He earned a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in engineering physics from the University of British Columbia, and completed postgraduate work in engineering with a specialization in applied mathematics and fluid dynamics at the University of Western Ontario.
- He was selected as an astronaut in 1983. The former pilot and engineer went into space in 1997 as a payload specialist aboard the shuttle Discovery. He retired from the Canadian Space Agency in 2008 after nearly 25 years of service.
