Concept Art by Francisco Ruiz-Velasco Pacific Rim Synopsis - When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse. Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro,...

If the phrase, “giant robots and monsters” alone doesn’t move you out of the house to see Guillermo del Toro’s latest film, Pacific Rim, then I’ll try to impart my enthusiasm to your decision.
The world is being threatened by insurmountable odds as monstrous Kaiju (Japanese for “strange beast”) are surfacing to Earth by way of a cosmic breach in the Pacific Ocean in southeast Asia. Understanding that this was a global threat, the world powers united and funded a program constructing giant robots called Jaegers, manned by humans to combat Kaijus. But with each monster that comes through, the Kaiju become more deadly and learns how to stop the Jaegers. America’s Jaeger, “Gipsy Danger” was manned by two brothers, Raleigh (Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam) and Yancy Becket (Diego Klattenhoff) until one Kaiju nearly destroyed it; Raleigh is forced into hiding.

We got some goodies from Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim for you today.
First, in an interview with the La Times’ Hero Complex, Guillermo Del Toro discusses his vision for the monsters/robots film. He had this to say, along with a helluva lot more, in the video below: “I felt there was a chance to do something fresh, something new that at the same time was conscious of the heritage, but not a pastiche or an homage or a greatest hits of everything…One of the first things I did is make it a point to not check any old movies or any other references. Like start from scratch.”
Secondly, below the clip, there’s an interview that was left over from Comic-Con that delves even deeper into Pacific Rim, courtesy of Uruloki.
Uruloki: You worked with Francisco Ruiz Velasco, Guy Davis and Henry Fong in the design of the creatures or Kaijus.

From a make-up effects standpoint, the highlight of Hellboy 2 is the troll market sequence, which is an eye-popping variety of bizarre creatures created by the team at Spectral Motion as well as a number of smaller European shops. The London-based Creature Effects, for example, built a handful of specialty characters based on designs by concept artists Wayne Barlowe and Francisco Ruiz Velasco. .The Limb Vendor is a Barlowe design,. explained company co-founder Cliff Wallace, .and his head is basically a big bone with goggles and a mask.
