Netflix is expanding its sports content with the new series Receiver featuring four outstanding wide receivers and one tight end. The series continues the streaming service’s partnership with the NFL and is expected to premiere this summer.
“It’s been said that there’s no more difficult position in the NFL than the quarterback,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “But throwing the pass is only half the story. Receiver follows five of the NFL’s best pass catchers throughout the 2023 season on and off the field: Davante Adams (Las Vegas Raiders), Justin Jefferson (Minnesota Vikings), George Kittle (San Francisco 49ers), Deebo Samuel (San Francisco 49ers), and Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions).”
NFL Films, Omaha Productions, and 2Pm Productions are producing the eight-episode season. Executive producers include 2Pm Productions’ Patrick Mahomes and Jacquelyn Dahl and Omaha Productions’ Peyton Manning and Jamie Horowitz. NFL Films’ Ross Ketover,...

Netflix is moving from quarterbacks to wide receivers and tight ends in its latest NFL docuseries.
The streamer has ordered Receiver from the team behind Quarterback – NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Patrick Mahomes’ 2Pm Productions.
The series follows stars such as Las Vegas Raider Davante Adams, Minnesota Viking Justin Jefferson, San Francisco 49ers George Kittle and Deebo Samuel and Detroit Lion Amon-ra St. Brown.
It comes after Netflix last year launched Quarterback starring Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, then of the Vikings, and Marcus Mariota, then of the Atlanta Falcons. Manning said Netflix had renewed Quarterback for a second season, but admitted that finding subjects was also tricky, hence the pivot to receivers.
The series follows this group throughout the 2023 season, which saw the 49ers beaten in the Super Bowl by the Chiefs.

No one loves Eli Manning as much as I do. Somewhere, I have a book on Manning inscribed, “To the only Giants fan who never booed Eli.” (Accurate.) There are the jerseys, cards, the autographs, the bobbleheads. I was at Eli’s first game, his retirement ceremony game, and so many in between. One time, I interviewed Manning while he was ostensibly promoting Frank’s RedHot Original sauce just so I could relive the glory days he never knew we shared. But I know a ripoff when I see one, and Hulu’s new series “Chad Powers” is a direct attempt to capitalize on the gigantic success of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.”
Before “Ted Lasso” was a show, Ted Lasso was a heightened fish-out-of-water original character created solely to promote a major media company’s sports brand. It was to be a one-and-done comedy skit. Before “Chad Powers” was a show,...

A number of layoffs of WWE office staff took place Friday, TheWrap has learned.
There were more than 100 WWE employees reportedly let go Friday, industry news outlet PWInsider reports, out of approximately 800 overall. The news comes following WWE and UFC merging to become Tko Group Holdings, under new parent company Endeavor. That deal closed earlier this week.
The layoffs did not include any of the wrestlers themselves, who are also generally classified as independent contractors. Layoffs were expected, as with most mergers. That’s due to both cost-cutting and to people at both companies in similar roles no longer having a place in the new corporate structure.
WWE declined TheWrap’s request for comment. We have reached out to Tko for comment.
Those laid off include Dana Warrior, wife of the late wrestler Ultimate Warrior, according to PWInsider. She served as a WWE public ambassador and previously worked on the company’s creative team.

Peyton Manning and Netflix are searching for more quarterbacks to profile in a second season of their NFL docuseries.
Manning, who exec produces Quarterback, which starred Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota, revealed that the streamer had greenlit the series for a second season.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, the Colts legends said, “Season 2 has been greenlit by Netflix, we’re excited, we’re hoping for more quarterbacks, it’s easier to say yes. I don’t want to hear ‘It’s going to be a distraction’ because that’s not true, Patrick Mahomes proved that, Kirk Cousins proved that, Marcus, the way he handled that, proved that. We’re hoping that guys after seeing it say this is going to be a cool thing that I can show to my kids when I’m older, show to my grandkids one day. Hopefully the pitch will be easier.

ESPN may be synonymous with sports, but plenty of stars have bailed for Fox Sports lately. Have a look at some the big names.

Cris Carter
Carter first joined Fox Sports in 2016 and had hosted “First Things First,” alongside Nick Wright since 2017, but it was a short tenure. He left Fox Sports in late 2019, reportedly after he had an outburst with higher-ups over not being part of the network’s “Thursday Night Football” coverage.

Exclusive: Sylvester Stallone’s Balboa Productions has formed a partnership with rising sports streaming outlet Dazn, starting with a series of feature documentaries under the banner One Night.
The pairing suits Dazn’s initial positioning in the U.S. as a home for boxing, though it’s a broad enough heading to encompass other sports narratives. The $20-a-month streaming service launched in the U.S. in fall 2018 but also operates in eight other countries, carrying games in many territories from leagues like the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball. Stateside, Dazn made its biggest initial splash by grabbing exclusive rights to five years of Canelo Alvarez fights. It also streamed the biggest boxing upset in decades on June 1, when Andy Ruiz beat Anthony Joshua at Madison Square Garden.
Leveraging Stallone’s creation of the Rocky franchise, One Night films will look back at memorable nights in recent boxing history such as the Ruiz-Joshua bout.

It also operates in eight other major countries, including Brazil, Canada, Germany and Japan, controlling rights to major sports in many of them. Billionaire Len Blavatnik is the majority shareholder of its parent company.
Uninterrupted last collaborated with Dazn on a 40 Days outing leading up to Alvarez’s fight last April against Daniel Jacobs.

Boxer Patrick Day (above right) died Wednesday from head injuries sustained during a match over the weekend. He was 27.
Day was box against Charles Conwell during the Super-Welterweight bout Saturday night at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago. He was knocked unconscious during the tenth round and carried out of the ring on a stretcher. The New York-native later slipped into a coma after undergoing brain surgery but never woke up. The fight was streamed on Dazn, an on-demand sports streaming service.
Promoter Lou Dibella confirmed Day’s passing via an online statement.
“He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including his mentor, friend and trainer Joe Higgins,” the statement read. “On behalf of Patrick’s family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury.

Exclusive: Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas and Peter Berg’s Film 45 have set a multi-series partnership with rising sports streaming outlet Dazn.
The pair, both avid boxing fans, are beginning the venture by teaming for an edition of Dazn’s 40 Days that is pegged to Gennadiy “Ggg” Golovkin’s fight with Steve Rolls at Madison Square Garden on June 8. The show, which launched earlier this year as a core franchise offering behind-the-scenes looks, this time will zero in on the lead-up to the bout, which is Golovkin’s debut on Dazn.
The actor and director are frequent collaborators, occasionally focusing on boxing in their work. In 2010, Wahlberg starred in and produced multiple Oscar nominee The Fighter. In 2012, Berg’s Film 45 directed and produced the On Freddie Roach boxing docu-series on HBO.

Dazn, the rising sports streaming operation headed by former ESPN chief John Skipper, has added a key exec from Skipper’s former regime, bringing in Jamie Horowitz as Evp of content for North America.
Horowitz had been a consultant at Dazn since 2018. He was fired by Fox Sports in 2017 amid an investigation by the company of accusations of sexual harassment. Through his attorney, Horowitz asserted his innocence and the company never disclosed the reason for his dismissal. In 2014, he was ousted by NBC after a tumultous 10-week stint overseeing Today that came soon after the end of the morning show’s decade-plus advantage over rival Good Morning America in the ratings.
As Dazn pumps more money into filling out its programming lineup beyond live rights to soccer, boxing, Mma and other sports, it will look to Horowitz to replicate his successful development of shows like ESPN’s daily debate staple First Take.

Jamie Horowitz is joining Dazn, the sports subscription service primarily focused on boxing and Mma, as executive vice president of content in North America, according to a company memo shared on Friday morning.
Horowitz will report directly to chairman John Skipper. The two previously worked together at ESPN, where Horowitz crafted several shows, including “First Take,” while Skipper was president. Horowitz later moved on to Fox Sports, where he served as president of FS1 from 2015 to 2017 before being fired after the network opened an investigation into claims of sexual harassment. Horowitz, through his attorney, denied any misconduct.
In his memo to staff on Friday, Skipper said that Horowitz will oversee original programming, live production and social media as part of his role. Horowitz joins Dazn as it prepares to invest about $12 million into original content.

Since arriving at Fox Sports in May 2015, Jamie Horowitz has upended the programming philosophy, rejecting the news and highlights genre epitomized by Espn's iconic SportsCenter in favor of host-driven opinion and debate programming — a kind of Fox News for sports compared with CNN's more traditional news product. "Sometimes I get positioned as anti-SportsCenter," he admits. But his repudiation of the Espn strategy is purely analytical, given how ubiquitous highlights are online. Many of us say we’d like to live life without regrets. But that’s a virtually impossible, even for the most carefree of people. So imagine how hard that is for those in the spotlight, with their every angry moment, flippant tweet or huge blowup watched by the world.
Today, social media has made it pretty impossible to make a mistake and then let it pass quietly out of the news cycle without fallout. Inevitably, a boycott, an apology, a show cancellation or a job termination is demanded and then multiplied many times on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and in the media.

The most striking thing about Thursday's episode of the "Today" show may have been what you didn't see: No empty chair where Natalie Morales usually sits (she was there, calmly reading the news, as usual), and no other sign of the backstage turmoil that has engulfed the venerable morning news show this week, which had threatened the jobs of correspondents Morales and Willie Geist and has already claimed the job of the new producer brought in just a few weeks ago to fix the troubled show.
Despite the placid surface, it's clear that there is still trouble brewing at "Today," a creative and corporate struggle that is not likely to end soon. And the stakes are high, involving big money, big names, and big egos.
