Jannik Sinner will become world number one after the 2024 Roland Garros, and former legendary player Mats Wilander thinks he'll be number one for a very long time.
The way the Italian player finished last season made many of his rivals realize that he was taking the next step in his career. He elevated his level, won a couple of trophies, and just looked primed to take his game to an even higher level.
That's what happened in Australia, where he won his maiden Grand Slam trophy this year, and he's still playing at that level. He's in the Roland Garros semi-final, which ensured he became the new world number one on Monday.
According to former player Wilander, who spoke to Eurosport, he'll stay there for a while but not in one go because Carlos Alcaraz will likely insert himself in that equation. Nevertheless, Sinner is very worthy of that number-one rank.

Carlos Alcaraz will face Jannik Sinner in the 2024 Roland Garros semi-final, and he doesn't consider himself a favorite.
The two youngsters have been the best performers at this year's Roland Garros so far. They've been amazing, and both have about an equal chance to win the season's second major.
Many would pick Alcaraz as a favorite in their match, mostly because of his clay-court qualities, but he wouldn't agree with that. Sinner has been the best player this year by far, and even though the Spaniard beat him in Indian Wells, it's still not enough for him to declare himself a favorite.
He does enjoy the challenge of problem-solving in real-time, and he'll have to do that a lot against the Italian, at least if he wants to win.
"I really like having to find solutions on the fly to change the course of the matches, like I did in Indian Wells.

Carlos Alcaraz is well aware of what awaits him in the next match at the 2024 Roland Garros as he's set to play Jannik Sinner, whom he called the best player in the world.
These two players have been the most impressive so far at Roland Garros. We've known that the Spaniard can be marvelous on clay, but many wondered whether Sinner could bring that machinery to the red dirt, and so far, he's been amazing.
The win over Grigor Dimitrov was impressive, similar to Alcaraz's expected win against Stefanos Tsitsipas. It's an interesting matchup, one in which either player can win, and the former world no. 1 is fully aware of that.
He beat Sinner in Indian Wells earlier this year, but it wasn't easy, and it won't be easy this time either, as his rival is the best player in the world according to the 21-year-old.
"It’s a really difficult challenge.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will play the 'small final' before the real Roland Garros final, as they will meet in the most anticipated semi-final match.
The two youngsters are the two best players in the world right now, and they have been the most impressive players so far at Roland Garros. Sinner has been smashing opponents since the event started, and he has never really found any issues in any of his matches.
Alcaraz has been equally impressive with his play, but his overall performance was also expected because he grew up on clay, and he proved his qualities many times. Sinner didn't play that well last year because the Italian was beaten by Daniel Altmaier early in Paris last year.
Head-to-head:
The two young superstars have played eight times against each other, with the H2H tied at 4-4. It's a rivalry that will carry tennis in the coming decade,...

Novak Djokovic will play no further part at this year's Roland Garros because of a knee injury, and there are fears he might miss Wimbledon.
Djokovic's withdrawal from the 2024 French Open was announced by the tournament on Tuesday afternoon. He was scheduled to play Casper Ruud in the quarterfinal on Wednesday in a rematch of last year's final in Paris.
But that won't happen after Djokovic underwent an Mri scan that revealed he suffered from a torn meniscus on his right knee. He had a horrid time competing with the injury in the last two rounds, and he came close to an early elimination.
The injury worsened in the thrilling five-set win over Francisco Cerundolo, during which Djokovic complained to the tournament supervisor about the slippery court.
The 37-year-old fell multiple times during the match and requested that the trainer address the knee issue. He was handed some painkillers, which gave him instant relief.

Novak Djokovic withdrew from Roland Garros before his scheduled quarterfinal match and could be set for a rankings slide.
Djokovic's knee injury proved problematic in the last two rounds of the tournament against Lorenzo Musetti and then Francisco Cerundolo. He needed to play ten sets and nine hours of tennis to progress into the last eight.
The 37-year-old started the tournament as World No. 1, but after pulling out from the clay-court Grand Slam before the quarterfinal, he has guaranteed Jannik Sinner to surpass him in the points tally and become the new No.1 on Monday, June 10th.
Djokovic's dominance at the top of the rankings will temporarily stop at 428 weeks. He already holds the record for the most weeks at no. 1 and recently stated that he is not obsessed with the rankings for the 2024 season and that he expected Sinner to take control at some point.

Jannik Sinner will become world number one on Monday, and he reacted to the news in real-time after his win against Grigor Dimitrov at the 2024 Roland Garros.
As the Italian and Dimitrov battled in the third set of their match, the news of Novak Djokovic withdrawing from the French Open due to a knee injury came down. That ensured that Sinner would become world number one under any circumstance, but of course, his goal is also winning the trophy in Paris, so it didn't affect the fact that he won that match.
The 22-year-old will see the number one next to his name on Monday, but he wasn't particularly thrilled with how it came to be. He could have won it on the court by winning the tournament, but with Djokovic withdrawing, it doesn't really matter if he wins or not.

Jannik Sinner is guaranteed to become the new men's World No. 1 when the Atp rankings are updated after Roland Garros.
Sinner trailed World No. 1 Novak Djokovic by 1190 points before the tournament began. But because the Serbian was defending the full 2000 points in Paris for winning the tournament last year, he cascaded to second place in the live rankings.
The Italian successfully defended second-round points from last year at the same tournament, and he needed to reach the final of this year's French Open to be absolutely certain of becoming No. 1. But it wasn't the only permutation for Sinner to rise to No. 1.
In a fresh development on Tuesday, Djokovic withdrew from the tournament for what has been reported as a torn medial meniscus on his right knee. This now means that Sinner will surpass the 37-year-old in the points tally regardless of his own progress in the tournament.

New world no. 1 to-be, Jannik Sinner, proved too much for Grigor Dimitrov, beating him in three sets at the 2024 Roland Garros.
The last time the two shared the tennis court was not that long ago in Miami, where they played in the final of the Atp Masters 1000 tournament. Despite some impressive performances this year, the Bulgarian proved no match for the Italian.
This match started similarly because Sinner once again overwhelmed his opponent. In fairness, Dimitrov looked very flat physically, not moving very well, and generally not looking all too present in the match.
He fell down in his previous match, playing with a grip covered in blood, so there is a chance that he felt fatigued early on in this one. He'd play far better in the second set but still wasn't quite sharp enough to give Sinner too many problems.

Jannik Sinner and Grigor Dimitrov will meet in Paris, playing for a spot in the 2024 Roland Garros semi-final.
The Italian player has been absolutely amazing so far in Paris, but that's pretty in line with how he's played this year. He faced some minor issues in his most recent match but then crushed his opponent to dispel any rumors of proper struggle.
Dimitrov has been equally impressive, and he has had a tremendous year so far. Both of these players are capable and could go all the way if they win this match, so it will be very interesting to see who can do better.
Sinner is generally considered the better player overall, and he's had more success in recent matches.

Novak Djokovic's record-setting run at the top of the world rankings will extend for a 428th week, but could this be his last?
That's the million-dollar question at the 2024 Roland Garros. The clay-court Grand Slam has reached the second week with Djokovic firmly in it. The top seed will face Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round on Monday.
Djokovic's progress into this stage of the competition was hardly a mean task after battling through the second-longest match of this year's French Open so far in the third round. He defeated Lorenzo Musetti in a four-and-a-half-hour epic that finished at 3 a.m. local time.
The match set the record for the latest finish at Roland Garros, beating the previous record by at least 90 minutes. At one stage, it looked like Djokovic's reign as World No. 1 would come to an end, falling two sets to one down to the inspired Musetti.

Jannik Sinner dropped his first set at this year's Roland Garros, but he still won the match against Corentin Moutet in four sets.
His first dropped set came against the Frenchman, a tricky player with a distinct style, having a really good week on native soil. He showed all of that in the opening set of their fourth-round match, in which he thrashed the Italian.
He outplayed him in almost every rally early on, leaving the second seed confused as to what to do. Sinner kept his poker face, but it was pretty clear he was frustrated by what was happening.
He served back-to-back double faults in one of the games in which he lost his serve, which rarely happens, but it did in that first set. Moutet got up 5-0 with a set point to hand Sinner a bagel but couldn't quite get it done.

Carlos Alcaraz's coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, won't be traveling with his protege to the year's first major in Australia.
The 2024 Australian Open is just around the corner and is set for a historic Sunday start next year, on January 14, 2024, where 128 men will vie for the right to become Grand Slam champions. Alcaraz, who is among the favorites, will play at the event for the first time in two years.
Last year, the 20-year-old missed Melbourne's biggest party of the summer due to a leg injury and only began his 2023 campaign in mid-February in South America. Ahead of the new season, Alcaraz has no reported health concerns and will be on the flight to Australia.
The Spaniard will launch a fresh assault on the World No. 1 ranking that he lost to Novak Djokovic at the end of last season. However, Alcaraz must challenge the Serbian ace without a vital voice in his coaching team.

Simone Vagnozzi has called his working relationship with Jannik Sinner "special" in light of the most accomplished season of the 22-year-old's career.
Sinner enjoyed a seismic rise into the world's Top 5, climbing to a career-high of World No. 4, which is the joint highest by an Italian man in Atp rankings history (equaling the great Adriano Panatta).
The man from San Candido earned 12 Top 10 wins last season, the second-highest behind Novak Djokovic. Sinner captured four titles, including his first Atp Masters 1000 at the Canadian Open during the North American summer.
The crowning moment of Sinner's season was in Malaga where he almost singlehandedly helped his country lift a first Davis Cup title in 47 years. It was a major accomplishment that earned him a hero's welcome back home.

Patrick Mouratoglou believes the new generation of tennis stars, including Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune, are close to matching Novak Djokovic's level.
Alcaraz, Sinner, and Rune have each defeated Djokovic at least once during the 2023 season and are tipped to carry the sport for the foreseeable future. But when all was said and done this year, Djokovic was still miles clear at the top in terms of points and titles.

Holger Rune described Novak Djokovic's level of play at 36 as "unbelievable" and admitted it would be tough to challenge him if he sustained his form.
Djokovic was the Atp's best player in 2023 by a mile. Despite playing a shorter schedule than usual, he finished last season with the most titles on the Atp tour. The Serbian won seven titles, including three Grand Slams.
He is the first man to win three majors in a single season on four occasions, and had it not been for a shanked drive volley in the fifth set of this year's Wimbledon final, Djokovic would have, in all likelihood, completed the first Calendar Grand Slam by a male player since 1969.
Despite that miss, Djokovic was pleased with himself at the manner in which he played all season to fend off not just one, but multiple challengers along the way.
Djokovic outlasted Carlos Alcaraz in the year-end No.

Jannik Sinner seemingly can't stop collecting accolades for his successful 2023 season, as he was named the 2023 Atp Most Improved Player of the Year.
The start of the season didn't seem to be so successful for the young Italian. He lost to Sebastian Korda in the quarterfinals in Adelaide before crashing out to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
He then won in Montpellier and made it to the final in Rotterdam before playing in the Indian Wells final and Miami Open semifinal. But after that, the clay-court part of the season, and to some degree, also the grass season, was not so successful for Sinner.
However, during the last part of the season, he was superb. First, he won his first Atp 1000 title in Toronto, then he triumphed in Beijing and Vienna, and also showed a few heroic performances at the Atp Finals, beating even Novak Djokovic.

Jack Draper is probably the most exciting British tennis player to have risen into the Top 100 since a young Andy Murray burst onto the scene almost two decades ago.
Draper has showcased plenty of talent in his young career, and having gotten his ranking back into double digits; he'll be hoping for a more significant and productive season in 2024. The only thing that has held him back is injuries, and we've not seen the entire repertoire and skillset regularly.
But it shouldn't escape anyone's mind that he is only 21 and has a long future ahead of him. Draper's fellow peers who are just about his age or slightly older have taken considerable strides to ascend the global ranks of men's tennis.
Carlos Alcaraz, 20, has already captured two Grand Slams and been to World No. 1. As for Jannik Sinner, 22, he is currently sitting at a career-high ranking of World No. 4 after...

Novak Djokovic praised Jannik Sinner's team for winning the Atp Coach of the Year Award but also questioned why his own coach, Goran Ivanisevic was not considered.
Ivanisevic has supported Djokovic throughout a sensational 2023 campaign, where the Serbian player won three of the four Grand Slams and posted the highest Atp win rate. However, Ivanisevic did not receive the Coach of the Year Award, which instead went to Sinner's coaching pair of Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi.
Djokovic has since reacted on his official Instagram channel, posting congratulations for coaches Cahill and Vagnozzi. But, the Atp number one also addressed Ivanisevic and asked what more the former Croatian player turned coach could do to win the accolade.
"Congratulations to Darren and Simone for a great season with Jannik."

It is the Atp's year-end Awards Week, but surprisingly, Novak Djokovic and his coach, Goran Ivanisevic, are not collecting any trophies.
Djokovic was the Atp's most consistent performer last season, tallying a higher winning rate than any other player and lifting seven titles - the most garnered by a single player in 2023 - despite only appearing in 12 Atp tournaments.
Djokovic decimated the field at all the most important tournaments, winning three of the four Grand Slams this year and breaking a two-man tie with Roger Federer at the Atp Finals, where he scooped his 7th championship.
However, Djokovic was not in control of the Atp's awards this week, which honors the standout players and coaches at the end of the season. He also did not have the significant backing of the fans and fellow coaches who voted in some of these award categories.

Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, the two central pillars in Jannik Sinner's coaching team, have won the 2023 Atp Coach of the Year Award.
The pair are credited and recognized for their immense contribution to turning Sinner into an elite athlete. Last season, the Italian cracked many landmarks in his burgeoning young career, chief among them winning his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto.
Sinner equaled the previous best ranking of an Italian player on the Atp Tour (Adriano Panatta) by becoming World No. 4 for the first time at the start of October after defeating Daniil Medvedev to win the China Open in Beijing.
Overall, the 22-year-old won four Atp singles titles last season, the most he has managed in a single season and on par with his previous career-best year in 2021. Sinner was also an influential member of the Italian team that won its first Davis Cup title in 47 years last month in Malaga.

Let’s take a look at the racket specs of Jannik Sinner, and just what is demanded of one of the heaviest hitters on the Atp Tour.
Following the example of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner endorses the current Head Speed Auxetic. And although this is not his actual racket underneath, Sinner actually does use a version of the Head Speed – based on the Head Speed Graphene Touch from 2015.
Albeit, with a few custom adjustments. With a static weight of 325 grams and a relatively high balance of 33.3cm, Sinner’s rackets appear to be fairly simply customised from the stock Speed MP specs, bringing up the swingweight to a more challenging and professional-friendly 340 kg/cm2 .
The lead weight added to the sides of Sinner’s racket head will, in addition to the significant increase in swingweight, add some much-needed stability to the frame – something the old Graphene Touch Speed rackets lack over the newer,...

One of Italy's famed sports newspapers - La Gazzetta dello Sport - has been put on the spot for its treatment of Jannik Sinner before and after the Davis Cup triumph.
Sinner steered Italy to their first Davis Cup title since 1976 at the end of November, with eye-catching wins over Novak Djokovic and Serbia in the semifinals in both singles and doubles.
And less than 24 hours later, he was on hand to complete the assignment as he swatted aside Alex de Minaur and Australia. The concept of team competition is that every member has a role in the team's success.
The plaudits were undoubtedly reserved for the entire Italian team, even those players who never made it in the squad due to injury, like Matteo Berrettini, but found time to travel to Malaga as a spectator.

Matteo Berrettini didn't play for Italy at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals, but he was there and supported the team, which is why Jannik Sinner wants his name on the trophy as well.
Matteo Berrettini barely missed any chances to play for Italy in the Davis Cup so far in his career, but he's been quite unlucky. Every time the Davis Cup rolls around, Berrettini is either injured or just can't play the way he wants to, and it doesn't work out.
This year, it finally worked out for the country as they won the competition, but largely thanks to Jannik Sinner. His double heroics against Novak Djokovic in the semi-final were the crucial results that allowed Italy to move on to the final.

Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner both played at the Atp Finals and also the Davis Cup, which was praised by former player Andrea Petkovic.
There has been a prevalent narrative in recent years that most top players kind of avoid playing for their countries in their respective competitions. That's certainly true however, it's also a blank statement that lacks any real context.
Most players will prioritize their singles career and health. The singles are what feeds them, and prioritising that is only natural. Health is a tricky one because the sport is so taxing with the physical demands and travel. Sometimes events simply don't line up.
Take the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, for example. They started one day after the conclusion of the Wta Finals, which makes it pretty impossible for someone like Iga Swiatek. She could technically do it, but she's risking injury and all sorts of things,...

Jannik Sinner sensationally led Italy to their first Davis Cup title since 1976 following his country's convincing win over Australia in Sunday's final.

The 22-year-old felt he needed a longer recovery time after a busy summer in Europe and North America and could not commit to playing in the Davis Cup Finals. That decision was not treated with grace and acceptance back home.

Adriano Panatta, one of the most revered Italian tennis players in history, questioned his priorities, ostensibly stating that he was driven by profits. The criticism was blown out of proportion, with several Italian outlets making references to Sinner's past.
Because of his previous history, where he...

Jannik Sinner was Italy's most valuable player in their triumphant 2023 Davis Cup run, delivering in both singles and doubles, and he called the win special.
Sinner and the Italian media have had a somewhat strained relationship because he was called out multiple times for not playing for Italy. The Italian never dodged it on purpose but opted to prioritize different things at different times.
He signed up to play this year, and it was perfect timing because his tennis has never been better. He has been amazing indoors for a few years but went to another level this year.
The win over Novak Djokovic at the Atp Finals last week and then once more this week proves that. He won all of his matches both singles and doubles, and won the final one, which clinched the trophy.

Jannik Sinner proved to be a hero for Italy at the 2023 Davis Cup, winning multiple crucial matches, including the one against Novak Djokovic.
Sinner has had a really strong finish to the year with a trophy at the Vienna Open, a final at the Atp Finals, and now the Davis Cup. He played Novak Djokovic three times and beat him twice, one of which was a crucial win to save his country from elimination.
The end result of all of that was him beating Alex de Minaur on Sunday to give Italy the second point needed to clinch the trophy. While he was the Mvp, he didn't take full credit for it, praising his teammates, even those who didn't play.
Matteo Berrettini made the trip to Malaga despite being unable to play as he's still recovering from injury. He stood there with his teammates, offered advice, cheered, and clapped as...

Returning in modern tennis has become very important because the serves are improving, getting faster and stronger.
Many players nowadays understand the importance of the serve. Most emerging young players have a powerful serve, making returns as important as ever. It's always been historically important, which is shown by the tremendous career of Novak Djokovic.
He's widely considered one of the best returners of all time, and it's a huge part of why he's been so dominant for so long. However, there is another player who is dominating the return stats this year - Carlos Alcaraz.
The Spaniard is one of the most versatile returners on the Atp Tour, even though you might not associate him as such. Jannik Sinner, for example, is a player known for attacking tennis and some flashy return winners.
Alcaraz can do that as well, but he mostly focuses on the end goal. It's all about winning for him,...

2023 was a truly memorable year for Jannik Sinner at an individual and team level, and that's why he deserves to be our Most Improved Player of the Year.
Sinner was Italy's best player by a mile, attaining the joint-highest ranking of any Italian man, and ending the country's drought for a first Davis Cup title since 1976. He was instrumental in getting the job done, besting the likes of Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur for the crown.
Collectively, it was superb, and individually, he was on a different level. Sinner's subtle improvements in serve, court positioning, and fitness translated to a healthy win rate in 2023. In fact, it was his personal best at 76.5% and one of the highest on tour.
Three key stats this season that make it implausible to think there was more improved player on tour than Sinner are these: most wins against world No. 1 (3), most wins against...

Jannik Sinner finished off his 2023 year with another win, this one officially sealing Italy's 2023 Davis Cup win.
Sinner failed to give the Italian crowd the trophy in Turin last week, but he's redeemed himself spectacularly this week. He proved to be the hero of his country in their run to the Davis Cup trophy, winning singles and doubles matches all week long.
Yesterday's win over Djokovic in singles was huge, and he followed up with some doubles heroics. He then followed that one up with another strong showing today against Alex de Minaur, sealing the win for his country by delivering the crucial second point.
It was a fabulous match from Sinner, who had a pretty easy job after Matteo Arnaldi secured the first point. As good as de Minaur is, he was 0-5 against the Italian before this match, so this was unlikely to go his way unless something spectacular happened.

The first match of the 2023 Davis Cup Finals final was played, and Matteo Arnaldi delivered for Italy, giving Jannik Sinner a championship point after beating Alexei Popyrin.
If Jannik Sinner beats Alex de Minaur, Italy will win the 2023 Davis Cup, which would be a huge achievement for the country, which wasn't considered a tennis powerhouse until a few years ago.
With the rise of Sinner, Matteo Berrettini, and other talents from the country, Italy was expected to win one of these years, and it might happen later today.
A good chunk of that is thanks to Matteo Arnaldi, who delivered a huge point for Italy. Australia has a pretty strong doubles pairing with Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, so winning the singles was always their best chance to get it done.
Thanks to Arnaldi's win, Sinner has the trophy on his racquet. He's 5-0 all-time against de Minaur, so yeah.

Nick Kyrgios shared his reaction in the aftermath of Novak Djokovic's successive defeats at the Davis Cup, which cost Serbia a place in Sunday's final.
Having scored the first point in the semifinal tie against Italy thanks to Miomir Kecmanovic's heroics against Lorenzo Musetti, Djokovic had the chance to seal Serbia's spot in the final for the first time since winning their solitary title in 2010.
Djokovic competed courageously, coming from a set down to level the match. He held three match points on the Sinner serve late in the third set but failed to convert any of them. Sinner eventually prevailed. The 36-year-old's evening went from bad to worse.
Djokovic was picked to play the decisive doubles match together with Kecmanovic, facing the Italian duo of Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego. The Serbians were beaten in straight sets having squandered plenty of chances to even the score in the second set.

Jannik Sinner did something that no one else managed to do before when he beat Novak Djokovic after saving three consecutive match points.
The Italian is having probably the best weeks of his career. First, he managed to beat Djokovic at the Atp Finals before losing to him in the final of the Atp year-end championship.
However, only a few days later, the two met again, this time at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, and once again, it was the Italian player who won the match, to keep Italy alive.
Then, he dressed up for doubles, teamed up with Lorenzo Sonego, and once again, managed to beat Serbia's Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic to secure the country's spot in the final.
However, the most important moment came probably in the singles match, when Sinner saved three consecutive match points and went on to beat Djokovic after that, something that no...
