The animated X-Men are about to make their return to TV in "X-Men '97." This Disney+ series is basically a thirty-year-late sixth season of 1992's "X-Men," the first cartoon about the Marvel Comics superhero team.
The "X-Men" comics kept chugging along through highs and lows while their animated counterparts were in limbo, though. At SXSW 2024, Marvel previewed the comics' future. A relaunch is coming to "X-Men" in Summer 2024 under the banner "From The Ashes," the follow-up to the ongoing "Fall of X." There'll be three primary series at first:
"X-Men" by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman. Cyclops and Magneto will lead a traditional X-Men superhero team based in Alaska.
"Uncanny X-Men" by Gail Simone and David Marquez. "Outlaw" lovebirds Gambit and Rogue head to New Orleans with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee in tow.
"Extraordinary X-Men" by Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero. Set in Chicago, Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost...

Marvel Comics' "The Defenders" #4, supporting the upcoming Marvel TV/Netflix TV series, starring 'Jessica Jones', 'Daredevil', 'Iron Fist' and 'Luke Cage', is written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by David Marquez, with a cover by Marquez, available August 9, 2017:
"...the streets of the 'Marvel Universe' have exploded into chaos and the only thing standing...
"...in between the innocent people of New York and that chaos are the 'Defenders'.

Marvel can seemingly never get their timing right when it comes to the Netflix series obvious tie-ins. Recently both the Luke Cage and Jessica Jones solo series came out long after their Netflix shows debuted, and now Defenders is being released months before the show hits. Clearly Marvel is hoping this will allow for the first trade to be released right around the time people first start watching the show. Knowing Marvel’s uncanny knack for delays who knows if that will actually happen.
This Defender’s universe has slowly been building throughout this year. Daredevil and Jessica Jones had their books deep in their run and then this year we got the debuts of Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Bullseye, Electra, Kingpin, and now finally The Defenders. Not all these books will directly tie to one another but do help in shaping the more grounded street level side of the Marvel universe.
Tonally this has the most in common with Brian Michael Bendis’s current Jessica Jones series. It does not carry the mature label but it is delving into some more adult topics like drugs and gang level violence. Clearly, they were attempting to recapture much of what made the Netflix shwos such a popular and critical success.
As often is the case with number one issues for team books this is your standard version of getting the band back together. Diamondback is back from the dead and reeking havoc on the city streets. Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones have found out Diamondback has returned the hard way as each was attacked in broad daylight. Concerned with how daring these attacks are they all team up to track down Diamondback before he gets the chance to strike again.
There are certain characters Brian Michael Bendis was born to write and nearly all of them are in this series. I know many have grown tired of his style, and Marvel did put him on way too many series. His name may not mean what it once did for a book, but he has been kicking some major butt this past year. Jessica Jones and Iron Man have been two of Marvel’s best titles and this adds another to his growing list of great books. All these characters already have an established familiarity with one another so all Bendis had to do was restart that button. The book is not without its faults. Giving Diamondback a calling card of leaving diamonds on his victims is unnecessarily cheesy and out of place. There is a chance it is a move that has greater meaning, currently it feels like something a generic James Bond villain would do.
When David Marquez was told he was drawing this book Marvel defiantly advised him to be heavily influenced by the Netflix series. He avoids the sin of photo referencing as characters like Luke Cage and Jessica Jones resemble their current real life counterparts without looking like photo recreations. The character introductions were fantastic as each was given their own title card when they first appeared on screen. Maybe it is a little on the nose but it made the appearance of each character feel super important and I could see blowing up each of those panels to make some great looking posters.
Sometimes a book just feels right and that is the case with The Defenders. My excitement for The Defenders Netflix series took a hit due to the failure of Iron Fist. Reading this though I can see the amazing potential a story can have when these characters come together. Hopefully whoever is making that show was given this comic with the straightforward direction of ‘Do This’, because this is the type of story that could work in any medium.

Something we’ve seen from various comic book publishers in recent years is an attempt to align their titles with their big and small screen counterparts. Although the source material inspires the live action adaptations, it doesn’t hurt to when the former takes a few cues from the latter. After all, new readers are often hooked when they see something comparable to a movie or TV show they love.
Marvel is certainly no stranger to doing this, as evidenced by their recently launched All-New Guardians of the Galaxy and The Defenders series. No doubt capitalizing on the highly anticipated Netflix show set to premiere this August, it came as no surprise that the House of Ideas opted to have the comic book lineup of the team – Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones – mirror that of what can be seen on the small screen.
So, it’s certainly no shocker that the inaugural issue sold like hotcakes and is going back to press for a second printing. Perhaps the various reasons we listed above had something to do with its immense popularity, but it’s also fair to assume that boasting a creative team such as writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez might’ve had something to do with it. After all, Bendis has been one of the chief voices at Marvel in recent years and has to instil at least some measure of consumer confidence, to say the least.
Had you missed your chance to pick up The Defenders #1, know that the second printing will arrive in comic shops on July 26. But, before then, be sure to check out issue #2 when it hits stands on June 28.

Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
The massive release this week, the one everyone is going to be talking about, is Dark Days: The Forge #1 from DC Comics by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Jim Lee, Andy Kubert and John Romita Jr. This is an absolute must-read for DC Comics die-hards, and while I won’t spoil anything here, so much happens in this one comic that sets up the future of both Snyder and Greg Capullo...

The streets of New York’s Hell’s Kitchen have become over run with crime and corruption, and there is only one group of Super Heroes, The Defenders – Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist – who are willing to unshackle themselves from the constraints of the rest of the Marvel Super Hero community and fight the villains no one else is willing to take on… Oh and did we mention this is the same group of heroes that make up the Netflix Marvel universe? We already knew that it was probably on the way, but Marvel has officially announced today that The Defenders will launch this June. We’ll get our first taste of it in a Free Comic Book Day offering in May, while it’s also been confirmed that the series will reunite Civil War II creative team Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez.
Starring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, this is a very different version of The Defenders, though fans of Marvel’s TV shows on Netflix will obviously recognize the line-up. After all, it’s later this year that these heroes will assemble on the online streaming service, but this is the first time a team like this will be brought together in the comic books (past iterations of the team have been made up of the likes of Doctor Strange, Namor and the Hulk)

At the moment, Marvel Comics is periodically publishing Civil War II, a follow-up series (albeit in a rejigged universe) to the iconic run that inspired the Russo brother’s Captain America: Civil War movie.
To keep the stakes high, writer Brian Michael Bendis has opted to kill off a major Avenger. Don’t scroll pass our trusty spoiler squirrel, Daphne, unless you want to know who it is...
Still here? Okay. It’s Bruce Banner that Bendis has opted to kill off. After an Inhuman named Ulysses prophesised that Banner was about to Hulk out, abandon his secluded hideout and murder some Avengers, Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye) took matters into his own hands and sent an arrow flying into Banner’s eye, killing him stone dead.

Though issue #3 only comes out next week on the 13th, thanks to Cbr we have a first look at the main and variant covers for the seventh and final instalment in Marvel's latest event, Civil War II. The Marko Djurdjevic cover features a showdown between the leaders of both sides of the divide, while Ulysses looks on. Many fans predict that Tony Stark will be the ultimate casualty of this war (the fact that he's not depicted on the Divided We Stand cover would seem to back that up), and things definitely don't bode well for the Armoured Avenger in this image. There's also Michael Cho's variant, which is presented in the style of an old-school boxing promo poster. It was strongly hinted at in this year's Free Comic Book Day special from Marvel, but Civil War II #1 from Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez did indeed feature War Machine and She-Hulk (two characters Marvel has tried and failed on multiple occasions to make work in their own titles) biting the dust at the hands of the Mad Titan, Thanos. Asked if Rhodey really is dead and gone, Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort told Newsarama: "I don’t want to be too coy about this. As far as the story is concerned, Rhodey is dead. You’ve given me the opportunity to play the game where I tease that he may still be out there, but that’s not what this moment is about. This moment is legitimately about Rhodey being down. So not outright showing that is, as you said, good taste. I could play games with you,...

"Civil War II" is the sequel to Marvel Comics' "Civil War" (2006) by writer Brian Michael Bendis and illustrators David Marquez and Justin Ponsor.

Since we are all up to our eyeballs in Captain America: Civil War news and clips and interviews and reviews, I thought it was time for something entirely different: variant covers for Marvel’s upcoming event series Civil War II. One of these showed up in my twitter feed, and some sleuthing turned up a whole series over at Comicosity. Each issue of the big event series will also have a variant cover by Michael Cho, and the variants will also be available as lithographs.
Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso says of the series, “If anyone proves that ‘less is more,’ it’s Michael Cho. Rest assured that not a single brushstroke will be wasted in any of his propaganda-influenced Civil War II covers, each of them a call to arms. Who’s side are you on?”
Civil War II involves an Inhuman who is able to predict future crimes.

Marvel Comics has finally revealed the two opposing sides of superheroes in their upcoming event series, Civil War II. The story revolves around a new Inhuman who has the ability to see crimes before they occur. It's got that little Minority Report twist to it. The superheroes are then put in a situation where that have choose whether or not to use this Inhuman’s power to wield “predictive justice.”
The heroes in favor of predictive justice and part of the "change the future" side are led by Captain Marvel. She is joined by the Winter Soldier, the Blue Marvel, She-Hulk, Spectrum, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, Medusa, Vision, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Captain America (Steve Rogers), and War Machine.

While all of the previous Civil War II teasers were super-serious, it's only natural that the teaser for Deadpool contains a bit of humor. Civil War II kicks off in Marvel's Fcbd offering, which is celebrated on May 7th. The first issue of Civil War ships in June. Brian Michael Bendis is writing the series, with art from David Marquez. Marvel's Civil War II will pit two factions - led by Captain Marvel and Iron Man at odds over the fate of an Inhuman that can predict crimes before they happen. Captain Marvel leads a group that wants to apprehend the criminals before they actually commit the crimes while Iron Man leads a group that's adamant that punishment can't occur before the crime is actually committed. Iron Man's stance is definitely softer than his position in the original Civil War conflict with Captain America where he wanted superheroes to...

Marvel.com has released a first look at inked pages from Civil War II, but are they enough to change your mind about this seemingly shameless cash grab? "David Marquez and [colorist] Justin Ponsor are poised to plus up the work they recently did with [writer] Brian [Michael Bendis] on Invincible Iron Man—and if you saw what they did on that series, you have an inkling of the kind of game they'll be bringing to bear on Civil War II," says series editor Tom Brevoort. "As you can imagine, there'll be a ton more characters in this project than there was in Invincible Iron Man, as can be seen on these pages from the first issue. This is just the tip of the iceberg." More details about Civil War II should be revealed in the coming weeks, so be sure to stay tuned to Cbm for updates!

Marvel Comics
Marvel recently announced plans for Civil War II, and seeing as it’s been nearly a decade since the original, it’s actually pretty surprising that they’ve taken this long to cash in on the success that series found.
With Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez replacing Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, the sequel will avoid revisiting the Superhuman Registration Act by instead focusing on the emergence of an Inhuman with power to calculate the outcome of future events with a high degree of accuracy. The Marvel Universe’s heroes are divided on how best to utilise such abilities, with Captain Marvel leading a team who believe that stopping future crimes is a must, and Iron Man taking charge of a squad disgusted by the idea of arresting people for acts they may or may not commit.
So, you know, it’s basically Minority Report with superheroes.

Civil War is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a decade after Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's historic event series, a follow up will take place in the world of the comics from the creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez. "Civil War was a seismic event that demanded the attention of existing fans and created new ones because it tapped into the most pressing question of its day," says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. "Civil War II will do the same." Bendis meanwhile adds: "The original Civil War is one of the most important Marvel comics ever, and we are all very excited to have come up with what we hope is a story worthy of the title. If you are scared of earth shattering Marvel events where no one is safe…be afraid, be very afraid." Are you interested in a Civil War which pits Iron Man...

Here it is, after a needless and mysterious six month delay, Uncanny X-Men #600 has finally been released. There are two prevailing theories as to why Marvel chose to push back the release date from May, the time that all their series were wrapping up, to November, when Marvel was in the midst of creating their new status quo. Marvel either wanted to use this anniversary issue as a springboard to their new status quo but feared that the six month gap between the original release date and the debut of their all-new #1’s may cause readers to lose interest.
