At YouTube’s Brandcast presentation for brands and agencies, held for the first time during upfronts week, the focus was on the gigantic video platform’s popular creators, its scale across internet TVs — and a new solution for marketers to set limits on ad frequency, addressing one of the most irritating aspects of ad-supported streaming services.
“The audiences you most care about are coming to YouTube to watch content,” CEO Susan Wojcicki told attendees at the event, held Tuesday evening at the Imperial Theatre in New York’s Times Square. She cited Nielsen’s estimate that YouTube overall reached 230 million people 18 and older in the U.S. in October 2021: “YouTube is the mainstream,” she said.

MTV’s Total Request Live, better known as Trl and originally hosted by Carson Daly, was one of the cable network’s biggest shows during its run between 1998 and 2008.
The show aired the most requested music videos of the day as voted for by viewers.
However, by 2008, the internet, and particularly YouTube had become the preeminent destination for music lovers to find their favorite videos. Twelve years on, YouTube’s Released, which launched last week, is taking up that mantle for a new generation of fans.
The show, which is a 15-minute series that follows musicians before they launch their new music video is exec produced by Van Toffler, who set up Gunpowder & Sky in 2016, having spent 28 years at MTV.
“As an executive at MTV, I was maligned on many days. One of those days was the day I decided to kill Trl, and the fact of the matter is I didn’t kill Trl,...

Comedy Central’s latest development slate is diverse in more ways than one.
Not only has the cable network put together several new series with performers of color at the center, but the three shows picked up Tuesday by Comedy Central are all very different.
Ordered to series are the stand-up/musical show “The New Negroes,” the comedy game show “Taskmaster” and the scripted comedy “Corporate.” In development are shows from creators including Awkwafina, Neal Brennan, Arturo Castro, Franchesca Ramsey, Noël Wells and Flint Wainess, among others.
“The network when I got here was pretty traditionally targeted toward young white guys, both in terms of who the audience was and who was creating the shows for the audience,” said Comedy Central president Kent Alterman. “We started changing that a few years ago by expanding that into having funny women on the network, with Amy Schumer and Broad City and a lot more since.
