During his senior year of college at Yeshiva, a small Jewish university in Washington Heights, New York City, Ryan Turell averaged 27.1 points per game — leading all of men’s college basketball. Some came to calling him “the Jewish Larry Bird,” given his blond mop and prowess from long distance, shooting over 46% from beyond the three-point arc. In 2022, the Motor City Cruise, the Detroit Pistons’ G League affiliate, selected him 27th overall in the NBA G League Draft. And with that, Turell made history.

‘Uncut Gems’ Directors Josh and Benny Safdie Almost Cast Kobe Bryant Before Landing on Kevin Garnett
Josh and Benny Safdie’s merciless assault on the senses, “Uncut Gems,” is now in theaters from A24, with the film’s star Adam Sandler turning out a startling performance that both showcases his singular gifts while revealing new ones. Not since “Punch-Drunk Love” has the comic actor delivered such an unhinged, yet emotionally nuanced turn.
He stars as the eccentric, abrasive Howard Ratner, a NYC jewelery dealer who is splitting up with his fed-up wife (Idina Menzel) and has all but alienated his children. One of the film’s subplots revolves around a rare gem that Howard has imported to his shop, which he ends up lending to real-life basketball player Kevin Garnett. However, according to a new interview with Vulture, the Safdies originally designed the film around Kobe Bryant, and also considered NBA players Amar’e Stoudemire and Joel Embiid.

We have plenty of movie coverage here at HitFix — including Drew's rave review of this film from SXSW — but as happens when I see a film relatively early in its run, and particularly one like "Trainwreck" with a fair amount of crossover with what I cover in TV, I like to offer up a few of my thoughts, as well as a place for people who have seen the film to start discussing it. Again, this review is designed for people who've already seen "Trainwreck," and thus will have plenty of spoilers, coming up just as soon as we split the check... Amy Schumer is on an incredible roll right now. She just finished perhaps the strongest season to date of "Inside Amy Schumer" — and the "12 Angry Men" spoof is an early contender for 2015's best episode of television — and "Trainwreck" is a terrific movie introduction for her as both actress and writer.

Directed by Judd Apatow, the new comedy "Trainwreck" will premiere at SXSW next month for a "work in progress" screening, eight years after he screened a work in progress version of "Knocked Up" at the same festival. The film was written by Amy Schumer, who also stars alongside Bill Hader. While plot details are being kept firmly under wraps, the film reportedly follows a woman with an aversion to monogamy trying to rebuild her messy life with a serious boyfriend, while simultaneously trying to balance her career and relationships with her father, sister and best friend. The film also stars Vanessa Bayer and Brie Larson, and features a huge ensemble, including Lebron James, Colin Quinn, Ezra Miller, John Cena, Barkhad Abdi, Mike Birbiglia, Jon Glaser, Daniel Radcliffe, Marissa Tomei, Amar'e Stoudemire and more. Check out the trailer below:Here is the trailer for @TrainwreckMovie #Trainwreck We are very proud. I hope you like it.

It has been three years since Judd Apatow's middle age dramedy "This Is 40," and he's mostly been busy since, working his producer muscles on "Girls," "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," and "Begin Again." But he's back in feature length form with "Trainwreck," his big summer comedy, and the first trailer for the movie has arrived today. Amy Schumer (who also wrote the film) and Bill Hader lead the effort, about which plot details have mostly been kept under wraps, but will reportedly center on a woman trying to rebuild her life, with a boyfriend, parent and best friend all in the mix of characters she's dealing with. And the ensemble for this one is huge, with LeBron James, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn, Vanessa Bayer, Ezra Miller, John Cena, Barkhad Abdi, Mike Birbiglia, Jon Glaser, Daniel Radcliffe, Marisa Tomei, Amar'e Stoudemire, and more slated to make appearances. Grant Hill has just retired after playing 19 seasons in the NBA and he is wasting no time in getting into family activities. The AP reports that Saturday night (June 8), Hill was on hand to support his wife Tamia as she performed a concert in New York.
At the Highline Ballroom in Manhattan, Hill and fellow NBA-er Amar'e Stoudemire sat in the VIP section and cheered on Tamia as she performed an R&B set for a couple hundred people in the venue.
Tamia reportedly acknowledged Hill before singing "Still," saying, "We're celebrating almost 15 years of marriage."
The 38-year-old singer was up for two Grammys in 2013 for her fifth studio album, "Beautiful Surprise." They were her fifth and sixth Grammy nominations overall since her 1998 self-titled debut album.

New York Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire and wife Alexis, who were married in Dec. 12 in New York City, tell People they are expecting their fourth child together later this spring.
"We're blessed that we were able to extend our family. We're both huge on having a nice size family. It was something we've been taking about for a while. But it happened naturally and at the right time so it all worked out," Stoudemire tells People.
Alexis adds, "It was just perfect timing."
The couple already have three children -- Ar'e, 7, Amar'e Jr., 6, and Assata, 4. Alexis says all the children are "very, very excited," adding they can't wait to know if it's a boy or a girl.
The couple plans to have another wedding this summer, after the NBA season is over, which Amar'e says will be a "big, extravagant Cinderella wedding for Alexis!"...

"The Mindy Project" is about to get a little bit taller.
The new Fox comedy starring Mindy Kaling ("The Office") will welcome three basketball-playing guest stars in an upcoming episode: NBA players Amar'e Stoudemire, Baron Davis and Danny Granger will all appear as themselves in episode 4 of the show.
Why would there be basketball players in a comedy about a romantic gynecologist? That's because even medical doctors need to blow off steam sometimes. Dr. Mindy Lahiri and some of her co-workers will spend part of the episode at a nightclub, according to a report from EW.com. While there, Mindy somehow winds up in the VIP section, hanging out with the three NBA players.
Stoudemire is a forward for the New York Knicks, Granger is a forward for the Indiana Pacers and Baron Davis is a free agent who most recently was with the Knicks. All three are significantly taller than Mindy Kaling.
