Tonight’s Oscar telecast featured a sincere (at least at first) black-and-white tribute to a film industry luminary named Otto Desć.
Despite the praise heaped on Desć by actor-director Elizabeth Banks, actor Ron Perelman, cinematographer Mandy Walker and visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert, it turns out that he doesn’t actually exist. Instead, the spoof commercial is for Autodesk (get it?), a technology vendor with increasing ambitions in Hollywood. (Watch the full video above.)
The commercial was produced by Maximum Effort, Ryan Reynolds’ creative agency and Kimmelot, with the latter’s Dan Sanborn. The spoof gave Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel a voice even during the night’s ad breaks. Two teasers for the full mini-doc aired earlier in the show, laying it on thick about Desć before the final segment revealed the ruse, with the on-screen talent discovering it along with viewers.

On Saturday, August 11th, the ninth annual Apollo In the Hamptons was held at the East Hampton home of Apollo Vice Chairman Ronald O. Perelman to benefit the non-profit Apollo Theater.
This year’s event raised millions of dollars to support the Apollo’s artistic, educational, and outreach programs, while building on the Theater’s rich history as a cultural and economic anchor to Harlem, and as a nurturer of emerging talent.
Since its inception in 2010, the Apollo in the Hamptons has raised over $20 million for the Apollo’s artistic, education and community programs. Thanks to the support from this event, the institution has expanded its education initiatives, both in schools and at the historic Apollo Theater engaging more than 20,000 students, teachers, families, and scholars annually. The Theater has been able to double its impact, now welcoming more than 200,000 patrons each year.

Barbra Streisand, co-founder of the Women’s Heart Alliance, was in the nation’s capitol last week to deliver the prestigious J. Edward Rall Cultural Lecture at the National Institutes of Health and raise awareness about women’s heart health and cardiovascular disease (Cvd), which kills more women each year in the U.S. than all cancers combined.
Barbra Streisand at the lectern for the J. Edward Rall Cultural Lecture
In her talk, Ms. Streisand spoke about the urgent need for sex-specific research and health equity for women to reduce preventable deaths from heart disease, which claims the lives of nearly 400,000 women each year. Previous Rall Lecture speakers include luminaries such as the Dalai Lama, Maya Angelou and Yo-Yo Ma.
“For too long cardiovascular disease has been considered a man’s disease – not just from a patient perspective, but also in the way it’s approached in prevention, treatment and research.

The refreshingly outspoken and fiercely honest Ellen Barkin -- for evidence check out her new Twitter account -- hit the big screen this month in the searing drama "Another Happy Day," along with co-stars Thomas Haden Church, Demi Moore and Ellen Burstyn.
The 57-year-old refused to discuss rumors that she is dating the film's director, Sam Levinson, but had plenty to tell The Huffington Post about her beef with Fox News, her frequently talked-about face and getting married at an older age.
"Another Happy Day" takes place during a family wedding, which seems like a breeding ground for drama. Where does that come from?
I see it as a film about communication, a film about everyone's desperate need to be heard and the very real fact that nobody is listening anymore to each other. I see this family as a microcosm of the world we live in. I see the big theme as,...

Actress Ellen Barkin's representative has shut down reports suggesting the actress is set to wed for the third time.
The Ocean's Thirteen star found her love life under scrutiny earlier this year when it emerged the 57 year old was dating writer/director Sam Levinson, the 26-year-old son of moviemaker Barry Levinson, who directed Barkin in her breakthrough 1980s film Diner.
The couple has been in a low-key relationship for three years and editors at the National Enquirer this week (begs19Sep11) suggested Barkin was so taken by Levinson, she had proposed to her young beau. They went on to allege the lovers were planning to become man and wife in early 2012.
A source told the publication, "Ellen is madly in love with Sam and wants to spend the rest of her life with him. She proposed marriage while they were walking on the beach one late afternoon in August. Sam didn't skip a beat (didn't hesitate) before accepting."
However, Barkin's publicist Stephen Huvane has dismissed the rumours.
He tells WENN, "It's all a fabricated story."
Barkin has been married twice before - to Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, with whom she has two kids, and businessman Ron Perelman. The second union ended in a messy divorce in 2006.

Actress Ellen Barkin and her ex-husband have settled an ongoing dispute with a film company they co-founded.
The Sea of Love star and Ron Perelman divorced in 2006 and have been battling over Applehead Pictures LLC ever since.
The company's bosses sued Perelman in 2007, claiming the Revlon Inc chairman failed to make promised payments to cover operating expenses.
Perelman was ordered to pay more than $4 million (£2.6 million) to the company last year, but he appealed the decision, which was upheld by an appeals court last month.
Perelman's attorney has confirmed the billionaire has settled the dispute. No details of the settlement have been released.

It wasn't The Big Easy but it was easy enough. Perelman alleged that after he left the Ocean's Thirteen star and initiated divorce proceedings to end their tumultuous five-year...

Actress Ellen Barkin has emerged triumphant in her ongoing court battle with ex-husband Ron Perelman after a New York judge upheld a decision ordering the businessman to hand over $4.4 million (£2.93 million) for breach of contract.
The Ocean's Thirteen star launched Applehead Pictures with her brother, George, in November 2005 and Perelman, the chairman of cosmetics giant Revlon Inc., agreed to make quarterly investments in her production company in 2006 and 2007.
But the couple split in 2006 and Perelman's payments ceased, prompting Barkin to sue for breach of contract the following year. Under the terms of their agreement, billionaire Perelman was expected to pour a total of $3.4 million (£2.27 million) into the firm.
Perelman countersued the Barkins, accusing the pair of misappropriating funds to finance the launch of another company.
New York State Supreme Court Justice Debra James ruled in Barkin's favour in December 2009, but Perelman challenged the decision and took the case to the State Appeals Court in Manhattan.
However, the appeals panel rejected his motion during a hearing on Thursday, backing up Judge James' order for Perelman to pay up with interest.
But he is refusing to accept the decision and has vowed to fight on.
Perelman's spokeswoman, Christine Taylor, tells the New York Post's gossip column Page Six, "We still maintain Ms. Barkin should not be entitled to any additional money beyond the enormous settlement she received five years ago. Mr Perelman has moved on from this and is leaving it to his attorneys to handle the still-pending claims against Ms. Barkin and others based on their misconduct in managing and controlling Applehead Pictures."...

Ellen Barkin's tycoon ex-husband Ron Perelman has remarried in an intimate New York ceremony, serenaded by rocker John Mellencamp.
The billionaire tied the knot with Dr. Anna Chapman on Wednesday night on the roof of his Manhattan home, two months after losing his latest court battle with the Ocean's Eleven actress, reports the New York Daily News.
Chapman is Perelman's fifth wife. He was married to Barkin from 2000 to 2006, a union that ended with a messy divorce. She successfully sued the Revlon cosmetics boss in August and was awarded $4.4 million (£2.75 million) after a court ruled he had reneged on a promise to invest in her production company.

Not only is actress Ellen Barkin, 56, enjoying raves for her almost unrecognizable role as a sullen drug-addict mother in "Chameleon," which recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, but, according to the NY Post, she also just won a tidy $4.3 million lawsuit against her Revlon billionaire ex-husband Ron Perelman.
She and Ron were only married for five reportedly tumultuous years. In 2006, Perelman conveniently filed for and quickly got a divorce, just days before the prenup would have kicked in, giving Ellen more alimony.
She still got a decent chunk, some $2-3 million a year. And after the divorce, she also sold all the jewelry Ron had given her for an estimated $16-20 million.
But Ron had also signed an agreement to make four capital contributions to her film production company, for a total of $3.4 million.

Actress Ellen Barkin has won a $4.4 million (£2.75 million) pay out from her ex-husband Ron Perelman after she accused him of reneging on a promise to invest in her production company.
The Ocean's Thirteen star, 55, launched Applehead Pictures with her brother, George Barkin, in November 2005 and Perelman, the chairman of cosmetics giant Revlon Inc., agreed to make four investments per year in 2006 and 2007 to his then-wife's company.
The couple split in 2006 and Perelman's payments ceased, prompting Barkin to file suit for breach of contract in 2007.
Under the terms of their agreement, billionaire Perelman was expected to pour a total of $3.4 million (£2.13 million) into the firm.
New York State Supreme Court Justice Debra James ruled in Barkin's favour on 21 December and made the decision public on Friday.
James ordered Perelman to hand over the $3.4 million (£2.13 million) investment plus nine per cent interest dating to 1 January, 2007, amounting to more than $900,000 (£562,500).
Perelman countersued the Barkin siblings in response to the 2007 lawsuit, accusing the pair of misappropriating funds to finance the launch of another company.
That legal action continues.

Celine Dion's doctor is revealing details behind the star's pregnancy, according to a new report. People.com reports that Celine's physician, Dr. Zev Rosenwaks, says the star became pregnant for the second time using an IVF (in vitro fertilization) procedure which involved transferring an embryo that was kept frozen for eight years in liquid nitrogen. Celine, 41, kept the embryo frozen from the time she tried to conceive her first child, René-Charles, says People. She decided to try for a second baby in 2007, Dr. Rosenwaks adds. Rosenwaks, who is the director of the Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, tells the mag: “[Celine] is very, very early in her pregnancy.” Dr. Rosenwaks tells People that when he called the star to reveal the good news, "She was very happy. So was René. They are both very thankful."

Actress Ellen Barkin has slammed allegations she auctioned $20.3 million (£14.2 million)-worth of jewellery from her ex-husband, billionaire Ronald Perelman, for revenge - insisting it was a "practical decision".
The 54-year-old Ocean's 13 star ended her marriage to the business tycoon in 2006, claiming Perelman wouldn't allow her to pursue her acting career while they were together.
And Barkin was so worried film bosses would be reluctant to hire her after taking the prolonged hiatus, she decided to sell her expensive jewels to help support her family.
She tells the New York Daily News, "Everyone thought it was a big f**k-you (to Perelman). That's bulls**t. It was a purely practical decision. I sold them so I - and my children and my mother - would be taken care of. I sold the jewellery because I'd been out of the movie business for seven years. I was 52. Hollywood sources reported on Thursday the actress had been tapped to play a divorcee who finds herself newly single after ending her high-profile marriage in the as-yet-untitled HBO show.
But the project is actually a thinly-disguised series about her own life and her failed relationship with investor Perelman, who served her divorce papers in 2006 before evicting her from his mansion, according to the New York Post.
And the newspaper insists Barkin plans to use the show to exact revenge on her ex - by spilling all the details of their messy parting.
A source tells the publication, "There's so much source material to work with. The first week, Ellen could be out on the sidewalk in her socks screaming as the movers are loading up her things. In the second week, she could soak Ron with water."
Barkin was awarded $60 million (£42 million) after Perelman ended their six-year union - and reportedly pocketed another $20.3 million (£14.2 million) after auctioning off more than 100 jewels he had given her.

Ellen Barkin has been tapped for her first starring role in a TV series - playing an older woman who finds herself newly single after ending her high-profile marriage. Ironically, the 54-year-old actress walked out on her second husband, billionaire investor Ron Perelman, in 2006.
The actress, whose role in 1997 miniseries Before Women Had Wings earned her a Golden Globe nomination, will also produce the untitled half-hour pilot episode for U.S. cable network HBO.
Scriptwriter Shauna Cross says, “You have this character in her early 50s... whose life explodes unexpectedly. Her nerve and life experience allows her to tell the world to go screw itself, and they love her for it.”...

Actress Ellen Barkin has branded her ex-husband Ron Perelman's lawsuit against her "a cynical abuse of the legal system". The Revlon cosmetics boss launched legal action against Barkin and her brother George on Wednesday, claiming they stole money from a production company he financed. But Michelle Benson, Barkin's spokeswoman, has issued a statement, calling Perelman's lawsuit "frivolous" and "without merit." Perelman alleges the Barkins formed Applehead II to compete with Applehead I - which he had formed with them - and then stole money from the original company to pay for their new one. He also claims she used his money to pay for a lawsuit she filed against him, and pay George Barkin a $250,000-a-year salary. He is seeking unspecified compensatory damages, punitive damages and the return of misappropriated assets. Perelman and Barkin, 54, divorced in 2006.

Actress Ellen Barkin is suing her ex-husband Ronald Perelman for $3.4 million, insisting he promised the amount to her production company before their break-up. The couple split in 2006 after seven years together, and Barkin has already been awarded $40 million in her divorce from the billionaire businessman. However, in a suit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on Tuesday, the actress alleges she's still owed more. She claims Perelman promised to pay more than $3 million to her new production company Applehead Pictures in 2005 when he became partners with her and her brother George Barkin. Her suit says the money was due "in eight payments, four each during 2006 and 2007." She adds, "Despite numerous requests to abide by the terms of his agreement, Perelman has not made a single one of these payments." A spokeswoman for Perelman tells PageSix.com he's waiting until given evidence the production company has actually produced anything, insisting, "She (Barkin) has not complied with any of her obligations under the agreement."...
