Zayn stopped by The Tonight Show to showcase his recent song, “Alienated.” The appearance marked the musician’s first television performance in eight years and saw Zayn singing to an empty theater alongside his live band, rather than in the late-night show’s New York studio.
“Alienated” comes off Zayn’s new LP, Room Under the Stairs, which dropped last week. The musician previously released a live performance video of the track shot in a recording studio to preview the album, revealing the LP’s acoustic vibe.

Zayn’s starting point for his fourth studio album Room Under the Stairs was an emotional low point. “Alienated” began in his home studio in rural Pennsylvania, where he wrote the majority of the record on his own in a state of both creative and physical isolation. The percussive track simmers in solitary sorrow as the musician dives simultaneously into the darkest depths of his mind and the bottom of a bottle. “Know my reasons for the pain, but if you brought it in front of me I know I’d do it all again,...

Zayn Malik has unveiled an ethereal music video for “Stardust.” The single appears on the former One Direction member’s new LP, Room Under the Stars, out today.
In the clip, directed by Frank and Ivanna Borin, Zayn is a celestial being trapped on Earth, guided by falling stars as he explores a magic-tinged lake and a forest. “Feels like stardust/ Floatin’ all around us,” he croons on the anthemic song. “Shootin’ right across a/ Big black sky.”

On a hike with his snacks of choice — his fiancé Noah Galvin and chocolate mushrooms — Ben Platt saw the light.
“I was feeling really joyful and really present with [Noah] and I think he could really sense that. We were having one of those deep talks on our walk and he was asking me to describe what was allowing me to feel that way, and I started to talk about what it feels like to be in our relationship and my love for him and I started to envision a physical manifestation of what it might look like inside my head,” Platt tells The Hollywood Reporter.
“Because I am super anxiety prone and a very stressed person generally, I imagine there’s lots of jagged edges and lots of sharp things poking out and prodding, and when I envision what love does, it doesn’t necessarily make those things disappear or replace them.

Chris Stapleton took the stage during his recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show for a special performance of “Loving You on My Mind.” The song, which appears on the musician’s latest studio album, Higher, was elevated to the next level as Stapleton was joined by Hudson herself and the country duo the War and Treaty.
Stapleton kicked off the song with the War and Treaty, singing alongside his band. About halfway through, following one of the singer’s soulful guitar solos, Hudson emerged from side stage to bring the performance home.

The week Sturgill Simpson’s breakthrough, generation-defining second album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, was released, the Number One song on country radio was Brantley Gilbert’s Nickelback-ified ode to women in short shorts and the boys who bring them to the tailgate. It was called “Bottoms Up,” and it wasn’t an aberration: The climate on Music Row in 2014 was still eagerly chasing the bro-country sound that Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, and Gilbert helped turn into a reliable cash cow. So much so that the only single by...

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter is a landmark provocation that dares the country music establishment to look itself in the eye. Nashville has spent decades marginalizing Black women like Linda Martell and Rhiannon Giddens, and outright ignoring the likes of Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, and Reyna Roberts. Beyoncé, inspired at least partially by the ugly fallout from her appearance alongside the Chicks at the CMAs in 2016, is now playing a game of chicken with Music Row. Are they really going to ignore one of the most prominent Black artists of the last 20 years when she comes to the gates of their white picket fences? And, if so, how are they going to reconcile that with their insistence that of course we aren’t racist with the fact that Beyoncé has proven that she knows exactly what she’s doing and why.

Origins is a recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, country singer Cassandra Lewis sheds light on her new single, “Lost in a Dream.”
There’s a transportive quality to Cassandra Lewis’ voice. From the moment she opens her mouth, the listener is struck with the feeling of being in a different time and place, and while her trilling vibrato might recall Dolly Parton, her belt feels more theatrical, invoking the heartbreaking drama of an artist like Adele.
Lewis is the latest artist to be signed to Elektra’s Low Country Records, and hearing her sing live makes it obvious why the label felt the need to scoop her up. Her emotional power still comes through in recorded format, including on her new single, “Lost In a Dream.”

The husband-and-wife duo the War and Treaty will have a big presence during Grammy week, parlaying their nomination for best new artist into multiple performances on- and off-screen throughout the days leading up to and including the telecast. But the Grammys were destined not to be the only awards show this season that would afford them a high profile. On Monday night’s Emmys, the couple joined Charlie Puth for a properly emotional In Memoriam segment that segued from the country-soul duo offering harmonies on Puth’s elegiac “See You Again” to taking more of the lead on a balladic version of the “Friends” theme,” “I’ll Be There,” that took it from Rembrandts territory to the land of Ashford and Simpson.

After a half-century as an Oak Ridge Boy, singer Joe Bonsall has announced his retirement more than four years after being diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder.
The announcement, made during a concert Saturday in Greenville, Ms, comes amid increased speculation about Bonsall among fans of the country music group. During the show at Harlow’s Casino Resort, Bonsall officially handed over the mic to his touring replacement, singer Ben James.
Since 1973, Bonsall’s tenor vocals and high harmonies have been an integral part of the Oak Ridge Boys sound, including on such crossover hits as “Elvira” and “Bobbie Sue.”

Shortly after Halle Bailey and Rachel Zegler were crowned real-life Disney princesses, they met for the first time at a ball — the 2021 Met Gala, to be exact. It was the beginning not only of a beautiful friendship, but of a new era for Disney. Bailey became the first Black Ariel in Rob Marshall’s live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” based on Disney’s beloved 1989 animated film. Zegler — who used to dress up as Snow White as a little girl — will embody a Latina fairy-tale heroine who befriends seven CGI-created dwarves in 2025’s “Snow White.”

With Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” looking to continue its reign at the top spot of the box office, it’s time to consider the most sonorous secret to its success: its original, bluegrass-tinted song selection, including a theme written and produced by Dave Cobb (with lyrics from “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins), and sung soulfully by the film’s star, Rachel Zegler.
Reaching back to the 2020 prequel novel by Suzanne Collins that the movie is based on, Zegler points out how clearly Appalachian Lucy was, and how her accent exists in that vernacular throughout the duration of the novel, something that was destined to carry over into the music.
“District 12, where we exist canonically, lies in North Carolina and the Appalachian Mountains,” says Zegler, speaking from New York. “I’m glad Francis wanted to explore that — he even sent me the trailer for...

Actress Rachel Zegler didn’t see any pressure to stepping into the world of author Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” prequel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” And she certainly could have, with actress Jennifer Lawrence crafting an iconic character in Katniss Everdeen over a series of four movies. But for Zegler, playing District 12’s Lucy Gray Baird, who is inducted into the first ever Hunger Games meant she didn’t have to fill big shoes, especially in contrast to co-star Tom Blyth, playing Panem President Coriolanus Snow.
“What I really love is Suzanne subverted expectations a bit with this woman from District 12,” Zegler told TheWrap. “So you expect her to be another Katniss because what other kind of female archetype[slash]character could keep Coriolanus haunted for 64, plus, years?” Those subverted expectations included, for Zegler, a character who is mercurial, enigmatic and who “floats above social norms.”

There are a multitude of ways to incorporate characters singing on screen in a film. Traditionally, the actors record the tracks separately from their on-set line delivery and lip-sync during the actual filming, as shown with Ryan Gosling and his army of Kens in Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie for "I'm Just Ken." But every once in a while, a filmmaker will elect to record the raw, on-set delivery of a vocal performance. Director Tom Hooper took this route with both "Les Miserables" and "Cats," with ... one turning out infinitely better than the other. There are pros and cons to both approaches, but the second option is exponentially riskier. And yet, "Hunger Games" franchise director Francis Lawrence went that route on "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" with star Rachel Zegler's performance as Lucy Gray Baird.
In the book as well as in the movie, Lucy Gray Baird is a performer.

“Hunger Games” prequel film “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is full of references to the four films that come after it, but the biggest connection between this movie and those is musical.
As sourced in Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel, Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) wrote “The Hanging Tree” inspired by historical events in District 12, which she and Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) both witnessed. The song takes on more meaning when imbued with the backstory of Panem and how President Snow came to be as the Hunger Games also developed.
“Hunger Games” fans will remember it’s a song that Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen sings in “Mockingjay.” Producer Nina Jacobson, who has produced all the “Hunger Games” movies, told TheWrap that music is key to this franchise.
“What I loved was that this adaptation really made me think about how critical music has always been to these movies. I...

Religiosity isn’t a particularly good look lately, at least as it’s being performed by politicians. Artists, though — especially one the caliber of Jamaica’s Samory-Tour Frazer, a.k.a. Samory I — can still conjure the unifying power, beauty and healing that religion sometimes brings. Samory made this clear on Black Gold, his promising 2017 debut, with its Rastafarian calling card “Rasta Nuh Gangsta,” a policy brief to a local cop book-ended by Nyabinghi drumming and a potent dub breakdown. And his new album Strength is, even more so, a...

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes might be dressed up like a prequel in its early roots story of villain-to-be Coriolanus Snow, and some might think that Rachel Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird is just an early days Katniss from District 12.
However, those hasty generalizations would rob the film of its sublime uniqueness, for at its core this sci-fi political action thriller has the underpinnings of a sublime romantic country western musical, and when you finally see it, you’ll get what we mean.
Setting this Hunger Games by filmmaker Francis Lawrence apart from his last three with Jennifer Lawrence are the raw and rugged, rural Scottish and Irish influenced ballads sung by Rachel Zegler’s Lucy, who is a member of the Covey, a traveling musician group.
Beamed actor Tom Blyth about Lucy’s songs at the Los Angeles Premiere last night for the Lionsgate movie which opens on Nov.

When rock and pop A-listers have needed a world-class country singer to sing on their song over the past few years, they usually call Chris Stapleton. Since his last album, 2020’s Starting Over, the 45 year-old traditionalist has duetted with Taylor Swift and Adele, written songs with Santana, and collaborated with Tom Morello and Pink. But that doesn’t mean he’s no longer a country centrist, having worked with everyone from Carly Pearce to Morgan Wallen to Willie Nelson.

Chris Stapleton might be having the busiest week in Nashville. Just two days before the release of his fifth album, Higher, the 45-year-old singer performed “White Horse,” the album’s storming lead single, on this year’s CMA Awards.
Backed by his core band, including wife Morgan Stapleton on vocals, and with Paul Franklin on pedal steel, Stapleton delivered a spine-chilling rendition of the mid-tempo rocker, which he co-wrote with Semisonic’s Dan Wilson. Stapleton is no stranger to the power of the CMA platform: it was only eight years...

The case for Shooter Jennings as one of the premier producers in music grows more compelling by the day, and you’d get no argument from Tanya Tucker.
“He always listens to my heart,” Tucker tells Rolling Stone, offering a simple reason for Jennings’ rise behind the console.
For Jennings, such a sentiment has been more than enough validation for his 2022 decision to step away from his own touring and songwriting career to focus full-time on his studio work.

Whenever someone says that the classic rock sound is dead, another band comes around to try and bring it back. Greta Van Fleet’s Starcatcher album was inspired by the music of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. The record was also connected to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll himself, Elvis Presley.
Greta Van Fleet’s ‘Starcatcher’ uses some of The Beatles’ 1960s and 1970s techniques
Greta Van Fleet is possibly the modern band that’s most inspired by the rock music of the 1960s and 1970s. They’ve been compared to Led Zeppelin by critics and fans over and over. During a 2023 interview with Forbes, Greta Van Fleet’s Sam Kiszka discussed working on the album Starcatcher. He said producer Dave Cobb used many of the same recording techniques The Beatles utilized in the 1960s and 1970s. Greta Van Fleet’s Josh Kiszka said Cobb’s...

Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” will never be used as evocatively as it was in Miami Vice’s 1984 pilot — Fire up the Spyder, Crockett, and load that shotgun, Tubbs! — but Monday Night Football isn’t afraid to try. ESPN’s football franchise teamed up Snoop Dogg, Chris Stapleton, and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana to remake Collins’ 1981 hit as a brand-new opening theme.

Chris Stapleton has announced that his fifth studio album, Higher, will drop on November 10th via Mercury Nashville. As a preview, he’s also shared the record’s first single, “White Horse.” Listen to the song below.
Co-produced by Stapleton along with his wife Morgane Stapleton and his longtime collaborator Dave Cobb, Higher is the first LP from the 45-year-old country star since 2020’s Starting Over. The 14-track album will “span genres and defy easy categorization,” according to a press release. Pre-orders are ongoing.
The single “White Horse” certainly suggests that Stapleton is leaning into his strengths as a cross-genre act. Lyrics about cowboys “ridin’ off into the sunset” create a classic country vibe, but the electric guitar-driven arrangement feels akin to straight-up rock music, with a thick wall of sound delivering the powerful harmonic progression, and a guitar solo that’s a whole lot closer to Lynyrd Skynyrd than Chet Atkins.

Greta Van Fleet have shared their third album, titled Starcatcher. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
The album was recorded in Nashville by the band and Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb over sessions that guitarist Jake Kiszka described in a statement as “very instinctual.” For Starcatcher, the Michigan quartet aimed to strike at big questions like “What is this consciousness that we have, and where did it come from?” as posited by bassist Sam Kiszka, while also digging deeper into their mythical lore by revisiting concepts from their previous work, including 2021’s The Battle at Garden’s Gate.
“We had this idea that we wanted to tell these stories to build a universe,” drummer Danny Wagner shared. “We wanted to introduce characters and motifs and these ideas that would come about here and there throughout our careers through this world.”

There’s no way around it, so just let’s say it: On album number three, Greta Van Fleet still want to get the Led out. Despite being praised or damned for its fealty to the hammering of certain gods, the Michigan band is still not remotely backing down from its mission.
