This is the winter of discontent for Hollywood workers, as no level of seniority has been spared from the wave of mass layoffs.
Warner Bros. has been shaken by two rounds of layoffs and a wholesale restructuring that have ushered out veterans with decades of service to the Hollywood studio.
NBCUniversal has rewired the structure of its TV content production and distribution operations, leading to hundreds of job cuts. ViacomCBS has periodically shed bodies by the dozens in the year since its two halves formally tied the knot again in December 2019. AMC Networks last week disclosed it will let go of 10% of its U.S. workforce, or about 100 staffers.
Discovery Inc., Sony Pictures and Lionsgate have also let sizable numbers of staffers go in 2020.
And Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s short-form video streaming service Quibi shut down just six months after a much-ballyhooed launch last April, leaving thousands of executives jobless.

I’ve been an entertainment journalist for more than three decades, and I truly cannot recall a time when one media company went through as much extreme management upheaval over such a short, concentrated period of time as WarnerMedia.
Since this past August, three months after former Hulu chief Jason Kilar took the reins as CEO, there has been a mass departure of senior executives from a studio that for many, many years was considered the most stable of all the Hollywood giants.
I get it. New regimes always bring about change. Movie scripts and TV projects in development get tossed out. Overall deals get scrutinized. And, yes, some veteran executives get shown the door as the incoming leader reorganizes and puts his or her own team in place. But the sheer number of senior managers to exit over the past three months has been startling by any measure.

Add marketing executive at WarnerMedia to the endangered species list. In the space of two weeks, the media and entertainment giant has bid farewell to a dizzying array of marketing gurus, leaving major holes in the top executive ranks.
In short order, Jim Gallagher stepped down from his Warner Bros post as executive vice president of marketing animation and family films, Warner Bros Television Group President and Chief Marketing Officer Lisa Gregorian announced she would leave at the end of 2020, and Warner Bros. Co-President of Worldwide Marketing Jp Richards said he would exit in February. On Friday, news broke that Blair Rich, head of worldwide marketing at Warner Bros., was out, following months of rumors that her job was in jeopardy.
The spin from WarnerMedia is that some of the executives involved in this exodus did so of their own accord and that their departures were entirely organic. Their exits,...

Scott Rowe, a longtime communications executive for Warner Bros. TV Group, is exiting the studio after nearly 30 years.
Rowe’s post as senior VP of communications and domestic market has been eliminated as part of the broader restructuring and downsizing that has transformed the storied studio and its WarnerMedia parent company. The depth of the changes at Warner Bros., once Hollywood’s undisputed leader in film and TV production, have been jarring to entertainment industry veterans.
Rowe joined Warner Bros. in early 1994 after seven years with Fox, starting out as manager of publicity for the Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution syndication unit. He steadily rose through the ranks and added marketing duties in addition to PR and communications on behalf of various Wbtv units. He worked closely with longtime Wbtv marketing chief Lisa Gregorian, whose departure amid the restructuring was confirmed Monday.

The DC FanDome event on Saturday was a grand experiment by WarnerMedia to see if DC Comics fans would congregate virtually for what amounted to an eight-hour string of programming about DC’s movies, TV shows and video games.
“We really wanted to put together an event that would super-serve the fans,” Warner Bros. TV group president and chief marketing officer Lisa Gregorian tells Variety.
It appears that experiment was a resounding success.
According to the studio, the DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes event generated 22 million views across 220 countries and territories over its 24-hour run, via the in-house player, livestreams by comic book influencers and other content generated by fans watching the event.
The film, TV and video game trailers released during DC FanDome — including for “Wonder Woman 1984,” “The Batman” and the Snyder Cut of “Justice League” — have pulled in over 150 million views since Saturday.

Pete Buttigieg and Joe Biden were each in Los Angeles on Friday for campaign swings, but the former South Bend mayor also did some fundraising before showbiz-centric crowds.
At an evening event at the Sherman Oaks home of Lisa Gregorian, chief marketing officer for Warner Bros. Television Group, Buttigieg took questions from the group of donors and guests.
Among them: What about the possibility that President Donald Trump would not show up for general election debates?
According to a pool report, Buttigieg said that they need to make sure that there is a “price to be paid” if Trump refuses to debate, and said that skipping the event would be a “show of weakness.”

It’s a huge event. And we love it. But does Comic-Con matter? Does it really matter, at the end of the day, if a TV show or movie has a presence at the San Diego mega-event? Does it genuinely make a noticeable impact in a project’s popularity if the conference’s hardcore fans tweet their approval? Or is Comic-Con to the entertainment industry simply like an office holiday party that everybody feels like they must attend — you know, just to be seen.
Once, the annual #Sdcc, which gets underway today, was actually a comic book event. Then it added memorabilia and movies.

On tap for you guys right now courtesy of THR are your first looks at the promotional art for the new (and returning) television series "The Following," "Supernatural," "The Vampire Diaries," and "666 Park Avenue."
Warner Bros. Television should have no trouble making a splash at Comic-Con. The studio -- which is hosting 14 panels for shows including Fox’s "The Following," CBS’ "The Big Bang Theory," CW’s "The Vampire Diaries" and "ABC’s 666 Park Avenue" -- continues to have a bigger presence at the fan convention than anyone else on the TV front.
As part of the push, three Wbtv properties -- "Big Bang," "Fringe" and "Supernatural" -- will hold events in the 7,500-person Hall H, which traditionally has been reserved for film panels. "You're starting to see TV take a different position at Comic-Con, one we didn’t see five to seven years ago," says Wbtv chief marketing officer Lisa Gregorian.
