In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

The Gold is returning for a second season on BBC. The first season was a partnership between BBC and Paramount+, but Deadline reports that the streaming service is not involved with season two. Production on the new episodes will begin in January.
Starring Hugh Bonneville, Dominic Cooper, Jack Lowden, Charlotte Spencer, Tom Cullen, Emun Elliott, Sean Harris, Ellora Torchia, Stefanie Martini, Daniel Ings, and Adam Nagaitis, the series follows the events surrounding an actual 1983 bank heist where the robbers find £26m inside the vault. We revealed the main cast last year in April, and returning cast Hugh Bonneville, Charlotte Spencer, Emun Elliott, Tom Cullen, Stefanie Martini and Sam Spruell are confirmed for season 2. Further casting is set to follow at a later date with filming set to begin in January 2024. Season one also starred the likes of Jack Lowdon and Dominic Cooper.
Spoiler Alert: The season 2 plot will follow what happened to the half of the Brinks-Mat gold stolen in the daring 1983 raid, after police realise those they convicted didn’t have all of it.

BBC One’s latest crime drama, The Gold, tells a story so far-fetched it’s hard to believe it could have really happened.
But the story of how six men accidentally stole more than £27m worth of gold bullion is, in fact, completely true.
The six-part series focuses on the Brink’s-Mat robbery of 1983, and its far-reaching consequences.
You can read about the remarkable true story that inspired the series here.
But which parts of the series are rooted in truth, and which ones are fabricated for the purposes of its story?
Here’s a quick guide to sorting fact from fiction…
The robbery itself is recreated accurately to all historical accounts. The robbers did in fact pour gasoline on the security staff at the Brink’s-Mat depot, and threatened to set them alight if they didn’t provide them access to the vault.

How do you tell the story of a heist, when the heist isn’t the story? In 1983, six masked burglars broke into a warehouse on a trading estate near Heathrow. They were looking to crack into a vault, but when the security guards failed to provide a passcode – even when doused in petrol and threatened with a naked flame – attention turned to the glistening stash outside the vault. And this is where the story of The Gold, BBC One’s new six-part retelling of the Brink’s-Mat robbery, begins. This isn’t the story of a heist, but of what happened next.
“How do you shift three tonnes of gold?” asks Charlotte Spencer’s Rotherhithe local copper, Nicki. “Slowly,” replies her partner Tony (Emun Elliott). There are other adverbs he might have chosen: agonisingly, complicatedly, infuriatingly. Instead of the expected million quid in the vault, the team of low-level crooks...

Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...

Hugh Bonneville has torn into former prime minister Boris Johnson, calling him “a man of no principle whatsoever”.
Speaking in a new interview with The Independent, Bonneville, 59, said: “Our lack of leadership is quite stunning. The vacuity of the last two or three secretaries of state for culture is embarrassing. The same goes for our recent foreign secretaries, among whom I count Boris Johnson, a man of no principle whatsoever.”
The actor, who can next be seen in the BBC’s new primetime Sunday night drama The Gold, also lamented the state of the NHS under the Conservative government.
Bonneville, whose father was a doctor and mother was a nurse, said: “I’m hugely worried about the future of the NHS… In the 1970s, dealing with patients directly was the centre of [my parents’] world, and not filling in forms.
“Now the NHS is a vast institution that is not fit for purpose.

It all began with six men in a van. On the 26 November 1983, half a dozen armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat depot near London’s Heathrow Airport, where they were expecting to find a million pounds worth of foreign currency.
Instead, they stumbled upon gold bullion worth £26m.
At the time, it was the largest robbery in world history and changed British policing forever.
The case is being dramatised in a new BBC One drama, starring Hugh Bonneville, Jack Lowden, Dominic Cooper, Charlotte Spencer, and Tom Cullen.
Here’s what we know about it…
What happened on 26 November?
At first, it just seemed like “a typical Old Kent Road armed robbery”, in the words of detectives at the time.
The gang, some carrying guns, surprised security staff as they started their Saturday shift between 6.30am and 8.15am at the warehouse.

Exclusive: Jack Lowden, star of forthcoming TV mini-series The Gold, and Apple TV+ hit, Slow Horses, believes that actors should stick to what they know best and to not allow their political opinions to get in the way of their work.
As far as he’s concerned, ”you’re not an actor ” when “you’re sort of political.”

Lady Esther Babington received her happy ending in the Sanditon Season 2 finale, and it turns out that ending was final, as the character will not be back for the upcoming third season. As reported by TVLine, Charlotte Spencer, who played Esther on the PBS period drama, will not be returning for Season 3. The news comes after the actress joined the cast of the new BBC/Paramount+ drama series The Gold. Speaking to Decider, Sanditon showrunner Justin Young said, “I think where we leave [Esther] at the end of Season 2, she’s got everything she’s ever wanted. She’s happy, married, and now she has a child that she adores, so I think that’s the end of Esther’s story as far as I’m concerned.” He continued: “I’ve always said with respect to this show, the way we built it is that, like a novel. A beloved Sanditon character has already met her fateful end. Charlotte Spencer, who played Esther on the PBS period drama's first two seasons, will not be returning for its third, according to TVLine. Season two of Sanditon, which is based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel, which found Esther suffering from laudanum poisoning at the hands of Edward (Jack Fox), ended on a positive note for often-maligned character. Esther, who previously had a miscarriage and was told she wasn't able to have children of her own, was left to raise Clara's (Lily Sacofsky) baby after she left the town of Sanditon. The writing was on the wall for Esther's exit after she got her happy...

From the outset of Amazon Studios’ new “Cinderella” movie, writer-director Kay Cannon welcomes audiences into a fantasy unlike any before it, putting a glimmering girl-boss gloss on the oft-adapted fairy tale. In this heightened unreality, characters can break into song with a Janet Jackson chart-topper as easily as they belt out a new Broadway-style power ballad. This latest retelling of the Charles Perrault classic offers a feminist-friendly update as its titular heroine dreams of a career, not a man, to whisk her away. While Cannon’s inspired creative approach and jukebox musical style all point to an elegant and empowering redesign of this most familiar of garments, her execution puts quite a few tears in the fabric.

With help from mouse-turned-footman James Corden and a genderqueer fairy godparent, Camila Cabello’s Ella gets to go to the ball in an outfit of her own creation
This musical Cinderella’s stodgy online trailer fluffed the snark glands of social media, with its warbly American Idol-style cover versions and the presence of producer-actor James Corden in a comedy mouse-turned-footman supporting role. There may even have been some unkind overexcitement at the thought of a new Cats-level debacle. But no. Actually, writer-director Kay Cannon’s new Cinderella isn’t bad, and Camila Cabello makes a rather personable lead, carrying off some of the movie’s generous helping of funny lines. Doesn’t she want to go to the ball, testily inquires genderqueer fairy godparent Fab G, played by Billy Porter. “Yes, I was just crying and singing about it,” says Cinderella thoughtfully.

In 1961, Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent), a 60-year old taxi driver, stole Goya?s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history. Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly – he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge – Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage – how and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale. Roger Michell, the son of a British diplomat, was born in South Africa and as a child lived in Beirut, Damascus and Prague.

Eight. That’s how many types of bread you can choose between in the world’s biggest sandwich franchise. And that is the reason none of us will ever be truly happy. Eight different varieties of bread, from Hearty Italian to Herb and Cheese to 9-Grain Multi-Seeded to another five, just in case those first three aren’t the most absolutely perfect breads for us.
Because we deserve the best, don’t we? If there’s another bread out there that could slightly increase our happiness, then it should be ours. It’s not enough to be satisfied that we have any bread at all, that lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise doesn’t slide out between our fingers each lunchtime; perfection is the aim, and therein lies our curse.
The first three episodes of Soulmates, a six-part relationship anthology drama with a sci-fi premise, are about the corrosive effects of the modern drive for perfected happiness.

Emmy, Grammy and Tony award-winning actor Billy Porter is continuing to change and challenge perspectives when it comes to gender norms, this time in Kay Cannon’s forthcoming live-action iteration of Cinderella at Sony. The Pose star is set to play the fairy godmother in the feature, and in a recent interview with CBS he said that he plays the character as genderless.
“It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother — they call it the Fab G,” Porter said in his CBS News interview. “Magic has no gender.”
He added that playing the role as genderless is “powerful” and that it is going to be “a classic fairytale for a new generation.”
