Battles Without Honor And Humanity from director Kinji Fukasaku will be available from Arrow Academy on August 28th
In the early 1970s, Kinji Fukasaku’s three-film Battles Without Honor and Humanity series was a massive hit in Japan, and kicked off a boom in realistic, modern yakuza films based on true stories. Although Fukasaku had intended to end the series, Toei Studio convinced him to return to the director’s chair for this unconnected, follow-up trilogy of films, each starring Battles leading man Bunta Sugawara and telling separate, but fictional stories about the yakuza in different locations in Japan. In the first film, Bunta Sugawara is Miyoshi, a low-level assassin of the Yamamori gang who is sent to jail after a bungled hit. While in stir, family member Aoki (Lone Wolf and Cub‘s Tomisaburo Wakayama) attempts to seize power from the boss, and Miyoshi finds himself stuck between the...

In celebration of iconic Japanese actress Meiko Kaji's upcoming 70th birthday and Valentine's Day, Japan Society is throwing a mini retro party of the inimitable actress. Best known for her role as Nami "Sasori (Scorpion)" Matsushima in the Female Prisoner series and later as Yuki, the Lady Snowblood, Kaji dominated the exploitation-tinged 60s and 70s Japanese cinema. They are: New Battles Without Humanity: The Boss's Head, Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance, Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter, Blind Woman's Curse & Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable Please visit Japan Society website for...

When distributor Arrow announced they were going to release a boxset of all four Female Prisoner Scorpion films, it was one of those moments when we raise flags here at Screen Anarchy central. I mean, these films are rightfully known as classics in the Japanese exploitation genre, and their star Kaji Meiko is iconic. Seven years ago, Eureka had released the first three films as a boxset on DVD, so Arrow's announcement was also a bit of a surprise. Well, the end result is finally in stores, and meets all expectations. All films look damn good and the discs are loaded with extras. I mean, when the contributor-list includes names like Jasper Sharp, Tom Mes, Marc Walkow, Gareth Evans and Kier-La Janisse, you know you...

Two days into Fantastic Fest and it already feels like Day Five -- daily downpours, full parking and an overflowing lobby can't deter the spirit of the 1,650 attendees at this year's jam-packed film festival. The theme song that comes to mind is Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." My mantra of "it's a marathon, not a sprint" has already been replaced with the festival motto "Chaos reigns," as I've managed to fit in five films, three red carpets, two parties and two late nights in just the first two days. Let's not even discuss how much I've already spent on alcohol at The Highball.

Kicking off tomorrow, the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival is a revelrous microcosm of the weird and wonderful that Japan cinema has to offer. And right at the heart of the festivities, there's always an anarchic celebration of all things extra extra crazy by splattermeister Nishimura Yoshihiro. This year he has again been gifted one of the festival screening venues for an entire day of oddball programming.Among the highlights this year, Nishimura will be screening (for the first and perhaps only time) a selection of short films that contended for the coveted 26th spot in The ABCs Of Death 2, currently in post-production. Ably assisted by the film's co-producer, Marc Walkow, Nishimura will be giving some of the best entries in the "M Is For..."...

Producers Ant Timpson, Tim League, and the Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing announced today the production of ABCs Of Death 2, a high energy sequel to the 2012 anthology hit that delivers 26 new dark tales from the industry’s most celebrated genre directors. Taking all that was great from the first installment, ABCs Of Death 2 aims to be a wilder, leaner, faster paced and even more entertaining anthology this time around, with a new crop of award-winning, visionary filmmakers from around the globe.
In a significant departure from the first installment, ABCs Of Death 2 is expanding beyond horror directors. The sequel’s new roster includes...

Horror Anthology films are back. There is no doubt about it. Last year, we saw two of them – both from the same distribution company of Magnet Releasing – in V/H/S (review here) and ABC’s of Death. This year, we will see the follow-up to the former film, V/H/S. However, we will have to wait for ABC’s of Death 2 until 2014. While I consider ABCs of Death to be ”Fantastic Fest: The Movie”, the actual product wasn’t anywhere near the gratification one gets from the festival. Read the Press Release below for all the loose details. I’m really happy Jerome Sable is included on this director list as he someone I think everyone should look out for. You can even read our interview with Sable here.

Monster Pictures has announced that it will release epic horror anthology The ABCs of Death theatrically in the UK and Eire on 26 April 2013. The film, which features 26 short films from 26 of the world's most exciting up-and-coming genre filmmakers, each depicting one letter of the alphabet, boasts an impressive roll call of talent, many of whom have been championed on these pages over the years. This messy menagerie of mayhem is the brainchild of Ant Timpson and Tim League, and was helped along its way to the big screen by folks like Marc Walkow and our very own Todd Brown. Participating filmmakers include Ben Wheatley (Kill List), Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), Iguchi Noboru (Dead Sushi), Nishimura Yoshihiro (Tokyo Gore Police), Nacho...

A bit of a news flash for our bi-monthly NYC Happenings here. Our good pal at Subway Cinema, Marc Walkow has clued us in that the legendary Japanese filmmaker (most notably for House) Obayashi Nobuhiko will be in town this week for several film screenings and in-the-works screenings. This is partially coinciding with MoMA's Japanese New Wave series which we just posted about this, where Ob has several films playing this weekend, but also in relation to a screening of Obayahsi's early short films at Anthology Film Archives this Sunday, December 9th. Obayashi will be at Anthology for this screening and what is sure to be a lively, in-depth discussion afterwards. Walkow and company are also hard at work getting a screening for House in...

News on the upcoming anthology film The Profane Exhibit continues to pour across my scalpel and syringe-littered desk at an alarming rate. (As a doctor, I keep all the most important tools right at hand, rusty or otherwise). And it seems each time we get an update, it's more impressive than the last. This one is no different.
Not only have producers David Bond and Amanda Manuel snared Sergio Stivaletti as the newest director added to this gruesome gathering, but they've also announced Eihi Shinna is the initial actress tagged for Yoshihiro Nishimura's Jigoku portion of the film. That's a win-win, folks. In fact, there's so much winning going on with the pre-production of The Profane Exhibit, I'm figuring somebody there must have Tiger Blood. (Sorry, had to shoehorn in one last Charlie Sheen joke. Too late? Yeah, probably too late…but humor me, huh?)

Japanese Space Zombies? Chainsaw Katanas? Eihi Shiina? I say hell yes to that!
Once again, we dove into the insane realm of Japanese horror, but unlike his previous entry, the manic and very tongue-in-cheek Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, director Yoshihiro Nishimura paid homage to one of his greatest influences, George A. Romero with this ultra bloody addition to the zombie horror genre, Helldriver.
Making a name for himself with his audacious and brutal Tokyo Gore Police in 2008, Nishimura goes for absolute broke with this endeavor, combining wickedly profane mutations, massive bloodletting, and a biting social satire to create a solid entry in Japanese horror.
The Setup
Kika was just an average girl trying to live an average life. But soon she and her crippled father are living on the run, trying desperately to stay hidden from the psychotic canniablistic duo of her mother Rikka and her uncle. One day,...

Twitch has posted an English-subtitled trailer for Yoshihiro Nishimura’s Helldriver, a new zombie film created for Nikkatsu’s genre-focused Sushi Typhoon label.
According to the Sushi Typhoon website, the story involves a mysterious mist that infects the human population of northern Japan, turning them into flesh-eating zombies. The southern half of the country is left uninfected and relatively safe behind a heavily-fortified barrier. However, there is disagreement over how the zombie epidemic should be handled. Should the zombies be protected due to their former humanity or exterminated like a plague? As the debate reaches a stalemate and the nation’s economy collapses, the government takes secret action. A chainsaw sword-wielding high school girl with an artificial heart named Kika (Yumiko Hara) leads a rag-tag team of zombie killers north with a mission to assassinate the zombie queen, Rikka (Eihi Shiina).

This year’s Fantasia is taking a while to get off the ground horror-wise, and it wasn’t until the second evening of the festival that we saw the first real horror related film of this year’s program, the documentary Herschell Gordon Lewis - The Godfather of Gore (review here).
The movie was thoroughly entertaining, containing tons of stories straight from Herschell, his collaborators, and high profile fans such as John Waters and Joe Bob Briggs. The screening was attended by the filmmaking team, Jimmy Maslon, Mike Vraney, and the always hilarious and informative Frank Henenlotter. The man himself, H.G. Lewis was also on hand to answer questions, and lead the Fantasia audience through a rollicking rendition of the 2000 Maniacs theme song! Yeeeeee-Haw!

Oh, what a night that was. As those following the Twitch Twitter feed already know the Canadian premiere of Mutant Girls Squad came at Fantasia last night and brought a few surprises with it.
Kicking things off, co-director Yoshihiro Nishimura and Sushi Typhoon producer Yoshinori Chiba hit the stage with Nyaff co-founder Marc Walkow - who also doubles as Sushi Typhoons North American press and festival guy - and dropped a pair of big, unannounced treats on the audience.
First: a promo reel for the entire Sushi Typhoon lineup including the first footage from Sion Sono's Cold Fish (very bloody), Noboru Iguchi's Zaborgar (very roboty), and Yudai Yamaguchi and Tak Sakaguchi's Yakuza Weapon which featured regular Sushi Typhoon star Cay Izumi as a creation known simply as the Naked Human Weapon. Whatever you're thinking right now is probably not far from the truth.

With last night's screening of Blades Of Blood and Gallants (which tied with Castaway On The Moon for the Audience Award), the 9th annual New York Asian Film Festival has come to a close.
We at Twitch have to thank co-founder, Grady Henrix for being our ambassador to the festival, providing us with everything a growing group of writers need to cover such a whirl wind event. An extra shout out to all the staff at Subway Cinema, Lincoln Film Society, IFC Center, and Japan Society for running a smooth show. And lastly thanks to the filmmakers and actors who were so gracious enough to sit down and talk with us about what they do so well.
So, with another year down, lets take a look back at some of our favorite films and highlights from the festivities.

So ... Nikkatsu's Sushi Typhoon label is rolling along at a ferocious pace - Mutant Girls Squad, Alien Versus Ninja and Cold Fish all completed, Noboru Iguchi's Denjin Zaborgar now in post, and Yoshihiro Nishimura's Helldriver and Yudai Yamaguchi's Yakuza Weapon currently filming - with regular behind the scenes images from all of them turning up on a regular basis via their Twitter feed. For the most part I haven't been commenting much on these because they're very much of the men-at-work variety and show very little of the actual productions but in this case I can't resist.
This one's from the set of Nishimura's Helldriver, a zombie car movie from what I understand - in the sense that there are lots of zombies, lots of cars, and I believe in some cases zombies driving the cars, which may also be zombies themselves - and features a familiar face.

Some startling news out of Cannes today. While milling about the event, one of the DC faithful managed to snap a picture of some really, really early sales art for what will be Dario Argento's stamp on the most famous vampire of them all. In 3D of course.
Below you'll find the sales art for Dario Argento's Dracula in Stereoscopic 3D. According to FrightFest's Alan Jones on Twitter "Just announced, Dario Argento's Dracula in 3D, filming in Italy January, period setting".
Not sure how we feel about this one just yet, but we remain open-minded. Let's just hope Argento gives old Drac better treatment than he did The Phantom of the Opera as that flick was nothing short of painful to sit through. Let us know what you think below.
Thanks to Marc Walkow one of the creators of the NY Asian Film Festival and Subway Cinema for the snapshot.

[This review originally ran with the film's premiere at Fantastic Fest but with Robogeisha now screening as part of Action Fest we hereby present it to you again.] Ah, geisha. Beautiful. Alluring. Mysterious. Robotic. Strap in for a good dose of strangeness, the first Secret Screening of Fantastic Fest 2009 has rolled out and there to guide the way were director Noboru Iguchi and special effects man Yoshihiro Nishimura with the -not-officially-a-world-premiere-for-contractual-reasons-but-first-time-it's-been-shown-anywhere-in-the-world screening of RoboGeisha. Yoshie is the archetypal younger sister, overshadowed in all ways by her elder sibling. Sis is confident. Yoshie is not. Sis is climbing through the ranks of a local geisha house. Yoshie scrubs the walls and performs menial tasks. Sis is in love with the young head of a local steel outfit. Yoshie ... wait a minute ... Yoshie is the one that he actually prefers! This is a recipe for conflict ... The latest effort from the crew behind cult titles Machine Girl, Sukeban Boy, Tokyo Gore Police and Vampire Girl Versus Frankenstein Girl, you pretty much have to know going in exactly what you're going...

Nikkatsu’s new “extreme” film and DVD label Sushi Typhoon now has an official Facebook page with updates on their upcoming releases. First up, an English-subtitled trailer for Seiji Chiba‘s Alien vs. Ninja.
In the film, the Iga Ninja, led by Yamata, witness a giant ball of flame crash off in the distance. When they investigate the crash site, they’re attacked by vicious alien creatures with fangs and claws. Yamata and the few remaining survivors swear revenge on their mysterious attackers, but none of their traditional ninja weapons seem to have any effect.
Instead of trying to wedge directors into projects they’re not comfortable with, Sushi Typhoon seems to be letting them go with their strengths. Chiba has already directed a series of historical action movies involving the Iga Ninja including Tensho Iga no Ran (2005), Iga no Ran: Kosoku (2007), and Sengoku: Iga no Ran (2009). The new film by Tak (Be a Man! Samurai School) Sakaguchi, Noboru (Robo-Geisha) Iguchi, and Yoshihiro (Tokyo Gore Police) Nishimura, Sento Shojo (Japanese title) or Mutant Girls Squad, is in post production; and we've got a behind-the-scenes look at the editing process.
According to the Sushi Typhoon Twitter page, the film starring pin-up model Yumi Sugimoto is currently slated to have its international premiere in July. We're guessing that means it will premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival, where Nishimura's Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl had its international premiere last year. Just makes sense, no?
The images below come courtesy of Marc Walkow of Subway Cinema.
The man barely visible on the monitor is the film's central baddie (played by Versus' Tak Sakaguchi, reportedly as a cross-dressing mutant sword-swinger). The other shots are of an in-studio creature effect and Nishimura on his fourth nonstop day of editing the movie.

As if Tak Sakaguchi, Noboru Iguchi, and Yoshihiro Nishimura teaming up to direct Mutant Girls Squad (which we told you about here) wasn't splatter-tastic enough, now comes word that the Iguchi, Nishimura, and Takashi Shimizu TV show entitled The Ancient Dogoo Girl is being adapted into a feature film. Regular readers of Twitch may very well recall us mentioning The Ancient Dogoo Girl a good while back. A low budget television series initiated by Machine Girl director Noboru Iguchi -- who then roped in pals Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and Takashi Shimizu (Juon, The Grudge) to direct episodes -- and produced for a minor Japanese cable network available only in parts of the country, Dogoo revolves around an ancient yokai-battling warrior revived in modern times. As you'd expect from an Iguchi project, the lead is not exactly shy about showing off flesh and the entire thing is shot through with crazy creatures and unrepentant adolescent energy.
The big question, of course, is when people would be able to see this thing. Heck - a healthy portion of Japan hasn't even been able to see it yet, so what are the chance of it being seen over here? Well,...

Tak (Be a Man! Samurai School) Sakaguchi, Noboru (Robo-Geisha) Iguchi, and Yoshihiro (Tokyo Gore Police) Nishimura are teaming up to direct the genre mash-up Sento Shojo (Japanese title) or Mutant Girls Squad for Nikkatsu Films starring pin-up model Yumi Sugimoto.
Marc Walkow at Outcast Cinema tipped us off that the Tokyo-based shoot begins on February 1st and lasts 20 days, with each of the men tackling a different 1/3 of the movie. The directors have stated that it is not an anthology film, and rumor has it that each portion of the movie will reflect their respective talents in action (Sakaguchi), comedy (Iguchi), and splatter (Nishimura).
Director Iguchi, who also wrote and directed Machine Girl, has stated that "gore and freak effects will be abundant" throughout the movie. Always nice to hear that, no?
Keep it locked for more as it comes. In the interim ... dig on a yummy photo of Yumi!

[Updated with fresh details!]
The project is a three way action omnibus titled Sento Shojo. The star, Japanese pin up girl Yumi Sugimoto. Directing? Noboru Iguchi (Machine Girl), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police), and Tak Sakaguchi (Be A Man, Samurai School). Now, all three directors are currently prepping other features so I have no idea when this is going to roll, but roll it shall. Poor Sugimoto ... she seems like such a nice girl ...
Update!
Thanks to Marc Walkow of Outcast Cinema for the following bits of news. Backed by Nikkatsu studios, which probably means this will be released here via their Sushi Typhoon label, the English title is The Mutant Girls Squad. Production begins February 1st and will follow a similar format to Johnnie To / Tsui Hark / Ringo Lam collaboration Triangle, with each of the three directors handling a third of a single continuous storyline. According to Iguchi, "gore and freak effects will be abundant.

Somewhere around a month ago I received a very excited email from Marc Walkow - Outcast Cinema honcho, New York Asian Film Festival man about town and Fantastic Fest compatriot - while he was on a trip to Tokyo. Seems he had just seen a rough cut of Kazufumi Nakahira's Sukeban Hunters: Soukatsu Nagurikomi Sakusen and, in his words, classic 70's style pinky violence was making a comeback.
A spin off of the earlier Yakuza Hunter short film, there are a pair of Sukeban Hunters films currently in post, the cast of the first anchored by Av star Asami, well known to fans here from her work with Noboru Iguchi in Sukeban Boy, Machine Girl and Robogeisha. And now Nippon Cinema has dug up what they're calling a trailer for the first film, though it's really more of an extended promo reel. Running over five and a half minutes and...

In a little more than two weeks Fantastic Fest will be upon us. I've personally been looking forward to this since the moment SXSW 2009 came to a close, and the anticipation has only intensified. The lineup of genre films this year brings some very exciting dilemmas to the table since some of the films I want to see are playing on the same night and only screening once. Instead of sitting at home moping along to my favorite Morrissey songs, decisions must be made and priorities set. Here is the link to the films that will be featured in Fantastic Fest 2009. Fflogo For those of you that are unfamiliar of the badassery of Fantastic Fest, below is the official about statement: Fantastic Fest was founded in 2005 by Tim League (founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema) and Harry Knowles (founder of Ain’t It Cool News). Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the U.

In a quick flurry of e-mails between myself and Outcast Cinema’s Marc Walkow I found out he has been hinting at an upcoming DVD release of a very popular Takashi Miike film over the past week. In fact, he’s been over in Japan meeting with Miike recording commentary for the film; he has also met and conducted interviews with Ren Osugi and Renji Ishibashi about the film. Then on yesterday he dropped the biggest hint of all and posted a couple images of the lead actors from said film- Ryo Ishibashi and Eihi Shiina!
Yes, though he cannot give details about this DVD release we now know that somewhere, sometime soon, there’s gonna be a DVD release of Miike’s Audition and Marc has been meeting with principal cast members and the director conducting new interviews and recording new commentary. Sweet!

Break Out The Rain Slickers And Brace For Arterial Spray! Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl Is Here!
Back in the lead up to Fantastic Fest 2008, Outcast Cinema‘s Marc Walkow played a key role in bringing Tokyo Gore Police and director / gore-tastic effects man Yoshihiro Nishimura to the good ol’ U.S. of A. for spread his blend of carnage across the screen. Walkow and Nishimura have stayed in touch since and it was Walkow who pointed me to the behind the scenes shots from Nishimura’s upcoming Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl while also letting me know that the first trailer for the film would be unveiled at the official press launch in Japan on April 21st. Well, it may still be the 20th here, but it’s the 21st there and the trailer is here.
You want extreme splatter and gore? Oh, yeah, it’s all here and then some in all the high-pressure spraying fashion that you’d come to expect from a man...
