Las Vegas has not been kind to John, a semi-recovered gambling addict played by Steve Buscemi. In order to exorcise his unlucky demons, John makes a new life for himself in Albuquerque, New Mexico, taking a desk job at an insurance company. It's there that he spends his day shuffling paperwork and kibitzing with Jill, played by Sarah Silverman. Jill, a quirky and colorful worker bee, has got a few issues of her own, not the least of which is a kooky addiction to smiley face paraphernalia. In a daily battle against the urge to gamble, John makes due with buying lottery tickets from the local convenience store, and vows to stay away from Vegas. His plan works well until John's boss, Mr. Townsend, portrayed by a sharp and witty Peter Dinklage, lures him back with a challenge. Townsend appeals to John's desire to make more money by promoting him to fraud investigator.

In writer/director Hue Rhodes’ Saint John Of Las Vegas, a retelling of Dante Alighieri’s classic “Dante’s Inferno,” insurance salesman John (Steve Buscemi, giving one of his best performances to date) has left his past life as a gambler without lady luck on his arm. That is, until fate pulls him back towards the vile temptress known as Las Vegas, as he must return for his first case as a newly promoted fraud investigator. Paired with veteran fraud investigator and sidekick Virgil (Weeds’ Romany Malco), the two set out on an epic journey, encountering along the way a sexy & smiley face obsessed coworker (Sarah Silverman), a wheelchair-bound stripper, a human torch, and an armed nudist colony. And that’s only the top of this twisted deck of cards!

Director: Hue Rhodes Writer: Hue Rhodes Starring: Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Peter Dinklage, Sarah Silverman, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho, Matthew McDuffie We are introduced to John Alighieri (Steve Buscemi) – a last name he shares with the writer of the short story on which this film is based, Dante Alighieri – as he attempts to buy $1,000 worth of instant lottery tickets at a Las Vegas gas station (with cold hard cash, of course). Before we are allowed to learn whether or not he will be successful in purchasing the hefty sum of tickets, let alone win, first time writer-director Hue Rhodes's film jumps back a few days to when John was stuck in a hopelessly monotonous cubicle job as an insurance claims adjuster in Albuquerque, New Mexico. (As it turns out, the intro was merely a tease – a cheap writing trick, if you will – to keep the audience...

Now playing in NY and La is St. John of Las Vegas, the debut feature of writer-director Hue Rhodes. The picture gives Steve Buscemi a too-rare leading role as John Alighieri, a man with a gambling problem who is sent to investigate an insurance claim on the outskirts of the Nevada casino capital. Also amongst the cast are Romany Malco, Sarah Silverman and Peter Dinklage. The film is pricked with references to Dante's Inferno, though certainly has it's own narrative which requires no knowledge of the Divine Comedy to understand - think how the Coen Bros. and Homer blended into O Brother Where Art Thou. And whereas the Coens' film stood on the shoulders of Preston Sturgess, the equivalent influence on St. John would appear likely to be Ozu or Milos Forman. After the break you can read my edited transcript of some of what Hue has said to me...

With "St. John of Las Vegas," which opens in limited release Friday, new producer/distributor IndieVest is rolling the dice on a new business model.
Directed by Hue Rhodes, the film stars Steve Buscemi, Sarah Silverman and Romany Malco in a dramedy about an ex-gambler lured back to the tables.
Headed by president of production Mark Burton, the two-year-old company is more akin to a mutual fund than it is to an indie production company.
High net worth investors buy into IndieVest, which allows them the opportunity to invest in a slate of their choosing as well as to enjoy the perks of the indie film circuit, parties and all.
If a film does well, the company's investors stand first in line for a return on their investment -- a film's first-dollar gross goes back into investors' pockets. No distribution fees or other costs are deducted. For its own pockets,...

Steve Buscemi has never had a movie-star face, but he’s always had the perfect face for Steve Buscemi: a wearied, disjointed visage with bags of disappointment beneath the eyes and an expression forever torn between lashing out in rage and retreating in fear. It’s a pleasure to see Buscemi take a rare lead role in St. John Of Las Vegas, the feature debut of writer-director Hue Rhodes. It’s doubly pleasurable to see him in a part so suited to his strengths, even though he ends up working double-time to anchor material that wants to float away in ...

Somewhere around the late summer of 2005, actor Romany Malco seemingly materialized out of nowhere to find breakout success in both "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and TV's "Weeds," and has continued to be a sly comedic force to be reckoned with in such films as "Blades of Glory," "Baby Mama" and "The Love Guru." Unlike so many of his Hollywood co-stars therein, Malco didn't actually springboard out of stand-up or sketch comedy, and even acting came completely by accident (one could say light coercion, but more on that later). No, Malco's showbiz path began as a young member of the hip-hop foursome the College Boyz, whose radio hit "Victim of the Ghetto" made the Billboard Hot 100 back in the early '90s. And while we're on the subject of rap, one of his earliest performances was in the title role of VH1's 2001 movie "Too Legit: The Mc Hammer Story.

Anyone who has ever gambled in a Las Vegas casino probably has encountered that awful downturn, the moment where your luck starts to turn bad and then even worse; soon, you've lost all the money you've gained as well as the money you had when you sat down. (Or maybe that's just us!) That sinking feeling seems to be the normal pattern suffered by Steve Buscemi's John Alighieri in Hue Rhodes' comedy Saint John of Las Vegas until he leaves Vegas and takes a job working at an insurance company in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While trying to get a raise to impress his cute cubicle neighbor Jill (Sarah Silverman), John is coerced by his tough boss (Peter Dinklage) to team with the company's top fraud investigator Virgil, played by Romany Malco ( The 40-Year-Old Virgin ), to look into...

Hue Rhodes is every professor.s dream. He may have arrived at Nyu to study film rather late compared to his peers, but his drive to succeed and passion for the art made him a model student. During a roundtable interview, the first time writer/director gushed about all he learned at school and how it made him the filmmaker he is today. His mentors should be proud because his feature debut, Saint John of Las Vegas, makes its way into theaters in New York and Los Angeles on January 29th with a wider release planned for February 12th. What.s even more impressive is the brilliant minds he attracted to join the project. Not only does the film star Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Sarah Silverman, Peter Dinklage, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho and Emmanuelle Chriqui, but it.s executive produced by Buscemi, Wren Arthur, Stanley Tucci and Spike Lee.

Steve Buscemi is one of our most recognizable character actors. In the recent "The Messenger," a Grade-a film about a pair of soldiers whose duty is to go to the families of the war deceased to offer condolence, Buscemi registers in a serious role. He's a guy who has just been told that his son was killed in action and who reacts in an abusive manner, as though his visitors are not just the messengers. Here in Saint John, he monopolizes the screen, but sad to say, the road trip/buddy movie is trite, offers nothing new, is surprisingly unfunny, even embarrassing when writer-director Hue Rhodes features scene between Buscemi's character as that of a co-worker in his insurance company.

Did you like "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" I did, and quite a bit too. The performers and performances are great of course, but the story is what sticks with you. It is loosely (very loosely, like almost unrecognizably so) adapted from Homer's Greek epic "The Odyssey," and it makes reference to the original work in a number of clever ways.
I get the same vibe from "Saint John of Las Vegas," an upcoming movie directed by Hue Rhodes that offers a similarly loose interpretation of "Dante's Inferno." Steve Buscemi stars as a recovering gambler who is tempted to return to the glitz and glamor when a business opportunity arises that will bring him back to Nevada's bastion of legalized gambling. Today we have some exclusive images from the film to share with you. Just click the image below to check out our full gallery.

I'll be up front about it:
This ain't the greatest trailer. It looks like a funny movie that was edited into a lousy trailer. At least, that's what I'm hoping happened, because there's a lot to love about Saint John of Las Vegas. It's the first film directed by Hue Rhodes (who also wrote the screenplay), so that's obviously a bit of a concern. It's about an ex-gambler whose straight job ends up sending him back to Vegas, the site of his old life's woes. Hijinks apparently ensue.
The goods far outweigh the potential bads. For one? Steve Buscemi, who is consistently excellent, even when he's in lousy movies. Romany Malco, otherwise known as Jay in The 40 Year-Old Virgin ("You ever heard of Rollin' 20s, nigga? Since I was sixteen, nigga. I'm saying, "frosty." You know what I'm saying? "Spoon", nigga. Hey, speaking of The Hangover (weren't we?), the 11th annual CineVegas Film Festival kicked off last night at Planet Hollywood, on the world-famous, super-classy, not-at-all-gaudy Las Vegas Strip. The setting was a large theater above the casino floor that normally hosts a live production called Peepshow, the posters for which emphasize its primary assets and boobsets.
But the showgirls had the night off, and CineVegas took over. Festival chairman Dennis Hopper kicked off the event in true Vegas style, rising from a trapdoor in the stage to the accompaniment of "Born to Be Wild." I noted that he pronounces the festival's name "sinny-vegas," rather than "sin-uh-vegas." His version sounds more cheerful. Vegas is sinny! Come visit!

With the fourth season Weeds coming to a close, the show’s actors are now spreading their wings to conquer other more challenging acting gigs. In fact, two of the stars of Weeds are currently working on bigger endeavors that see them on Broadway and in film.
Romany Malco, who played Nancy Botwin’s (Mary-Louise Parker) business partner and love interest Conrad Shepard, is now working on a feature film entitled Saint John of Las Vegas, based on an adaptation of Dante’s Inferno, script-written by Hue Rhodes. In the film, Malco plays a maverick insurance fraud investigator who becomes a mentor to an ex-gambler, played by Steve Buscemi. - There's just something about Steve Buscemi that's irresistible. Sure, he looks a little creepy, and he's always picking really strange parts. From incidental pedophile (Ghost World) to killer (Reservoir Dogs), he's somehow impossible to dislike. Now, Buscemi is adding another role to his handsome resume: star of Saint John of Las Vegas.Based upon Dante's Inferno, Las Vegas tells the story of an ex-gambler (Buscemi) and an insurance fraud investigator (Romany Malco). While not much other information is currently available, the cast is enough to spark some interest: along with Buscemi and Malco, Emily Mortimer, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Peter Dinklage star. This picture marks the first feature-length venture for writer/director Hue Rhodes and Buscemi's Olive Productions. The film will be produced by Mark Burton and Matt Wall (IndieVest), Lawrence Mattis and Kelly McCormick (Circle of Confusion). Buscemi, Stanley Tucci, Wren Arthur, and Spike Lee will executive produce.
