Russell was part of the Arctic Monkey's award-winning short film 'Scummy Man', which won "Best Music DVD" at the 2007 NME Awards. He has performed on the London and Edinburgh Fringe and was nominated for a 'Fringe First' award and the 'Carol Tambor Award'. He was part of two sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Festival which were nominated for the 'Best of Edinburgh' award.
Russell was born in the North but now lives and works in the South. He is an Equity-registered actor and voice-artist and has retained his strong northern accent and comes to the profession through a variety of different job roles and life experiences which have all enriched his acting profile, lending authenticity to many of the gritty acting roles in which he has been cast. He has a rare versatility as an actor, and in his four years with the award winning 'Bite-Size' company was cast in parts which encompassed the whole gamut of human emotions from the highly comedic to the dark and gritty in short plays which received rave reviews at both the Edinburgh Fringe and Brighton Fringe - and were eventually featured on a long-term broadcast on Sky Arts.
Since then, he has continued to follow his passion in acting, working extensively in theatre and later venturing into voice-over work, most notably recording for the BBC One Show and Radio 4. He was the narrator of a television series for UKTV last year, 'Unexplained; Caught on Camera' and with his distinctive Northern accent has recently been credited with the role of 'the voice of Yorkshire Tea'.
In his acting career Russell has worked predominantly in theatre performing at the Goetheanum in Switzerland and the legendary Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. As a multi-disciplinary actor his work has included roles in film, television, commercials, musicals, and much lauded live performances on Sky Arts. In 2018 he was cast in the hit family movie 'Adventure Boyz' playing the part of bungling comedy criminal 'Simpson'. The feature film was premiered at Cannes to rave reviews.
Russell was cast in as many as five feature films in 2021: 'Psycho List', 'Six Years Gone', 'Election Night', 'Vindication Swim' and the supernatural horror 'The Lockdown Hauntings' his second feature film with director Howard J Ford which was filmed during lockdown. The film is being shown in Singapore and recently released in the US starring Tony Todd (Candyman). Russell plays Michael in 'Escape', directed for the third time by Howard J Ford. Saban films released 'Escape' in North America in March this year.
Most recently Russell has been cast as one of the main leads playing the role of Thomas in upcoming horror 'Witch' due for release on 29th April, produced by Skylark Vision. 101 Films International - an Amcomri Entertainment company - has acquired worldwide sales distribution rights for the film.
