Fans were shocked recently when it was revealed that the average age of The CW‘s viewers is 58 and now data for all five broadcast networks has been revealed.
The CW is known for content that seems to be geared at a young adult audience, including shows like Riverdale, All American, and The Flash.
After the data was announced by Nexstar COO and president Tom Carter, Variety did an independent study and confirmed the numbers.
Surprisingly, The CW does not have the youngest audience among the five major broadcast networks.

With a title like Freddy’s Fridays, it’s obvious this was meant to cash in on the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s. And with the length of time that film took to actually get made both of the other knockoffs, The Banana Splits Movie and Willy’s Wonderland ended up preceding it to release, so Freddy’s Fridays has the mockbuster slot all to itself.
Todd is bringing an escort named Anastasia home. She doesn’t seem overly concerned when he brings her not to his apartment but to a basement full of candles, chains, and a book with an eye in the middle of the cover. She even reads from it, which is a big mistake. Four figures appear and hack her to pieces as Todd watches.

If current polls are to be believed, American voters are looking with a sense of dread at a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Yet, widely anticipating the most expensive election in the nation’s history, another cycle of bitter and polarized politics perversely may be exactly the bottom-line boost TV broadcasters and cable networks need.
Facing ongoing labor uncertainty as SAG-AFTRA continues to negotiate with Hollywood studios to end its 90-day strike and battered by eroding ratings, rumors of potential sales or consolidation, months of writers on the picket lines, and the perception of inevitable decline, linear TV is looking with confidence at a contentious battle for the presidency next year. That, plus lucrative campaigns for control of the Senate and the House and a bevy of state races, could result in something akin to a well-timed bailout.

Nexstar reported its second-quarter 2023 earnings Tuesday, revealing the TV stations group giant had turned a profit of $153 million in Q2, while its CW broadcast network posted a loss of $78 million for the April-June quarter.
For the CW, which was formally acquired by Nexstar in October 2022 from Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery, a year-over-year comparison can’t be drawn based on the lack of financial results disclosed publicly by its former parent companies. But it’s long been known the old CW was not profitable, and this $78 million is an improvement over the $83 million loss the CW posted in Q1 of this year.
Nexstar CFO’s Lee Ann Gliha expanded on the CW’s performance during the earnings call Tuesday morning, stating that the CW generated $75 million in revenue in Q2, and, with some favorable adjustments accounting for a $3 million one-time expense attributed mostly to restructuring charges, took only a $74 million loss for the quarter.

London, June 28 (Ians) After taking the field for the second Test of Ashes 2023 against England at Lord’s, veteran Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon on Wednesday became the first specialist bowler to play 100 consecutive matches in the longest format of the game.
Lyon, who made his Test debut in July 2011, has also become only the sixth player in the history of cricket to feature in 100 consecutive Tests. Other players in the list are Alastair Cook (159), Allan Border (153), Mark Waugh (107), Sunil Gavaskar (106) and Brendon McCullum (101).
Coincidentally, Lyon has achieved this rare landmark at Lord’s, the same venue where he was dropped in the format for the last time. This was almost a decade ago during Australia’s tour of England for the 2013 Ashes series.
“That’s something I’m really proud of. To be able to tick off 100 consecutive Test matches, that’s a proper stat in my head. That’s a lot of Test cricket,...

Nexstar Media Group, which owns The CW and the largest group of local TV stations in the U.S., is adding an independent station in San Diego to its portfolio.
The company has agreed to pay $35 million to acquire Kusi-tv (Channel 51) from McKinnon Broadcasting Company. It will join Nexstar-owned Fox affiliate Kswb-tv in San Diego, which is the No. 30 market in the U.S.
The move is a potential step toward creating an owned-and-operated CW station in the market. The network is currently carried by Kfmb, a Tegna-owned station, and any transition would have to wait until the expiration of its affiliate agreement. Still, the upside of that scenario was noted in Nexstar’s announcement of the deal. The station combination is “expected to be accretive to Nexstar’s operating results when The CW Network affiliation becomes available in the market,” the announcement said.

In what was a blockbuster year for the local TV station owner, Nexstar CEO Perry Sook’s 2022 pay package soared to $39.3 million, according to the company’s proxy filing, released Friday. That was up from $21.1 million in 2021.
Sook’s 2022 compensation package was driven mostly by a $33.3 million stock grant, with his salary at $2 million, a $1 million bonus, and $3 million in non-equity incentive compensation.
In 2022 Nexstar not only saw record midterm political advertising revenue, but it acquired The CW from Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount, with the entertainment giants effectively paying the company $54 million to take it off their hands (and balance sheets).
The CW lost $94 million in its first quarter as a division of Nexstar.
Among other Nexstar executives, president and COO Tom Carter took home $2 million, and networks chief Sean Compton (who oversees the CW and NewsNation, among other channels) earned a package worth $2.5 million.
Nexstar has been on an expansion push.

Nexstar Media Group, which last year acquired 75 of The CW, updated investors on the “offensive and defensive” rationale for the acquisition.
Company executives convened a 30-minute conference call this morning, taking investors through a 20-slide deck but taking no questions at the end of the session. Nexstar will release its fourth-quarter financial results on February 28 and is expected to conduct its customary Q&a with Wall Street analysts after those numbers are reported.
CFO Lee Ann Gliha said the CW deal last fall, which came in exchange for no upfront cash or stock, will enable Nexstar to evolve from its roots in local broadcasting to a player in the national broadcast ad business. Paramount Global and Warner Bros Discovery — the current parents of network founders and longtime 50-50 partners CBS and Warner Bros — each retain 12.5 stakes but are now passive investors.

The CW was only founded 16 years ago, and throughout that short life, it’s been known as both the youngest broadcaster and the broadcaster with the youngest audience. That’s why when Nexstar COO and president Tom Carter stated during a conference call Monday that the average viewer of the network, which is being acquired by the TV station group giant, is 58 years old, the internet had a hard time swallowing the stat.
How is it possible that the average viewer of the home of YA-centric content like “Riverdale,” “All American,” “Walker” and “The Flash” is in their late 50s?
But as Variety has independently confirmed with measurements from Nielsen, the Nexstar exec was correct: the median age for the CW’s primetime viewer throughout the 2021 calendar year was 57.4, according to Live + 7 Day data. That counts initial linear viewership and a week’s worth of delayed (mostly DVR) viewing where available.

During a call with analysts today, executives from Nexstar Media Group revealed how they hope to turn the CW into more of a cost-conscious broadcast network that appeals to a broader audience. Turns out the CW is a lot closer to that goal than anyone might have imagined.
The reality, according to Nexstar President and COO Tom Carter, is that the average CW viewer is 58 years old — which he thinks is why the broadcast network is also the lowest-rated among all five. Since the CW is home to such teen faves as Riverdale, All American and The Flash, news of its 50-something appeal elicited more than a few laughs online.

As discussions continue about a potential deal for control of the CW, network co-owner ViacomCBS has renewed CBS affiliate deals in 39 markets with top station group Nexstar.
The markets reach a combined 14% of the U.S. viewing audience in 17.4 million households. Following three affiliate agreements that were renewed early last year, this new round wraps up all of ViacomCBS and Nexstar’s affiliation renewals.
The renewals, some of which came before their expiration dates, mean Nexstar CBS affiliates will continue to be available via streaming service Paramount+ as well as other internet pay-tv packages. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Financial terms of the deal between ViacomCBS and Nexstar were not disclosed.

Top U.S. local TV station owner Nexstar Media Group reported solid third-quarter results, with distribution and core advertising gains offsetting record 2020 political ad spending.
The company’s total revenue gained 3.5% in the quarter compared with the same period a year ago, reaching $1.16 billion. Diluted earnings per share dipped to $3.90 from $4.08, but topped Wall Street analysts’ consensus expectations, as did revenue.
Distribution revenue climbed 13%, the company said. When the $120 million political surge from the year-ago quarter is excluded, station revenue rose 10%.
In a conference call with analysts to discuss the results, executives downplayed the impact of supply-chain issues on advertising, a scenario causing concern in other corners of the TV business. COO Tom Carter said the current fourth quarter ad revenue is pacing well and should improve over the third quarter. “It won’t be back to 2019 levels just yet,” he said, “but we continue to make progress.”

‘Never Too Late’ (Photo credit: Bradley Patrick).
The launches of the Liam Neeson action drama Honest Thief and Australian ‘geezer’ comedy Never Too Late helped reverse a three-week slide at cinemas last weekend.
But ticket sales remain depressed and the year-to-date national Bo total through Sunday is $334 million, a woeful 67.5 per cent down on last year’s $1.03 billion.
Among the limited releases, Polish drama Corpus Christi posted the weekend’s highest per-screen average while US indie comedy-drama Kajillionaire struggled. The Taika Waititi-produced Kiwi comedy Baby, Done did not resonate either.
Numero reported the top 20 titles generated $2.28 million, 7 per cent up on the previous frame.
The feature writing and directing debut of Ozark co-creator Mark Williams, Honest Thief stole $696,000 on 206 screens and $722,000 with previews for Rialto, in line with the US results where it’s been No. 1 for three weeks in a Covid-19 devastated market.

‘Honest Thief’ Review: Liam Neeson, Mad as Hell Again, as a Bank Robber Who Tries to Turn Himself In
Here’s the kind of what-were-they-thinking? moment that can throw you right out of a movie. Tom Carter (Liam Neeson), a bank robber extraordinaire, is about to reveal to Annie (Kate Walsh), the woman he’s in love with, that he’s not the man she thought he was. He’s got no choice but to come clean, because she arrives at his hotel at a rather inopportune moment — just as he and the corrupt FBI agent he’s in the middle of pummeling spill onto the sidewalk from the floor above. She sees him sock the agent with that I’m-going-to-put-my-fist-through-your-head ferocity that no one can summon quite like Liam Neeson. Then he shuttles her into his Jeep, and they escape with bad guys shooting at them, shattering the car’s rear window. Tom’s got a bloody bruise on his temple, and as he leads a high-speed chase through the streets of Boston,...

As New Fox moves its flagship broadcast network toward a programming lineup dominated by live sports, one analyst wonders if it could come to view the traditional relationship between the network and its local affiliates as expendable.
“I’m concerned that the move by Fox to go toward more of a national sports play, at some point does the network just say, ‘You know what? We realize the value of local is local but we’ll fill that in in the rest of the country with a national feed. We’re going to go with the nuclear option,'” said analyst Michael Nathanson at the Tvb Forward conference.
Fox is changing its programming stripes in anticipation of selling most of the company to Disney, except for the broadcast networks and stations, plus Fox News and FS1.
Nathanson’s comments were something akin to what a fox would say in the henhouse.
