Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, getting an 11-minute, 40-second ovation after the credits began rolling at the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
The three-hour movie is the first chapter of a planned four-part series directed by and starring Costner, who soaked in the applause along his fellow stars including Sienna Miller, Alejandro Edda, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Georgia MacPhail, Ella Hunt, Isabelle Fuhrman, Wasé Chief, Luke Wilson and Costner’s son Hayes Logan Costner.
Costner waved at the crowd and seemed humbled by the applause tonight. “There’s no place like here — I’ll never forget this,” he told the audience in brief remarks. “I made this [movie] … it’s not mine anymore this is yours, and I knew that the minute it was over.”
“I feel so lucky, so blessed,” he said, adding after a pause, “There’s three more.

Kevin Costner was honored with France’s Order of Arts and Letter at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, ahead of the Out of Competition world premiere of his two-part Western epic Horizon: An American Saga.
“You represent the America of wide spaces, the America of free minds, the America of cinema and the love of culture that we share on both sides of the Atlantic,” French Culture Minister Rachida Dati said in a speech paying tribute to the actor.
She went on to declare, “I will always love you” ahead of pinning the honorary ribbon medal to Costner’s white suit, in reference to his role in 1992 blockbuster The Bodyguard opposite Whitney Houston and its record-breaking hit track ‘I Always Love You’.

The failure of France’s The Taste of Things to secure an Oscar nomination for best international film this year has discomfited the French film industry as it marks the fourth year a French film has not made the final five.
Talk is now already turning to whether this could mean further change on the horizon for its selection committee.
Justine Triet’s Anatomy Of A Fall, the film the committee opted not to select, secured five major nominations, for best picture, best director, best actress, best original screenplay and best film editing.

French prosecutors have dismissed the complaint filed by French actor Hélène Darras alleging that Gerard Depardieu sexually assaulted her during the filming of “Disco” in 2007.
In a statement sent to Variety, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office said the complaint filed on Sept. 10, 2023 will be dismissed due to the statute of limitations.
The prosecutor’s spokesperson said Darras “had decided to file a distinct complaint after being auditioned as a witness during the ongoing investigation stemming from the lawsuit by Charlotte Arnould” in 2018. Depardieu was indicted on rape charges in connection to that case in 2020.
Darras was one of the 13 women who accused Depardieu of sexual misconduct in an investigative story that ran in Mediapart in April 2023. Spanish journalist Ruth Baza also said she had filed an official complaint against the actor in Spain after being allegedly assaulted during an interview in Paris in 1995, which is beyond the 20-year statute of limitation in France.

A week after being appointed culture minister and slammed by an avalanche of criticism, famed politician Rachida Dati has officially entered the ring.
Dati went off-script and delivered an unfiltered speech — starting with “I’m not asking you to love me, what I want is to convince you” — to a room full of film and TV players on Thursday evening during a ceremony honoring actor Melvil Poupaud, who received the French Cinema Award.
While on stage, Dati said she will strive to democratize culture during her tenure.
“Culture in schools and civic sense go hand-in-hand. When you look at schools in certain areas which are ridden with problems, you’ll notice that it’s often places where culture has taken a backseat,” she said. Dati also spoke about her own relationship with culture, admitting she saw a movie in a cinema for the first time at the age of 21 but...

This week’s surprise news of conservative politician Rachida Dati becoming France’s new Culture Minister provoked an earthquake within the country’s predominantly left-leaning film and TV industry.
Dati was appointed on Jan. 11 to succeed Rima Abdul Malak as Culture Minister as part of a reshuffle of France’s President Emmanuel Macron, which also saw 34-year-old Gabriel Attal becoming Prime Minister.
A combative straight shooter with an acerbic of humor and a definite sense of style, Dati is currently mayor of the posh 7th arrondissement where she regularly mingles with stars residing in the neighborhood. But her appointment as Culture Minister was welcomed with vitriolic headlines across the media and was called out by a large chunk of the film and TV biz as a casting error. The high profile politician is seen as a potential threat to the industry’s unique model of “cultural exception,” where independent, diverse filmmaking is nurtured through subsidies,...

Has #MeToo Finally Arrived in France?
Watershed: The past week has felt like a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement in France. The country’s film industry has been at the forefront of efforts to foster gender parity thanks to pioneering activist group Le Collectif 50/50 and initiatives such as the festival charter, along with extra state funding for movies hiring women for key crew positions. However, a culture of silence around allegations of sexual abuse by big figures such as Roman Polanski and Gérard Depardieu has long been a source of debate and consternation in and outside of the country. There are signs that a major shift is underway following a bombshell...

Newly appointed French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal took France’s political and media spheres by surprise on Thursday as he named controversial politician Rachida Dati as his culture minister.
Her arrival in the new-look centrist cabinet was unexpected given that Dati was a spokesperson for centre-right President Nicolas Sarkozy during his presidential campaign and was Justice Minister from 2007 to 2009 under his presidency.
The appointment was made as part of a government cabinet reshuffle rolled out by Attal just two days after he became France’s youngest ever prime minister in a move by President Emmanuel Macron to reboot his presidency, which began with a centre-left mandate but is now moving the dial to the right.
Dati replaces Rima Abdul Malak whose position has been looking fragile in recent weeks after she found herself at odds with Macron over her suggestion that Gérard Depardieu should be stripped of his Legion Of...

Memoir by French President Hollande’s former partner has sold more than 730,000 copies in France and been published across Europe and in the Us.
France’s former unofficial first lady Valerie Trierweiler’s account of her failed relationship with President Francois Hollande is set to hit the big screen, French media reported on Monday.
Actress and producer Saida Jawad, who is also a close friend of Trierweiler, told celebrity magazine Gala that she was developing an adaptation of the journalist’s political kiss-and-tell Thank You For This Moment (Merci Pour Ce Moment).
“Romarin Film, my production company, in agreement with Valerie, is currently developing an adaptation of the best-seller and envisages a co-production with French and international companies,” Jawad told the magazine.
“It will be fictionalised biopic in which the protagonist tells her story to a confidante, as a way of better understanding this political universe and the woman. I guarantee that we’ll unveil new things...

Inspired by British satire In The Loop, first French film to tell story of a serving president breaks last taboo
It threatens to be so true to life that it's more like a documentary than a feature film. "I'm surrounded by cretins!" shouts a stack-heeled, would-be French president at his terrified advisers. "Remember, I'm a Ferrari. When you open the bonnet, you use white gloves."
When the Cannes film festival opens next week, it will break the last taboo in French film. La Conquête, a scathing portrait of Nicolas Sarkozy's rise to power - the first French feature film brave enough to tackle a serving president - will be shown on La Croisette after a row over whether officials wanted to sideline it to spare the Elysée's blushes.
Inspired by the merciless British satire In the Loop, and subtitled "The man who won the presidency, but lost a wife...

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is suspecting former Justice Minister Rachida Dati of being the mastermind behind the rumours that he and his wife Carla Bruni were having extra-marital affairs, a media report said. Though a probe is still on to determine the source of the rumours, Sarkozy suspects Dati and he has stripped the 44-year-old of her ministerial perks, including bodyguards and a chauffeur-driven limosine, the Daily Mail reported. Dati was also kicked out of a five-star hotel in Geneva and downgraded to a cheaper accommodation yesterday during a government visit, on the orders of the 55-year-old French President, ...
