Oscar 2014 predictions (photo: Amy Adams and Christian Bale in ‘American Hustle’) Below are our last-minute Oscar 2014 predictions. The 86th Academy Award nominations are going to be announced on Thursday, January 16, at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. We will be posting the list of Oscar 2014 nominations here. “The Grandmaster” ( or “The Grandmasters” depending on your location ) is director Kar Wai Wong‘s first attempt at the kung-fu genre. His most notable successes have mostly been about the pain of lost romance ( “My Blueberry Nights“, “2046” and “In The Mood For Love” instantly come to mind ) so it’s no surprise that “Yi Dai Zong Shi” is a mixed bag of good and bad.
The story spans a few decades, starting in the early 1930′s. The premise of the movie is simple enough:Gong Yutian ( Qingxiang Wang ), a renowned master of China’s Southern and Northern styles of martial arts, comes to town to celebrate his eventual retirement. It’s at the Golden Pavilion, the number one brothel in the region, that he decides to make the big announcement.

The summer season has, over the past few decades, become synonymous with movie blockbuster season, as studios have found the months of May to August to contain the most profitable release dates for big-budget tentpole features, leading to the summer of recent years being filled with superhero films, big budget CGI features, and other tentpole movies that draw in huge crowds. This year is no different, as Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is set to kick off the summer movie season as May rolls around. However, this doesn’t mean non-blockbuster features don’t make their way to theatres during this time, and for those looking for smaller features, there are plenty of viewing options. Here are ten of our most anticipated non-blockbuster features set to be released over the next few months.
Author’s note: All films were selected based on their release date in American theatres.

★★★☆☆ Opening the 63rd Berlin Film Festival is Grand Jury president Wong Kar-wai's highly anticipated, years-in-the-making martial arts epic, The Grandmaster (Yi dai zong shi, 2013). Ostensibly a biopic about real-life Wing Chun master Ip Man (Tony Leung), who famously trained Bruce Lee, Kar-wai's sumptuous kung-fu tale is a far more commercially viable and straightforward entry into his otherwise artistic oeuvre, culminating in a paradoxical experiment in genre transference. Opening in the year 1936, the martial arts community of the Southern Chinese province of Foshan is growing restless about the imminent retirement of Master Gong Yutian (Wang Qingxiang).
