National Award-winning filmmaker Bhavna Talwar is gearing up to direct a biopic of late iconic filmmaker-actor Guru Dutt.
The biopic is titled "Pyaasa", just like Dutt's iconic films of 1957, and Talwar is in the process of casting the actors for her film. Guru Dutt's life was intense and complex, and it took Talwar seven years to pen the story. Still, instead of an elaborate storytelling format like a web series, she has opted to make a feature film to encapsulate her subject's journey.
"He was a larger-than-life personality and within 10 years he had seen it all -- success as a filmmaker, actor, the commercial success of his cinema, admiration of his fans as an actor, and he also found the companionship of Geeta Dutt, his co-star and wife. At the same time, there is melancholy. You cannot cramp that into a small screen. It deserves a feature film format," Talwar told Ians.

Okay, we forgive Zee5 all its trespasses of excesses. By rescuing director Bhavna Talwar’s exquisite black-and-white homage to the great Charlie Chaplin, Happi, Zee5 has shown us what the streaming platform should actually be used for.
A film like Happi comes once in a blue moon. It is a daringly unconventional film and not the least unexpected from the very talented director Bhavna Talvar whose Dharm in 2007 featured Pankaj Kapoor in yet another career-defining role.
Happi is a film that will go down in history as India’s only genuine tribute to the genius of Charlie Chaplin. Doing the homage (never an impersonation) the great Pankaj Kapoor immerses himself in the character of the capricious naïve pure-hearted Happi, a chawl dweller who is the brunt of ridicule in an Iranian club where he sings and does stand-up comedy to eke out a living. He is fairly ridiculous. But happy when humoured.

Nakkash
Starring Inaamulhaq, Sharib Hashmi, Kumud Mishra
Written & Directed by Zaigham Imam
Varanasi has hosted many recent films. Nakkash takes us into the uncomfortable and ruinous realm of the communal divide. It steps in the thorny theme without prejudice and with complete awareness of going down a road that offers no solace from the harsh sun. There is a liberating sense of innocence in Zaigham Imam’s tale of worship and duplicity, of politicians and priests, and the uneasy alliance between politics and religion, of single parenthood and post middleage marriage.
Above all Nakkash is the tale of friendship between two men of lowly means Allahrakha (Inaamulhaq) , a craftsman who carves figures in gold on temple walls , is a single father who is raising his little son with the help of his best friend Samad (Sharib Hashmi). It’s heartwarming how the little boy refers to his father and his...

After Tabu's power packed performance in Vishal Bhardwaj's Haider (adaptation of Hamlet), it is now the turn of the British actress Wendy Glenn to play the role of Hamlet's mother Gertrude in Onir's Veda, which happens to be his adaptation of the Shakespearean classic. Readers may know Wendy Glenn for her roles in American TV shows like CSI: Miami and You're Next. Talking about roping in Wendy for the film, National award filmmaker Onir added, "Wendy is a phenomenal actor and we are so happy to have her as part of the film. She immerses herself in the character, which is such a wonderful quality. She is as stunning a person as she is as an actor." Simultaneously expressing her pleasure of working on an Indian film Glenn says, "It is such a pleasure to be working with Onir, my co-actors, Bhavna and the team and on such an amazing script.

Bart Ruspoli and Freddie Hutton-Mills, the duo who directed the hit 2014 horror film Cryptic began shooting Genesis, India's first sci-fi film, in the UK from this week. The film being produced by Sheetal and Bhavna Talwar, is being made on the same scale as sci-fi classics like the Star Wars series Gravity and Inception. Though the Talwars are not willing to divulge the exact budget, it is reported to be close to 80 million dollars. Laughs Sheetal Talwar, "Why are we talking dollars when the film is being produced by us and being shot in the UK? But yes, jokes aside Genesis is a very expensive and ambitious film. We were lucky to get Bart and Freddie on board." Bart and Freddie operate the SFX Company Next Level Films which will supervise all the technical aspects of Genesis. Bart and Freddie are also on board as co-producers of the film. Says Sheetal proudly,...

Even as Vishal Bhardwaj gets set to unleash his own version Shakespeare's Hamlet in the quirky form of Shahid Kapoor, director Onir has gone ahead and signed newcomer Ashish Bisht to play Hamlet in Veda.
Ashish is a complete newcomer, with no acting experience. He has been modeling on the ramp and in product endorsements for some years.
What made Onir choose a complete novice to play what is arguably the most complicated male character ever written? Explains Onir, "I chose Ashish to play Hamlet for his vulnerable and sensitive looks. Apart from that he's also talented and hard-working. Hamlet according to me is gentle, fragile and volatile. Ashish has all these qualities."
Ashish Bisht was chosen after extensive auditioning. "We've been looking for our Hamlet for over a year now. I auditioned innumerable others before zeroing in on Ashish. Both my producer Bhavna Talwar and I thought he was the ideal choice,...

On Tuesday afternoon the Deputy Prime Minister of the UK, Nick Clegg gave the Mahurat shot of Onir's Hamlet adaptation Veda. Curiously the event , attended by Onir dear friends Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri, was held at the Taj hotel in Colaba where the dastardly 26/11 attacks had happened. In fact the Mahurat shot was taken in one of the rooms that was under terror attack. Nick Clegg had never before attended any Bollywood event and was quite fascinated by the proceedings. Says Veda's producer Bhavna Talwar, "It was an exceptional honour to have the honourable Deputy Prime Minister of the UK at our Mahurat. I suppose the fact that we are doing an adaptation of Shakespeare must have influenced his decision to be at the event." Clegg who hobnobbed with Veda director Onir, producer Bhavna Talwar and Juhi Chawla said, "Amid the colour, the drama and the spectacle of Bollywood,...

Today marked the deadline for submissions and the Academy will soon announce the complete list of films accepted for consideration as this year's race for the Foreign Language category may prove a little more interesting now that the entire voting membership of the Academy can vote for the category, though the nominations will still be determined by a committee. What effect the rule change will have on the end results will be hard to determine since we won't know how it would have happened otherwise, but opening the opportunity to more members can't be a bad thing. Bad things are brewing around the category,...

Abhishek Bachchan is the likeliest candidate for the part of the man who carried India, kicking and dragging, into the 21st century. The Rajiv Gandhi bio-pic to be directed by Bhavna Talwar would now be made with the consent and approval of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. While the film's director and her husband producer Sheetal Talwar have zeroed in on a number of British and Indian actors who would possibly play Rajiv (among them Colin Firth, Riz Ahmed and Abhishek Bachchan) it is the casting of an actress to play Sonia Gandhi that's proving more problematic, and a problem that needs to be sorted out at the earliest, since the Talwars would be meeting Mrs. Gandhi next month in Delhi over the Rajiv Gandhi bio-pic to give her a low-down of the content. Says a source close to the project, "Bhavna Talwar would be making the film in complete harmony with Mrs.

It's decidedly a first at the Vatican. On Tuesday, May 22, the Pope Benedict XVI and his colleagues at the Vatican City will be watching a Bollywood film, and that too a film that espouses the teachings of Hinduism and propagates the virtues of secularism by showing its rigid Hindu Pundit hero (Pankaj Kapoor) embracing an orphaned Muslim child as his own.
The film is Bhavna Talwar's Dharm released in 2007. So what took the Vatican so long to wake up to Talwar's film's message on the one-ness of religion and human-kind?
"I don't know!" says the stunned director who is now working on a bio-pic on Rajiv Gandhi. "It was done by an Italian friend, a filmmaker named Franco la Cecla who's close to the Vatican. It was he who thought Dharm is a work that the Pope and the Vatican should see. I think it is the message of...

The success of the black-and-white silent film The Artist seems to have goaded the makers of the new Pankaj Kapoor film Happi into action. Like The Artist, Happi featuring Pankaj Kapoor in a Charlie Chaplinesque avatar, was originally shot in colour and was converted into black-and-white. There is now talk of turning Happi into a silent film, just like The Artist. However, Bhavna Talwar denies being inspired by The Artist in any direct way. Says Bhavna, "We did convert our film into black-and-white. But that happened long before The Artist was completed and released. When we decided on the conversion, we had never heard of The Artist. But yes, it's great to see some another filmmaker in another part of the world thinking on the same lines." In fact, it can now be revealed that post the success of The Artist, Bhavna Talwar is planning to ready a version of Happi for the international market.
