In the last week of March, NFL officials and team owners huddled at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando for the league’s annual winter meetings. The gathering is an important date on the NFL calendar, with changes often made to the rulebook and its media deals always a hot topic. This year, commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that with Christmas on a Wednesday in 2024, the league would be breaking out two games to play on the holiday, creating a new package that it could bring to market. It wasn’t long before Netflix reached out, according to Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s executive vp and COO of media.
“We spent a lot of time with them over the last now close to two months as part of our process — talking to everybody, but certainly a lot of time with Netflix — hearing how they think about sports on their platform, learning more about their platform,...

By now, everyone knows that Taylor Swift has “a guy on the Chiefs,” but no, the NFL did not plan the 2024-2024 schedule for the Kansas City Chiefs to make it easier for Swift to attend the team’s games.
NFL VP of broadcast planning Mike North was asked about the matter during a conference call with reporters Thursday and while he acknowledged that the league did consider Swift’s Eras Tour while building the schedule (more on that below), it was not a factor when it came to the Chiefs.
That was despite the fact that the Chiefs are set to face the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo Nov. 17, just a short drive from Toronto, where Swift is set to perform her Eras Tour between Nov. 14 and 27.

It used to be all about the trailers and the broadcast fall schedules. Now those are largely a thing of the past as the media sector’s upfront presentations to Madison Avenue ad buyers continue to evolve.
Following a week of spin and hard sales, here are eight central takeaways after Netflix, Amazon, NBCUniversal, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, YouTube and Fox made their pitches.
1. The Streaming Giants Came to Play Reese Witherspoon attends as Amazon debuts Inaugural Upfront Presentation at Pier 36 on May 14, 2024 in New York City.
This year was the first time that Netflix and Amazon had physical events in New York during upfronts week (YouTube is now in year three), and they clearly tried to make an impression, gunning for a piece of the $20 billion or so in upfront commitments that used to go exclusively to traditional entertainment companies. If there has been a consistent message from YouTube over the past couple of years, it has been built around its vast ecosystem of creators. More recently, that has been joined by artificial intelligence, with the Google-owned video platform rolling out generative AI tools for creators, and for advertising partners.
So it is no shock that creators and AI were two hot topics of conversation at YouTube’s annual Brandcast upfront event Wednesday evening.
And while there were plenty of other surprises (performances from Billie Eilish and Finneas, and K-pop stars Stray Kids; a deal to stream WNBA games on YouTube TV; and a surprise appearance from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell), the creators, as usual, were the focus of the show.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Hall of Fame player-turned-media-personality Shannon Sharpe talked about the league’s embrace of YouTube and Sharpe’s experience as a creator.
The pair appeared onstage at YouTube’s Brandcast event for advertisers in New York.
Goodell said the 2023 season was “fantastic” for a number of reasons, but “the best thing was the launch of Yt. It was flawless … they brought our game to the fans in a fresh way.”
YouTube took over the rights to Sunday Ticket last year after it had been exclusive to DirecTV for 29 years, paying a reported $14 billion in the deal. The tech giant incorporated product innovations like Multiview and also integrated creators into behind-the-scenes programming by its media arm.

YouTube’s message to Madison Avenue: The video giant isn’t like traditional TV — it’s bigger, with literally billions of viewers, and better at targeting relevant audiences.
At its annual Brandcast event, held Wednesday during the TV biz’s upfronts week, YouTube drilled home massive scale. On average, viewers watch more than 1 billion hours of content on TV screens daily. According to Nielsen’s total TV and streaming report for the U.S., YouTube has had the No. 1 share in streaming watch-time every month on American TVs since February 2023.
“We’re redefining what TV looks like, helping creators reach new heights and using AI to expand creativity,” said YouTube CEO Neal Mohan (pictured above), kicking off the evening’s event Wednesday.

Ari Emanuel, the CEO of Endeavor and one of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices in the fight against antisemitism, will be honored at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s National Tribute Gala.
At the annual fundraiser for Swc, which has taken place since 1977 and brings together many of the most powerful and influential people in the business, Jews and non-Jews alike, Emanuel will receive the organization’s highest honor, the Humanitarian Award, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Emanuel, 63, will be feted by colleagues — and give an acceptance speech — at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on May 22. Members of the public can purchase tickets to attend, starting at $1500 a plate, but, in a first, the event will be closed to the press.

If the 2023 upfronts were about disruption, the 2024 upfronts are about Disruption with a capital “D.”
Last year’s events were quite literally disrupted, with striking WGA writers on picket lines outside the New York City venues and the annual presentations to advertisers blunted by a noted lack of star power, as actors proved unwilling to cross those picket lines. While companies like Disney and NBCUniversal tried to make up for it by leaning on their news and sports talent, it was nonetheless a muted week.
This year, the disruption is more figurative, but in many ways much worse: Linear TV, the linchpin of the ad business for Hollywood, is rapidly eroding. At the same time, this is the year that the streaming behemoths have decided to go for the ad jugular, with Netflix planning an “immersive” experience for media buyers and Amazon storming into upfronts only months after turning on...

From Thursday through Saturday last week, 775,000 fans crowded into downtown Detroit for the 2024 NFL draft, setting a new attendance record for the event in the process. Football took center stage, but music was very much along for the ride, as Detroit’s rock and hip-hop royalty rubbed elbows with its sports legends, in some cases literally. Detroit Lions superfan Eminem, who’s also been known to rap a bit, joined NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell onstage to open the draft on Thursday night, while Lions legend Barry Sanders hung out with Bob Seger and Big Sean,...

Despite the disappointment of fans, streaming-exclusive NFL games aren’t likely to disappear any time soon.
The NFL knows full well that its immediate future is still primarily on linear TV. Ninety-three of the top 100-rated television programs of 2023 were NFL games, and record-setting ratings from Super Bowl Lviii gave the league all the ammunition it needed to prove to doubters that traditional television is still the best way to offer fans games. But the league is still determined to build its relationships with streaming partners like Peacock and Prime Video, and the league’s EVP of media distribution Hans Schroeder spoke with Ad Week recently about how the league views streaming as a medium.
Schoeder suggested that rising ratings for “Thursday Night Football” games on Prime Video made the league feel comfortable offering it a Wild Card game. The average streaming audience for NFL games is eight years younger than linear audiences on average.

The NFL wants to bring more football talk to morning TV.
The league is shaking up NFL Network’s morning football talk show, Good Morning Football, moving production from New York to Los Angeles, and plotting a two-hour extension of the series, which will be sold in syndication.
Sony Pictures Television will distribute the syndicated edition of the program, with talks in progress, per a source. Multiple partners are expected to carry the syndicated series, which will be separate from the NFL Network show. Michael Davies, the Sony executive and Jeopardy! EP, will also EP the program.
Good Morning Football launched in 2016, becoming the first NFL network show to originate from New York, where the league is headquartered. The program will go on hiatus starting March 29, with plans to return to production from its new L.A. studio later in the summer or during preseason.

Are the rising costs of live sports rights the final nail in the coffin for pay-tv?
It’s easy to see why the NFL is reportedly hesitant to allow its games to become available on the new joint venture streaming platform in the works from Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The league is reportedly concerned that having so many of its games available from one source will dilute its power to ask for exorbitant sums from its broadcasting partners during rights negotiations, and judging from the price it’s charging Amazon to show a playoff game on Prime Video next season, those fears could be well-founded.
Amazon is reportedly paying $120 million for the rights to a Wild Card game next year. If accurate, that’s $10 million more than NBCUniversal paid to stream a Wild Card game on Peacock this year. With the price of live sports rights increasing exponentially,...

Brian Roberts said in a recent interview that he ‘asked the NFL to trust us’ to make an exclusive Wild Card game a success.
If NFL fans who fear a future of pay-per-view games had a problem with the placement of a 2023-24 Wild Card game exclusively on Peacock, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts hasn’t heard about it. Speaking with Front Office Sports about a wide range of sports topics, Roberts was highly proud of his company’s efforts in streaming the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, and he had a blunt warning for those who would prefer sports remain only on linear TV.
“We took the risk…” Roberts said about the Peacock-exclusive Wild Card game. Roberts also spoke about his excitement regarding the upcoming Summer Olympics, which will stream on Peacock. The CEO also touched briefly on continuing discussions that Comcast will pursue NBA rights.

Pop star Taylor Swift is back making headlines for her appearance in this year’s Super Bowl in support of her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s participation in the games. Kelce played for the Kansas City Chiefs who won the Super Bowl Lviii against the San Francisco 49ers. Swift has been seen at many NFL games in the past year in support of Kelce.
Swift’s appearance in the NFL games has sparked both positive and negative comments online, with many accusing the NFL of giving the pop star more spotlight during the games. Taylor Swift finally made it to Super Bowl Lviii and was seen arriving hand in hand with her friends Blake Lively and Ice Spice.
Video of Swift’s arrival and subsequent appearances have gone viral on social media as the excitement grows for the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.
Concerns for Swift’s appearances at the big game had some fans speculating about whether she would make it as she is in the middle of her Eras Tour with performances in Japan. However, due to the time difference, Swift was able to return to the States with enough time to get to Allegiant Stadium and cheer on Kelce and the Chiefs.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is praising Taylor Swift for the new audience that she brought to the National Football League.
The Terminator star recently talked with Yahoo Entertainment about football’s growing popularity across the globe, as well as the singer’s impact on the league since her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce went public at the beginning of the season.
“Football itself draws the hugest crowd because it’s the most popular sport. But then to have someone like her be there and watch the game adds another kind of a thing that [attracts] a different audience,” Schwarzenegger said. “Especially younger girls are now more into football, they know the rules and all of that stuff, so it’s really amazing.”

On February 28, 1983, CBS aired "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen," the two-and-a-half hour series finale of the beloved Korean War drama M*A*S*H.
With its 11-season run, M*A*S*H lasted nearly four times as long as the military conflict it depicted, but the show never experienced the viewership erosion so common to aging series these days.
Far from it, in fact.
In an astonishing feat that's still a source of awe nearly 41 years later, the M*A*S*H finale pulled in a whopping 106 million viewers.
To put that in perspective, only about 99 million Americans tuned in to watch Super Bowl Lvi on NBC in 2022.
And that was up from the previous year when a paltry -- by Super Bowl standards -- 92 million viewers tuned in to watch CBS' live broadcast of the big game.

YouTube is taking to the skies for this year’s Super Bowl ad.
The big game might be seeing the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers facing off, but the streaming video platform is leaning on the NFL’s bird-themed teams in the spot, which is called “Migration.”
The commercial, which will air just before kick-off, sees flocks of Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks flying through the sky, as a bird watcher tracks them.
“As certain as the sun, they always come back,” he says as Seahawks star Tyler Lockett squawks. “Which is why it’s never too early to prepare for the coming season by signing up for NFL Sunday Ticket and YouTube TV.”
The ad also features cameos from popular YouTube creators, including Hot Ones host Sean Evans, as well as Deestroying and Pierson Wodzynski, a plate of hot wings in front of them, naturally.

The reviews – or at least one of them – are in for Taylor Swift’s upcoming album The Tortured Poets Department, though the critic might be just a little biased.
“I have heard some of it,” said Kansas City Chiefs tight end (and Swift’s boyfriend) Travis Kelce at the pre-Super Bowl press event in Las Vegas last night. “It is unbelievable. I can’t wait for her to shake up the world when it finally drops.”
Kelce was not in the audience when Swift won her fourth Album of the Year Grammy Award Sunday night, but he did watch from afar.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 17-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens was the most-watched AFC Championship game ever, drawing north of 55 million viewers. And in a TVLine poll, 44% think this Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Chiefs and 49ers will draw a “lot bigger” audience than the 115.1 million viewers who tuned into the Big Game last year.

Ahead of Super Bowl Lviii, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell held a press conference where he was inevitably asked about Taylor Swift’s impact on the league.
Swift has been attending Kansas City Chiefs games throughout the football season in support of her romantic partner, Travis Kelce. Goodell took on a reporter’s question about whether the romance between Swift and Kelce was scripted.
“I don’t think I’m that good [of] a scripter or anybody on our staff,” Goodell said. “There’s no way that I could have scripted that one. She’s a remarkable performer. She knows great entertainment. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell praised Taylor Swift during his annual Super Bowl week press conference on Monday, saying “it’s great” for the singer to join his football league’s fandom.
“Both Travis and Taylor are wonderful young people,” Goodell said, referring to Swift’s relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. “They seem very happy. She knows great entertainment, and I think that’s why she loves NFL football.”
Goodell’s comments come after months of heightened ratings for the NFL, which many attribute to Swift attending Chiefs games beginning in September. Following her first appearance at a game on Sept. 24, the NFL’s official apparel partner, Fanatics, saw a 400 percent spike in sales of Kelce jerseys. Since then, many fans have begun to criticize the NFL for dedicating chunks of its broadcast to shots of her in the box.

Google execs are actively considering an international expansion of pay-tv service YouTube TV, Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler said during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call.
“It is something we are closely looking at,” Schindler said. “There’s nothing specific I have to add at this moment in time on this one.”
Schindler and CEO Sundar Pichai both took note of highlights for YouTube TV in the quarter, notably the debut of NFL Sunday Ticket as an exclusive offering after 29 years on DirecTV. The premium package is available either as an add-on for YouTube TV subscribers or as a stand-alone offering through YouTube’s channel store.
“YouTube TV is doing well,” Pichai said. “They’ve had great consumer feedback on the experience.” NFL Sunday Ticket “has found its perfect home on YouTube,” he added.
YouTube landed Sunday Ticket a little more than a year ago, paying more than $2 billion a season in a 7-year deal.

Everyone grumbled about the NFL exclusively streaming a Wildcard-round playoff game on NBCUniversal’s Peacock, but then a whole lot of the complainers signed up for the service anyway, according to new data.
With 2.8 million Peacock signups over a 72-hour period, the Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs game was the impetus for the biggest subscriber-acquisition moment ever observed by streaming-measurement company Antenna, which has been in business since 2019. The term “moment” is important here, as it refers to a three-day span. The largest-ever single day for streaming signups remains for Disney+ (2.5 million signups) on its launch day in 2019.
The Peacock signups number includes first-time users testing the service out on a 7-day trial. It is too early still to know how many people churned out of (canceled) Peacock after the trial, or after one paid month.
When reached, a spokesperson for Peacock had no comment on the Antenna numbers.

The case now has a trial date, and if the plaintiffs are successful in the case it could lead to huge changes in how audiences watch NFL games.
Lawsuits are nothing new for the NFL. An entity as huge and worth as much money as the NFL is bound to attract attention, and to be sure it has earned legal scrutiny at times. Turns out plenty of people were able to figure out where to find Peacock in time for Saturday night’s NFL playoff game.

“I’ve been in communication with @NFL commissioner Roger Goodell regarding the dangerous conditions in Buffalo this weekend,” Hochul wrote on X. “In consultation with our emergency response teams, @BuffaloBills leadership, and the NFL, the Bills game will be postponed to 4:30 pm Monday.”
The game had originally been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Et on Sunday.
“The decision to move the game to Monday was made in consultation with New York Governor Kathy Hochul in the best interest of public safety, and with the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the region prepares for the storm,” the Bills wrote in a statement.

Well, that’s gotta hurt.
The National Football League isn’t officially saying anything yet, but the league just suffered a major loss – and we’re not talking about the woeful end of Bill Belichick’s reign at the New England Patriots.
Failing to get the nearly decade long antitrust lawsuit over the lucrative Sunday Ticket package thrown out of court, the Roger Goodell-run NFL is going to trial for potentially $6.1 billion just over a week after this year’s Super Bowl.
Rejecting the NFL’s request to dump the case, U.S. District Court Judge Philip Gutierrez on January 11 ordered the trial over non-competitive practices by the NFL to begin on February 22, to be specific.
Literally and figuratively, the only game in town for the NFL, the trial is expected to last about six weeks. If the NFL loses the case, big part of the blast radius of...

Updated, with NFL comment: A New York congressman fired off an angry letter to NBC Sports and NFL executives, complaining that the move of Saturday’s Chiefs vs. Dolphins wild card game to air exclusively on a subscription streaming service was a “bait-and-switch” being played on consumers.
The letter from Rep. Pat Ryan (D-ny) was sent to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NBC Sports president Rick Cordella.
Ryan wrote on X/Twitter, “How much more profit do Goodell and NBC need to make at the expense of hard working Americans? I’m demanding @NFL and @NBCSports end this Peacock bait-and-switch Bs and offer the Dolphins-Chiefs game on TV. Millions of loyal fans already pay for NBC. Let us watch the damn game!”
In the letter, Ryan wrote, “The NFL playoffs will begin tomorrow, and millions of fans are looking forward to kicking back and watching their favorite teams play. It...

The Super Bowl is returning to Los Angeles.
The NFL says that Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium will host the 2027 Super Bowl, a move that will make L.A. the center of the sports universe for the second half of the 2020s.
The 2027 Super Bowl will be broadcast by ABC and ESPN, the first time the Disney-owned channels host the biggest game on the NFL calendar, and the most-watched TV event of the year. SoFi Stadium hosted its first Super Bowl in 2022, with the hometown Los Angeles Rams defeating the Cincinnati Bengals.
SoFi’s next Super Bowl also means that Los Angeles will host arguably the three biggest sporting events in the world in back to back to back years. In 2026, Los Angeles will be one of the cities hosting the FIFA World Cup (it isn’t clear if it will be SoFi Stadium or another venue in the area); in...

Roger Goodell thinks the flurry of attention Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship is bringing to the Kansas City Chiefs and the larger league is “great” for the game.
The NFL commissioner shared his feelings on the duo’s impact on broadcast viewership and league interest — particularly about Swift’s fans — during an interview on Wednesday with CBS Mornings, in which he also addressed previously announced plans to expand into Spain and Brazil, and offered newer comments about his stance on sports betting by NFL league players and employees and the league’s approach to protecting players in the collision and contact-driven sport.
When asked about Swift, Goodell called the Grammy winner an “unbelievable artist,” while also noting that Kelce is an “unbelievable player.”
“Listen, they’re happy. They seem to be enjoying their relationship. That’s great in and of itself,” Goodell said. But it has connected more...

Taylor Swift is good for the NFL. And that comes from someone who should know.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell appeared on CBS Mornings today to talk about all things football heading into the Thanksgiving weekend, and the subject inevitably turned to Swift and her high-profile (if still officially unconfirmed) romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Praising Swift as an “unbelievable artist” and Kelce an “unbelievable player,” Goodell told CBS Mornings co-host and ex-NFLer Nate Burleson: “Listen, they’re happy. They seem to be enjoying their relationship. That’s great in and of itself. But it has connected more fans of Taylor’s and more fans of the NFL in some ways. To see that they have a connection, now they have a connection to our game and to Taylor. … I think it’s great for the league to have that kind of attention. So we welcome it.
