It’s the end of the world, and Mulligan has turned the apocalypse into one big joke.
Created by 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alums Sam Means and Robert Carlock, the animated comedy series about Matty Mulligan — the everyman who becomes president after Earth is destroyed by aliens — is getting a Part 2. The upcoming 10 episodes include a party cruise ship full of new characters, lavish musical numbers, guest stars, and a newly invented meat substitute that takes on a (terrible) personality.
Means and Carlock are frequent collaborators of Tina Fey — who also happens to voice Dr. Farrah Braun, the last scientist on Earth — which means they’re experienced in packing half-hour episodes with jokes on jokes. “It’s the kind of show we’ve been writing for years — 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt, Great News,” says Means, “but with the palette and the scope that you can...

Earth gets rebooted after a foiled alien attack leads to a second chance for humanity — if new President Matty Mulligan (Nat Faxon) can get out of his own way on Netflix’s new adult animated comedy, “Mulligan.” It’s from the creative minds behind “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “30 Rock” — co-showrunners Robert Carlock and Sam Means and executive producer Tina Fey — who are well-versed in strange second chances and unpredictable relationships.
“Mulligan” concerns a group of rag-tag survivors, including Mulligan (Nat Faxon), a dopey everyman from Boston; beauty queen Lucy (Chrissy Teigen), who has a mid-invasion fling with Matty and becomes First Lady; conniving Vice President Cartwright Lamarr (Dana Carvey); historian Simon Prioleu (Sam Richardson); military super scientist Dr. Farrah Braun (Fey); and imprisoned alien general Axatrax (Phil Lamarr).
The mission statement was: Everything gets destroyed, but humanity has a chance to learn from the mistakes of the past. “So...

Mulligan is an animation series created by Robert Carlock and Sam Means.
A hilarious animated series with adult characters very full of short-temper, meanness and irony not too contained. Mulligan is one of those series that, with a silly plot, is dedicated to dishing out “justice and humor” everywhere with tons of irony, parodies and metaphorical slapstick for everyone and everything.
Remember when the Simpsons were outstanding, and Homer would just blurt out whatever came into his head? It gave rise to a whole saga of series from which Mulligan openly drinks, that animation for adults that has given such good results and that is still in great shape, with its mix of quick humor, intelligent and full of irony.
A parody of absolutely everything that comes its way, especially politics.
Well, as I said, justice and humor.

The ninth annual SeriesFest, an annual television-centric event held in Denver, kicks off Friday with a slightly abbreviated schedule in light of the writers strike. Per WGA rules, writers are not allowed to make “promotional appearances” at film festivals or at “For Your Consideration” Emmy events. Already, a number of FYC showcases have either been canceled, or continued on but with just a screening, no panel, due to the strike.
SeriesFest becomes the first festival to be impacted by the strike. This year’s event takes place from May 5 to May 10, which now happens to coincide with the early days of the strike. As a result, showrunners have opted out of a handful of panels, while screenings of many new and returning shows will now take place without talent/showrunner Q&As. It could be an early peak at the pivot that may have to take place with other upcoming festivals,...

Do you ever sit and think about the early days of the United States of America when the office of the presidency was typically held by whoever was the greatest war hero at the time, and how that's a truly banana-pants line of thinking? Well, that's kind of the premise behind "Mulligan," the new adult animation series heading to Netflix from "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" co-creator Robert Carlock and writer Sam Means.
The show has been in the works since 2020, and centers on Earth after aliens invade (and destroy) most of the planet. Now, it's up to the survivors to rebuild society, providing humanity a second chance to do things better than were done before or watch as history repeats itself and humanity turns to crap again.
In the first of many baffling decisions, working-class Bostonian Matty Mulligan (Nat Faxon) is named the new leader after putting an end to the invasion.

The 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Comedy Writing has 195 episode submissions, which means there will be seven nominees. As a reminder, last year’s winner was the pilot of “Hacks”, beating out the pilots of “The Flight Attendant” (Steve Yockey), “Girls5Eva” (Meredith Scardino) and “Ted Lasso”, along with the “PEN15” episode “Play” (Maya Erskine) and the “Ted Lasso”episode “Make Rebecca Great Again”.
Last year, an argument could be made that “Hacks” prevailed due to “Ted Lasso” having two episodes in the category and splitting its own votes. This scenario could repeat as the former only entered its season finale “The One, The Only” by the same three writing champs and “Ted Lasso” submitted both “Rainbow” (Bill Wrubel) and “No Weddings and a Funeral” (Jane Becker).

Makowsky, who went to school in the district and met one of the key figures, Frank Tassone, as a child, visited his former high school and spoke to a few teachers there. Then he re-read and optioned Robert Kolker’s New York magazine piece on the case, which morphed into HBO’s Emmy-nominated “Bad Education.”
And Makowsky is hardly alone: All five of this year’s television movie nominees are adapted, to some extent — Netflix’s “American Son” from the Broadway play of the same name; Netflix’s “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: These Old Bones” from Parton’s 2002 song “These Old Bones”; and the same streamer’s “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend,...

In the series finale of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” it looked like our red-headed heroine had gotten her life mostly sorted out by turning her experiences into a successful children’s book. Unfortunately for her (but luckily for fans of the show), she had one final challenge to face in Netflix’s interactive movie “Kimmy vs. The Reverend.” This is also good news for the cast and creators behind the series, since they have another shot at finally nabbing their first Emmy win.
See Ellie Kemper Interview: ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend’
Unlike co-creator Tina Fey’s previous show, “30 Rock,” which won Best Comedy Series three years in a row, “Kimmy Schmidt” never took the coveted award despite receiving nominations four years in a row. In fact, it never won a single Emmy out of 18 nominations. Fortunately it faces a much different field this time around. Because of the special’s unique format,...

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” ended its regular series run in early 2019, but creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock wasted little time in reuniting the gang for another absurd comic adventure. “Kimmy vs. the Reverend” arrived May 12 not just as a continuation of the original series, but as Netflix’s second interactive special, following the choose-your-own-path “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” So what do critics think of this new story — or stories?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 77 based on seven reviews counted thus far: six positive, one somewhat mixed and none outright negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews simply as positive or negative and not on a sliding scale like MetaCritic uses, it is rated 90% fresh based on 21 reviews, only two of which are deemed negative. There’s a long tradition in film and TV comedy of the “alt,” where writers come up with multiple jokes for the same moment in the script, wait for the actors to perform them all on camera, then decide which to keep and which ones to cut. So if, say, the characters are talking about someone’s favorite food, the writers might come up with a long list of ridiculous foods and see which one gets the best reaction. Some sitcoms employ writers whose sole job is to come up with alts.

For as intriguing as innovations in TV structure are, the first question I had about “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” doing an “interactive” special was simply, “….why?” For as long as books and games and even YouTube playlists have indulged “choose your own adventure” style storytelling, which gives its audience the illusion of free will while picking between prewritten options to shift the plot, television’s never quite been able to crack it. Before streaming, there was no way to let TV viewers drive the story; afterward, streaming networks still largely stuck to preexisting TV structure, sans commercial breaks. Even “Bandersnatch,” Netflix’s first stab at the format via its technological nightmare drama “Black Mirror,” mostly uses an interactive interface to unfurl a series of disturbing taunts rather than compelling narratives.
With “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend,” Netflix is trying again with a starkly different approach than its “Black Mirror” stab.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we’re about to start production on an all-new Interactive Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt special, set to debut on Netflix in 2020,” Fey said in announcing the news at the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Fysee panel tonight.

Netflix did not deliver with the first teaser for the upcoming final season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” it Digiorno-ed.
The 50-second video, released Thursday, reimagines the Ellie Kemper-led series as a ’90s sitcom called “Magic Boy,” starring Titus (Tituss Burgess) as the titular boy, obviously. It even has a theme song and some rad opening credits, because, of course, it does.
Yes, it’s Titus’ world and Kimmy (Kemper), Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) and Lillian (Carol Kane) are just living in it.

Netflix and Uni TV declined comment.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the first ongoing original half-hour comedy series to debut on Netflix, has been among the streaming giant’s most acclaimed shows.
