Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

“Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Saltburn,” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” have won the top feature-film awards at the 28th annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards, which were held on Saturday in Hollywood.
“Oppenheimer” won for period film, “Poor Things” for fantasy, “Saltburn” for contemporary and “Spider-Man” for animated film.
“Poor Things” was considered a bit of a surprise winner given that “Barbie” was also nominated the category, and winners Shona Heath and James Price said in their acceptance speech that they were not expecting the win. The victory might put them closer to a victory at next month’s Oscars, where “Poor Things” has 11 nominations.
In the television categories, awards went to “Succession,” “The Great,” “Reservation Dogs,” “The Last of Us,” “Beef,” “Frasier,” “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and the 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The first three titles were honored for their final seasons on TV.

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. Production designers had their hands full the past year, recreating everything from an 18th century palace large enough for indoor badminton games to retro kitchens that looked like they were straight out of the 1970s. To achieve their period-accurate sets, they consulted books, photos and guild archives.
For the third season of “The Great,” production designer Francesca Di Mottola a built a “gigantic games room where anything could happen and served many different purposes,” horse breeding among them. The production designer began scouting locations in the U.K., where the black comedy about Catherine the Great is filmed, but none quite fit what she was looking for, so she built the room on a soundstage.
The room, which first appeared in episode 3 of the Hulu series, had high ceilings and paneled walls with timber all around. It needed to be large enough for parties in addition to badminton games and horse breeding.

“It’s story and daydreaming,” says “Severance” production designer Jeremy Hindle about his favorite part of the creative process. “Literally daydream everything that you could possibly daydream first without any budget or any other conversation. Just be free.” We talked to Hindle as part of our “Meet the Experts” panel of Emmy-nominated production designers along with Francesca Di Mottola (“The Great”), Bill Groom (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Gianna Costa (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) and Bo Welch (“Schmigadoon!”). For Costa, the joy of production design is “going on deep dives, which is very easy for me to do.” She loves “finding very interesting things to pull into a set … I have so many folders of images, it’s ridiculous, but I could spend hours upon hours finding cool references.” Groom is also partial to the early...

“The Great” takes place in 18th century Russia during the reign of Peter III (Nicholas Hoult) and then Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) after she overthrew him. But the show is very much a revisionist history, and that extends to the visual details. “The palace that we built from scratch is inspired by so many different palaces all around the world,” explains production designer Francesca Di Mottola. We talked with Di Mottola as part of our “Meet the Experts” panel of Emmy-nominated production designers. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Being really wide with our research” is “a great source of inspiration,” Di Mottola adds. “There’s always something in the script that will spark the initial research.” Kicking off those scripts for season two was Catherine’s coup against Peter, which left the royal palace in chaos. “We literally had to rebuild part of the palace to be able to tackle the destruction.

If it wasn’t enough for The Great to be Emmy-nominated for its costumes, costume designer Sharon Long earned praise from her stars too. “The Gilded Age” production designer Bob Shaw didn’t want to go overboard as he gave the grand home of Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) a “lived-in” feeling. He hung portraits on top of one another and used patterns on the wallpaper, the curtains and the chairs — all of this to show old money. “The layering is what gave that sense that they had lived there for 20 years,” says Shaw.

The food is a major plot point in the second season of Hulu’s acclaimed bawdy historical comedy “The Great,” starring Elle Fanning as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult as Peter. Vegetarians may have little appetite for the spreads served in the comedy that run the gourmet scale from a whole pig to a puny rat. During a recent Variety zoom on the series, host Jazz Tangcay admitted “it’s impossible to watch the season without feeling hungry.” “Wow, my favorite subject,” exclaimed Fanning, adding that series creator, show runner and executive producer Tony McNamara is the biggest foodie ever.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Hulu, for this edition we look at how composer Nathan Barr, costume designer Sharon Long, and production designer Francesca Di Mottola created a foundation to hold up the singular tone of “The Great.”
The second season of “The Great” starts at a crossroads. The Hulu series, loosely based on the real life of Russian Empress Catherine the Great, ended its first season with a pregnant Catherine (Elle Fanning) staging a coup against her husband Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). In real life, Peter was dead less than a month later. But “The Great” bills itself as only “occasionally true,” and so Hoult’s cheerful psychopath sticks around, a perfect embodiment of the show’s twin axes of humor and darkness, which can shift...

The delicious words of writer and series creator Tony McNamara are what drew Elle Fanning to star as the titular Empress of Russia, Catherine, in Hulu’s series “The Great.” In this wild comedy, Fanning turns Catherine into a modern feminist icon up against the foul-mouthed royal boys’ club led by Peter III (Nicholas Hoult), a misogynistic dolt who she’s been forced to marry to escape a dreary life in Prussia.
Fanning said that coming into the role, she didn’t know much about the Empress of Russia, except of course for that rumor that Catherine died while trying to have sex with a horse. “Sadly, that is all I knew,” she said. “Tony’s script isn’t the blueprint for everything that happened and is not a historical documentary. But he’s done a lot of research on Catherine and taken out the bits that would service him.

When it came to designing the court of Peter III in Hulu’s “The Great,” which premieres May 15, production designer Francesca di Mottola carefully avoided the style of the Versailles-like Russian Winter Palace. “We wanted to invent our world for the show,” she says.
Created by Tony McNamara, “The Favourite” screenwriter, the show focuses on the rise of Catherine the Great (played by Elle Fanning) as she meets Peter (Nicholas Hoult) to become the longest-reigning female sovereign in Russian history. Staying true to McNamara’s style, the story mixes satire and comedy with drama.
For di Mottola, the set design originated in close collaboration with the art department. Initial ideas and mood boards that she had created were turned into technical drawings that were then constructed as sets at 3 Mills Studio in the U.K. While most of the interior sets were built on soundstages, Hever Castle and Hatfield House...
