension between heterosexual desire and implied violence also evoked in Jane Campion’s “In the Cut.” Unlike that film, however, “Woman of the Hour” leaves the erotics of this dilemma unexplored from the female point of view. The women in this film are not trying to square their attraction...

The logline of a serial killer and rapist taking part in a television dating game show sounds like a high-concept pitch so fabricated it couldn’t possibly be founded in any veracity. Yet, in 1979, Rodney Alcala––whose victims are believed to be as many as 130––was a bachelor on The Dating Game. For her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick expands the 30 minutes of airtime into an inquiry of misogyny and the everyday silencing of women, exploring both Alcala’s shocking murders and the story of a fledging actress hoping for a big break. With a careful threading of humor and horror, it’s an ambitious, slightly strained gamble that Kendrick mostly manages with a formally precise vision and script that doesn’t rely on platitudes.

For her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick chose a particularly daunting task in tackling the story of the notorious serial killer Rodney Alcala, who staged a terrifying murder spree in the ’70s in which he is thought to have killed upwards of 130 people. The center of Kendrick’s movie, Woman of the Hour, focuses on his appearance in plain sight on a 1978 episode of ABC’s The Dating Game, in which he was the bachelor that contestant Cheryl Bradshaw wound up choosing to go on a date with, not knowing that this was a period in the middle of his murderous spree.
ABC’s 20/20 devoted a full hour in May 2021 to the story of the cold-blooded killer who died in incarceration, but Kendrick’s film version has more on its mind that just the facts. It had its world premiere Friday as a Special Presentation at the Toronto Film Festival.

Jack Huston’s directorial debut “Day of the Fight” will make its North American premiere as the opening film for the 46th Mill Valley Film Festival on Oct. 5. The film debuted at the Venice Film Festival, where Huston was honored with Variety’s Breakthrough Director Award.
“Day of the Fight” stars Michael Pitt, Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci and Nicolette Robinson. It follows Pitt as Mikey, a formerly renowned boxer who, after being released from prison, is gearing up for his first fight at none other than Madison Square Garden. The film tracks Mikey throughout the day leading up to this momentous comeback as he visits various influential people in his life, including his ex-wife (Robinson), trainer (Perlman), best friend (John Magaro) and his ailing father (Pesci).
“After a fight for the ages,” the film’s description reads, “A twist of events reveals that this day was never really about boxing for Mikey.

Actor Jack Huston makes his directorial debut with the drama “The Day of the Fight,” starring Michael Pitt, in Venice’s Horizons Extra. The black and white film, set in the early 1980s, follows Mikey (Pitt) through his day as he prepares for a comeback fight at Madison Square Garden that night. But Mikey is preparing for something much bigger, as the screenplay – written by Huston – delves into his past, his relationships and all the pain, sorrow and joy they bring.
He visits his ex-wife (Nicolette Robinson), trainer (Ron Perlman), best friend (John Magaro) and, in one showstopping scene, his father (played by Joe Pesci), who’s been cut down by dementia and can’t talk or even move on his own, in a nursing home. Pesci uses only his eyes to convey emotions — arguably a bold play by a rookie filmmaker to use the famously animated actor in such a subtle way.

Actor Jack Huston says two creative sparks convinced him to make his feature directing debut with boxing drama Day of the Fight. The first concerned the premise; the second, his star.
“Several years ago, I was watching Stanley Kubrick’s first film, a documentary short he shot in 1951, also called Day of the Fight,” Huston says. The film famously follows the great Irish American boxer Walter Cartier over the course of an ordinary day as he prepares for a 10 p.m. title bout.
“It’s this amazing glimpse into the real life of a boxer,” Huston explains. “He eats breakfast, he goes to church, he visits his twin brother, he goes around town — and it’s all leading up to a big prize fight. I remember thinking, ‘What a wonderful premise for a deeper narrative to develop.’ As we follow our boxer through his day and meet the people in his world,...

With no official film market and a more laid-back attitude than Cannes, Berlin or Toronto, Venice has never been the go-to festival for movie deals.

Exclusive: Daniel Zovatto is set to co-star opposite Anna Kendrick in the true crime thriller The Dating Game, which Kendrick is also directing. Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is behind the film with Kendrick also producing. Kathryn Gallagher, Nicolette Robinson, Kelley Jakle and Autumn Best. Production is currently under way in Vancouver.
The script is from a Black List script by Ian MacAllister McDonald and is based on the stranger-than-fiction true story of Cheryl Bradshaw, who was a bachelorette on the hit 70s TV matchmaking show The Dating Game and chose handsome and funny bachelor number one, Rodney Alcala. But behind Alcala’s charming façade was a deadly secret: he was a psychopathic serial killer.
AGC Studios is fully financing and co-producing The Dating Game with J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules for BoulderLight Pictures and Roy Lee and Miri Yoon for Vertigo Entertainment.

Halle Berry and Van Hunt took their romance public at the 2021 Oscars, and damn, do they look good together! The 54-year-old actress and 51-year-old singer-songwriter made their red carpet debut at the award show in Los Angeles on Sunday night, posing for the cameras together before cozying up inside Union Station to enjoy the show. They both dressed to the nines for the occasion - Halle paired her new microbob haircut with a dreamy purple Dolce and Gabbana gown, while Van looked dapper as ever in a navy velvet suit.
To refresh your memory on Halle and Van's relationship, the two have been linked since September 2020 and certainly haven't been shy about proclaiming their love for one another on social media. Last month, Halle shared a sweet Instagram message to celebrate her man's birthday, writing, "I only wish I'd known you sooner so I could have loved you longer!" Before that,...

Leslie Odom Jr. and Nicolette Robinson looked like royalty when they stepped out at Sunday night's Oscars. The couple - who welcomed their second child, son Able Phineas, in March - were an absolute vision. Leslie wore an all-gold suit, while Nicolette stunned in a gorgeous Zuhair Murad gown. The Academy Awards marked the couple's first public appearance since becoming a family of four. Leslie and Nicolette are also parents to their daughter, Lucille, who turned 4 earlier this month.
It was a big night for Leslie; not only did he dazzle us with a breathtaking performance of "Speak Now" during the Oscars preshow, but he was also nominated for best original song for "Speak Now" and best supporting actor for his portrayal of soul singer Sam Cooke in One Night in Miami.

The Golden Globe nominations weren’t bad in terms of spreading the wealth to actors and filmmakers who aren’t just white men, but their Best Picture races were mostly a whitewash. It was a different story when the Screen Actors Guild announced their nominees on February 4. Check out the complete list of nominees here.
As is often the case, they were more inclusive than a lot of other awards groups in terms of recognizing Bipoc actors (their recent winners include “Hidden Figures” and “Black Panther”). But while the Golden Globes had predominantly white Best Picture nominees, the SAG Awards have overwhelmingly male nominees counted among the best film ensemble casts of the year.
SEETop 6 SAG Awards film nomination surprises include Amy Adams, ‘Minari,’ Jared Leto (again!) …
“Da 5 Bloods” is a nominated drama about a group of Black Vietnam vets trying to recover their lost squad commander and a treasure they left behind.

On the heels of the nominations for the Golden Globes and the release of the BAFTA longlist, the Screen Actors Guild Awards have weighed in on the best films and performances of the season. Critics awards be damned, SAG will do what they want to do.
Overall, the nominations provided not as many jaw-droppers as we’ve seen in normal years. Chadwick Boseman made history by scoring four nominations on the film side in one year — two individual noms for his performances in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Da 5 Bloods,” and the others as part of the ensembles.
Heavily male casts dominated the ensemble categories. A24’s “Minari” has the most women represented in its cast with Yeri Han, Noel Kate Cho and supporting actress nominee Yung-Jun Youn. Amazon Studios’ “One Night in Miami” from Regina King, the only female-directed film to make the lineup, has two women among its cast,...

Updated with full list: The nominations for the 27th SAG Award were announced Thursday in a virtual ceremony featuring Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs reading off nominees in 13 film and TV categories honoring the best acting of the past year.
Much like it did at the Golden Globes the day before, Netflix led the way with 30 total nominations. The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture ensemble race features three Netflix dramas: Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Trial of the Chicago 7 along with A24’s Minari and Amazon Studios’ One Night In Miami. Outside of Chicago 7 it is a fully new slate of films from the admittedly apples-to-oranges Best Motion Picture lists set by the Golden Globes on Wednesday.
Last year, Parasite won the film ensemble award, pushing it down the road to the eventual Best Picture Oscar.

"You need to understand what is at stake here." Amazon Prime Video has debuted a second official trailer for One Night in Miami, the outstanding film marking the narrative directorial debut of actress Regina King. What happens when Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke all find themselves in the same room? This is a fictional account of an evening in Miami in the 1960s, bringing together four greats who talk about their life and their accomplishments. Starring Eli Goree as Cassius Clay (aka Muhammad Ali), Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, Leslie Odom Jr. as Sam Cooke, Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown; along with Lance Reddick, Christian Magby, Joaquina Kalukango, and Nicolette Robinson. This premiered to rave reviews at the Venice, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals last year, and it's one of my favorites. Expecting this to end up with tons of awards & noms this season. Available on Prime Video soon.

Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. is taking no chances. He’s isolating himself from his pregnant wife and daughter after being potentially exposed to Covid-19 after appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Dec. 9. DeGeneres announced she had tested positive for coronavirus on Dec. 10.
Odom Jr. told the Today show’s Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager today via an online connection that he’s isolating to spare his wife, Nicolette Robinson, and three-year-old daughter, Lucy.
“First and foremost, I hope Ellen is well. I haven’t spoken to her, obviously I hope she’s doing okay,” Odom said. “We’re getting our tests every day for the next 10 days, and quarantining from each other. The virus can affect pregnant ladies differently, so anywhere, we’re doing our best. I’ve got my mask in the house. You know, I’m double-masking in the house.
