Tokyo, Jan 21 (Ians) International Olympic Committee (Ioc) president Thomas Bach pledged on Thursday that the Tokyo Olympics will be held as scheduled. Bach said that Ioc is committed to conducting the Games and has "no plan B" although scepticism over the feasibility of the Olympics has increased both in Japan and overseas because of the rise in Covid-19 cases.
Bach assured hosts Japan that Ioc firmly believes the Tokyo Olympics will open on July 23 in the Olympic stadium. "This is why there is no plan B and this is why we are fully committed to making these games safe and successful," he said, Xinhua news reports.
Dick Pound, the Ioc's longest-serving member, also backtracked on his previous comments, claiming that the postponed Tokyo Olympic Games will be held in the summer.
The 78-year-old Canadian said on January 8 that he was not "certain" that the Tokyo Games would take place.

Beijing, Jan 8 (Ians) The Covid-19 challenges have not compromised Japan and the International Olympic Committee's (Ioc) determination to host, as scheduled, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which was already postponed for a year due to the pandemic, Ioc vice president Yu Zaiqing said.
The remarks were made in an interview with Xinhua on Friday, during which Yu confirmed that the Ioc and its Japanese partners' determination to host the Tokyo Games "remains unchanged" and urged for "spreading accurate information."
Earlier on Friday, Dick Pound, the longest-serving Ioc member, told UK's state broadcaster BBC that "I can't be certain because the ongoing elephant in the room would be the surges in the virus," raising concerns about whether the postponed Games will be staged.
Tokyo 2020 organisers said in a statement on the same day that they will continue to "proceed carefully with all necessary work" under "required safety and security measures" in preparation...

The Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo will be postponed for a year, until 2021, Japan’s Prime Minister Abe Shinzo announced Tuesday.
The executive board of Tokyo 2020 has scheduled a press conference on Monday that is now expected formally to announce the postponement of the games. The games were scheduled to have started on July 24 and run through to Aug. 9. The Summer Paralympics were set to have run Aug. 25-Sept. 6.
“I proposed to postpone for about a year and (Ioc) president (Thomas) Bach responded with 100% agreement,” Abe told reporters.
The Ioc had previously acknowledged the growing pressure on the games, caused by the coronavirus outbreak and its impact on travel and athletes’ ability to train and participate in qualifying competition. But the organization said the definitive decision to go ahead or postpone would be made in mid-April.

Despite repeated claims up until now that the games would continue as scheduled, even with no fans in attendance, the 2020 Summer Olympics have been postponed amid concerns over the global health crisis currently rocking the world. The New York Times first reported the news. The games were set to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from July 24 through August 9. The traditional Lighting Ceremony of the Olympic Flame in Greece that kicks off the Olympics season will be held Thursday without spectators owing to coronavirus concerns, organizers said Monday.
The Hellenic Olympic Committee also urged local communities to “follow the instructions of the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Organization” when the Olympic Torch comes through Greek and Japanese cities and towns on it way to the 2020 Tokyo Games.
The Olympics, scheduled for July 24-August 9, remains on schedule despite the rise of coronavirus cases worldwide. The International Olympic Committee last week reaffirmed its plan to hold the Games as planned, though at least one Ioc member, Dick Pound, said last month that if the Olympics were to be canceled, a decision would have to come by late May.

Updated with comments on Olympic advertising:
Dan Lovinger, Evp, Ad Sales, NBC Sports Group said the division recently surpassed $1.25 billion in national advertising for the upcoming summer Olympics in Tokyo, which exceeds sales total for Rio in 2016 and has set a new Olympic record.
In statement Tuesday afternoon he said nearly has 90% of the Tokyo Olympic inventory has been sold along with the vast majority of our tentpole sponsorships
Also, coverage for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics is sold out.
“The momentum for Tokyo 2020 remains strong, but inventory is growing scarce as advertisers continue to value the massive reach of the Games and are eager to align their brands with the biggest media event of the year,” he said.
The statement followed comments earlier in the day by Comcast CEO Brian Roberts at a media conference and a statement by the Ioc that it’s “fully committed” to the Games opening as planned on July 24.

Summer Olympics: Officials 'Reluctant' to Ban Russian Athletes from Rio Games Despite Doping Scandal
With the 2016 Summer Olympics just weeks away, the fate of Russian athletes hoping to head to the Games hangs in the balance. After a damning report found that Russian Olympians used performance-enhancing drugs at the 2014 winter games in Sochi, Russia, the World Anti-Doping Agency recommended that all Russian athletes entered to compete in the upcoming Games in Rio de Janeiro be barred from the event. However, former Wada president Dick Pound said he fears that the International Olympic Committee won't implement the ban. Every country has their negative stereotype: the French? Stinky; Americans? Obnoxious; Italians? Moped riders (shudder). Canada's stereotype, in contrast, is supposed to be great. We're nice. We're nicey-nice, nice people, helping old ladies across the street and saying "sorry" even if you bump into us. It would seem, to the international community, we're the equivalent of the guy that the hot girl is "just friends" with. We're not good enough to date, but one day she'll probably give us a hand job out of pity as long as we promise not to tell anyone.
Well, I hate to break it to you world, but Canada isn't the boring sweater-vest wearing place you think it is. Canada is a nation built by and for cranks. See, what the rest of the world doesn't realize is when you think we're being self-effacing and modest we're probably making fun of you right to your face.

TORONTO -- The Canadian Olympic Committee on Wednesday unveiled plans to launch twin English- and French-language amateur sport channels, pending regulatory approval.
The two proposed domestic channels -- Canadian Amateur Sports Network and le Reseau du sport amateur canadien -- aim to showcase Olympic and non-Olympic amateur sports at regional, national and international events.
"Between Olympic Games, it is as if there are no Canadian athletes. Our networks will bring more sports and more young Canadians to the attention of Canadians," said Richard Pound, a veteran International Olympic Committee member and chairman of the proposed COC channels.
The applications were formally submitted by the COC to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, the country's TV regulator, which is expected to hold hearings on a possible new domestic sports channel before rendering a decision.
The CRTC also is expected to shortly receive an application from the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. to launch an all-sports digital channel. Programming on the proposed CBC channel will include sporting events with cash prizes, in addition to amateur sports.
