Growing up, I always recognized that Ramona Fradon’s artwork was different, curvier and softer in many ways than Gil Kane or Carmine Infantino. But you couldn’t help but like her open, appealing storytelling and characters. Her artistic touch on Metamorpho and later Super Friends were perfect while she was badly miscast on things like Freedom Fighters and even selected issues of The Brave and the Bold.
From the legion of writers and artists working in the first two generations of comics, Ramona was one I had never had the chance to meet or speak with. It was therefore serendipitous when Dynamite Entertainment invited me to edit The Art of Ramona Fradon which is a visual showcase for her work and was an extended conversation between the artist and fellow creator Howard Chaykin. Chaykin spoke with her on numerous occasions and the raw transcript needed to be shaped which is what I did.

Not many actors appreciate being compared to puppets, and yet Oscar nominee Melissa Leo says she owes her entire career to the worlds of make-believe she enjoyed growing up down the street from Peter Schumann’s Bread and Puppet Theater in New York City. “I was a child, but I could see that we were all working together, suspending disbelief, creating truth in imaginary circumstances,” she says. “The curtain would lift, and we made a real world out of nothing at all. That has guided my life, for sure.”
Now 50 and nominated for a second Oscar for her uncompromising, full-blooded turn opposite Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg in David O. Hollywoodnews.com: “Oh geez, O’Connell and McGee? It sounds like a law firm that would be indicted and shut down within minutes.”
That’s how character actor Jack McGee kick started our phone interview on behalf of David O. Russell’s “The Fighter,” the Oscar-nominated drama that casts McGee as Mark Wahlberg’s father figure, George Ward.
McGee has enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood. He made his quiet debut as a bar patron in 1985’s “Turk 182!,” then went on to contribute to the “Lethal Weapon” franchise, Bill Murray’s “Scrooged,” “Basic Instinct,” “Backdraft” and the legendary “Showgirls.”
Television addicts might recognize McGee from his recurring roles on Denis Leary’s firefighter drama “Rescue Me,” though he also appeared on such popular programs as “Chicago Hope,” “NYPD Blue,” and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” over the years.

The SAG Awards are here! It's a night to honor the actors who bring films to life with their great performances - performances that make us laugh, cry, and cringe at times.
Colin Firth is expected to win in the best acting category for his magnificent performance in The King's Speech. Bale is likely going to win best supporting actor for his role in The Fighter.
Of course, in the best actress category, Natalie Portman is favored to win for her chilling performance in Black Swan.
It would be surprising if any of these actors don't actually take home the trophy for their iconic performances.
It's interesting to note that all of last year's winners - Jeff Bridges for "Crazy Heart," Sandra Bullock for "The Blind Side," Mo'nique for "Precious" and Christoph Waltz for "Inglourious Basterds" — went on to win at the Oscars.
Could be a good indicator for the Oscars this year too.

With The Fighter continuing to impress audiences in theatres, and with awards season getting underway, a season in which The Fighter will be showing up a lot, we thought we would take some time to talk to one of the stars from the film, Jack McGee, who plays George Ward, Micky Ward's father, in the film. Hailing from South Bronx, New York, Mr. McGee is not only an actor, but also a colon cancer survivor and in 1977, he joined the New York City Fire Department. His first major role came in 1985 in the film Turk 182. Since then, he has made many notable appearances in both film and television. You may know him from a number of roles, including but not limited to, Chief Jerry Reilly in FX's Rescue Me, the gun store owner in Crash, Terry from 21 and of course, George Ward in The Fighter.

The Fighter
Directed by: David O. Russell
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, Amy Adams
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: December 17, 2010 (Limited)
Plot: Based on a true story, struggling boxer “Irish” Micky Ward (Wahlberg) attempts to give it a real shot, but his brother (Bale) who helps train him, is dealing with his own demons.
Who’S It For? This is a film that will be nominated for awards. It’s a drama with some dysfunctional comedy from the Irish family. It’s not a hardcore sports movie, but you’ll get caught up in the action.
Expectations: I heard great things about Bale’s performance, then again both Brad Pitt and Matt Damon were rumored for that part, so it’s been around. In general, I trust Russell, Bale and Adams. Wahlberg is hit (The Departed) and miss (The Happening).

Today the nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was released. The King’s Speech and The Fighter received the most nominations, with four each. Thankfully the Guild seems to know what they are doing unlike The Golden Globes who pretty much screwed up all the nominations.
The nominees here are usually a very strong indication of how the acting award nominees will play out at the Oscars. King’s Speech has long been an Oscar favourite, but David O. Russell’s The Fighter has gained considerable steam in the past few weeks. Last year, 19 out of 20 SAG nominees went to the Oscars as well so you can be sure that The Fighter and King’s Speech will get a best picture nomination. The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on January 20th. See the complete list below.

The Screen Acors Guild has released their award nominations for their upcoming 17th annual award ceremony, which will take place on January 30, 2011.
There are some great nominations here. My favorite picks include Christian Bale for his role in The Fighter, Natalie Portman in her role in Black Swan, and Jesse Eisenberg for his role in The Social Network. As much as I love most of these films, I'm surprised that Inception is no where to be seen. That was one of the best films of the year and it seems to be escaping a lot of the nominations in all the award ceremonies this year.
Check out the list of Film and TV nominations below and tell us what your favorite are!

Okay, totally kidding about the Colfer Lifetime Achievement Award thing - that will be going to Ernest Borgnine. But does it seem to you that the kid who plays Kurt Hummel is getting an awful lot of awards season love? (And wouldn't McHale's Navy have been so much better with him in it?)
The latest outpouring of Colfer acclaim comes from the Screen Actors Guild who announced their 17th annual SAG nominees this morning.
The Glee cast is up for a comedy ensemble award, but Colfer was the only cast member other than Jane Lynch to be recognized individually. And given who he's up against he's almost certain to be the frontrunner!
Another bit of good news for a Glbt favorite, The Kids Are All Right, scored individual acting nods for Annete Bening, Mark Rufallo, and also a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

The complete list of nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards follows below. The ceremony will be held on January 30th, 2011.
Nothing really to highlight here, unfortunately. SAG voters apparently didn’t care for Halle Berry’s performance as much as the Golden Globes did, because she’s not on this list. And neither is Idris Elba, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe. The cast of For Colored Girls got no love either.
The significance here is that SAG nominees and winners are voted on by members of the union – essentially, their peers.
But one thing that should be obvious by now is that the Oscar race is going to come down to 4 films and the performances in those films: The Social Network, Black Swan, The King’s Speech, and The Fighter. I still have to see the last 2.
