We have all spent time cursing the eternally infuriating salesman. Selling things we don’t ever seem to need or want. Always calling at the most inopportune of moments. Based on David Mamet’s acclaimed play, Glengarry Glen Ross tells the story of four middle-aged men, who are proud members of this despised breed, over the course of one long night and the following morning. Working for a real estate firm, they spend their days on the phone, enticing prospects with promises of once in a lifetime investment opportunities. Voices all smooth and friendly, introducing variations into the endlessly rehearsed and repeated pitch, trying to secure a sit. Searching for that elusive close.

Frontrunners are already forming in the Oscar race for Best Supporting Actor, according to early predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, many were recently seen by film critics and industry insiders at the Toronto, Telluride and Venice Film Festivals. We’ve confirmed most category placements with studios or campaigners, but some decisions aren’t yet final. Meantime, Gold Derby lists Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) as well as Christian Bale and Matt Damon (“Ford v. Ferrari”) in both lead and supporting categories in our prediction center.
Here are the current top 10 supporting actor picks according to racetrack odds based upon our users’ predictions as of Sept. 17:
1. Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”): Pitt doesn’t have a designated category yet, so he appears both as a lead and supporting candidate on the Gold Derby site.

Frontrunners are already forming for the Oscar Best Supporting Actor race, according to early predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, enough teaser trailers are out there, ranging from “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “The Irishman” to “Joker” and “Ford v Ferrari” to provide some sense of what at least feels like a worthy contender. We’ve confirmed category placements with studios or campaigners, but — as awards season veterans know — such labels can change later. And once the fall film fests commence, the standings will likely rapidly shift.
Here are the current top 10 supporting actor picks on the Gold Derby site, in order, as of Aug. 13:

Since the introduction of the supporting categories at the 9th Oscar ceremony, 11 performers have contended in both acting categories in the same year, with seven of them prevailing in one of their races. At the 2019 Academy Awards, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman and Oscar nominee Steve Carell are hoping to make history and join this exclusive roster of double nominees.
Kidman has earned rave reviews for her turns in “Destroyer” and “Boy Erased.” The former finds her portraying a troubled Los Angeles detective, determined to bring down an old nemesis, while the latter has Kidman in a supporting turn, portraying the mother of a young man (Lucas Hedges) who is pressured into enrolling in a gay conversion therapy program. Kidman has previous Oscar nominations for “Moulin Rouge!” (2001); “The Hours” (2002); “Rabbit Hole” (2010); and “Lion” (2016), winning for “The Hours.”
Also coming on strong this Oscar season is Carell, whose lone nomination to date came for “Foxcatcher” (2014). This year,...

From The Edge and The Untouchables, to the mighty Glengarry Glen Ross: a salute to the movie writing of David Mamet.
Spoilers ahead for The Untouchables, The Spanish Prisoner, and House Of Games
There's a moment in 1992’s Glengarry Glen Ross when Alec Baldwin, sent from head office on what he calls a “mission of mercy”, opens his motivational speech to an office of real estate salesmen by turning on Jack Lemmon’s Shelley 'The Machine' Levene.
“Put that coffee down,” he demands as Lemmon pours himself what he, probably reasonably, considers to be a well-earned cup of Joe.
“Coffee’s for closers only,” Baldwin points out, using the term for someone who can make a successful sale. The person who can close it.
“Your name’s Levene?” he asks a few moments later. “You call yourself a salesman, you son of a bitch?”
The callous disdain of this moment,...

On Saturday, 74-year-old Oscar-winning thespian Al Pacino caused a bit of a stir when he gushed about Guardians Of The Galaxy here at the Venice Film Festival, calling it “the most entertaining, inventive, beautiful film.” What followed in the comments on my story about it were calls for him to join the Gotg sequel. So, when I sat down with him later, I had to ask.
He told me he’d seen the film with his young children. “It was not something I would readily go see, but my kids got me to go, and one has to draw the line at where prejudice starts and where it ends — that was good stuff!” He had even more praise: “I recognized the ingenious stuff they were doing; the invention, the attractiveness of the way they were performing it. It had Shakespearian feeling to it at times. I was caught up in the big screen,...

Exclusive: UTA has just signed Liev Schreiber. Maybe it’s because I love that Showtime series Ray Donovan and especially Schreiber’s hard-edged title protagonist, but this feels like a real coup for UTA. You can tell that even though he’s a vet, Schreiber’s best work is ahead of him after this career changing role. Schreiber got a Golden Globe nomination this year for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama for Ray Donovan. Schreiber, who had been repped by CAA, recently wrapped a turn as Soviet chess master Boris Spassky in the Ed Zwick-directed Pawn Sacrifice, with Tobey Maguire playing enigmatic American chess champion Bobby Fischer. Schreiber‘s recent credits include The Reluctant Fundamentalist; Salt; X-Men Origins: Wolverine; Defiance; The Manchurian Candidate; and A Walk On The Moon. The agency will continue to help Schreiber in the small and big screen pursuits as well as stage.

With his Lacma Live Read series, Jason Reitman definitely knows A-b-c: A-Always, B-Be, C-Casting unexpected actors for roles. There was last year's all-black reading of Reservoir Dogs and now the upcoming all-female reading of the hypermasculine Glengarry Glenn Ross. The cast is as follows: Robin Wright as Al Pacino's Ricky Roma character, Catherine O'Hara as Jack Lemmon's Shelley Levene, Maria Bello as Ed Harris's Dave Moss, Mae Whitman as Kevin Spacey's John Williamson, and Allison Janney will read Alan Arkin's George Aaronow, which is a particularly inspired choice. (Alec Baldwin's character has not been cast yet.) The February 21 event is sold out, but there's always a wait-list line. (It's supposed to be in the 80s today in L.A., so just go wait outside now.)...

There is a reason Al Pacino is one of the most celebrated actors in America and why David Mamet is one of the most celebrated playwrights.
Put the two together, in the revival of "Glengarry Glen Ross" and it's great theater.
Bobby Cannavale (TV's "Nurse Jackie") plays the role Pacino did 20 years ago, and he's wonderful or as the actors in this play would say, "f***ing wonderful."
The play revolves around four salesmen in a real estate office, and they basically speak like longshoremen who were just injured.
Pacino is Shelly, the role Jack Lemon played in the 1992 film. He's been on a losing streak, and is about to get fired.
He and the other four -- hotshot Ricky Roma (Cannavale), enraged Dave (John C. McGinley, Broadway's "Requiem for a Heavyweight" TV's "Scrubs"), beaten down George (Richard Schiff unchanged since his "The West Wing") days, and office manager, John,...

"Glengarry Glen Ross," David Mamet's landmark depiction of avarice and capitalism's dehumanizing impact, may have lost some of the sizzle it enjoyed when it premiered on Broadway nearly three decades ago. Critics just poured cold water on a hot-ticket revival led by Al Pacino, with many complaining that the Oscar and Tony winner is miscast as down-on-his-heels salesman Shelly Levene. Pacino played hot-shot real estate agent Ricky Roma in the 1992 film version of the play, earning an Academy Award nomination for his troubles. That part goes to Bobby Cannavale in...

The ticket-scalpers prowling outside the theater call it “the Al Pacino show,” and they’re not snowing you: Pacino is definitely doing Pacino in Daniel Sullivan’s new production of Glengarry Glen Ross. Those who arrive for a hit of the old hoo-wah won’t be disappointed, though they’ll find the gale-force, blow-dried bombast of yesteryear mostly stilled, retired in favor of more temperate (if still familiar) riffs and melismas in the mid-Pacinoid range. The singsong taunt, the rope-a-dope shambling delivery, the lip-licking, mid-sentence power-pause — all make fine sauces to the language banquet David Mamet laid before us 30 years ago, when his savory, profane near-comedy about small-time real-estate salesmen in extremis debuted on Broadway. (Is it a great play? Yes, I think it is: a throat-cutting grappa aperitif to Death of a Salesman, really.) In the considerably more grave-faced film version, Pacino played alpha-shark Ricky Roma, swimming circles around...

David Mamet hasn't got much to shout about on Broadway at the moment, unlike the much-praised star of one of his two flops
The world is divided into two types of people: diehard Al Pacino fans, and the rest of us. Both were in attendance at a half-empty matinee performance this week of the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross, David Mamet's Pulitzer prize-winning 1982 depiction of a crooked Chicago real-estate office.
The faithful dutifully applauded as the curtain rose on the faded figure of the 70s superstar. As he began to speak, they leaned forward enthusiastically.
The rest of us leaned forward too. But that was only to try to grasp what Pacino was saying. At best he mumbled and muttered his opening lines, at worst the lines didn't even leave his mouth but seemed to give up the fight somewhere between his Adam's apple and his lips, before...

When moving something from the stage it can be risky. The stage gives a more focused view with small sets that can bring the intimacy to the piece that makes it successful, when moving it to the screen, the idea of the intimacy can get lost and the sets can become massive. The 1992 film of Glengarry Glen Ross kept its smaller sets with the small telephone boxes these salesmen use to simulate their jet-setting ways.

With top price seats at $350, the Schoenfeld Theatre run could do even better business than the 1992 film
Forget carving it up – the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross is raking it in real nice. With Al Pacino leading the cast, the production took more than $700,000 (£439,500) during its first four previews alone.
With premium tickets for the run selling at $350, box office takings were more than 119% of the Schoenfeld Theatre's maximum in line with the theatres standard prices. The average ticket price paid was $164 – the second highest rate on Broadway, behind hit musical The Book of Mormon.
A comparable star vehicle at the same theatre, the 2009 run of A Steady Rain starring Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman, averaged only $150,000 per performance over its 13-week run. Glengarry took an average of $176,000 last week. Its last Broadway revival in 2005 took around $52,000 a show.

Take an inside line from a pro marketer: All marketing is a scam.
That isn’t to say there’s no truth in advertising. Objective facts have their place. But to some extent, you’ve got to lay on the hype to sell a product.
In social networking, hype could be in the form of swagger like Ricky Roma from Glengarry Glen Ross. In retail, underlining the “new,” the “hot,” the “hip” in your product. In fiction, it’s lifting those starred reviews up to every media outlet you can, so that all may see them.
But there’s a line most folks have the spine not to cross – the spine, or the good horse sense.
In the case of bestselling crime fiction author, R.J. Ellory, the line was crossed when he created false online identities to trumpet his work and trash his “rivals.”
Don’t even ask me...

I have made this list as comprehensive as I could given what information is available but, as is often the case, there is much more data available right now about the fall season (September through the winter holidays) than the spring season (Christmas through the Tony Awards in June) on Broadway. I will update this post with more details as information becomes available.

Let’s face it: There are a whole lot of new stage productions opening in New York City this fall. Some shows boast legendary veterans like Al Pacino (left) and Sigourney Weaver. Others promise young stars like Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal. For still others, the title alone (a 50th anniversary revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, anyone?) may be the biggest draw. Here are the 10 that have us most eager to line up for tickets.

When we last heard of the Broadway revival of the Pulitzer prize winning “Glengarry Glen Ross,” it was reported that Al Pacino would be joining the cast as the sadsack and desperate Shelley “The Machine” Levene, played by Jack Lemmon in James Foley’s 1992 film adaptation, instead of the role that nabbed him an Oscar and Golden Globe nod. And now, The New York Times is reporting that the role of the voluble Ricky Roma will go to the underrated Bobby Cannavale.
Cannavale, who fans will recognize from the Thomas McCarthy films “The Station Agent” and “Win Win,” is no stranger to the stage as he has a pair of Tony nominations, including one for his performance in the recent run of “The Motherfucker With The Hat,” which also starred Chris Rock in his broadway debut.

New York -- Al Pacino is returning to the ugly world of real estate – he's revisiting "Glengarry Glen Ross" on Broadway this fall.
Producers said Thursday that the Oscar winner will play the role of Shelly Levene in a revival the marks the 30th anniversary of David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning play about the backbiting world of salesmen.
Pacino, who played the role of Ricky Roma in a 1992 film version of the same play, was last on Broadway as Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice," earning a Tony nomination.
Previews of "Glengarry Glen Ross" will start on Oct. 16 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and an opening night has been set for Nov. 11. This is the second revival of the play on Broadway and it will be directed by Daniel Sullivan, who directed Pacino in "The Merchant of Venice."

Al Pacino earned an Oscar nomination playing the cutthroat salesman Ricky Roma in the film version of "Glengarry Glen Ross." Plans are in the works for Pacino to take the play by David Mamet to Broadway, only this time instead of playing the shark-like Roma, he will take the part of Shelly Levene, according to a report in The New York Times. A spokesman for Pacino's agency, ICM, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Levene, played by Jack Lemmon in the 1992 film, is the diametric opposite of the brimming-with-confidence...

Actor is reportedly on board to play the struggling salesman Shelley Levene in David Mamet's Pulitzer prize-winning play
With Broadway productions, as with real estate sales, it's all about your leads, and, in theatre terms at least, they don't come much bigger than Al Pacino, who is reportedly set to star in David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross for the second time in his career.
According to the New York Times, the actor is on board to play the struggling salesman Shelley Levene in Mamet's 1982 play, which was first seen at the National Theatre before winning a Pulitzer prize the following year. Levene, a former company star, has fallen on hard times and struggles to make a sale, a fact he blames on the poor tip-offs he's being provided.
In James Foley's 1992 film, Pacino played the company's hot-streak salesman Ricky Roma alongside Jack Lemon as Levene and support...

David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Glengarry Glen Ross will have at least one major name attached to it when the play returns to Broadway next season. According to The New York Times, Al Pacino is set to star in the revival of Mamet’s real estate shark tank saga, which last bowed on Broadway in 2005 and won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.

Of David Mamet's many accomplishments for the stage, the Pulitizer prize winning "Glengarry Glen Ross" may still be his finest moment. And at least for cinema fans, it's the most memorable. With a script from Mamet, James Foley directed the searing 1992 movie that brought together the unforgettable cast of Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin and Jonathan Pryce to immortalize the work into one of the most quoted movies in recent memory, and also one that is said to be used by lots of actors for audition purposes. Certainly, there are some choice monologues to choose from. But if you're ever wanted to see it performed on stage, you'll get another shot.
The New York Times reports that "Glengarry Glen Ross" is poised for a Broadway revival for the 2012-2013 season, with Al Pacino set to return, but not as the voluble Ricky Roma.
