- Served in the Royal Tank Regiment.
- Served as General Secretary and then Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). in the 1980s. At his death he was serving as the Vice President.
- Between 1958 and 1987 he served in several London parishes and as a chaplain to the University of London.
- Received a law degree from Brasenose College, Oxford.
- Was an Honorary Fellow of Brasenose College.
- Was awarded the archbishop of Canterbury's Lambeth Cross for Ecumenism.
- Had a sister, Rosemary, and a brother.
- At the time of his death he was also Vice President of Pax Christi, the Christian peace organization, and Emeritus President of the Movement for the Abolition of War.
- Was ordained a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Westminster.
- Both his parents were Canadian.
